Chapter 8
Jaysingh Mansion, Medasin Street
It had been a month since Rudra started working for Maya. They have gotten a bit closer in the past couple of weeks. However, Maya still wasn’t ready to come out in front of Rudra or to reveal the truth. There were parts she couldn’t tell him and there were parts she didn’t dare to tell him.
Maya approached the library slowly, paying attention to everything around her, afraid she’ll get caught. She took out a book from the Fairy Tales section – the original Little Mermaid. When she was a kid, she was a little upset that the princess didn’t get her happy ending. As an adult, she wondered why did the princess sacrificed everything for a guy who didn’t even know she existed? Granted it sounded very fairy tale like, but in that why didn’t the prince fall in love with her? Why didn’t he go through tests just the mermaid princess did? Wouldn’t that make it even more fairy tale like? Also, couldn't the prince be around the mermaid's age or vice versa?
She was working on an alternative version already – where the prince and the mermaid are around the same age, the prince learns the truth and has to face trials as well. So far she had about seven chapters done.
The sound of approaching footsteps broke her out of her reverie and she looked around. Rudra was here! So she haphazardly put the back in the shelf before hiding behind it.
Rudra came in and looked around. He was positive someone was in the room just before he came in. “Could it be the princess?” he asked himself.
Maya gulped; she didn’t want to get caught. How would she leave now? She didn’t want Rudra to see her like this!
“I am guessing you decided to play hide and seek today?” He asked. Maya replied “No, and I don’t want to.” She didn’t want to be found. At least not today.
Rudra said “ok, sounds fair. So, why did your highness want to talk about today?” Maya asked “well, do you read fairy tales.” She wasn’t sure how would Rudra react to this and was waiting for Rudra’s reply. Rudra was quiet for a moment. “Yes. My mom used to recite those to me and my brother when we were younger. Reading them makes me feel as if she’s still with me” he then said, his eyes glistening. Maya heart squeezed. “What happened?” she softly asked. All she wanted to do was to give the guy a hug. She didn’t like that he was hurting. She didn’t like it when innocent people were hurting.
“She passed away, in a fire” Rudra whispered. It was a scarring incident for him and his brother. He remembered the day vividly. Their parents had put Rishi to bed and instructed Rudra to sleep on time before heading out. They both seemed pretty excited, it felt like they were falling in love again.
MJ and Antara were going to a birthday party, didn’t mention exactly where. The next thing Rudra remembers is a phone call that changed his life forever. His grandparents seemed mad at their father. It was odd considering they the man had lost his wife in that fire.
His dad was taken to an asylum and his grandparents as in Antara’s parents adopted Rishi and him. He remembered one time he accidentally heard his grandfather accusing his dad of killing his mom. Why would he do that? As soon his grandfather noticed him listening, he switched the topic and pulled him into his arms, acting as if nothing happened.
“Rudra” Maya called out, concerned. “Hey princess” Rudra replied softly, before saying “I mean your highness” trying to laugh and playing it cool. “I like that” Maya said. “Pardon me?” Rudra asked. “I like that you call me princess” Maya said, a soft blush running up her neck.
It was weird. What she was feeling wasn’t like anything she has experienced before. A deep feeling of care and trust. No she wasn’t in love, she didn’t experience the flutter in her stomach she was felt with Kabir– her childhood friend. The guy she knew she loved and wanted to marry. She didn’t feel her heart hammering against her chest when she saw Rudra, but rather a serenity. How can you trust someone you’ve known only for a month?
Rudra smiled up at where he thought she was hiding. “Ok then princess” he replied.
“What’s your favorite fairy tale?” Maya asked. “Don’t laugh but I kinda liked the Little Mermaid although felt the original ending was morbid” Rudra replied. “Same! I recently started working on my version!” she exclaimed. Wait. What? How did she reveal her secret hobby like that?
“Really? Do you post online?” he asked. Maya remained quiet for a moment and then replied, “yes, under the alias Taniya” “No way!” Rudra exclaimed. “She I mean you are like one of my favorite writers!” He said excitedly. “My friend Ananya loves your work! So does Rishi!” He added further. Maya smiled and said, “I am happy to know that! I am very honored but please don’t bring anyone here” her voice breaking in the latter half. She genuinely appreciated people reading her stories, but she didn’t want to meet in person. “Why of course your highness” Rudra said and curtsied. “I wouldn’t do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable” he said.
“You know for a second I thought you’re the mysterious CEO of Jay, because the map Nandini aunty gave me had a seal with the name Jay on it” Rudra said and chuckled.
“I-I am” Maya called out, a bit hesitantly. Could she trust him with this part of her secret? It wouldn’t hurt right? He wouldn’t find out the real secrets anyway. Besides people knew about the mysterious CEO. Well, somewhat.
Rudra was startled and jerked his head up. “Wait, what? You’re the Maya? CEO of Jay?” he asked, bewildered. “Yes, I am Rudra” Maya said, regaining her confidence.
“Wow. You’re, you’re amazing. Really” he said, his eyes shining with something unknown.
Maya’s heart warmed. “Thank you Rudra” she said.
“Well princess, nice to know you trust me with your secrets” he softly said. Maya’s heart hammered against her chest. Will he ask her to reveal herself?
“Maybe one day you’ll trust me enough to let me see you” Rudra muttered to himself. Unbeknownst to him, Maya heard him. She softly said, “yeah, maybe someday.”
Rudra came back to talk to her after dinner, courtesy of their walkie-talkie. The lady spoke to him about her secrets but still didn’t give him number. Strange? How did she carry on with talking to clients then?
“Maybe she has a mysterious phone number that is only reachable during her business hours” he muttered to himself.
“Why yes, you’re correct smarty pants” he heard Maya speak through the device in his hands. “You almost startled me!” he exclaimed.
Maya laughed. Rudra decided he loved the sound of her laughter. Shaking his head he said “yes princess, you court jester is here to serve” and curtsied. Not that she could see him.
Maya snorted and that made Rudra grin.
“What else can I do for you? Your highness?” he asked, as he walked in to the library. “Hmm” Maya muttered before saying “well, I would like you to tell me what you liked about Shesher Kobita.”
Rudra’s grin fell. Could he tell her about Sasha?
He sat down on one of the leather sofas.
“Rudra?” Maya called out. Rudra sighed and said, “I think I agree with you. Love somehow is both majestic and fickle.” Maya nodded her head in understanding and said “true” she paused before asking “what else do you have to say?” Rudra thought for a moment before replying “I think you’re right. Relationships can only last when the effort is mutual. I think maybe in some cases, it is majestic for one of the parties in a relationship, while for the other it is fickle and unimportant” his eyes holding a longing, a heartache.
Maya’s felt someone pull her heartstrings. Did anyone hurt him in love?
“Are you alright?” she said, trying to reach out to him through her words. Maybe one day she can give him a hug, if he lets her.
Rudra shook his head. Funny how Maya knew how he felt. “I am fine” he said and tried to smile.
Then he changed the topic. “Well princess, tell me what other fairytales or folk tales you like?” he asked. Maya stared at him through the curtains before saying “I think the story of King Midas. All that glitters will call upon your damnation if you become obsessed with it.”
Rudra nodded his head and exclaimed “Girl! Nice! I like how you think!” Maya smiled, trying to understand if Rudra was feigning this cheeriness or if he was actually ok. However, something told her that it’s best not to bring it up now.
“What folk tales do you like?” She asked. “I like the Boy Who Cried Wolf. People who lie all the time often miss the mark” he said, softly chuckling. Maya nodded and said “very true”
Maya felt, a bit relieved. It seemed the tension had somewhat dissipated. Rudra yawned, and Maya asked “sleepy?” Rudra nodded his head, refusing to agree with the obvious truth. “No just a little tired. I don’t want to sleep now” he said. Maya smiled and said “well, Mr. Smarty Pants you need to sleep! Sleep is very important!” Rudra chuckled and asked “you have a nickname for me now? Mr. Smarty Pants?”
Maya bit her lip, trying not to grin. “Why yes” she said. “I like that” Rudra replied, before adding “I like this nickname.” Maya smiled, her eyes crinkling. “Ok then! Mr. Smarty Pants it is!” she exclaimed.
Rudra softly laughed. “Go to sleep! I’ll talk to you tomorrow morning! Don’t stay up too late” Maya exclaimed, hands on her hips. Even though he couldn’t see her.
Rudra shook his head and said “Ok, ok ma’am. As you say.”
He got up and started walking towards the door.
“and Rudra?” Maya suddenly called out. He turned around and asked “yes, princess?”
“Just letting you know, if you ever need to open up or talk about anything, I am here” she softly said.
Rudra smiled, feeling his heart filling up with unknown warmth. “Ok princess. I’ll remember that. Thank you” he said.
Maya smiled and said “You’re most welcome” before softly saying “Good night Rudra.”
“Goodnight Maya” Rudra said facing the window he knew she was standing near.
Chapter 9
Jaysingh Mansion, Medasin Street
Rudra came into his room and turned on the lights. His heart felt at ease – something he hadn’t felt in a while. Maybe their whole interaction a while ago was quite cheesy – less bantering and more tenderness? Either way, it was nice. He stared at himself in the mirror – his dark circles looked pretty bad, and unfortunately the moment he stepped in to the room, sleep decided to leave.
Suddenly his phone chimed, it was a notification from Ananya. “Hey Mr. Rudy Roy, it’s been a while since I’ve seen your face, can we talk?” Rudra smiled at the message. Ananya and Rudra were childhood friends, and it was always nice to catch up with his best friend. There were people who often thought there was something brewing between the two but the reality was – they were more likely to be siblings than falling in love with each other! Just because they were of the opposite sex, doesn’t mean they were a couple.
Rudra sat down with his laptop and turned it on. Clicking on FaceTime, he called Ananya. His best friend’s face lit up the screen – her face adorning a infectious grin. “What’s up Rudy boy?” she asked, and placed the coconut in her hands beside her.
“Hey Anu, how’s everything?” he asked. “Awesome, I am loving it here. You’d be surprised to see how strong people here are!” she replied. Rudra nodded his head and asked “tell me more.” “The island of Bruell is considered to be a republic of Arandil but they don’t receive much financial support from the government. Their economy largely depends on the tourism sector here. The people are so nice, so beautiful in and out!” she exclaimed, her eyes shining with admiration. Rudra smiled and said “I am happy to hear that Anu.” Ananya smiled at him and asked, wiggling her eyebrows “So, what’s new with you?” Rudra looked away, a smile on his face.
“No way” Ananya said. “What?” Rudra looked at her, surprised. “It’s a girl isn’t it?” she teased, excitedly. Rudra shook his head and exclaimed “no, no. You got it all wrong!” Ananya said “ok, not saying you’re in love but clearly this person has a positive effect on you!” Rudra’s face broke in to a smile. “Yes, true. She’s a friend and I think she’s amazing” he said. Ananaya grinned, “any chance there’s anything more?” She was genuinely happy, and felt that there was something brewing between Rudra and said woman.
Rudra rolled his eyes and said “No, Anu. She’s my boss.” Ananya nodded her head in understanding and said, “ok, where are you working? All you told me was that you got a job as an assistant” “Maya, my boss’s name is Maya. She’s the CEO of Jay” he said. He wasn’t sure if he could tell Ananya that Maya was also a writer under a alias, so he didn’t. “No way!” Ananaya exclaimed. “I have like the biggest girl crush on her! The woman is amazing! Do you know how lucky you are!” Ananya excitedly said. Rudra blinked, rather amused and said “oh, nice” “Dude!” Ananya started, and then asked, her face breaking out into a mischievous “is she also the special friend you speak of?”
“Anu” Rudra jokingly warned. “Ok, ok, friend” she said, using air quotes. Rudra playfully glared at her. “I am kidding! I am kidding!” Ananaya exclaimed. Rudra nodded and she mumbled “maybe” Rudra groaned.
“Listen Rudra, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen you this happy. Ever since that bitch broke your heart” Ananya started but stopped midway. The sullen look on Rudra’s face broke her heart. “Dude, please understand that it was never your fault, she was just horrible” Ananya said.
“I know” Rudra softly said. Ananya frowned, and said “Rudra, never blame yourself for what that witch did.” Rudra sighed and said “I am not blaming myself anymore Anu, but the memory still hurts.” “I know dude, I know” she said. “How did my intuition fail me” Rudra asked. “It happens fam, mine failed too. I initially thought she’s nice” Ananya said. “Initially, Anu. You warned me about her when we started having problems and you never really liked Oshim!” Rudra exclaimed. “Rudra, she was your girlfriend! I don’t think you should’ve broken up with her just because I felt something off. You trusted her! So, no, it’s not your fault that you didn’t pay too much attention to what I said, and Oshim? He played the role of the perfect friend to you, and again, you trusted him. I didn’t get to know him too well, so I understood that he is just gross” Ananya said and winced.
“Your intuition was really on point” Rudra said. “For the most part yes, but remember we make mistakes and we both kinda did. Don’t be hard on yourself” Ananya said. “Ok, I guess you’re right” Rudra said and finally smiled. Ananya smiled back and said “speaking of which, I ran into your ex a while ago, before I left the country, so about two years ago” Rudra quirked one of his eyebrows. “I confronted her, asking why did she cheat on you” Ananya started and added, “she rolled her eyes and scoffed” and sipped on the fresh coconut water, before saying “she said that I am desperate, because I didn’t have a boyfriend, and was talking about boys in general with a friend I came with. The psycho was eavesdropping!” Ananya put the coconut away and bit her lip, trying to stifle her laughter. “I asked her, are you sure? Do you think the girl who shoved her tongue down someone else’s man throat, while she herself is in a relationship with a guy should be calling anyone desperate?” she stated. “The girl is just gross, like Oshim!” Ananya exclaimed. “She scoffed, like those typical mean girls from Hollywood movies. Dang. It’s been what, 8 years since we’ve graduated high school? Yet the witch is still stuck there” she said and shook her head, like she’s talking about a unruly child. “She’s childish, entitled and mean” she said.
“Anyway” Ananya started, and said, “I called out for her own shit, and said that, girl, we see the world as we are, so you see me as you are. Go figure, then she said ‘I don’t care’, and I laughed and told her no you do, which is why you’re here with that garbage can, unable to have some common decency, accusing me of shit and poking your dirty nose where you shouldn’t” Ananya paused before saying “she was gritting her teeth and it was kinda amusing to be honest. Now I said, well, you don’t mind but I am sure Lamia does. Your girlfriend. Sorry, EX girlfriend. Isn’t that right Oshim?”Ananya sighed and said, “the guy hid behind he witch” before breaking out into a laughter. “Do you know what the psycho did? She gripped onto him as if he’s some kind of possession” she added. “Then she said Oshim belongs to her and said, laughing that sure, they completely deserved each other.” Ananya let out a breath and said “now, she called me a bitch, so I thanked her and said, I try” Rudra broke out with a soft laughter. “Calling people out on their shit huh?” He asked. “Damn straight. Ain’t nobody got time for icky and trashy people!” Ananya exclaimed. They broke laughed, and Ananya wiped her tears.
“Say Anu, how did you handle your break up with Sid?” Rudra asked. “Well, the breakup was mutual. We both realized that we grew up, into very different people. I think we both felt as if we were forcing the relationship, only to figure out that the connection and spark were gone” Ananya replied, and then continued “it was bittersweet, on one hand I broke off my relationship with someone but on the other hand, I figured that this meant a new beginning for both of us” Rudra nodded his head, and Ananya said, while looking into Rudra’s eyes “breakups can be messy Rudra, and each one of them is different. In my case the breakup was amicable but in your case some trash just ripped your heart out, so yes never blame yourself.” Rudra sighed and said “I see your point and yes you’re right” Ananya and said “I try I try” and smiled. Rudra chuckled, and then Ananya added, “to be honest, I was equally hurt and disgusted by Sasha. It’s true that I didn’t have a boyfriend and the truth is I don’t need one. It’s not necessary we find love in a person, because we can find love in what we do as well, just like I did. I get to travel the world, touch so many people’s lives and make a difference! I receive so much love from so many people all over the world!” Her eyes were shining bright with happiness. Rudra smiled at her and said “I am happy Anu, I really happy for you.”
Ananaya smiled back at him and said “also, just because a girl is talking about boys doesn’t mean she needs a man. Girls talk about boys what’s wrong with that? I can acknowledge a guy is hot, and move the f*ck on, without jumping on him. Just because I think he’s so cute, doesn’t mean I’d jump on him. Hell no. I appreciate beauty but that’s about it. So, no I don’t need a man” Rudra nodded his head and said “yes ma’am.”
Voices of children could be heard through the speakers. Ananya chuckled and said, “well, that’s my cue to leave” Rudra smiled and said “I guess those are your fans.”
“My biggest fans” Ananaya said and smiled. “Before I go Rudra, promise me one thing” Ananya started. “What?” Rudra asked. “Promise me you’ll allow yourself to be happy, welcome love if it comes your way. Even it comes from a certain boss” Ananya said. “Anu” Rudra started but Ananya cut him off. “Promise me” Ananya said. Rudra sighed and said “I promise.”
