So this cast is everybody but the rakshashas, since I didn't notice Ravan, Mandodari, Indrajit, Kumbhakarna, Vibhishan, et al?

He's also digitized and posted from the VHS tapes directly for the majority of the series (it had 26 cassettes, he's done maybe 18 of them). Enjoy!

Speaking of deleted scenes, I want to use the momentum of this retelecast to get the Sagars and Doordarshan to finally release a proper collectors' edition DVD set of both Ramayan and Shri Krishna with all deleted scenes restored. It's kind of ridiculous that we get additional deleted scenes in DVDs for normal movies, but for these classics they went and deleted existing scenes. Can we all band together and make this happen?!

Thanks

Yeah, it would be a good idea for them to do it - including deleted scenes. I noticed in your channel, you had a cute one of baby Kush-Luv where one of the babies got the other to cry, Sita picks him up and now the other baby gets upset 😂

While I didn't care about some of the deleted scenes - like the Manthara one you allude to, I don't see a good reason why this scene was deleted. Incidentally, in one of the videos of the Luv-Kush extension to this serial, they did show the one where Sita asks Gautami-ma not to call address her as queen, but continue addressing her as daughter.

One thing I do recall when I saw the original serial 30 years ago was that when Valmiki asked Sita to swear in open court about her chastity, Sita replied that she would, and that too in such a way that nobody had ever done before and nobody would ever do again. Somehow, that statement seemed to have been edited and watered down in every DVD and upload of that scene that ever happened. Anyone else recalls the same thing?

In Ramayana that used to air with Gurmeet Choudhary,I saw an episode where Ram was going through proceedings of his daily court . A great sage was seated in his court. Then a king of a place comes to visit Rama in the court and then leaves .This king did not notice the sage but the sage was angry that he was not wished by this king. He threatens to never come to Rama's court because of this insult. Ram begs pardon from the sage and vows to bring head of the king who did not wish the sage. Soon Ram beheads this king and offers the head to this sage to pacify his anger.

Can anyone throw some light on this ? I never understood why Rama did this .

I don't think this incident occurred in the main Ramayan (did it?).

As far as the story goes, I think this was to show Rama's dedication to his praja-jan, a prelude to what he would go on to do with Seeta. A kind of a "the praja is always right" kind of mentality.

Also, this was at the end of Treta yug, and slowly the vices of Dwapara were engulfing the people: a fine manifestation of which was the steady solidification of the birth-based caste system.

the Brahman was:

-> top caste

-> guest of Rama

-> shraap dene waale,

I guess a mixture of these teasons made Rama do that.

This actually is not in Valmiki, but is one of the many folklore tales that evolved from the stories about the divinity of Rama

The story is that Rama is at court w/ Vishwamitra amongst the seated members. The ruler of Kashi comes to greet Rama and bows before people of the court, but somehow overlooks Vishwamitra. That enrages him, and he wants Rama to present his head at his feet. So Rama agrees to do that, and the king approaches Hanuman for protection. So Hanuman builds a fortress around him w/ stones inscribed w/ Rama's name, and when Rama comes for him, no astra that Rama unleashes can penetrate it. Essentially, the moral being that Rama's name is greater than him himself

And no, Rama didn't behead the king. What happened at the end was that the king surrendered to Rama after Rama conceded defeat, Rama brought the king to VIshwamitra had had him bow his head on Vishy's feet, and the latter was satisfied. Rama couldn't have killed him since he failed to destroy that fortress around him, and couldn't do it once he surrendered

Thanks: this is really useful! Bookmarked

On a different note, can we have the complete cast list for the Ramanand Sagar Ramayan? I recall there was one in the Ramanand Sagar dedication thread either on Mytho Masti or on the Imagine TV Ananda Sagar Ramayan forum on this site?

This seems possible but many things are not shown that seems questionable .

Did this king overlook the sage on purpose ? They did show the head of the king on a plate in imagine Tv Ramayana.
