He did the accident intentionally. A gave him a chance and RB already had the evidence for a clean chit which he'd have certainly revealed later if P didn't get to know the truth.
He wanted P's trust, he got it. RB isn't that white😆 he manipulates and he did manipulate P there. A slid down the trust ladder (which helped during RB's staged accident). He could've revealed everything to P in the jail itself but he played along to guilt-trip her to climb up. I consider it his version of punishing her. The man who cannot watch her tear up went through the debacle to win her trust.
