ETA: Re GB vs any other:

-you also need a strong lobbying body to even have chances to be nominated. Ther producers of GB have that clout because - like it or not- Zoya has big American appreciation since ZNMD era. There aren't that many that have bigger US clout/appreciation: maybe Kayshap (but he has more in France/Europe) and of course the biggies like SLB and Hirani(lost a lot since allegations) and such.. but from Indie(meaning Indie as type of movie, not movie from India) market.. nah.. only Zoya has the reach

You need some actors that have SOME kind of recognition OUTSIDE India for their work (again, RS and AB have that, others aren't well known and it matters).. so there's SOME kind of 'fanbase' for the movie- a natural movement of 'pro' voting to aid the 'behind the scenes' lobbying.

It's like voting: you need the charismatic leaders (lead actors), the behind the scenes lobbyists (producers with clout) but you also need support from general population..a natural love for the 'leads'.. or you don't get a big enough majority (your movie doesn't get nominated).

I might like or not GB but I can see that by choosing GB India is trying to get the nomination at least- and I don;t think you've even had a nomination since 2000.

SO I'd say they are smart by choosing GB.

Wider appeal is important- whether we like it or not.

The themes in Gully Boy will appeal more to the Western industry - heck I admit it, they like to see foreigners/ Asians struggle.. they like to see others being poor so they can feel entitled and somewhat superior.. and they like to see a dark-horse story.. the fight of the good versus the bad and 'the good guy winning against the odds'.

Think of ROCKY - this is the Indian Rocky.

Look at all movies that did well in the west.. majority are strong on such themes.

Do you know anything about Hellaro? It shows the struggle of married women in a distant village to just earn few moments of happiness in their life.

Gully boy while a good watch, is not as impactful. It was too easy for Murad IMO..There wasn't some great struggle shown. I love Ranveer, Alia..But frankly if they come back together I want them in a better movie than this.

Yes I do.

... see my above posts ( made two after your other reply) regarding WHY Gully Boy will have better chances: it's a lot more than just the subject. There's cast, lobbying, universality , appeal and so on.

Whilst Hellaroo would win NA in India it would be mostly ignored in circuits where lobbying is needed.

I'd have wanted Tumbbad from 2018 to represent India- but I can see why it would have no chance on the Oscars platform. I am a realist.

I hope you get to see it through a 'clinical' perspective, irrespective of which movie you are a fan of: the best chances from this year's Indie category to win even a nomination is Gully Boy.

Time has come close to see whether GB makes it to the list! .. It would be nice to see an Indian movie get selected fosho ... tho I am still bummed out that a movie like Tumbbad didn't make the selection. That movie got snubbed when in all aspects it's much better than GB!

I dint..but Oscar did see it from clinical perspective and rejected it. I reiterate..Gully Boy was a good film, just nothing extraordinary the way this forum hyped it up to me.

I want a Ranveer Singh movie to win an Oscar..I love him, but its just not this one.and if a Lootera had managed to crack it it would have been just the most beautiful and soulful movie to win it,

On Tumbbad - It should have..unfortunate that it dint even get considered.
