Part 3

Everyone was having breakfast in the morning when a carpenter came in the house. “Madam samaan kaha hai?” he asked from Mini who immediately got up from her seat and showed him the room. She came back quietly and sat to eat her breakfast again. “Mom, why you have called carpenter?” Aayat asked. “Some furniture broke down in our room so…” Mini answered averting her eyes. Just then the carpenter came back again in hall and said, “Madam, maine check kar liya hai….aapka bed to pura kaam se gaya chhota mota kaam nahi hai mujhe aur tools chahiye honge to main leke aata hoon.”

Mini closed her eyes in embarrassment as finally truth was out. She could hear the giggles of Aayat and twins. “Veer Balika and genie! We thought you guys would like to celebrate alone that’s why we left early last night lekin hume kya pata tha tum dono toh wrestling karne ke mood mein ho.” Arya said and laughed. Aayat also laughed with her. “Seems like they had a blast celebrating birthday last night.” Arman said and Ayush agreed giving him hi five while laughing hysterically.

“Shut up! Arya have some shame….you cant say such things and kids mind your language. Wo bed bahut purana tha….Neil stumbled and fell upon it that’s why it cracked.” Mini said in her defense. “Come on veer balika…I mean its quite an achievement to break a bed in this age…take it as a compliment…aur jaha tak shame ka sawaal hai to wo bachpan mein bhi maine nahi ki to ab karke kya fayda?” Arya replied and the kids again laughed with her.

Mini closed her eyes in frustration as she thought where is Neil and why she is facing this embarrassment alone when clearly its all his mistake. Just then Neil entered there after completing his jogging and joined the breakfast table. He looked all of them. “What happened? Somebody cracked a joke in the morning?” he asked while grabbing an apple. “No, we are laughing because you people cracked the bed in the night.” Arya replied and once again everyone in the room including Naeem bi and Biji also, who had already listened to all the story, burst out laughing.

Mini looked at him helplessly as everybody was teasing her alone. “So, what? Isme hasne ki kya baat hai…it happens…bed kaafi purana tha tut gaya….We’ll get a new one now.” Neil gave explanation. “Genie, actually you don’t take tension about it. We’ll go and buy a new bed…a stronger one for both of you this time.” Arya winked at him. “Chhoti madam, ab bas bhi karo agar veer balika ko gussa aa gaya na…toh bed toh kya mujhe apna room bhi naseeb nahi hoga kyunki wo mujhe bahar nikaal degi.” Neil whispered in Arya’s ear and she somehow tried to control her laughter.

“So, today Kabir is coming for dinner right?” Neil asked from Aayat changing the topic. “Yes dad, I had informed him yesterday only.” Aayat replied. “Is he coming with his parents?” Mini asked now. “No mom, today he will come alone. I thought you should get to know him first then we’ll meet his family.” Aayat explained. “Wow! So finally she told you about Kabir?” Arya asked excitedly. “What? You knew about him already and you didn’t bother to tell us?” Neil asked shocked from the revalation. “Oh genie, she is my fangirl…she doesn’t do anything without my approval…of course I knew and it was between us girls…why would I give away her secret like that?” Arya shrugged.

“Cant believe you have changed team?” Neil shook her head dejectedly. “Oh hello, there is no another team….we all are in one team.” Aayat supported Arya. “Tum toh jyada bolo hi mat…aane do tumahre Kabir ko….main bhi dekhu kaun namuna hai?” Neil chided Aayat. “Right dad! And don’t worry if Aaru is in Aayat’s team then we are in your team.” Ayush replied. “Hey! When did this happened?” Aayat gasped. “You are our sister. Its our duty to look after you. We have to test this namuna of yours whether he’ll be able to take care of you or not.” Arman answered. “That’s like my boys! Aane do use…achhe se khatirdari karenge uski.” Neil replied with evil grin and boys shouted, “Yayy!” in excitement.

A worried Aayat looked at Mini for some help. She knew how bratty her brothers were. Only dad could control them but now as dad is also supporting them God knows what will they do to her innocent Kabir. Mini laughed at her expressions. “Don’t worry! They are just teasing you.” Mini assured her. But Aayat prayed to God to save her love.

At night Mini was getting ready for family dinner. She wore elegant white floor length dress with minimal makeup. Neil came from behind and hugged her. “Once again happy birthday wifey.” Neil said as he kissed her on cheeks. “Thanks hubby…how do I look?” she asked as she checked herself out in the mirror. “Beautiful as always but….” Neil left the sentence in between. “But what?” she asked. “One thing is missing.” He said and before she could have asked what was it he took out a box from his dinner jacket and opened it in front of Mini. “Wow! Its so beautiful Neil.” Mini said as she caressed the pearls necklace in the box. Neil took it out and made her wear it. “Now its beautiful.” He said.

Mini turned around and hugged him. “Thank you very much.” “Hey! Its your birthday.Gift toh banta hai usme thanks kehne ka kya hai?” Neil asked while caressing her face. “Not for gift…for coming into my life…you have made it heavenly…you know now if I ever died and went to heaven then I’ll not find it as beautiful as my world.” Mini replied getting emotional. “Hey! Its your birthday. Don’t talk rubbish like this. And in any case I wont let you go alone anywhere. Saath jiye hain….mar bhi saath jayenge.” Neil replied. Mini covered his mouth immediately and scolded him. “Now who is talking rubbish?”

Neil smiled at her and touched her nose with his nose tip. “Ok, no talking now. Lets stay silent and make love.” Neil suggested. “Neil Oberoi, aaj hamari beti ka boyfriend humse milne aa raha hai aur tumhe abhi bhi apne romance ki padi hai…kuch to sharam akro.” Mini laughed at him. “Agar sharam ki hoti toh phir beti paida hi nahi hoti.” Neil also laughed with her.

“Neil, this necklace is beautiful but I want one more gift from you today.” Mini said putting her arms around his neck. “Yes, love. Anything for you.” Neil replied looking into his eyes. “Promise me first. You’ll agree to whatever I say.” Mini said and ran her finger on his face from forehead to his lips and stopped there. She caressed his lips with her thumbs. Neil caught her thumb in his teeth. “One sexy tease you are. No need to do all this….its your birthday and I wont say no to you for anything.” Neil assured her.

“Ok, then promise me that you’ll go easy on that poor boy Kabir.” Mini said extending her one hand in front of him. Neil gasped and removed her arms from his neck. “Smart move love but not going to work. I’ll grill that boy like some kebab.” He said as he clench his palm into fist. “Hey, you just said that you wont say no to me for anything.” Mini reminded him. Neil just folded his hands in front of his chest and turned around like a grumpy kid.

“Oh come on Neil, don’t be such a child. And you heard na chhutanki knew about him.If you consider Aayat as immature then trust chhutanki and her judgement.” Mini reasoned. Neil opened his mouth to protest but couldn’t as he thought Mini was right. Arya was smart enough to judge right and wrong kind of people and if she is ok with this Kabir then he might not turn out to be that bad. But how can he not grill him? Bad or not that boy is coming to take away his daughter…his little munchkin….how can he just be ok with it.

Finally, Kabir made an entry in haveli. Aayat went out of door excitedly to escort him inside. All the family members were standing in the main hall only. As every one checked out the boy who looked dapper in the elegant black formal suit, the boy smiled at them. “Hmm…dikhne mein to theek hai.” Arman whispered. “Yes, looks criteria checked.” Ayush replied as he mentally put check mark on his eligibility criteria list.

Neil liked his dressing sense and sighed in relief as when Aayat had said that he was a game developer he had formed an image in his mind of a boy who wore casual and funky clothes and has no sincerity at all. “Sirf achha dikhne se kya hota hai tameez bhi to honi chahiye….look at him abhi tak hum mein se kisi ko greet nahi kiya.” Neil whispered to boys and they nodded their head in agreement. Kabir then went pass all of them and moved towards the corner where Naeem bi and Biji were standing. He touched their feet first as they were eldest. “Dekha…sanskari hai ladka…tum yuhi shak kiye ja rahe ho.” Mini whispered to Neil.

Kabir then came to Mini. “Sorry aunty, aapke pair nahi chhu sakta…..you don’t look like Aayat’s mom..at the most you look like her elder sibling.” He joked but bent down to touch Mini’s feet but Mini stopped him. “Don’t bother, I don’t believe in such formalities.” She replied and hugged him instead.

“But I believe in formalities. You can touch my feet.” Neil said with fake smile. Kabir bent down a little to touch Neil’s feet. “Is there any problem in you back?” Neil asked. “No uncle.” Kabir replied in confusion as to why he was asking such question. “I would prefer sir over uncle…you have not become our relative yet.” Neil corrected him. “Yes sir.” Kabir gulped hard looking at unfriendly ways of Neil.

“So Kabir if there is no problem in your back then bent properly and touch my feet.”Neil again replied with fake smile. Mini glared at Neil but he didn’t pay attention to her. Kabir bent again this time he went as much down as he could and touched Neil’s feet. Neil on the pretext of giving blessings ruffled his hair almost pulling them. “Ouch!” Kabir cried. “Nice hair.” Neil complimented. Kabir hugged Arya who hugged him back excitedly and then he greeted twins who shook hands with him but showed him attitude.

Mini asked Arya and Aayat to take him inside, the twins also followed. Seeing that now nobody is there Mini nudged Neil, “What was that? What were you doing? Pulling his hair! Really?” Mini whispered angrily. “Didn’t you look at his hair…they were so shiny and stylish…I had to make sure its not a wig…I don’t want a bald son in law.” Neil replied and went inside while Mini stood there unable to believe he really said that. “This man has gone nuts.” She thought and went inside to stop him from doing any stupidity further. “This night and this whole interview is gonna be long…bechara Kabir.” She thought again.
