Chapter 13
"Tum kya bol rahi ho Kalyani?," Malhar asked confused.
Kalyani looked at him in surprise. Why was he behaving like he didn't know anything?
"Aapko nahi pata uss din aapne kya kiya tha? Aapko apni aur Sampada ki conversation yaad nahi hai? Oh! Sorry! Mai toh bhool hi gayi ki aapko toh purani cheeze jaldi bhoolane ki aadat hai, toh aap woh bhi bhool gaye hoge jaise aapne mujhe bhoola diya tha."
"Kalyani tum baat mat ghoomao. Jo bhi hai seedha seedha bolo."
Kalyani raised her eyebrow and gave a sarcastic smile.
"Theek hai mai hi bata deti hu. Uss din maine Sampada aur aapki baatein sunli thi. Aapko kya lagta hai, mai sab kuch sunne aur samajhne ke baad waha rehti taaki aap meri aur meri bachi ki zindagi kharaab kardete?"
Malhar was still confused. Which conversation was she talking about?
He didn't get time to question her as Pawar had opened the door and Kalyani had stormed out of it.
"Sir, aap yaha? Aur Kalyani Madam yaha kaise?," he asked.
"Yeh darwaza kisne band kiya tha. Ek baar dekh toh leta ki andar koyi hai ya nahi. Itni laparwahi?"
"Pata nahi Sir lekin aap fikar mat kariye. Mai use dhoond lunga."
Malhar left the room in a bad mood and Pawar wondered why he was so angry and most importantly what was Kalyani doing there. He knew that something had happend seven years ago but he had never questioned Malhar about it. And Kalyani suddenly being back again was confusing him but he decided to let go of the matter and let Malhar and Kalyani solve their disputes themselves.
The rest of the day was quite busy for Malhar. He didn't even get time to think about what Kalyani had said. He knew that something wasn't right with the whole matter so he had decided to investigate on it but that couldn't happen that day.
It was quite late when he had arrived home that night. He was getting out of his jeep when he saw the lights of the outhouse were on. He wondered who it could it be this late at night so he decided to see himself. He peeked through the window and saw Sampada with a man whose face he couldn't see because he was facing the other side. Malhar brought his ears closer to the window to hear their converstion. He knew it was wrong to eavesdrop somebody but he had find out who this man was.
"Tumse ek kam bhi dhang se nahi hota. Wapas aagayi hai woh! Agar Malhar ko sachh pata chal gaya toh hum dono buri tara fass jaayenge. Abb khade khade mera mu kya dekh rahe ho? Isse pehle ki Malhar wapas aaye, tum yaha se jaayo aur ha, kaise bhi karke uss ladki ko yaha se kahi door bhej do. Itni door ki woh kabhi lot kar aa hi na sake," he heard Sampada say.
After a few seconds the door opened and he instantly hid himself. After both the man and Sampada had left, he went inside the house.
He had freshened up and gotten into his bed but sleep was far away from him that night. Kalyani's words kept echoing in his ears. What conversation had she heard?
He also had spent a lot of time speculating about who that man could've been but he hadn't come to a conclusion. He didn't fall asleep till the early morning hours.
"Aai! Tumhara dhyaan kaha hai? Aur kitna pani dalogi glass me?"
Kalyani was brought back to her senses by Ayushi. She saw that the glass was overflowing so she quickly wiped of the water from the table.
"Kya hua Madam. Aap pareshaan lag rahi hai," Sanvi asked.
"Nahi, woh bas thodi thak gayi hu. Kaam bad gaya hai."
Sanvi knew this wasn't the truth. Afterall she had been living with her since more than five years but she didn't want to trouble her so she kept mum.
Kalyani dropped off Ayushi at school and headed to work but she wasn't able to concentrate there either. The reason was Malhar. He was there again to investigate further and everytime Kalyani saw him a sudden wave of anger overtook her. Why was he acting so innocent and clueless when he clearly knew everything? But what if he really doesn't know anything? What if the truth was something else?
Kalyani herself was getting confused and frustrated. She was more than happy when she was finally able to go home and think about everything in peace.
She was unlocking her car when she felt that somebody was behind her. She turned around to see who it was and the person dressed in all black quickly gripped both of her hands as tightly as he could. Before Kalyani could comprehend what was going on, that person pulled out a knife. She let out a loud scream but as it was quite late, nobody was nearby who could possibly help her.
She tried freeing her hands but in return the man slit her right forearm causing her to screech in pain. The person was about to stab her in her stomach but suddenly another hand held his arm tightly making it hard for him to move his his hand.
Kalyani opened her eyes, which she had shut earlier in fear, to see Malhar angrily glaring at the attacker before he punched him in his stomach. He took out his phone to call Pawar but the man took advantage of it and ran away from there before Malhar could get a hold of him. Malhar was about to run behind him but his eyes fell on Kalyani who had silently started crying.
He instantly moved towards her and pulled her in a tight hug. Gently stroking her hair he asked if she was alright. She didn't reply nor did Malhar force her to say anything. He kept patting her back with his one hand and stroked her hair with the other one.
Slowly Kalyani cries turned into sobs and she hugged him back clutching his shirt as tightly as she could as if she was afraid he would go away any moment. Malhar's heart ached to see Kalyani crying and being so vulnerable. Ever since he had seen her again she had always been strong and had controlled her emotions in front of him but this time she was letting them flow and he knew that the reason for it wasn't just the attack instead there was much more to it which was engulfing her from the inside.
After what felt like an eternity he carefully freed himself from her grip and led her to his jeep.
During the entire ride to Kalyani's home Malhar kept glancing towards Kalyani to make sure she was alright. All of a sudden, he remembered Sampada's words from last night. "Uss ladki ko yaha se kahi door bhej do. Itni door ki woh kabhi lot kar aa hi na sake."
This wasn't a mere coincidence. There was definitely some connection between that conversation and this attack. He felt disgusted to know that Sampada might be trying to take Kalyani's life. Before it could get any worse, he had to put an end to it.
They arrived at Kalyani's home in about half an hour. Malhar helped her get out of the jeep and carefully held her by her shoulders to accompany her till her room. He had taken the keys from her to open the door and led her towards her room.
"Kalyani tum jaake fresh hojaye," he told her and headed towards the door but Kalyani held his hand.
"Mat jaayiye, please...," she almost whispered.
Malhar cupped her face and said: "Mai kahi nahi jaa raha hu. Mai bas tumhare liye khaana lene jaa raha tha. Tum jaayo aur fresh hokar aayo tabtak mai tumhare liye kuch khaane kiliye leke aata hoon, theek hai?"
She nodded and went to the bathroom to freshen up a bit.
After a little while Malhar returned to the room with a plate of fruits. Kalyani was already in her night wear and was waiting for him. He sat beside her on the bed and started feeding her some sliced fruit. While he was doing so he saw her arm which had a cut.
"Kalyani, tumhe chot lagi hai? Tumne mujhe bataya kyu nahi? Abb mujhe jaldi se batayo ki yaha koyi first aid box ya aisa kuch hai ya nahi?"
Kalyani pointed towards a drawer on the other side of the room and Malhar didn't waste any time. He quickly took out the box from the drawer and bandaged her arm. Careful not to cause her much pain.
It was past midnight when Kalyani finally fell asleep. She held his hand tightly in her's not leaving him any other option but to stay there with her.
He brushed away the strands of hair which were falling on her face and placed a tender kiss on her forehead before he put his head on the bed and drifted away to dreamland.
And with that they both experienced their first peaceful sleep in years.
