Amrita Preetam's biography and short stories are such a difficult / sad read. While reading her short stories, I had to take breaks for 2-3 days because they were so haunting. Living that sort of life would have been so tough. I think even in today's day and age, a woman cannot do what she did 70-80 years ago. She lived on her terms but she paid a huge price for it. She was shunned by all. It is only in posterity that we admire her.
yes she was shunned and that is what was expected at that time....she came across as threat to the society ...a bad example for patriarch mindset....but so grateful to her for living the life the way she wanted...a close call was Ismat chugtai but not like Amrita...
