Also, I beg to differ on soulmate part, it's still time for that. Ani looks at bon as his counterpart or his Alter Ego, who is an open minded person like him , who understands his POVs , who listens to his intellectual talks , who dreams likes him , who aspires to become more than what women of that era were capable of.

In this whole process they have bonded well and have adopted one another. Hence , they are attached with one another. Right now they don't share love it's affection & attachment (my POV). Yes,I know the way they're showing it seems no less than love but still my opinion is different.

I guess with time as they both will grow up and then it will be that way.

Ani was always attracted to the lady who wrote that letter because of her thinking, her courage to question and take action. Not in a romantic way but in a deeper level. Like you mentioned, she became his confidant. The whole bedwetting track was about both discovering how very much alike and yet different they both are from each other. That kind of bond is rare to find.

And, I would like to believe there is love between them. Not the man, women kind. But just love. They both play so many different roles in each other lives. So the love they hold for each other is that of a teacher-student, father/mother-daughter, friends, companions, partners(again not hubby and wife), and confidant.
