Exactly! I feel it’s the same in most Desi households. Especially in Hindi/Urdu speaking households, there’s a pronounced difference. When I was young I remember my mom telling me that kids in North India are taught respect by their own parents addressing them as “Aap”. It was a mind-blown moment for me 😁 But usually , in many families I’ve also noticed kids using the more formal way to refer to Dads and the casual way for Moms. It is not in any way disrespectful to moms, but defines a sort of closeness that one shares only with their mom.

So my parents were surprised when one fine day I decided to use the formal way to address my mom. I was maybe in grade 3 or 4 then 😄 it stuck with me all this time.

Yea everyone has their own preference when using aap/tum. I mostly use aap to both parents. But my brothers abs I speak to each other in English so I never really had to use tum unless I talked about them to my parents. But my parents also go back forth using both.
