it's not that they are not thinking about their parents... A human mind is designed to help human survive... Self harm and suicide is last thing a healthy person will do. Sometimes mental trauma can be really bad... So bad that a person just do that. That's true and the sooner one realises that the better. Unfortunately, the young and the naive in love genuinely feel like that. But life has its own way of teaching lessons.
