Chapter 17: Sweetest Days
I walked down for breakfast.
"Did you speak to Vikrant? He was with you too yesterday, wasn't he?" Dad asked.
"Yes." I replied.
"And how is he?" Dad asked.
"I didn't ask him."
"You didn't ask how your fiance is?" Daisy asked.
"He's not fiance and we're not together anymore." I replied.
"What? Why?" Dad asked.
"Dad, he didn't even care enough to stick when we were attacked, what are the odds that he'll stick when things get a little difficult." I answered not looking at him and eating toast and drinking coffee.
"Jodha baba, should I bring another toast?" Shanti asked me.
"No, its fine. Thank you." I told her.
"Eat something, bete. You can't go hungry like this." Dadi told me.
"No, dadi. It is fine. I have a little work to finish. I have to get to the site today, then check with the pictures and editor. I'll catch brunch with Sheikh." I told her.
"Jodha, the reaction Vikrant gave is quite natural. He just got scared. A boy born and brought up in wealth will naturally run away when he finds chance under an attack. This is not a reason to break up." Dad said. How amazing!! I put down my coffee and look at him.
"You're telling me that I should technically be with someone who can't stand and face problems?" I asked him. He rolled his eyes and groaned.
"Jodha, he is a spoilt child. Not that he needs to have face them."
"Dad, to live together, two people need to have something similar about their in their personality. If he can't stick around when there are problems, he's probably not even that serious." I answered and got up.
'I'll see you, dadu. Bye, dadi." I greeted them and left.
I walked out and saw the shiny black Audi standing by the main gate. A smile came over my face. I saw him. Leaning against his car, he was on the phone texting someone. It instantly reminded me of that dream of him. He was just as handsome, even in black jeans and a t shirt. I noticed that he had a certain liking for plain t-shirts. He had liking for jackets with a little designing but his shirts were always plain. His boots and locket over his neck. How is it that a man could make look accessories look less boho and more chick?
I walked up to him. He looked at me from top to bottom and gave a grin.
"That is a good look." He admired. I smiled.
"Slept well?" I asked him as we sat in the car. He laughed at me.
"I was until a certain someone woke me up and spoke for three hours. Hardly had time to sleep after that. Had to get back to my project, then have pre-workout breakfast, then go to the gym, do a little swimming, took a shower, had breakfast, worked a little and then here." He told me. I gave him a look in disbelief.
"This is crazy. I am getting body aches by just listening to it. Did you go to military school or what?" I asked him. He chuckled.
"Not military school but I had this all set for me since I was child. When you have a slightly troubled childhood, you do end up doing something to keep your mind and body in control." He answered. Troubled childhood? "Don't ask me what happened." I didn't pursue further when I noted his tone. He had made it clear that he wasn't interested in having a conversation about it. He drove towards the site. He looked really handsome.
I tried not to think about the dream I had but just kept coming back to me. It was such an odd dream. Why did I have dreams about something like that? One, the way everything was. No sign of cities at all in my dreams. I've never lived in village side ever so to have a similar setting in a dream was odd. Two, the fact that I dreaming about him and I married. Three, the fact that I enjoyed kissing him in my dream. It was so odd because ever since I have been having such weird dreams, I've been thinking about him more and before.
"You're a little silent. Something up?" He asked.
"No. Nothing. I was thinking about the project." I answered. We finally reached the site. The work had already started. The architecture started showing us all the updates. I took to make sure that everything was going according to plan. I don't want changes in the original plan.
"Adrij, I hope all the safety procedures are being taken care of." I hoped.
"Definitely, Miss Singh. I've worked on 16 projects with you by now. I'm aware of the morals you work on. Rest assured, everything is going to your morals and your speed." He assured. I looked around and saw that Jalal was taking photographs of little children at the site. They were the children of labour workers. He smiled at them softly. I smiled at the sweetness of it.
He was definitely a prince with his blood but had a soft corner somewhere. Especially for children. The children gathered around to see their photos. They nodded in surprise and delight.
I returned to work.
"Sir, the crane has stopped working." One of the people came up. Adrij groaned.
"Rane, it is going to slow down the work. Our project has a due date." Adrij complained.
"Hold this. Let me check the crane engine." Jalal offered.
"You can fix them?" One of the girls asked.
"Well, they don't call me Engine Doctor for no reason." He winked at her with a grin. She giggled. He was taken to the crane. He opened the cover. His eyes darted around the engine. His forehead scrunched as he focused on the engine. He cracked his fingers, took off his rings and bracelet. He gave it to the girl to hold it. She held on to it like it was national treasure. He began working. I noticed his muscles as he worked. He had built them well over the years. A single strand of hair fell from his gelled perfection. He would flip it away from time to time but it stayed stubbornly to increase his handsomeness. He looked beautiful. A few beads of sweat formed on his forehead. He wiped his hand to get off the hair and a bit of grease got smeared on his forehead. His eyes had already been calculating ever inch of the engine and it's parts. He had caught the problematic part and began taking care of it. It was an involuntary reaction but the way his hands worked over the machine, I could imagine them over me. Would it feel just as good as it felt in my dream? His hands playing with my hair as he kissed me.
"Switch it on." He told the man. They did so and the engine soared alive. He grinned in victory. He jumped off the crane. He washed his hands, removing the oiliness of the grease. He wiped with his handkerchief. The little girl gave him back his rings with a proud look that she managed to do her task. "Thank you, sweetheart." He thanked her.
"You're so intelligent." She said. He dramatically ran his hands through his hair and put it over his face like he was blush.
"Uff... Itni tareef bhi mat Karo. Mujhe sharam aa rahi hai." He dramatically said. The girl giggled at that.
A clearing of throat brought me out my thoughts about him. I looked to my side and saw Adrij.
"You're on the verge of making your attraction very obvious, Miss Singh. As such, I'm not against love but I'm not sure almost stripping him off his shirt in public with your eyes is going as a good repo to you." He teased. I blushed red.
"I'm definitely not doing anything of that manner, Adrij." I denied quickly. He laughed.
"Pyar chupaye nahi chupta hai..." He commented.
"Adrij, shut up. I assume you'd want to focus on the project." I told him.
"Of course, Miss Singh. I'll stay out of the way while you admire your boyfriend."
"He is not my boyfriend."
"Uff yeh pyaar. He'll soon be. I haven't known that if Jodha Singh wants something, she doesn't get it. If you could get me and Shayla working together, you can do anything."
