Who calls anyone "Kaalu" from a place of love? Its been used derogatorily for South Indians too so its not a new thing or something which will change in Indians.

As much as I hate Swara, she's absolutely right on this. Kalu is very offensive to call any dark-skinned person.

Yes, sometimes we dont have any negative intentions, but still the word itself is derogatory.
