Chapter 2
Recently, Shaurya’s nights had been restless. But unlike always, it wasn't his family that was driving him mad. No, it was the woman who had told him that she liked him a week ago. For a while now, she had slowly been making a place for herself his heart. And by the time he realized that, it was already too late to go back. He tried his hardest to put distance between them. After all, Anokhi Bhalla was a student. He couldn’t possibly have feelings for her. Yet Anokhi, true to form, did the very opposite of what he wanted from her. She kept appearing in front of him, sometimes because she had questions about assignments, sometimes as the delivery girl from the canteen, and other times as the leader of the student government.
Amid these chance encounters, Shaurya knew he was a gone man. The mere possibility that he might love her had disturbed him months before she told him that she liked him. So, when she abruptly proclaimed her feelings for him, it took all his self-restraint to keep from professing his own love for her. Instead, he doubled down on his goal to keep away from her. This time, she also gave him space. Shaurya was still awfully aware of her presence around college, but he wouldn’t dare show it. Because while her schoolgirl crush would fade in time, he feared the way his heart beat for her wouldn’t.
He didn’t need to open his eyes to know when she appeared outside his office door. Before she announced herself, he recognized her steps. He hoped that when she saw him pretending to sleep, she’d leave. Instead, she entered quietly and felt her gaze on him. He fought against a smile as she softly scolded him like she often did when she got worked up. You also only ever seem to scold me, he thought to himself. Without thinking he spoke, accidentally revealing that he wasn’t asleep. She looked at him with surprised while his expression remained stoic.
“What are you doing here?” He asked as though he hadn’t been caught pretending to sleep. Anokhi fumbled for words, not having a good excuse as to what she was doing in his cabin.
“You weren’t sleeping?” She retorted, answering his question with a question of her own. He shook his head and she cursed herself internally. She was done for. He already seemed to search for reasons to fault her and now here she was, serving him one on a silver platter.
“And the answer to my question?” He repeated as Anokhi recovered from her initial stupor and cleared her throat to answer his question.
“Books,” she shuffled over to the corner of his desk where she left her textbooks, grabbing them as her last-ditch effort to save herself from his inevitable anger. “I forgot my books, so I came to get them.” Shaurya raised a brow, standing up from his seat.
“I’m not asking what you were doing on campus,” he began, taking slow strides towards her. He should have just kept pretending to sleep until she left. Because he never seemed to have great control over him emotions around her.
“I’m asking what you’re doing in my cabin?” Anokhi could swear her heart stopped beating for a moment when he stood before her. It wasn’t the first time they had been in such close proximity. Whenever they argued in the past, their steps subconsciously extended towards each other. And each time it happened, she completely lost sense of her surroundings.
“I saw your light on and I wanted to see if you were still here,” she confessed. Rather than feel victorious, Shaurya’s eyes were drawn to the way her she bit down on her bottom lip nervously. Was she doing this on purpose? Did she come here just to drive him crazy? Now that he knew how she felt, it was proving that much harder for him to see her as just his student. He was doing everything in his power to ensure the line between them remain clear. And she was doing everything in her power to make it impossible for him not to cross it.
He quickly turned around, returning to his chair and gripping the leather tightly. Get a hold of yourself, Shaurya! He mentally rebuked himself for being so easily affected by her. Anokhi could swear she saw a moment of weakness in his eyes, but she couldn’t be sure. Was she imagining things again?
“You’ve confirmed, right?” He began, looking at her with cold expression, different from just a second ago. “Now out.” He snapped impatiently, pointing towards the door.
“But sir I,” her protest was cut short by his glare.
“Out, Ms. Bhalla.” She knew not to test his patience that night. He seemed more bothered by her presence than usual. This was not the time to push for reconciliation or address what she had confessed. Maybe he didn’t feel the same way. But she never asked him to reciprocate her feelings! She just said that she liked him. Nonetheless, Anokhi turned to leave, confident that she’d find a way to fix things between them after her exam tomorrow.
After she left, Shaurya ran his hand through his hair, frustrated by his own lack of strength when it came to Anokhi. Just one more day. After tomorrow, he wouldn’t see her for a few months and by the time the next semester started, she would have forgotten all about her foolish little crush. He began to organize his things to leave for the night, only then looking at his watch. It was already nearing midnight and he immediately wondered how she planning to get home at this hour.
“Why is he always in such a bad mood? What crime did I do for him to be so rude? I just went to check and see if he was still there, right? He was the one pretending to sleep!” She complained aloud on her way to the college gate, frustrated with her quick tempered professor.
“Anokhi!” She turned around and was surprised to find Shaurya calling her name.
