Chap 21-->FootPrints

Next day Suvan were a little discreet given that they were aware that they were being trailed. Both were more attuned to the happenings around as they scoured locations individually. Their informer had pointed a few locations, but Shravan had a hunch that the same place where they had been the day before, a secluded side of the beach where he had spotted a storage house in between a clearing. The storage house was very strategically located surrounded by palm trees with the village on one side and seas on one side making a good hideout with good escape routes. Suman agreed with the reasons and they went back to snooping to the same place where they had been followed the other day but this time, they did not notice any activity neither they felt they were being watched. They just walked along the beach holding hands, watched sunset and sat in each other’s arms enjoying the view. They were about to return when Shravan spotted the trash can and things spilling out of it and he eyed it for some time before joining Suman. Shravan then explained to Suman that he had seen few packets of “Daavi Masala” in the trash can and he had seen loads of them in Kishwar Singh’s hideout in Rajasthan. Shravan thought for a moment that he had managed to upload the pictures to cloud when he was stuck in the sewerage before he lost his phone but he was not sure if they were successfully uploaded but Suman confirmed that the team had indeed received them. Shravan was sure that the Davi masala packets test results would be positive as he had smelt few of them and during the raid police had been able to find a handful of the same to be used as evidence.

Suvan had to move to a smaller place like a homestead where their movements would not be tracked so with the help of their informer, they located a quaint place which was very near to a daily market. This was an old house built during the colonial era with those typical red flooring and jumbo pillars with ornate boundary walls. An old couple stayed there, and they had a room on the terrace which they rented out to tourists looking for low cost accommodation. Suvan felt it was the perfect location as the location would allow them to monitor movements and the terrace would provide them the required camouflage while giving them a view of everything around. Shravan felt the only problem was that they had only one room, a very small one for a couple which they had assumed Suvan to be. Suman brushed it off and confidently walked into the new stay-in and looking at Shravan’s surprised look she had said “Don’tlook so surprised, this is not the first time. Sash and me had stayed in similar place for one of my first case”. Shravan’s obvious question was “Where did you both sleep?”. Suman laughed and said “You are on a case snooping,Shravan. You are keeping watch in turns so when do you have time when both of you need to sleep”. Shravan smiled and thought “How stupid of him to think like this after all Suman is no Devika who would use her gender to her advantage and avoid such situations”. Looking at Shravan lost in thoughts, Suman quipped“Thinking about me?”. Shravan nodded his head saying “Yes, kind of . Even if I do not want to, I end up comparing you and Devika “. Hearing that Suman made a face and appearing shocked said “Oh No!!..Meri Sauten , stop doing that Shravan. I met probably good people, my inspiration is Mrs Fatima Khan from my initial days in training who was our in-charge and she had two kids with one child who had special needs, but I never saw her slack at her job. Its just that you did not meet anyone like her who could have had a positive effect on you”. Shravan smiled and side hugged Suman and huskily said “Good that I did not meet whoever is this Fatima Khan and I met you else you would have more sauten”. Suman pushed him hard this time making Shravan roll on the floor with laughter.

Suvan now had to wait, for any kind of activity or they would need to sneak in to search the premises. They decided to wait for atleast 2 days so they could study the place before sneaking in Shravan had ensured that Suman was comfortable every moment by giving her personal space whenever he felt Suman was feeling uncomfortable. Suman was quite surprised with the way Shravan had this intuitiveness about her feelings and her state of mind. They hardly had time to delve deeper into their emotions as both had kept watch from their hideout on all kinds of movement taking turns at their watchtower on the terrace hiding behind the water tank. The first night passed off without any movements and then the second night too seemed to be passing off the same way. Shravan was about to pour one more cup of coffee when he heard the unmistakable sound of a vehicle approaching and sure enough, he saw a small truck making way towards the storage house. It was soon followed by another car and he had his ears and eyes fully alert. Shravan did not have the heart to wake up Suman looking at how peacefully she was sleeping but he knew duty was calling and he brushed away the soft tendrils on her face while calling her. Suman woke up with a start when she found Shravan so close to her,but Shravan explained her the situation. Within minutes both were walking down the dark deserted roads with cautious footsteps , their service revolver tucked in their belts and their small bags with essential equipment plastered to their backs. They had managed to reach the clearing and inched their way to the fencing and the first thing was they checked if it was electrified. On confirming that it was not Suvan cut the fencing and crawled on their elbows through the wires and inched their way close to the storehouse. There was one small window open and they could see that the lights were on. Shravan managed to get a large stone and stood over it to peak in and was able to update Suman that there were people inside who were unloading boxes which had some small containers in them. They were unable to figure out how many people were there, so they managed to click some pictures from the small opening they had access to. After some time , once they had unloaded the consignment they saw the people leave. Suvan waited with bated breadth till the only sounds left was of the crickets, owls and the occasional buzzing of the fireflies. Stealthily Shravan tried to go ahead when Suman quickly pulled him into a quick hug asking him to take care of himself. Shravan was a little shocked but happy with the way Suman let him know that she cares.He moved towards the door to see if he could manage to get in while Suman kept a watch.

It was a while since Shravan had been able to creep inside from a small opening along the storehouse wall. It was an old building and a few kicks on a cracked side wall had made a good size crater enough for Shravan to crawl in. Shravan had been so engrossed in inspecting the stuff inside and collecting necessary samples that he had not heard approaching footsteps.Suman was watchful and alert and her senses went on an overdrive when she heard a vehicle and she saw Emanuel Fernandez himself stepping out of the car and approaching the storehouse. Suman was not sure how she would warn Shravan because she had stepped away from the main building so she could keep an eye on the entrance. Even if she warned Shravan over Bluetooth the insides of the building did not have lot of furniture or any closets for him to hide. She could not panic as Shravan would be tensed then thinking she was in trouble.Suman looked around and saw it was almost daybreak and the village had woken up and there were quite a few people around going about their daily chores making the chance of Shravan taking advantage of the darkness even slimmer. Soon an idea struck her as she instructed Shravan to call the police immediately.Shravan was baffled as he could now hear the footsteps almost at the opening ofthe storehouse door and he was still to locate for a way to escape. The crater that he had made directly opens towards the entrance path but with daylight approaching it will not be possible to escape that route. His only hope was if Suman could hatch an idea when he heard her voice on the Bluetooth device. Soon enough Suman’s voice rang through the morning air “Hands up, this is a raid by the Narcotics Department and Mr. Fernandez you are under arrest”. To say that Mr. Frenandez and his team were baffled would be an understatement. They never expected a lady at such early hours would call out to and raid his premises. He had always kept the local police in good humour. From the sides he noticed that the people around the village had stopped by to notice what was going on and Fernandez knew he had to deal with this situation differently while in better times he would just have knocked this lady out and thrown her body in the sea. He walked towards Suman and ran his finger in a leering way along her cheekbones and said “Beautiful Lady, let’s talk , why do you need to point the gun when I can give you roses”. Suman spat “ I don’t need your roses, I am happy with your gun” as she saw Shravan taking advantage of the distraction and managing to escape.

Suman was getting jittery about what would happen next as she could see their target giving side glances at the crowd that had formed around watching the happenings. Soon enough they heard the loud and shrill sounds of the police vehicle go off alerting all that the police were approaching. Frenandez was a seasoned man so he quickly looked at the gathering crowd of his supporters at the village and shouted out “Look how this government agencies are harassing me, they cannot see me helping you all so they keep sending there cronies to harass you all and me”. Suman looked appalled at the way he was instigating the crowd against her. For the first time she felt her steps falter as the crowd zeroed in on her as she found Fernandez slyly smiling at her. She looked from the corner of her eyes Shravan standing at the corner looking here and there to find a way to let Suman escape before the crowd pounced on her. As he looked straight into the terrified eyes of Suman , he got ready to jump before the crowd and if required use his gun to rescue Suman but for Suman’s look indicating him to go. Shravan was now angry“How did she think he would leave her all alone and go, let her be angry with him but I will save her at any cost?”. Just as Shravan was about to step in the police came in running firing in the air to disperse the crowd. Fernandez pleaded with them to arrest Suman as she was disrupting the peaceful life of the village by creating unnecessary issues. Suman was caught on the wrong side as she had trespassed into his property without a search warrant and she was arrested by the police. Shravan dug his fingers into his palms as he watched Suman whisked away to the police station and he could not stop that. He felt responsible for whatever happened and angry on himself for being so careless and not planning out the escape route before entering the building. Suman could figure out that Shravan was angry, but she knew that was the best solution she had in mind. At least with the police arresting her she would be in the police station and safe but if they would have spotted Shravan inside the building it would have taken seconds for them to kill him and cover up because it would not have been in the open in front of the public. It was a few hours since Suman was lodged in a cell with the hope that Shravan might be trying his best to secure her release.

Suman had seen the collusion between the police and Fernandez, and she was sure that if she is made to stay longer, they would try all tricks to get information out of her and probably put her through third degree torture. The only saviour was she was from NCB and they would have to think twice before even touching her. They blamed her for trying to tarnish the image of a respected politician. Suman was aghast the way the police was siding with the drug lord but this is not the first time she was seeing the politician and system nexus. How could she forget that their primary target was a politician himself. She had been moved to the interrogation room and now the only thing she wanted was someone from NCB calling the police station seeking her release. Suman was aware that they had purposely snatched her id and thrownit away and called her fake in a bid to treat her like a normal citizen in custody. They would now try all sorts of methods available to extract what she knows. One of the police men was probably were trailing them as he mentioned to Fernandez “Sir, iska boyfriend kidhar hain”. Fernandez now leered at Suman saying “No worries we will find the beautiful lady’s bodyguard too”. The voice had made a chill run up Suman’s veins and she desperately wished that Shravan was not in vicinity for their good and at this moment trying to get to Sash orSubbu.

Chap 22- Darkness

Shravan had almost eaten up all his nails trying to reachSubbu and Sash for the last hour. Although he wanted to be in place of Suman or with Suman but he knew that he was the only hope for Suman and he thanked his stars for not being caught as then they would be in a very bad situation. Suman sat twiddling her thumbs in the interrogation room as the local police sat questioning her. She was aghast when Fernandez walked inside the room and along with him the police started questioning her. Fernandez was coaxing her with money initially and asking her to drop all this and shred all evidences they had got. Then he resorted to threatening her saying that his men were hunting for her beau and they would locate him soon and then she would be in a much worser situation as she would be on the loosing side of the bargain. If Fernandez was seasoned, then Suman was experienced too. She maintained her calm and chose to keep quite even though the lady constable did not spare her a few slaps. Suman was sure that Shravan would be trying to contact Sash and Subbu and it was a matter of time before they would try to secure her release and she would have to somehow hold till then. She had been in several occasions on the other side of the table, so she was aware of the nuisances of the activity. It was almost 3hrs since Suman was inside the interrogation room and although her situation was not bad or at least she had not been tortured but she was apprehensive about what the guys had up their sleeve.

After some time she was led out of the interrogation room and she could hear that the police was now talking to their senior who was asking them to release Suman for now and then contact NCB officially to file a report for trespassing someone’s property. The senior inspector was continuously trying to disagree saying that they were insulting a respected politician, and this was some sinister political plot and if they let Suman go they would not be able to get any information. After lot of bickering and discussions finally the inspector agreed to his senior and said he would let Suman go after providing an undertaking. The senior inspector warned Suman that they would not let go off the matter easily and he will take it to the higher authorities.Although they agreed to let her go they kept delaying the release in the name of paper work making Suman wait. Shravan on the other hand was anxious as Sash had informed him that Suman would be released shortly but it was afternoon and there was no news of Suman. He had to rely on his informer to get news of Suman as he knew Suman must have had her phone confiscated by the police and Sash had instructed him strictly not be in the vicinity of the police station till Suman gets back safe and sound. He had also instructed them to move out of the area immediately after Suman is back and not stay back to collect something. With whatever Sash had heard from Shravan and he had himself investigated he had this nagging feeling that this trail was getting extremely dangerous and he wanted his officers back safe and sound. The only silver lining for him seemed to be that they were on the right track and were probably ruffling the wrong feathers and that is the reason behind the harassment that Suman is currently going through although he saw no reason for the local police for holding up Suman for so long.

The sun was about to set as Shravan waited on the outskirts of the village in a distant corner inorder to avoid being detected. He had managed to sneak out everything they had carried,he had even packed Suman’s luggage and dumped everything in the car and set out quickly and reached the secluded spot. He watched the orange and red colours splash the crystal blue sky as the sun was now sliding down the hills and would disappear in a few seconds. He called their informer Raju now the 10th time and he heard a frustrated groan the other side as Raju almost barked into the phone “I am not a magician neither am I God , please wait I am trying to get things done and calling me repeatedly is delaying things”. Shravan was now feeling guilty for his won behaviour, he should have understood how things work sometimes but he was worried that despite the order to release Suman, she had not reached yet. Finally, after an hour he finally saw a bike approaching and he clearly could make out Suman riding pillion. The guy who gave Suman a ride was a different one from their informer. Suman looking at his expressions clarified that this had to look like a hitched ride so Raju had asked his friend to help. Once they checked that they were not being tailed or followed they bade goodbye to Raju’s friend and setoff on their journey back to Bangalore.

Suman noticed that Shravan was unusually quiet during their journey back. Suman tried some small talk but Shravan answered in monosyllables so after sometime Suman gave up and decided to give him some space. They were now in the last stretch of the road before they would enter the national highway which would lead to Bangalore. Suman was again lost in the view of beautiful tall trees lining up the entire roadway and she was curious about the deep forests that lay beyond those lush greenery. Her thoughts were disturbed when she heard Shravan calling out as Sash was on the call and wanted to speak to her.Sash sounded extremely relieved on hearing Suman’s voice and he had a short conversation with her. Sash also mentioned that Shravan was extremely worried about her and that he was blaming himself for not being attentive enough and taking care of the basic rules of trailing. Once the conversation was over Suman looked lovingly towards Shravan who was in his grumpy self and she decided it was time for some action to bring Shravan back to his chirpy self.Suman inched a little closer now to Shravan and softly said “You were worried about me”. Shravan felt goose bumps hearing Suman’s flirty tone, but he still tried to maintain a straight face which would become extremely difficult if Suman kept up her ministrations. Now Suman was running her finger across the length of his cheekbones along his light stubble and finally concluded saying “ok since you do not answer I assume you were not worried. Right?”. She then went even closer and lightly pecked Shravan on his cheek and then whispered in his ears “Are you angry with me Baby?”. Shravan now screeched to a halt and looked straight at Suman and said “What, exactly what are you trying to do?”. Suman laughed a little and said “Why? Do you like it or do not like it? But I like it at least it got a reaction from you”. Shravan grumpily replied, “Baby and all, what’s wrong with you”. Suman now a little irritated said “What’s wrong with me? What’s wrong with you? I am back after such a long time and you are in your grumpy self.Neither you talk to me nor listen to me as if I don’t exist. You wont even tell me why you are upset. I wanted to run…” she stopped before she gave away the fact that she wanted to run into Shravan’s arms the moment she saw him. She was worried about him and terribly missed him. It did not go unnoticed by Shravan that her voice wavered a little when she finished talking and he felt guilty of making Suman feel that way and immediately he went ahead and wrapped his arms around Suman pulling her into his warm embrace and she willingly went and felt happy delving in the warmth. Shravan slowly said “I was angry with you for jumping in front of those thugs to save me. I was worried that they might harm you and it was technically my fault not planning an escape route which caused all the trouble”. Suman tried to put Shravan out of his guilt trip so she said “You know it happens sometimes, its nobody’s fault .Would you have not done what I have done if Saheb would have interchanged places with you and you with me”.Shravan knew she was right and he nodded in an yes as he pulled Suman back into his arms with her head nestled at the crook of his neck as he took in her sweet citrus smell which defined her.

They had stood there for quite some time not aware of the time tickle by when on an instinct Suman pulled back and urged Shravan to get inside the car. Shravan did her bidding but once inside the car Suman said it was very foolish of them to waste any further time as Sash had clearly indicated them to leave this place as soon as they could. Shravan was driving the car now in full throttle to get the earliest to the NH highway which would make them feel a little more at peace. Suman had by now told him all the details of the conversation that she had heard in the police station. She was also disappointed that they had still not got to know anything about Saira although she was glad that Saheb was trying to help there.Fernandez was well connected,and he knew Suman and Shravan were tailing them. He would be trying everything to get ahead of them before any proof reaches the team although he might be aware the photographs might reach. Suman had overheard Fernandez talking to his boss complaining that some people were behind him and it was becoming difficult to carry on his trade. Whoever he was , it seemed the person he spoke to could carry out large political fallouts as she had heard Fernandez urge him to plan a revolt against this minister for instigating a probe. If Suman was right then he was talking to SR Reddy or his close confidant who would try and destabilize the government to ensure the focus was taken away from the case and their bargaining point would be to leave SR alone. Suvan agreed that they really did not have much time left to get their the main handlers to get to their target.Suvan spoke to Sash once again and Sash warned them against using Suman’s phone as it might be tapped and check carefully if they were being electronically tailed but Suvan did not think they were.

It was not long before Suman noticed something which made her instincts go on high alert. She mentioned to Shravan that she noticed a black SUV following them. The car was tailing them earlier when they had started but it had disappeared after a few kilometres, but it seems to be back and was right behind them. Shravan stepped on the accelerator in a bid to drive faster and maintain a distance till they reached the city limits but his efforts proved futile as after a few meters they figured out that they were being blocked from moving ahead by another white coloured SUV just ahead of them. They realized they were trapped. Shravan looked at Suman and quickly he took a bend near a curve and drove right into the deep forests. Suvan knew they could not go far with their car so after manoeuvring it for few meters they jumped out and started running deeper into the forests. It was not long when they heard footsteps behind them and they were quite a few in number as they tore through the bushes in sharp slashes of their machetes. Suvan had their blood run cold as they realized they had this time run into big trouble and did not know if they would escape alive.

Suman quickly grabbed Shravan’s phone and managed to send an SOS message to Sash as they ran deeper into the forests. Now they were surrounded by tall trees which covered the ground completely and even during daytime very little daylight probably came in. Now it was pitch dark and swampy with the ground being covered with leaves which made a mushy sound as Suvan walked on them. The footsteps were getting further but they were not very sure if they were discreet or they were losing their trail. They kept walking now at a slower pace forward as the vines cut through their skin , the snakes probably hissed past as they could hear sometimes feel the slither on their feet and all kinds o insects buzzing around their face and exposed skin. They decided to wait behind a large tree to see if they were indeed not being followed so they could walk back the way they came to a clearing where they could get a better view and then probably try to find a way back. They waited clutching to each other as they could hear only their breaths and the wildlife buzzing around for some time. They were about to turn back when an insect bit Suman badly and before she could stop herself she let out a scream. Shravan immediately jumpedand covered her mouth but it was too late as they could hear some footsteps again but this time they were much nearer. There was no way they could move ahead without giving out their location, so they decided to stay put ready with their guns. Soon everything had gone silent again and they decided to wait for some time again before coming out. They finally came out from behind the tree and walked a few steps and were shocked with what they saw ahead, one man was holding the torch light on them blinding their view and with a gun pointing at Sumanto be specific.
