I was about to say. I think he was disappointed that Bollywood movies were not discussed as much in his film course (?) in US. But that shouldn't belittle Bollywood. It won't belittle say Turkish cinema if we don't discuss or hardly discuss it in India. US is a very egotist country as is. When he grows up he'll understand the complexities at play. He's wise for his age, but still a kid. Just that that now billions know his thoughts, and have an opinion as well.

Well Bollywood being one of the oldest and biggest movie industries in the world, and yet no-one take us seriously, why is that? We make more movies than Hollywood, we sell more theater tickets, and yet only 3 Bollywood movies feature in the top 100 highest rated movies on IMDB, while we represent 1/6 of world population.

The amount of plagiarism that goes on, films copied from foreign industries, remakes of regional films, copied/remakes of songs, posters etc.... this obsession of sequels that have no connection to previous films, talentless nepotist products, Bollywood IS mediocre. Expecting better is not elitist.

I did say that we can work to improve on gaining respect among world cinema but we are making movies primarily for our own people. What is the point if tomorrow we have 20 films on the IMDB list or we win Oscars every year but a majority of our own audiences aren't enjoying or even watching those films? There needs to be a balance and all forms of cinema should co-exist and be respected.

Secondly, mediocrity or not is your opinion. There are millions of people that are enjoying certain films and actors of today. You can expect better, you can also turn to the content that you want to watch but it is elitist to generalize or expect that of everyone else.

I guess IMDB can be a criteria (tho that can be manipulated if need be) 😆

Income should be the main criteria and the money has gone up ten times in last 10 years with 100/200/300 Crore clubs

Irrfan was hugely appreciated for the types of films he did but you can't force the audience to watch movies that they don't want to. What does it even mean that his father was defeated at the box office by hunks? People watched what they felt like!

Imagine just having one kind of movies.....like just having romantic...or masala...or artsy movie...what would the people who didn't like those movies do...

Why would people living in Dharavi...like a movie like SDM or Gully boy....aren't they living that life themselves....the rich can romanticize these movies...call them exotic and all...but not a resident of Dharavi or someone living in a chawl....that is their daily life......why wouldn't they want to watch a larger than life...Salman's movie...which lets them escape from their daily drill even if its for 3 hours.......don't judge and look down on hard working people who toil in the hot sun and then save some money for a movie...

If I don't like a movie....it can win an Oscar but it will be trash for me...because I didn't get entertained..and vice versa....A good movie and bad movie is just a perspective ....its what one likes...

And our own audience don't rate them highly, otherwise you'd see a lot more on movies on that list. It's not an opinion, the fact that plagiarism is rampant in bollywood, this is an objective truth that you can't deny, there is very little creativity, how can you say we have great talent when all we do is copy others. The only reason why this garbage works is that the majority of the audience simply haven't been exposed to better cinema, once they see the level of movies being made outside of bollywood, they will want better films from bollywood, and it's started to happen, Salman Khan recent movies are tanking at the BO.
