The author has succinctly brought alive through his vibrant narrative , the sights, smell and essence of the streets of Mumbai...Jerry Pintos "Mumbai meri jaan" is also good .... Both are a collection of short stories ....Easy n Fun read ...

@suraj camlin reminds me of their special compass box which had divider , etc math instruments which was mandatory in our school from 3rd grade ie standard luv camlin n. Also those scented rubbers to accessorize the pencil ends 😍

Miss those summer months buying new textbooks and books covering them with brown cover only with labels, also carrying milton waterbags for cool water n lunch boxes to keep lunch hot.

@red, Remember going round the King circle (towards Matunga side) to pickup all sorts of second hand books and magazines on the streetside. I would spend a couple of hours just perusing and bargaining some really huge range of novels/technical books and magazines.

@blue, anyone remember carrying their books and compass box in the quaint aluminum school boxes (more like mini trunks)?

Yes second hand novels as well as new ones i remember they still sell it at king circle. My mom got new davinci code there st such a low price😀

I think by my time aluminium boxes were out of circulation😂

As we go into the nooks and corner of Mumbai, I remember going into the maze of streets of Bhendi Bazaar (Chor bazaar as it is known) during the school/college days to look for bargains. Friday was the designated day on which the wares were laid out on the congested dirty narrow streets and you could bargain to your hearts content. But the first rule that I had picked up was that once you bargained and he agreed to that amount (your offer could even be 10-30% of his first offer) you had to buy it else you could be thrashed black and blue.

Those were the days when imported electronics items were in high demand. I remember picking up an HP scientific calculator (red LED type) at a virtual throw away price as he could not show it was working (just that the battery was down). Also picked up a huge collection of Rock music 33 1/3RPM records which were available at dirt cheap rates.

Those were the days when Shiv Sena created terror in those areas. I remember one friday I heard a huge commotion and everyone started running as there was a riot nearby (mostly happened during the India Pakistan cricket matches) and I ran all the way to Grant Road station.
