Chapter 4: A Small World Indeed!
Prerna needed a time out. This was all too much. âExcuse me,â she said getting up. She needed some air. All those past emotions were creeping up into her heart.
Rishabh watched Prerna walk out. He sighed. This is not how he had imagined they would meet again. There was so much he wanted to say. So much he wanted to express but all this was fudging with his brain. Anurag hid his face in his hands. What an idiot I am! Why did I have to call Rishabh? I could have done this alone. Now Prerna must be feeling so awkward. And what was with all the unnecessary panic. She is just a beautiful girl who I could get to know better.
âBro.â Rishabh said with a straight face. âWhat happened to saying no?â
Rishabh needed all this to get over immediately. Anurag was in UK when he had met Prerna. He hadnât gotten a chance to tell him everything and now..
âI donât want to say no.â Anurag said looking at his friend. âI want to get to know her.â
âWHAT!â Rishabh exclaimed. âNo.â He said.
âWhy?â
âBecause Iâm saying so. We had decided that 45 minutes tops. I have other work also.â He said making excuses.
âOh, you can leave immediately. Sorry, I think main akele manage kar hi lunga.â Anurag said acting chilled out and casual. He would really prefer if Rishabh left.
âMain tere liye aaya aur ate hi ab mujhe bhaga raha hai, sahi hai. Kabhi help nahi karunga teri.â Rishabh said sternly.
âOh God. Stop being so dramatic. Since when are you like this.â
âSince this became about Prerna.â He blurted without a second thought. He couldnât let her go. He couldnât let Anurag get to know her like he did. Even the thought repelled him.
âWhat do you mean? Do you know her?â Anurag asked confused.
âHaanâI mean nahi. I mean-justâshe isnât good for you. She is a psycho!â he said.
âOh!â Prerna said, interrupting before Anurag could ask more questions. âSo mere baare mein decision aaplog ne le liya hai.â She said looking into Rishabhâs eyes. âThen I think I should leave.â She said, âWese bhi tum jese logo se mujhe koi rishta nahi rakhna.â
She turned around to leave with her eyes brimming with tears. Rishabh held her wrist. Anurag got up confused. She looked back at Rishabh with fury in her eyes.
âMr. Rishabh Bajaj, mera haath chodiye.â She said jerking her hand back. He let go. âI am sorry,â Rishabh said immediately looking down. This was becoming so difficult.
âSorry? How many times will you apologise?â She scolded him. She then looked at Anurag, â I thought you were a decent guy. If you were also involved in all this tab I have nothing to say.â
Anurag was completely off. He couldnât keep up with what was happening. âNahi, esa nahi hai.â He said.
âDekho,â Prerna said, not letting him finish. âItâs okay. I am not interested in anything that is even remotely related to this man.â She said looking at Rishabh. She walked out.
Rishabh could not tolerate her saying such things and marched behind her without looking at poor Anurag who was still lost.
âPrerna Ruko!â Rishabh said catching her on her way to her car. âMeri baat suno.â He said holding her wrist and pulled her towards him. She tried to free herself but he wouldnât let go.
âMujhe nahi pata tha that Anurag jis ladki ko dekhne aa raha hai woh tum ho warnaââWarna kya?â She cut his sentence. âUsko pehle hi keh dete ki na aaye mujhse milne? Ki Iâm a psycho?â She did not want to hear anything. It had taken her very long to suppress her emotions and now they were erupting in her heart. His touch was doing its work.
âHaan! Main usse aane nahi deta.â He finished. âKoi aur tumhare paas aaye.. main nahi dekh sakta!â He admitted. Prerna was thrown off by what she just heard. She looked into Rishabhâs sincere eyes. Why?Kyun abhi bhi farak padta hai?
âPrerna IâI want toâI need to tell you so much,â Rishabh said. He wasnât being able to find the right words. âI know youâre angry with me. I know Iâve hurt you enough. I know I said I wouldnât disturb you again. I know you donât want to even look at me.. But I miss you.â This is all he could say. Use your super skills psycho. Just look into my eyes. Understand me. I miss you. I am empty without you. Please forgive me.
Prerna looked into his eyes trying to figure out if he meant what he was saying. Her heart wanted to believe him but her brain wasnât convinced. âI donât care! Why is it so difficult for you to just leave me alone? Peeche hi padh gaye ho.â She said rudely. She wasnât liking the fact that even now when he was close her heart beat quickened. He let go of her. She looked at him one last time with tears in her eyes. He stood there silently looking away.
Prerna turned away without another word. She walked to her car. Tears streaming down her eyes. Why are you back? Why canât you let me live in peace? I didnât want to see you. I donât want to feel so helpless. Prerna sat in her car and took deep breaths. She would never forgive him. I wish I never went to that wedding. I wish I never took that upgrade to business class. Nothing comes for free in this world.
*Flashback*
Prerna and Rishabh found each other again at the wedding. They ended up staying in rooms next to each other because of checking in around the same time. Prerna was glad that atleast she could talk to Rishabh since she didnât know anyone other than the bride and Rishabh wasnât really interested in socialising either so they ended up talking a lot. After getting the basics of what they did, where they were from, out of the way it was during the Sangeet when Rishabh saw her leaving the hall that he walked up to her.
âLeaving already?â He asked. Prerna smiled looking at him.
âHaan, bohot boring hai.â
âShaadiâs interesting hoti bhi nahi hai.â Rishabh agreed rolling his eyes.
âI didnât mean that! Shaadi is a very intimate event. Par somewhere this notion is lost nowadays. People call crowds and it ends up becoming so impersonal and honestly a drag.â She said.
Rishabh was interested to know more about what she thought. âSo you are saying that she shouldnât have called us?â
Prerna smirked. âNo, thatâs not what I meant. This sangeet should have been just their families and friends dancing to express their love for them and wishing them luck. But inside there are professional dancers and singers. Not intimate. Not personal. So boring.â She explained.
âSo you would rather see a fat aunty dancing on stage rather than a talented dancer?â Rishabh laughed. He obviously did not agree.
âYes, I would.â Prerna said seriously. âBecause the fat aunty would be dancing for the bride & groom and that would mean something to them. It would show her love.â
Rishabh smiled. Okay, she does have very strong opinions. And interesting ones too.
âHave you eaten dinner?â He asked.
Prerna nodded.
âSo how about we go for a walk?â He asked. Prerna was hesitant. She didnât know what to say. But she didnât mind so she agreed. They walked to the beach and looked at the moon against the shore.
âIsnât this so perfect?â She asked. Rishabh looked around. âWhat is?â
Prerna couldnât believe that he didnât see it. âThis. The moon, the water, the reflection of the moon on the water. The waves, the breeze.â She said shutting her eyes.
Thatâs when Rishabh saw something beautiful. The moonlight made her face light up. Her jewellery was shining in the light and her smile had so much peace in it that Rishabh could feel it too. He looked at her intently. Suddenly he could feel the breeze too and see how perfect it all was.
Prerna looked at him expecting some witty comeback but she caught him looking at her. She wondered what he was thinking. He didnât look away when she caught his eye. He still looked with intention. Does he really think Iâm beautiful? She asked herself. âYouâre right! It is perfect.â Rishabh said. Prerna was slightly taken aback when he didnât disagree with her. It had become their thing. He had to disagree with whatever she said.
âReally?â She asked. Thatâs when Rishabh looked away realising he had said something he couldnât explain.
âI mean, itâs better than what is going on inside.â He grinned.
Prerna smiled too. âSo can I ask you something?â she said looking at him.
Rishabh looked back at her, âAre you going to psycho-analyse me?â
âAre you scared if I will?â
âI am not scared of anything.â He said putting his hands in his pocket. Ready for her question.
âGood, so I wonât psycho-analyse you. I just wanted to ask why are you always so engrossed in your work?â
âWhat sort of a question is that?â
âJust answer it.â She said, trying to understand this man standing in front of her.
âBecause⌠I want to be successful?â Rishabh said.
âEveryone wants to be. But they donât work all day.â
âI donât work all day!â Rishabh retorted.
âIn the last 24 hours whenever Iâve seen you youâve been on your phone.â She said calmly.
âI am not on my phone now..â Rishabh pointed out, unknowingly trying to prove her wrong.
âThatâs why I asked you. Do you always work because youâre lonely without it?â She said without realising that this might pinch.
And it had. Rishabh became stone. No one had ever said this to him. I am lonely? NO. I like being alone. I am happy by myself. He knew he was lying to himself. He had no response to that.
âIf you donât work you feel empty. You donât have anything else to do. And thatâs why when youâre here with me. Itâs been 20 minutes and you havenât felt the need to check your phone. If you had then it wouldnât be loneliness then it would be addiction. But itâs not. Itâs emptiness.â Prerna smiled. She had so accurately diagnosed him. She felt a sense of achievement.
Rishabh had heard enough. âShut up!â He said clenching his jaws. âYou are a horrible psychologist. I am not lonely.â He said coldly. Prerna bit her lip. Shit I said it too bluntly. I said too much. I am so insensitive.
âI am soââSave it!â Rishabh said. âI donât need an apology. I donât need any more crap from you. Itâs late, goodnight.â He said walking off. How dare she? She doesnât even know me. Rishabh Bajaj is not lonely. He is just very good at his work. He is a great businessman and so he is involved in his work.
Prerna hid her face in her hands. Youâre so stupid. Why did you have to say so much. Ofcourse he would feel bad. Itâs probably his deepest insecurity and you just blurted it out like that. Fool! Such a fool.
