Chap 6- Gory alleyways
The team hadpieced the information available and had the strategy planned. Each team washaving their task cut out with Shashank guiding them and Subbu supervising them.
Aneesh and Saheb would look at the financial trail. Checking the hawala transactions, taking stalk of bank transfers, cash transfers, collection points. They will work with ED (Enforcement Directorate), IT (Income Tax) , DRB(Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) to gather details.
Salim and Venu (not introduced before but they were part of the same team)- They willlook at the communication strategies like mobile phones, social media, printmedia international communication, codes etc. They would work with the cyber cell.
Shravan and Suman- They would work on unearthing human trail, supply chain routes and storage locations.
The teams will feedback each other at the end of the day and if any of the team needs more support, they would let Sash and Subbu know. Any co-ordination with higher authorities, ministries and various departments will be done by Sash and Subbu. At all points of time they would need to co-ordinate with local NCB and state police to help them in critical situations. The strategy would be to collect evidence and build a watertight case and the evidence would be in the following areas:
Supply chain-Where is the contraband cultivated and from where is it supplied? If its in India then which are the locations and if its abroad then how is it smuggled-land, sea , air routes? Pushers, Packers,Handlers
Storage locations - Where are there storage locations and the processing facilities or are, they processed outside the country and shipped?
Communications-How do they communicate that the consignment has arrived and not arrived? How does it reach the end point or the consumer or drug addict? How do they communicate with their handlers and how do they convey that there is a requirement and of what in how much quantity? How do they get more people hooked and advertise?
Finances-How do they get money from the addicts? Most probably its cash but for rave parties, political outfits, shacks who source in larger quantities how do they get paid. Is there some kind of an online trail?
Even if they are able to map one of the supply chain end to end they would be able to trap the whole network and if one of their supply chain collapses they will be ableto pull the network down. Once they finished their discussion Suman checked ifthe CCTV footage of the truck had arrived from the checkposts. It was indeed there and once they checked it , it was evident that although the truck had checked in at the first checkpost it had disappeared into a curve from the NH highway for about 2 hrs before it had re-surfaced at the next post after skipping one which clearly meant that they had taken an off route where the consignment was loaded indicating that there was a storehouse somewhere there in that route. Suman was also right about the red car which had followed it discreetly form the airport and continued till the truck veered around near the docks to reach the shipyard. On checking they had found that the number plate of the red car was fake. This was something that needs to be investigated. The team would work from Chennai for the next few days till the Bangalore office gets all equipped and then they would move there as Bangalore seems the nearest metro to have addicts mapped and they suspected that the drug money was entering the Maoists hands through the Karnataka Andhra route.
Suman and Shravan took off in Suman’s car to explore the route that the truck had taken. They were also accompanied by two more team members Rajesh and Raghu forsupport in case it was required. Once in the car Suman asked Shravan to use the GPS and guide her as they needed to reach as fast as they can. Shravan noticed that Sumo looked a little pale and tired but before he could ask if everythingwas fine, Suman mentioned that she suspected that even the whiff of the fact that the law was trailing them, and they would move everything in a few hours with nothing in the name of evidence. Shravan made a comment “The criminals are always faster than us and we are always behind them, I so wish we wish we were faster than them “. Suman smiled at that comment and said “As long as we are not too slow and manage to get them before they are out of reach its fine and even after we do everything,we know how they take advantage of our legal loop holes and get away. So its like a game where there is no end and no clear winners and losers and we are the pawns who have to play as long as we are in the game”. Shravan agreed and then as if he recollected something and said aloud “Suman …errr…. I mean Officer Suman can we have something to eat , I mean you drive and I am just lookingat the stupid mobile …I need some work at least something to munch would be awork”. Suman glared at him and said “ Officer Malhotra, keep your hunger incheck now and do what you are doing..why didn’t you pick up something from the pantry ?By the way since you are going to stay on let’s start with first names to make our lives a little easier”. Shravan jumped on his seat jolting the car a little and turned towards Suman with a big smile and said “Thanks a million for that. I was just feeling like school, whenever the teacher would call me Shravan,I knew it was something nice but whenever she called Shravan Malhotra I knew Iwas in for a spank or it was time to call my parents”. Suman looked at him, laughed and said “ No prizes for guessing that the second option occurred moreoften”. Shravan smiled and said, “Suman you are so intelligent, you are right and till now I used to feel every time you are going to hit me”. They laughed and had some easy conversation as they approached the turn which the truck had taken. It took them on a muddy narrow stretch of road with a few houses which were probably temporarily built as was evident from the brick walls, partially thatched roofs and open windows covered with pieces of flowing cloth or used sacks. Few children were playing around as few women gathered at a community tap to fill water. Suman and Shravan drove ahead as the other two officers got down to collect some info from the dwellers.
Suvan noticed that from there on there was nothing apart from swathes of dry wasteland with patchy dry vegetation. They were not sure whether they were driving in the right direction, but they continued driving when their backup team informed that the women had told them that these kinds of trucks come often in this area but they never see them going back. Suvan were now sure that there was something in vicinity because if they drove a few more kilometres they would reach the next checkpost where the truck was next spotted. They had driven a few more kilometres along the road as it veered to a further rough stretch where the road was narrow and broken too. Suman’s sedan hit the sides as she tried to balance the wide craters that the road had and made a loud clang as she swore. Shravan laughed when he heard that and shared that if there is a storage here then it must be somewhere in the vicinity and the road was left like this intentionally to ensure that vehicles don’t use this road. Suman slowed down and let her car glide across to avoid detection in case they were still there. It was getting dark and soon they would have to navigate using their small lights and leave their vehicle. Before she could process her thoughts further an awful stench hit their nostrils as they were heading towards one of the city dump yards. Shravan tied his handkerchief around his mouth and nose but noticed Suman was struggling as she drove the car. He looked at her and nodded his head saying, “cant you say that you need help, everything you cant do on your own”. Suman looked at his brooding self and laughed but her palm was bleeding now because of the pressure she had to put while negotiating the craters. Shravan forced Suman to halt the car and much to Suman’s annoyance he pulled out the first aid kit and changed her dressing and sat in the driving seat. Suman kept looking at him and few times Shravan noticed she opened and shut her mouth and seeing that Shravan laughed and said “Thinking what words to use to shout at me , don’t worry you will have lot of options in future but for now don’t puke on me , please tie your handkerchief and then just sit quietly and let me to the favours”. Saying this he folded his hands and bent down in a namaste and smiled at her . Suman just did not know how to react with such a Shravan who was behaving like her doctor and she chose to sit quietly and help with the GPS.
They now saw a little far away on a wide stretch of land there were some dilapidated old buildings which almost looked like ruins but it was a cluster with few more a little away from the main one. The four of them approached cautiously as darkness engulfed the earth , there steps were slow and measured. Shravan was the first to go near the rickety wall of the building and after checking that the gates were not secured with some alarm or cctv or electric wiring they quietly opened the gate and backing up each other slowly Shravan, followed by Suman covering him entered as they pulled out their guns. The backup team stayed outside to be on guard and ask for help if required. Suvan pushed each wooden door to check if anybody was inside but after some inspection it looked like as they suspected the building has been vacated if it was ever used. Suman nudged Shravan to look at the ground as she shone her torch on the wide patio outside the room and they could see fresh tyre marks confirming that there were some vehicle movement. They trudged ahead as the stench became more unbearable and Suman pointed at a room at the far end of what seemed like a corridor. The door to this room was half broken as the wall on the sides had cracked with wild ferns growing through the cracks. They cautiously stepped towards the room with Shravan behind Suman and once they pushed the door open a horrendous smell of rotten blood and flesh hit them. They were not sure what they were doing here, and they flashed the large torchlights in the room to see the gory scenes and Suman clutched Shravan’s hand tight looking at the scene before here. There were patches of blood everywhere some small pieces of flesh here and there were rotting. Shravan pulled Suman out of the room as he called the backup team and headed outside to search if there were some human casualties. They did no thave to go long before they found a pit where they found 5-6 teens body dumped.Suman could hold it no more; she had been uneasy throughout the day and this was unnerving, and her stomach churned and she threw up badly as she felt ahand rubbing her back an holding out a bottle of water. She knew Shravan was there and she could not be more thankful to him for remembering to carry the backpack inside and get the bottle of water. Sash listened with his eyebrow scrunched and eyes closed at the gory tales.
The quiet hamlet woke up to the blaring of police sirens as police vehicles zipped past,he muddy stretch to reach the site. Sash had reached about 30 minutes back andhe inspected and based on his experience he mentioned to Shravan that maybe theywere trying some kind of body packaging experiments to transport drugs in deadbodies although that was something which happened decades ago probably and never heard anything of those sorts now but maybe someone was trying to invent something. He had taken a look at the dumped bodies and his conclusion was probably they were children who were kidnapped and being used as pushers (who transport drug to end consumer) and only two of them had cuts . Probably they had died due to disease or malnutrition and they were being used for these experiments. He will talk to the police and raise a case of forceful confinement for unlawful activities and get the post-mortem done to see if it was indeed true. He asked Shravan to go ahead and take care of Suman and drop her to his place so in case she needs support Kaveri will be there to help.
