Chap 23- RED

Shravan was just behind Suman but in an angle, which gave him a slightly better view of the person holding the light but, in that split, second,he realized in shock that the man was here to kill. He did not even wait for a split second before he pulled the trigger. Suman was blinded by the light and on instinct had raised her palms to cover her eyes when Shravan heard rather than saw the click of the trigger and he jumped pushing Suman as the lethal sound of the bullet went off. Suman was shocked out of her wits but thankfully the years of practise prevailed and she without second thoughts fired straight to hit the well-built man. She was sure she hit the man as he crouched letting the torch from his hand fall and Suman fired two more shots and he crumbled in a heap, dead. Suman picked up the torch and looked for Shravan who was on the ground unmoving. Suman felt her hands tremble as she gradually crouched besides Shravan and slowly forced her hand to hold his wrist to check the pulse. She could not describe in words the relief that coursed through her when she felt the pulse under her fingers as she managed to turn Shravan who was probably unconscious with the impact but then she noticed the wounds. The thug had fired two shots one probably hit his shoulder and the other his hand and she saw the blood trickling down slowly from there. She froze looking at the situation, she was alone in the middle of nowhere in a dark forest with no help, no way to figure out how to get back, a lethally injured love of her life. She slumped against the tree feeling suddenly horribly cold unable to move, unable to think as reality stung her that they were here to die, and it will be probably days or months when they will be found. Tears stung her eyes as she looked at unconscious Shravan and felt life slipping away from them even before they could have a proper courtship together. The pain in her hand due to the insect stung did not bother her anymore as she felt herself falling into a deep abyss seeing their state. At this point the only thing she probably wanted is the thugs to find her and probably shoot her to make the pain a little lesser and the impending death a little quicker.

She did not know how long she sat there but it must have been an hour or so when she felt Shravan stir a little. She slightly angled the torch noticing that he had opened his eyes and then fished out the small bottle of water trying to make Shravan drink a little water. The web of sorrow and defeat that had engulfed Suman seemed to be now shrinking a little seeing Shravan open his eyes. Shravan was in severe pain as he waveringly said “Suman,I have been shot. I can’t move much but you can. Go save yourself and everything that we have collected”. Suman could not speak as her throat clogged trying to stop the tears, but she nodded her head in a “No”. Shravan could makeout in the little light her answer as he held her wrist firmly and said “Suman,this is not the time to be emotional but think practical. I am oozing blood and I can’t walk much and with the smell of blood soon wild animals will come looking for their prey. You cannot fight them all alone and you cannot escape from here with me on your shoulders so at least let one of us manage to live”.Suman now angry and irritated but still not trusting herself to not cry rebuffed in a loud whisper “That’s enough”. Soon she got up and left leaving Shravan a little astonished and hurt. Although he had asked her to be practical some corner of his heart wanted her to say no and stick to it but seconds later, he realized that he loved her and in no way, he would put her life in danger.Suman thought to herself as she moved away from Shravan with her bag plastered to her shoulders, using the machete to cut through the vines and short bushes.It was not far when she could distinctly hear flowing water and could make out a silhouette of a shelter in the dark and meagre torchlight. She cautiously made her way to the shelter although it was difficult as she had switched off the torch to ensure that the criminals did not locate them and walking in the swamp and wild forests just made it difficult. It looked to her that it must have been a forest department outpost which was left empty.

The pain was increasing with every passing second and Shravan was feeling weak now although he was not sure if it was because Suman had left or was it because he was so near to death. He so wanted to spend sometime with Suman and with his mother. He wanted one day to win a medal for his courage,but it all seemed like a distant dream. Probably he thought the Almighty, whom he had stopped believing since his father left, would take pity on him and make him fulfil all his wishes in his next birth.He looked up to see a small clearing above giving him a view of the night sky with one particular star twinkling brightly and he sent out a quick prayer. He could feel the blood dripping although not at a very high pace but not slow enough to keep him going for long.He closed his eyes as he prepared himself to embrace death. During his Rajasthan trip also he had felt death lurking in close quarters but he was not injured so he could think on his feet and not sit waiting death. He had never felt so much despair and regret in his life as he felt today. He heard some ruffling of branches and he was sure that some wild animal had already smelt human blood and reaching him. As he closed his eyes again at the impending doom he felt someone shaking him and he opened his eyes to see Suman panting for breath and then he noticed as Suman lit the mobile torch light to show the small cot like structure she was dragging. He looked at Suman as if she had given him a new lease of life, but Suman really did not have time as she knew every minute is precious. She shook him again to bring him out of his stupor and not listening to his blabber pulled him up and helped him limp on to themakeshift cot although Shravan was not sure if she would be able to drag through the thick forests or if the cot would stand the distance to wherever she was taking him. Suman had managed to drag him half the distance following the markings she had made while she had searched for the stream and the hut.Shravan was well built and tall while she was shorter, muscular but lesser in BMI so it was not easy for her to drag Shravan and he reminding her that did not help. For the last time Suman warned Shravan to stop talking as he might alert the criminals if they were near. Panting, dragging, tripping Suman had finally managed to drag Shravan to the shelter. She managed to make him sit in onecorner as she arranged the haystack to make a bed as she did not trust the cot to be strong enough to hold Shravan for a long time. She sighed thinking that she did not know how long they will need to be here and only hoped Sash would betaking some action if he had received her SOS.

Once she had settled Shravan she started attending to his wounds in the dim light of the torch. It was something to carry someone wounded to the hospital which she had done numerous times and it was completely different to attend to someone who is wounded especially if the person is your life. It took Suman a lot of nerve to attend to his wounds and she took deep breaths to take in fresh air to make her brain function properly before she started cleaning the wounds and putting some antiseptic liquid and then wrapping whatever bandage she had in her bag. Shravan’s shirt and vest were soaked with his own blood and Suman had to remove them to ensure he had no infection and not feeling cold. Shravan now lay bare chested and in the light of the small candle that Suman had managed to light ,she noticed how broad and muscular he was, probably any other day and time she would not mind running her hand over his taut chest but now was not the time. Suman was glad about the backpack they carried which had most of the essentials. Suman collected some water from the flowing stream to tend to the cleaning that she will need to do if she can till help reaches. She started to plan how she should look for help once the day breaks.She noticed that Shravan was looking paler and fleeting in between bouts of unconsciousness.It was almost 3:45 am and Suman noticed that the blood flow had reduced but not stopped and especially the shoulder needed a full big piece of cloth to ensure that it was tied end to end. Suman searched through their bags but found nothing like a long stretch of cloth. Shravan was conscious now although is severe pain with bullet lodged inside his body. Looking at worried face of Suman he said “Don’t worry Suman, we have managed till here, we will manage to get out of this”.

Suman knew Shravan was trying to pacify her, but she was worried sick. The phone did not have signals, it was deep dark night and she had no way of getting help or finding a forest guard in this part. She could hear wild animals around in addition to Shravan’s bleeding and feeble pulse rate and she knew she was literally running out of all options. She walked outside and just closed her eyes and looked up at the sky through the forest clearing and prayed again to her Bhaiyya. She kept up for some time, but no miracle happened and then she let herself go, crying in bouts while closing her mouth with both her palms to ensure Shravan did not hear her muffled sobs. When her tears had subsided,she realized that she has been sitting outside for too long and Shravan was alone inside, and she quickly rushed inside to see him shivering a little. She looked down at herself and her shirt and quickly stripped herself to her undies and then used her shirt to tie up Shravan’s shoulders and covered him with a few of her clothes and his jacket and then pilled the remaining hay to keep himwarm. As she was doing the shoulder Shravan became a little conscious and looked at her state a little shocked. Suman felt a little shy looking at the way Shravan was looking at her and then she heard him say “Suman I am fine, you need not do all this for me”. Suman smiled a watery smile now and said “I am doing this for myself and the way you look at me makes me feel beautiful so just keep looking this way at me”. Suman knew she was trying to put some warmth into Shravan through her words, anything for him. Before she could cover him with remaining hay he stretched out his better hand and said “Suman, can I ask you something”. Suman just nodded and Shravan continued “Can I hold you close to me as I lie here, if you don’t mind”. Suman felt like someone was twisting a knife inside her. Shravan was aware that he might loose the battle with life and he wanted to make the most of it .Suman edged herself near him and lay down next to Shravan and hugged him tight taking care not to hurt his injury as Shravan ran his hand on the back of Suman’s smooth back. Suman thought Shravan probably had slipped back into his sleep but she heard him softly say “ I had planned so many things. I wanted to marry you, go honeymoon in Thailand, have babies with you, serve you coffee when I am retired and take care of our house”. Sumansmiled hearing his thoughts and lifted her head a little and said “We will do all of them a lot more. We will win this when we are together. Just don’t give up”. After few seconds of silence, he said “hmm. …you are so beautiful Suman.In another day and another place I would have made love to every inch of you and marked you as mine”. Suman then whispered “You have already made love to me Shravan and marked you as mine with your love, care and the way you have looked and made love with your eyes. Shravan laughed a little “I never thought you noticed that”. With that Suman inched further close to him hearing his heartbeats. After some time Suman noticed that Shravan was again not in his senses and she got up slowly to clean his wound again and checked his falling pulse rate. She had to wait for daybreak till she can somehow reach somewhere from where she could get the signal in her phone so she could look for help. She kept looking at the skies and tears now flowed unhindered making their way down her smooth cheeks right between the valley of her breasts as she waited holding Shravan for the sun to finally bring some hope and life.

Chap 24-->Time

Despite trying to keep her eyes open Suman’s eyes were fluttering close, the exhaustion both physical and mental were catching up with her. A loud cry of a jackal somewhere and a loud ruffling of leaves jolted Suman out of her slumber. She decided to edge a little away from Shravan and sit up lest they are attacked by wild animals if not humans. The best she could do now is fight if she can. She slowly moved away and sat up slowly. She could hear sometimes Shravan’s muffled sounds as the pain might be getting worser but he was not at least shivering but his breathing was getting a little laboured reminding Suman, she really did not have much time. The clock ticked 5:00 am and Suman was feeling a little cold by now as she really did not have anything on her body apart from her undies. She rubbed herself vigorously to keep herself warm when Shravan’s voice reached her. She tried to understand what he was trying to say as his speech was now getting slurred but from what she heard she understood that Shravan was asking if she was cold and to take some covers from him and keep herself warm. She felt tears again rolling off her cheeks as she felt how in pain Shravan still was attuned to her needs. As she sat by the entrance of the shelter her eyes again went to the skies to see it getting a little lighter by now. Suman could still see the bright shining star twinkling brightly beckoning her. Her thoughts went back to her Bhaiyya, Satya. She sat there talking to him in whispers “First time I fell deeply and irrevocably in love and this is where it had brought us. Bhaiyya don’t I deserve to be cared,loved. First it was you and then it is Shravan. If Shravan does not make it through,I will also not make it and you will be responsible”, she looked up as angry tears flowed along with her little sobs as she accusingly pointed a finger at the twinkling star. Suman continued “You know Bhaiyya Shravan just a day back said that he would not mind even if he dies because he wanted to come clean to me which he has already done. Looks like you have heard his request but chose to ignore that he also wanted us to get married, have a beautiful life together.Why do you not hear these demands too? Do you have selective hearing? You know what, I don’t care whether you love me or not. I will not leave him in life or death. She angrily looked up at the star now and huffed and turned inside.

The clock ticked 6 am and Suman’s eyes had closed of their own accord when a gunshot was fired somewhere far but it was enough to jolt Suman out of her sleep. Cursing herself the umpteenth time she looked towards Shravan quickly checked his pulse which was very faint now. Time was running out too quick and too fast and Suman could not wait any longer. She looked at the little patches of light that flitted across the marshy paths wherever there was a clearing and it was good enough for her to move. She decided to cover the shelter’s door with some thorny figs and broken stems to deter wild animals and light a small fire to keep wild animals away while she goes looking for help.She was in two minds whether she should leave Shravan and go but one look at Shravan’s dark and pale face was enough to trigger her to take some action.Minutes later she was pushing some branches, some twigs and some thorny stems to block the entrance to make it difficult for any wild animal to get through and she hoped and prayed that this will protect Shravan till she is back. She would have to make it quick which was a little difficult as her feet was a little swollen due to insect bites and now, she had pricks on her hands while covering the entrance for the shelter. She decided to focus on Shravan’s pain so she can thrust her movement faster and not bother about her minor injuries.

Suman kept looking back as she stepped out to get some help leaving Shravan alone. Every time she walked ten steps, she retraced two and looked back at the shelter to see if everything was fine. She felt frustrated now with the situation and herself. Finally, she took some deep breaths and surged ahead going around the bend from where she could not see the shelter anymore.She could now hear her heart thudding loudly against her ribs as she unwillingly pushed herself ahead. She might have walked a kilometre when she heard shuffling of branches and distinct footsteps of probably more than 3-4 people coming towards her. Sweat beads appeared on her forehead as she pulled out her gun ready for use. She positioned herself behind a large old tree waiting for the people to come in. She was the last hope for Shravan and she could not give up, she could feel her feet becoming cold just at the thought of the situation.As the footsteps neared and she crouched ready to shoot , and then she heard what she had been waiting for , Sash shouting her name. The search party had finally arrived, and Suman finally stepped away from the tree and tried to callout to Sash as her voice betrayed her. She opened her mouth but sound refused to come out as tears ran down her cheeks and she tried again when a feeble sound came and then she tried harder till she was able to shout loud and clear “ Sash , I am here,…here…”. Finally, Sash reached Suman and enveloped her in a hug saying “Thank God you are safe”. Suman gladly let herself fall on his shoulders, clutching his shoulders cried loud and hoarse. Few seconds later Suman realized that she was still waiting to inform about Shravan. She quickly lifted herself and looked at everybody and said “ Come fast, Shravan has been shot.He is fighting for his life.” She pointed towards the direction of the shelter as the police and NCB officials started moving towards the shelter and Sash took his satellite phone to ask the stretcher and ambulance to be ready to go as there is a critical patient on the way. Leaving Suman aside Sash also moved ahead to look at Shravan. The medical team arrived and as a pale Shravan was lifted on the stretcher Suman ran alongside it.

They all had reached the ambulance and Suman wanted to go with Shravan and it was with a lot of difficulty that Sash managed to pull her aside. Sash comforted Suman who was by now drenching Sash crisp crease free shirt with her tears. He assured Suman that there was medical staff in the ambulance,and they will do the needful and they would anyways follow the ambulance to ensure it reached safely. With much reluctance Suman finally gave in and joined Sash as he drove just behind the ambulance which was now blaring and blinking its way through the traffic to reach the hospital as soon as they could. A couple of hours later an exhausted Suman sat on the steel cold chairs of the hospital watching muted as the doctors and nurses moved with purpose in and out of the OT in scrubs. Shash held on to Suman as he perfectly understood the emotional state of Suman now. He held her by her shoulders and said “Shravan will be fine. I spoke to the doctors. He has lost a lot of blood but he has only one bullet , the other has scraped and torn a chunk of the flesh but is not lodged inside”. Suman looked towards him with an expression less face and Sash was not sure she heard him when she said “I love him and I cannot afford to loose him.It should have been me as the gun was aimed at me but Shravan jumped to save me” saying that she hugged Sash tight and sobbed unabashedly as Sash ran his hand over Suman’s head lovingly soothing her and trying to calm her down.

It was almost afternoon when the doctors informed that they had been able to dislodge the bullet from Shravan’s hand but the infection has spread a little more because of the time it has taken for him to reach the hospital.There has been a lot of blood loss, his pulse was extremely feeble, and his breathing was laboured when he was brought in so it will take time for his vitals to get back to normal. They have moved him to the Post-Operative Intensive Care Unit and he is yet to gain consciousness. As of now there looks to be no threat to his life but till his vitals improve nothing can be confirmed. Sash had managed to drag Suman home to freshen up. Although she obeyed but she was back in an hour in the same place after changing into afresh pair of clothes. The exhaustion for the gruelling day was catching upfast as she slumped on the chair and her head lolled back to sleep. It was only when the nurse shook her up a little that she jolted back trying to rub her eyes to brush off the sleep before she looked up at the nurse. Suman was a little disoriented as she had not rested enough, and it took a while for her to figure out where she was and then finally she realized the nurse curiously looking at her. She immediately straightened up and asked “Sister, what happened to Shravan, is he ok”. The nurse held her shoulders and with a small smile said “Don’t worry he is fine; he is still not fully conscious but will recover. I wanted you to come with me to the general physician.” Suman looked at her confused when she pointed to the swelling on Suman’s feet and said“Looks like some insect bite”. Suman now smiled back probably in a long time as she followed the nurse. After checking up with the doctor they proceeded to the infirmary where the nurse helped to clean the bite and the thorn pricks as she prepared for a little incision. The nurse looked at Suman and said “You love him very much. Don’t worry, your love is your prayer and God will always hear them”. There was something in the infectious smile of the short and stout aged lady which lifted Suman’s spirits and she smiled back. She settled back in her place with a cup of coffee feeling positive and energetic as Aneesh and Saheb walked in. They inquired in general about Shravan’s condition but althoughAneesh wanted to talk the fantastic discoveries he had made in the investigation he chose to remain quite given that it was not the right place.

It was late in the evening that the doctor came out walking towards Suman and said “Ma’am , your patient has regained consciousness . You can speak to him”. The doctor was leaving when he turned back and said, “You are Suman right”? Suman nodded and asked, “Why do you ask”? The doctor smiled and said, “You must be very special to him, the first name he said was yours after regaining consciousness”. Suman smiled now and realized that her cheeks had warmed up at the comment as she sprinted to the ward after wearing the protective wear. She walked in but her eyes stung as she looked at the numerous tubes that were stuck to Shravan. This was not the first time she was seeing someone like this yet seeing the fun loving, charismatic Shravan here downed her spirits. She carefully edged towards Shravan negotiating the machines which were continuously beeping. She lifted her fingers slowly but before she touched him, she looked sheepishly towards the nurse for a nod for her to go ahead. On getting a nod she softly called Shravan running her fingers slowly in his hair.Shravan slowly opened his eyes and it took him a while to focus his vision and realizing finally that his Suman was looking anxiously towards him, he smiled slowly and said “So, we finally made it”. Although the voice sounded faint, but Suman heard him, and she smiled back nodding a yes. She softly asked him “Do you need something? Are you feeling ok? “. Shravan smiled and said “Yes, I need a kiss and yes I am feeling ok but need a few more days before I can go all guns blazing again”. Suman now laughed a little as tears stung her eyes and she lifted her fingers to rub them off before Shravan noticed. She was happy to see Shravan back to his effervescent self. Suman noticed that he was closing his eyes as she tried to talk to him and on asking the nurse told her that the medicines that were being punched in the saline was making him feel drowsy. She finally wished Shravan good night before leaving and promising Shravan to be back as soon as possible the next day. Suman knew Shravan wanted her to stay but his drowsy state did not allow him to delve much. Suman finally pulled her covers as the clock struck 11 pm after a warm light meal to finally have some peaceful sleep after the tumultuous journey they had.
