Chapter Twenty-Three
Choice
βSo why did you really come?β Khushi asked, as soon as they were seated in the car, driving away from the Raizada Mansion.
Arnav looked at her, confused. βI told you, the driver took an emergency leave and you canβt drive.β
βYou really expect me to believe that?β
βWhatβs there not to believe?β
βWell, hate to agree with NK here, but there were a lot of cars present tonight with a lot of drivers. One of them could have easily dropped me off.β
Arnav smirked. βOh, so your issue is with all the jokes being passed around on our account.β
βNo of course not,β Khushi replied. To be honest, the jokes were what put her unease upon hearing Lavanya openly question their marriage, to rest.
βThen what?β Arnav probed. βBecause I honestly thought you would be grateful that I rescued you from my over dramatic family.β
βYour family is alrightβ¦ well, most of them anyway.β
He snorted. βOut with it Dr. Guptaβ¦ who are we gossiping about?β
βItβs not gossip. Iβm just curious β why does NK call you Nannav?β
Arnav rolled his eyes. βI couldnβt pronounce the βArβ sound when I was a kidβ¦ so naturally, NK is not going to let me forget that until my grave.β
βYou couldnβt say Arnav?β Khushi asked, a small smile playing at her lips. She found she could imagine him as a stuttering two-year old quite easily.
βThere were a lot of things I couldnβt say actually,β Arnav answered. βI was quite a failure as a kid.β
βKids are not failures. Everybody learns at their own pace, itβs not your fault. Besides, you managed to do quite well for yourself.β
βYeah, but I could have been better.β
Khushi didnβt know what to say to that. She found more and more that Arnav unnecessarily held himself deeply responsible for a lot of things, the reason for which she was yet to find. Although she was an open book to him, he definitely wasnβt, to her. He fiercely guarded his secrets. And no matter how much she wished to know about them, she knew better than to simply ask.
βDid you know that your sister knows way too much about your life?β she said after a few minutes.
βWhich one? Lavanya?β
βFor the moment, yeah. I donβt know and probably donβt want to know how much Anjali knows.β
Arnav laughed, not even slightly upset or scared of what his sisters may have revealed to her. It was almost surreal to see him so carefree around his family.
βWhy? What did Lavu say to you?β he asked.
βShe thinks you are an idiot-β
β βso do I, about her ββ
βAnd that everyone thinks that we are not realβ¦ as in real like a husband and a wife.β
Arnav simply smiled, and kept his eyes trained on the road, which was deserted owing to the late hour.
βSo?β Khushi pressed when she understood she wasnβt going to get an answer.
βSo what?β
βSo why does she think that?β
βBecause we are notβ¦ a real husband and wife.β
Khushi rolled her eyes. βWell obviously! But how does she know that? Did you tell her?β
βI donβt need to.β
βSo what then?β
Arnav shrugged. βThere is nothing to explain hereβ¦ she is my best friend. She is the first person I told when I started dating my first girlfriend. She is the one I go to when I am pissed off or happy, usually in that order. I would be stupid to think that she didnβt notice what kind of a relationship you and I share.β
Khushi nodded, seeing the affection in his eyes. No wonder his sisters loved him. βYou do know that she is crazy though, right?β
βYou donβt even know the half of it,β he replied, laughing. βBut she means wellβ¦ genuinely that is.β
βI have no doubts about that,β Khushi said, who had warmed up to Lavanyaβs attitude over the last month. βBut donβt you think she told the rest of the family about us? Because how can they all think that you and I donβt....?β
βThey donβt all think like that,β he answered, unperturbed with her questions. βJust my Mom, Dad and Diβ¦ and itβs not because of Lavu.β
βThen who?β
He took a deep breath, hesitating.
βWhat?β
βYou sleep on the couch.β
βSo?β
βA real husband and wife as you put it, donβt sleep in separate rooms.β
Khushi didnβt follow the point he was making. βYes, I know. But we sleep in separate rooms in our apartment, not when we visit your family.β
βOh, so thatβs why you sleep on the couch?β
Khushi was now aghast and slightly irritated. βAm I missing something? And since when do you have a problem with me sleeping on the sofa? Isnβt that the whole point of this cover-up? We pretend to be husband and wife, not actually be husband and wife?!β
βI donβt have a problem with where you sleep Khushi, but I certainly donβt see why you have to sleep on the couch when there is a much more comfortable bed available.β
βSo you want me to sleep on the bed? With you? Everyday?β
Arnav sighed. They had arrived at their building, where the valet was waiting for them to descend the car. βI donβt wantyou to do anything, I am just saying you can sleep on the bedβ¦ I had just assumed that you liked sleeping on the sofa all this time.β
Khushi racked her brain. All she could recollect was his cold glares from the early days of their marriage, which used to make her wish the earth would just open and swallow her up whole. What else was she supposed to assume of his stony silence? If he was okay with sharing the same bed, couldnβt he have just said so?
A dim bell rang somewhere. He had said it. Not once, but twice. On the day after karva chauth, when they were hammering out the fine details of their deal, he said, quite clearly βthe bed is not so bad to sleep on you knowβ. The second time had been in her dimly lit bedroom in the Gupta Manor, when he had said, βthe bed is big enough for both of usβ.
Could it really be that she had misunderstood his words on those two occasions and had wrongly assumed that she was unwelcome in his room?
Taking her silence as the end of their conversation, Arnav got down from the car and handed over the keys to the valet. She had no choice but to follow him to the elevators.
βWhy are you bringing this up now?β she asked quietly.
βBecause you brought it up.β
βI did?β
βYes, you wanted to know how my family knows we are pretending with this marriage thing. And itβs because you sleep on the couch and not in the room with me.β
βThat still doesnβt answer my question! How would they know-β
βLata.β
It took Khushi a moment to process that. βWhat?β
βLata worked for my mother for ten years before she started working for me, and that too on my motherβs insistence.β
Khushi was dumbfounded. By the time she found her voice, they were inside the apartment.
βSo you are telling me that Lata, your housekeeper, gives daily updates to your mother about what you and me are doing?β
βWell not daily, but more or lessβ¦ yeahβ
βAnd it didnβt occur to you, even once in the last four months, to mention this to me?!β
βWhatβs the big deal? I thought you knew why Lata was here every day-β
βThe big deal,β she stressed, trying to reign in her frustration. βIs that I must look like the worldβs biggest hypocrite, lying to your family about how happy we are when they all know that we donβt even sleep in the same room!β
Arnav sighed. βThey donβt think you are the hypocrite.β
βThey donβt?β
βNo... they think I am.β
Khushi didnβt see that coming βWhat? Why-β
βDo we really have to do this now?β he interrupted, exasperated. βYou have a shift at 6 a.m. tomorrow and I have to be at the airport by 7.β
βWhy are you going to the airport? And yes, we are doing it now.β
βI am going to London for a week.β
βYou are going to London?β she repeated blankly, seriously getting tired of receiving so many jolts in one night. βAnd you didnβt think it was important to tell me?β
βWhatβs there to tell? Itβs just a yearly visit to our office. Papa is still too weak to travel, so naturally I have to go in his place.β
Khushi didnβt know how he could be so calm about the matter. Was he really oblivious to a simple code of conduct or was she being overly nosy?
βLet me get this straight Arnav, you are going out of the country for a week and as yourβ¦β she broke off, words falling short.
He looked at her expectantly. βYes?β
Khushi clasped her hands, undecided on how to continue. She had meant to say wife, but she wasnβt that. So then if she wasnβt his spouse, what was she? A friend? Had they become friends? He definitely was to her. But was she to him?
βOkay,β she finally said in surrender. βAs your roommate, next time you go somewhere, I have to be informedβ¦ preferably a few days beforehand and not seven hours before you board the plane. Is that clear?β
βCrystal.β
βSo why does your family think youβre a hypocrite?β
He once again hesitated.
βArnav,β Khushi said, her shoulders falling in exhaustion. She didnβt have much energy left. βI am foreign to your family. I need to know about them so that I donβt make a stupid mistake and put our agreement in jeopardy.β
Arnav took a deep breath. βI donβt know the circumstances for which you agreed to our marriageβ¦ Iβd guess that it wasnβt voluntary.β
βIt wasnβt,β she agreed, not understanding what he was trying to say.
βWellβ¦ It was for me.β
Silence followed his words.
βWhat?β she croaked, hoping that she had heard him wrong.
βI had a choice in our marriage.β
βYou chose to get married to me?β Khushi asked blankly. βLike consciously, with full understanding of what you were getting into?β
βYes.β
Khushi felt as if she was seeing him for the first time, as if the man she had made peace with in the last one month was not the same one standing in front her.
βSoβ¦β she said, trying desperately to give him the benefit of the doubt. βWhyβ¦ why did youβ¦β
Words failed her.
But Arnav seemed to understand, for he nervously shuffled his feet before answering.
βI donβt knowβ¦,β he admitted with honesty. βI just know that I couldβve said no if I really wanted toβ¦ but I didnβt. And by the time I realized it was wrong, that this wasnβt going to work out, it was too late.β
Khushi didnβt know what to make of that confession. All this time she had assumed that he was forced to be in this relationship just like her, that he too had an unreasonable father with unreasonable demands, and yet there he stood, telling her quite calmly that he chose to marry her, that he willingly decided to make her his wife and then subject her to all the misery in the world. Did he even realize what he was telling her?
βButβ¦ but that day in the car,β she said, still in disbelief. βWhen you were dropping me at the hospitalβ¦you said this marriage was forced on both of us-β
βI had just meant that we were backed into an unfortunate situation-β
βOnly because you changed your mind about me.β
His eyes were pleading with hers. βDonβt take it the wrong way,β he whispered.
βThen what is the right way?β
βIt doesnβt change anything-β
βIf it helps you sleep better, then sure go ahead and believe that,β she replied, icily.
Arnav simply looked at her, perhaps out of words to offer comfort. It was very rare for them to be on the opposite ends of a situation, and Khushi hated every bit of it, but she couldnβt just ignore it like him and pretend that everything was okay in the world.
It was in his nature to ignore problems, but not in hers.
βYour shift starts at 6 a.m. tomorrow,β he finally said. βYou should get some sleep. I will drop you off on my way to the airport.β
βYou donβt have to.β
He didnβt respond, watching her face with caution. Then turning away, he walked towards the bedroom, ready to call it a night. He stopped just at the door and said:
βI know you are upset, but if you are sleeping on the sofa because of me, then donβt. The bed is yours as much as mine.β
And with that he walked inside, making sure to leave the bedroom door wide open. But Khushi curled up on the sofa, wishing she could just un-hear everything she was told.

So I think Khushi has finally reacted like how she should have at the beginning of the story⦠she is coming to terms with the marriage, now that she is far from the terror of her father.
Thoughts?
Archi
Iβm as confused and conflicted as she is.
Damn ittt.
*breaks glass Arnav style to show my frustration*
But on a serious note, Khushi had the most natural reaction to the revelation. She would warrant some time and a clear head space to accept her situation.
Iβm curious to know if the distance would make their hearts fonder or not?!
Nice update. I am confused about Arnav bringing up about the marriage now when they are going friendly. May be he wants to clear why his family call him hypocrite and I have a feeling that mr Gupta is helping arnavβs Company with this marriage proposal which khushi is unaware of and he also wants to take the benefits of agreeing to get married with khushi. Waiting for the next update.
Hmm.... And I had started to think why this sudden change of heart in Arnav?
He IS a hypocrite. He wasn't forced to marry like Khushi was, still he chose to vent his frustrations on Khushi. Unlike him, Khushi was forced to marry but she chose to ignore his rude behaviour and play the bahu role perfectly. I had started to warm up to Arnav but he again slipped down in my eyes. I had thought that his parents didn't like Myra and forced him to marry a sanskari Khushi as well as for financial gains of the merger. But now they dont look like such parents and truth is also out that he wasn't forced. Hmm.. I am disappointed in him.....so will be Khushi.
