I think Rajeev's death is to solidify that Maya is alone in her fight. Not only is Karma getting back to her for killing Rishi, it's also reminding her that loses are inevitable and if she wants MJ to lose all he has, she has to lose all she has, like the people she loves.

I wonder what Vikram will lose though. Also, if someone has to kill Rajeev, it can't be a useless man like MJ, so it's Vikram, the more ruthless one!
