Adi has accepted that Imlie is the be all & end all of his being. He cannot live without her at all. So he tries all things such as daant, blame game, gussa, pyaar to change her mind & come back to Delhi with him. But Imlie refuses to budge from her point as she rightly should. If he can't take her with him as his wife now, then what is the point of it? She can't go back to stay as a maid at his home after such drastic change in their relationship. So she reminds him of his responsibility towards Malini & his family, so that he can leave. The separation is equally painful to her but she cannot compromise on her stance now.
Adi's feeling towards Malini are not being straight up clarified by the cvs to maintain the drama factor. But I think Adi's total disregard for Malini whenever Imlie brings her up in their conversation is a key point to gauge his feelings.
We were expecting that Adi will now start to realise his incompatibility with Malini as a partner after realising his feelings for Imlie. But now I think that Adi has already registered this fact before he had even consciously started realising his feelings for Imlie. Just like he was subconsciously registering all the qualities in Imlie, he was also registering how unaffected he is on a personal level with Malini.
If we see all of their interactions post marriage, he is really closed off with Malini on an emotional level. Yes he romances her & coddles her but most of the times it is on her demand. He never does any caring gesture as a partner on his own. There is no honesty from both the sides except for making big declarations regarding each other's worth. All of it is fake. There is no genuine effort by both of them on resolving their conflicts. Just guilt tripping gets an apology & love declarations from Adi.
On a binge watch it is even more clear that Adi's concern & protectiveness for Malini is very low. His family & Imlie show more concern for Malini. No one can forget the bridge collapse incident- not just because it showed how fiercely protective he is of Imlie but also because how freaking unbothered he was about rescuing Malini. Channelling your worry into work during crisis is one thing but not making any frantic effort to search for Malini was very strange. The only conclusion that can be drawn from this is that Adi has zero faraks to give for Malini.
Frankly speaking he has only been fulfilling his obligation to Malini as a husband by doing the bare minimum. Yes, he indulges her tantrums & coddles her but none of it is sincere & all of it is because of the guilt of marrying her without revealing the truth of his marriage with Imlie. He rushed into marriage with Malini due to his anger & emotional trauma of forced marriage where he was deprived of his right to choice. So he stubbornly went ahead with the marriage even though he was aware that he is doing something wrong.
Once he started living with Malini post marriage, he gradually realised how different they are in their basic values & perspective of life. Malini got agitated even if he showed a difference of opinion in a minor matter. He realised how emotionally fragile she is & cannot handle him on one to one basis. So every time any arguments happened he was quick to brush it under the rug as he didn't even have any hope that she would understand his pov. Jab saamnewala baat ko samajhna hi nahi chahata toh baat aage badhana kyu. That was the mantra he started living by.
Adi continued to live his married life with Malini as she was his choice. He was just nibhaoing the rishta doing the bare minimum to keep her & his family happy. Subconsciously he was getting more emotionally involved with Imlie. But Imlie was staying with him, so he was happy to suppress any feelings for her & living his life. He maintained the status quo. As soon as Imlie left, his whole being became restless. There was no solace in anything- work, family or Malini. He came to PD to find the answer for this & eventually came to the conclusion that he has fallen in love with Imlie. This factor has now totally changed all the priorities in his life.
Imlie is the number one priority for him. He basically does not have any strong emotional bond with his family & Malini is lower than even them in his priority list. Also he is a selfish person. So Imlie & him are the priority for him. Since the hut confession he is not even able to utter Malini's name. Imlie is the one who brings her up. I think as soon as he realised his feelings for Imlie, he has realised he can no longer stay in a relationship with Malini. He has not yet worded this to himself or Imlie yet because honestly he is scared of the repercussions of this decision.
Adi realises that he is going to face a lot of opposition once he reveals that he wants to divorce Malini. From Malini, his own family , the Chaturvedi's & even Imlie. Opposition from Imlie is the one which I think he actually fears. Because as of now he is trying to respect her decisions & if she rejects this out of hand, then, he will not even be able to begin this process. In the precap it seems that Imlie will be extracting some kind of promise from him to sambhalo his rishta with Malini & fulfill his commitment to her. He will try to do that but I don't think he will be able to do that even on superficial level now.
Adi's need for Imlie & knowing that Imlie too deserves to have all of his love & her rightful place is going to play a big factor. He is eventually going to break this promise as we have already seen him breaking any promise that keeps him from Imlie. So we should be ready to see some more pagal harkatein from him to get back Imlie.
