“Maa, please let her go. She said her dadu is sick. She is worried about him.” Neil tried to persuade Shakuntala next day also. “Neil, I think I already told you my decision. I don’t want any arguments about it now.”Shakuntala made it clear.

Neil sighed dejectedly and went to his room to pacify Mini. “Please Minnu, stop crying now or else you will be sick. I promise after the festival I will take you to the village.”

“9 days. I will have to wait for whole 9 days. If anything happened to my dadu in this time then I’ll never be able to forgive myself.” Mini sobbed. “I can understand but….” Neil began but Mini interrupted him. “No you don’t. You dont care about me. I thought we have become friends but….you disappointed me. Friends support each other but you left me alone when I needed you the most.” Mini complained. “Its not like that Minnu…I tried…but…” Neil tried to explain but Mini shook her head and put her hands on ears. “I don’t want to listen anything. Go away, leave me alone.”

Neil stood up feeling helpless. He hated to see tears in his Minnu’s eyes. But what can he do? He already made promise to maa about not asking anything more for Minnu and now he has to oblige that promise. He knew his maa was being unnecessarily strict and unreasonable with Mini but he couldn’t do anything this time.

He came out of the room thinking Mini might calm down after sometime. But little did he know that his wife was not among those who let go of their stubbornness so easily. Mini didn’t come out of the room whole day. She didn’t eat anything since morning and didn’t show up for dinner also. This made Neil worried.

At night he came with the plate of food for Minnu. “Get up Minnu. Please eat something.” He caressed her forehead lovingly and got worried as he realized that she was having fever. “Minnu, You are having fever. Please get up and stop crying.” Neil pleaded. “No, go away from here. I don’t want anything. I just want to meet my dadu biji.” Mini sobbed again. Neil saw her as fresh tears made her eyes wet. Her tear stained face, quivering lips and fever….he lost the battle. He knew he was breaking his promise to his maa but he couldn’t bear the sight of his Minnu suffering like this.

“Minnu, I will take you to the village. We will meet your dadu biji.” He said as he wiped her tears. “Really?” Mini asked with hopeful eyes. “Yes, but first you have to finish this dinner and have medicine, ok?” Neil instructed and Mini nodded her head in yes. She quickly finished her dinner and took medicines after that like an obedient girl. “Ok now, pack your bags. We are leaving.” Neil said and Mini was shocked. “What? We will leave now? Its night. We can leave tomorrow morning.” Mini suggested.

“Yes, but I wont be able to face maa, go against her wish openly.” Neil thought. “Minnu, we will leave right now. Hurry up.” Neil replied and Mini went to pack her bags while Neil sat down on study table to write a letter to Shakuntala.

“Malti, Rani, Sohan, Shyamu, Ramesh…..aree kaha mar gaye sabke sab?” Shakuntala called all the servants and at once all of them come and stood before her in line. “Has anyone seen Neil and Mini since morning? Where are they?” Shakuntala asked and all of them shook their head in no. Worried for her children she went to their room. The door was closed. She knocked it few times but getting no answer she pushed it and found the room empty. She was about to go out when she noticed the letter on the table. She opened and read it.

“Maa, I know you will be angry after knowing this but please try to understand, Minnu was crying since whole day and she was worried sick for her dadu. I couldn’t see her in that state so I am taking her to the village to meet her dadu and biji. I knew you will never allowed us so I didn’t ask you and left in the night with Minnu. Don’t worry about us. We will return in 3-4 days. And please forgive me for disobeying you. Take care, Neil.”

Shakuntala was fuming in anger as she crumpled the piece of paper in her hands. Neil left with that chorni in night. They left like some thieves. She had no hope from that chorni but her own son disobeyed her. He cheated her like this….for that chorni. That girl become so important to him that he insulted his maa. Suddenly all those things her friend Saroj had fed in Shakuntala’s mind against Mini and all that she said about Neil turning against her, started coming to her mind and she realized with horror that each and every word of Saroj has come true. Shakuntala closed her eyes in pain as she heard the sound of her pride crushing down to pieces.

“Neil and Mini reached her dadu and biji’s house in village in early morning. Mini was sleeping leaning on Neil’s shoulder on the front seat of car while Neil was driving. Neil caressed her hair and asked her to wake up. “Hum pahuch gaye!” Mini shouted in excitement as she realized they already reached. She rubbed her eyes to wipe off any traces of sleep and almost jumped out of the car when Neil applied brake. Mini took out the luggage from the car while Neil parked the car. While carrying the bags she almost tried to run when Neil caught her. “Calm down Minnu. Dadu Biji kahi bhaag nahi jayenge.” Neil laughed at her as he took bags from her. She held his hand and happily took him, almost dragged him, to her dadu biji’s house.

Dadu was reading newspaper while Biji was in the kitchen making tea for him. “Arre chai banne mein aur kitni der hai?” Dadu asked impatiently. “Bana to rahi hoon. Subah subah kyu chid chid kar rahe hain aap? Ek to aapki tabiyat theek nahi hai aur upar se gussa karte rehte hain.” Biji scolded him from the kitchen. “Chid chid nahi karu toh kya karu? Ek hi to poti hai meri…uski shadi mein bhi nahi ja saka is tabiyat ke kaaran. Kitne armaan the ki use dulhan bane dekho par…..” Dadu couldn’t complete his sentence as Mini pushed opened the door shouting, “Dadu…Biji…SURPRISE!”

“Mini puttar tu yaha…achanak?” Dadu stood up at once and Mini threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. “I was missing you so much dadu.” She sobbed. “Mini…tu …yaha…kaise?” Biji also came from the kitchen hearing her voice. “Biji….love you…missed you guys so much in my wedding.” Mini now took Biji in bone crushing hug. Neil saw her happiness and any feeling of guilt that he had for betraying his maa by coming here, left him immediately.This was worth it. Million dollar smile on his Minnu’s face. He can bear anything for it…also his maa’s wrath.

Dadu Biji saw Neil still standing at the door with their bags. Biji nudged dadu to welcome him in their house.“Neil….beta aap darwaze par kyu khade ho? Andar aao na.” Dadu went to welcome him and took bags from his hands. “Dadu…aap beta bhi keh rahe hain aur sath mein aap bhi? Sirf beta kafi hai.” Neil replied and dadu could feel that he is a nice person. He asked him to come inside when Biji stopped them. “Wait for few minutes. You both have come first time as a married couple. Mujhe aarti karne do pehle.” Biji said and brought a pooja thali from the kitchen. As biji saw them first time standing together as a couple she realized actually their pair was very good. Though she had seen Neil’s photo that Ashok had sent them but she found Neil more handsome in reality. “Handsome groom for their beautiful grand daughter.” Biji thought. She asked Mini to go and stand at the door with Neil. She did her aarti and welcomed them for the first time. Mini once again hugged both of them while Neil touched their feet asking for their blessings. Both of them put their hand on his head lovingly as they realized that not only nice person and handsome man but Neil was also sanskari. They were already impressed with him as they saw the quintessential sundar, susheel, sanskari ladka.

Mini chatted with dadu and biji for hours. It was only during afternoon Biji realized that today she had to collect dadu’s reports from pathology in nearby big city. “Oh no, how can I forget. Today I had to collect your reports. I should go immediately or else the lab will be closed.” Biji exclaimed and got up. “How would you go?” Neil asked. “By bus or I will take lift from any fellow villager.” Biji answered. “No need for that. I have brought car. I will take you. We will reach in no time.” Neil offered and Biji sighed in relief. She went with Neil to collect reports while Mini realized that by the time Biji will return it will be too late for lunch. Outside food was not allowed to dadu so Mini decided to cook lunch for all them to help Biji.

Mini was struggling with the vegetable and trying to understand what is wrong why its taking so much time to cook. She thought she learned cooking a little bit under Shakuntala’s guidance so she could pull this off but she realized that till now all she has done was making chapattis and cooking aloo jeera or aloo fry. “Hmm…I guess different vegatables take different time to cook.” Mini thought and sighed as she waited for some more time.

“Arre Mini, tum is sab mein kaha pad gayi. Tumhe kaha aata hai ye sab? Chalo hato. Main banati hoon.” Biji replied when she came back and found Mini in kitchen struggling with vegetable. “Biji, you must be tired. You take a break and rest. I will manage.” Mini pushed her out of the kitchen.

“Offo, ye ladki bhi na…kahi haath na jala baithe.” Biji got worried. “Don’t worry, I’ll check on her.” Neil assured and went inside the kitchen. “I think you should add some water in the utensil and covered it with lid to cook it fast.” Neil suggested. “Really? Will it work?” Mini asked not getting convinced. Neil in reply did all that asked her to boil the daal as he prepared for the tadka. Mini realized all the time he tried to help her in the kitchen back in Patiala. “Hey! You really know some stuff about cooking. How come? I mean you are a man. No one in the family might have pressurized you to learn it. It is expected from us girls.” she asked curiously. “Well…I am living in hostels since many years now. So I know some basics. It’s a survival tactics….dont have any choice there. Its not about boy- girl. All should know basic things to survive on their own in difficult situations.” Neil replied casually as he took some onions and tomatoes to cut for salad. His words left an impact on Mini’s mind. He was so right. Had she known cooking, she would have already prepared the whole lunch. She never gave it a thought that cooking, learning other household chores could come handy in such situation. She always ran away from it whenever someone tried to teach her because she thought that they wanted to bind her in the house with all these things. But now she got a new perspective.

All four of them were chatting in the night, sitting outside in the courtyard of the house. “I still cant believe our jhalli Mini made us so tasty lunch and dinner.” Dadu praised her. “He helped…a lot.” Mini replied looking at Neil and he returned the gesture. Both were lost in each others eyes for few seconds. Dadu biji also saw this and sent a silent prayer for their children to God. “I cant believe Neil is so down to earth and understanding. I mean I have heard a lot about his mother Shakuntala devi. She is big landlord of Patiala. Quite strict and somewhat snobbish lady. When Ashok told me about Neil, I was afraid that whether our Mini will be able to adjust in their house. Will Neil be mature enough to understand our jhalli. But after meeting him, I am relieved.” Dadu whispered so that only Biji could hear him. And she nodded in agreement.

Soon it was the time to sleep. Dadu biji had very decent house, having only one small bedroom, just enough for both of them and they decided to leave it for Neil and Mini and they themselves adjusted in the living room on extra mattress. “Sorry beta, hum jante hain ki tumhe itne chhote ghar mein rehne ki aadat nahi hai par is gaon mein tumhare liye aur achha intezaam hum log nahi kar paaye.” Biji said and folded her hands in front of Neil. “Arre, dadu biji, please don’t embarrass me. You have welcomed me and accepted me wholeheartedly…that’s enough for me.” Neil replied. “You are perfect. Handsome, understanding, mature, down to earth, caring….perfect man any girl could get. What is there to not like about you?” Biji said as he ruffled his hair affectionately. Neil just smiled while those words of biji kept playing in Mini’s mind repeatedly. “He was perfect indeed. “Then why he chose her…uncouth, uncultured, jungli, chorni…” Mini sighed as she remembered how Shakuntala describes her.

Lost in her thoughts, Mini came in the bedroom and Neil also followed her. “Why you decided to get married to me?” Mini asked out loud when she couldn’t take it anymore. “Because I love you Minnu. I have told you many times right?” Neil asked in confusion. “Yes, but…but you could have got any girl according to your status….someone your maa also liked..like someone from your friend circle like that …Jazz…or Preet…you went to see her for marriage proposal right then what happened?” Mini asked. “You happened. Jazz is just friend and ever since I have laid my eyes on you, no one managed to get my attention. You don’t know how beautiful you are Minnu. You have your own personality. I like everything about you…I am crazy about you.” Neil replied looking right into her eyes and for the first time Mini could feel her cheeks warm up. She was blushing. No one had ever said such thing to her in her life.

Mini started playing with end of her saree pallu as she didn’t know what else to do. She was avoiding eye contact with him. The intensity with which he looked at her had melted the ice on those emotions which every girl has hidden, reserved, for the man in her life and she was feeling them for the first time. In nervousness she bit her lower lip and she heard Neil exhaled.

“Stop it right now.” He almost whispered. “Hmm?” Mini looked up in confusion. “That…don’t do it or else I fear that I….” Neil said with difficulty as he eyed her lips. Mini at once understood what he was saying and released the lower lip from the grip of her teeth. Her heart started beating faster on listening to his love filled threat. She turned around and quietly laid down on bed.

Mini turned towards him after sometime and found that he was still standing at his place. “What happen? You should sleep now.” Mini suggested. “But where?” Neil asked as he looked around the whole room. There was no couch. The room was small to fit any extra mattress and on the top of it the bed was not like the king size bed they had in their room in Patiala. It was old styled bed…just little bit bigger from single bed…sufficient enough to just fit two people. So, they couldn’t make any pillow wall or anything like that.

Mini sat up straight on her bed realizing the seriousness of the problem. She thought for sometime but having no other option she asked him to come on bed. “Its ok, You can sleep here.” She patted the empty space beside her. Her mind was screaming at her to not do this specially after that little sweet threat he gave just moments ago but her heart was telling her that she can trust him. Neil gulped down and mentally prepared himself for the long torturous night. He would be only inches away from his Minnu, their bodies may touch each other…he started having wild images just by thinking about it. He took a deep breath and drank whole glass of water to calm himself down. “Breathe Neil…relax…you cant break her trust…remember your promise.” He chanted like some mantra and laid down as far from Mini as the small bed allowed him.

Neil was successful in maintaining safe distance till he was awake. Though it was a herculean task for him to not caress his Minnu’s face while she was asleep peacefully or put his hand around her waist protectively or kiss her on forehead wishing her good night but he managed somehow. But once asleep his body was not in his control anymore neither Mini’s mind was on alert so both came close unconsciously. Somewhere in the middle of night Mini woke up only to find herself lying on Neil’s chest. Her legs were over his and one hand on his waist while other tucked under her own face. She shrieked and got up immediately. Neil also woke up due to the disturbance.

“What happened Minnu?” Neil asked rubbing his eyes. “I…we…I was…we were lying very close…” Mini stammered as she shifted a little away from him. “Oh…I told you…there is no enough space.” Neil stated the obvious. He read the awkwardness in her eyes. “Don’t worry I will not lie down. I will just sit here taking support of headrest. You can sleep properly.” Neil gave an idea. Mini was feeling sleepy. She wanted to accept that suggestion but she knew Neil was even more tired than her as he had driven them all the way from Patiala then helped her in cooking also.

“Its ok….you can sleep too….its all very new to me…that’s why I freaked out. I think we should sleep again.” Mini said timidly as she made space for him and gestured him to lie down again. “Its ok Minnu, you don’t need to do this….” Neil asked her but she didn’t let him complete, “Its ok…I wont mind. You need rest too.” Mini said and turned to the other side before he could argue further. Neil smiled, he could see that she is making attempts though small but she is trying to accept him as her husband. He lied down again, careful this time, not to make her uncomfortable till sleep took over his senses again.

3 days passed in the village. Now dadu was alright. Neil asked their permission to go back. “Itni kya jaldi hai beta. Aur ye teen din bhi to tum dono ne hum budho ki sewa mein nikal diye. Kuch din aur ruk jao.” Biji suggested. “Biji, we cant stay more now. Maa wanted to celebrate navratri festival with Minnu. So we have to go.” Neil politely refused. “But, please stay for atleast 2 more days. Mere bhi kuch armaan hai. Itne dino baad Mini ghar aayi hai main bhi uski farmaishe puri karna chahti hoon..uske sath samay bitana chahti hoon.” Biji requested again. Neil wanted to say no but then he looked at Mini’s face. She had almost pouted awaiting his reply. Neil couldn’t stop his laughter and agreed for staying and seeing that Mini almost jumped in happiness. “Yayyee!” Mini exclaimed and put her hands on Neil’s neck almost hugging him from behind while Neil was surprised with her sudden act and dadu biji were embarrassed. Looking at their pink faces Mini realized what she did and she suddenly pulled back her hands. “I…I think…I left the gas on..I’ll just check it.” She excused herself and ran inside the kitchen. “I…think…she needs help.” Neil also couldn’t stay there for long and followed her inside.

Neil saw Mini in kitchen doing nothing just lost in thoughts and blushing and he couldn’t help but admire how cute she looked while blushing. These days with dadu biji in village were proved to be the greatest gift of God to them to improve their relationship…to bridge the gap between them…to shorten the journey from being friends to be husband and wife. Though Mini didn’t say anything specifically but Neil could feel the change in her. Now she doesnt eye any of his attempt to help her with suspicion. Now she started liking his company, she wanted him to be around her. She now discussed her problems, her stories with him every night before falling asleep. Now she doesn’t freak out when she find herself lying on him.

Neil smiled remembering her sleeping habits. She moved a lot in sleep and sometimes ended up falling down from the bed also. So one night with so much hesitation he had suggested to hold her close to save her from falling down. He regretted giving that suggestion seeing the look on her face. She was silent for few minutes. He expected her outburst but he was actually shocked when she quietly laid down and turned towards her side and put his arm around her waist. He could feel his heart doing disco dance inside his ribcage. But he controlled somehow fearing that Mini may come to know of it and will be scared.

“Mini, mujhe toh yakeen hi nahi hua jab Neil ne bataya ki tum gaana seekh rahi ho. Mujhe to shuru se pata tha tum bahut achha gaati ho lekin tumhare papa ne kabhi dhyan hi nahi diya meri baton par.” Biji said as she caressed Mini’s hair and put some oil to do massage. “I didn’t give much importance to it but Neil said I should learn it properly. I feel happy while singing.” Mini shared some detail. “Mini, sing that song for me…remember you used to sing in your childhood.” Biji asked and Mini nodded in yes. she started singing-

Mini had just finished the song and turned towards Biji to see did she really like it and she saw tears in her eyes. “Was it that bad?”Mini asked innocently. “oh koi samjhao is kamli ko…tu bhi na Mini…buddhu hai bilkul. Itna achha gaaya ki mere ansu ruke hi nahi. Bachpan mein jab tu gaati thi na toh mujhe rona aa jata tha. Ye soch kar ki tujhe ek din shadi karke apne sasural chale jana hai.” Biji explained as she massaged Mini’s hairs lovingly.

“But I used to say in childhood also that I will never get married and will fly high in the sky where no one will be able to catch me. And anyways this marriage thing is not for me. I am a free bird….just like it is said in the song, ‘chidiya da chamba, babul assa ud jana, saddi lambi udaari ve, assa mud nahi aana’…that’s why I loved this song.” Mini replied.

“Buddhu, tujhe abhi tak iska asli matlab samajhhi nahi aaya? It’s a bidaai song where girl says that one day she will leave her father’s house and its better to forget about her as probably she will be so busy and happy in her new world that she wont even get time to return back.”Biji explained.

“What? But how can one be so happy being tied in a relationship and expectations?” Mini put forward her doubt. “Kyunki panchhi chahe kitna bhi dur nikal jaye udte udte…har panchhi ko ek gharonde ki talash hoti hai…tujhe dheere dheere sab apne aap samajh aa jayega jab ghar, shadi aur jeevan sathi ki ahmiyat ka andaza hoga.” Biji smiled at her jhalli grand daughter.

“Achha hua ki tu Neil ke sath yaha aa gayi. Neil aur tujhe sath mein dekh kar yakeen ho gaya ki tujhe bahut achha jeevan sathi mila hai. Wo tujhse kitna pyar karta hai ye uski ankhon mein dikhta hai.” Biji said further and Mini couldn’t help but remember all the times when he had confessed his love for her. She had started liking him more than as a friend but all these new emotions were too much for her. Those butterflies in her stomach when he comes close, those strange feelings when her palms become sweaty and her legs turns to jelly. Though in all these days she has become habituated to sleep by his side but only she knows how much efforts she had to put to control her racing heart. She liked it and hated it at the same time. She could feel his hard body pressed up against her and the restlessness emanating from it till he falls asleep. She knew in her gut that he wanted to touch her like he tried to do on their 1st night after marriage but was holding himself back just to keep his promise. Sometimes she felt guilty to put him through this but she didn’t has courage to go forward.

Mini saw Neil was playing chess with dadu. It was dadu’s chance and he was not having any idea what to do and what not. He was just pondering over it since few minutes. When Neil’s phone rang and he checked the notification just then dadu changed the position of few pieces and claimed. “Checkmate….yesss! I won.” Mini saw this cheating and she was about to tell it to Neil when she noticed Neil was laughing. “Neil, you didn’t see he…”Mini began but Neil gestured her to stay quiet. He told her in gestures that he knows what dadu did. “But he did cheating.” Mini mouthed silently. “Its ok. Let him win if it makes him happy.” Neil also mouthed silently. Mini smiled at him. In these few days how he has become a part of her family. He respected her dadu and biji like they were his own grand parents. Yet another thing about him to like…admire.

“I like you.” Mini declared suddenly when they were lying beside each other at night. “Huh? What?” Neil asked in confusion. “I said I like you. This marriage with you…our relationship…its not that bad…I mean I can live with it…with you…we can…we can manage through it.” Mini wanted to say many things but could only utter these words somehow. She wondered whether she chose wrong words because when she repeated it mentally she felt she came out as snobbish, haughty girl but before she could think more she felt his lips on her forehead.

Neil couldn’t believe she said that she liked him. So finally she felt his love. She could see a future for their relationship. This was so overwhelming for him that before he could have gave it a second thought he had leaned down and kissed her forehead. He then proceeded towards her both eyes. His hand found its place on her waist and he gave a little squeeze. She gasped loudly and it brought him back to the earth from the heaven. “Oh f**k! He let slip his control again….sh*t.” He closed his eyes dreading her response and when he opened them again he found her smiling at him.

She wanted to go away from him or push him but she couldn’t gather courage for it this time as she for the first time accepted that she liked it. She liked that little feathery kiss on her forehead and on her eyes. She didn’t know whether she would have liked if he had gone further but when she felt his hand on her waist she, on an impulse let out gasp and he stopped in his tracks. But she wont ruin it for him showing her anger. So she smiled at him.

Neil’s heart did a victory dance seeing that breathtaking smile on her face. But he knew he had to take baby steps towards her or else it will ruin everything. So he sighed and contented himself with just that tiny winy little kisses. He opened his arms for her and she snuggled close to him, resting her head on his chest and hand on his waist.
