I feel like it's also partly denial that he could fall for someone like Anokhi that is making it impossible for him to even consider. With Shagun she matched a lot of the things he probably thought of in a partner, they were closer in age. Here, him and Anokhi started off on a very different note so I think he can't even believe he would like her. He might not have loved Shagun a lot but I can't imagine that for 2 years these two were completely chaste 😆
