Chapter 15: Trials of truth

Part 2: Smoke and fire

“Not helping” Khushi told Arnav shaking her head at him.

“What’s not helping?” he asked playfully.

“Do you realize what you did right now? She is going to think that there is something between us”

Arnav laughed

“What’s new in that, she already believes so”

“And you thought you would pour some fuel into that fire?”

“As long as you realize it is a fire”

“Well, it could be just smoke for all its worth…”

“There is no smoke without fire”

Khushi stared at him for a few seconds

“What are you trying to imply?”

Arnav simply shrugged at her

“Ready for the game?”

“You still want to play?”

“You don’t want to?”

“No!”

“Scared, are you?”

“No.” Khushi stated. “We are not teenagers, It’s high time we stop behaving like one”

“I am definitely not behaving like one” said Arnav incredulously.

“Really? What is truth or dare? An adult game?” she asked

Arnav laughed out aloud

“What did you call it? Khushi, an adult game?"

"why? its not a taboo word. Is it?"

"No, But I don't want to think much about it, Its giving me other ideas that you dont want to hear about"

Khushi opened her mouth wide

"you are incorrigible”

He laughed as she glared at him incredulously. When he finally sobered up, she started to speak

“I know you want us to talk and you don’t need an excuse to talk, I mean, that’s what you want to do right? Talk about whatever is between us?”

He stared at her for a long time and slowly smirked at her

“Finally you are done with beating around the bush” he commented.

“Perhaps” She smiled resignedly.

“and what made you so open about this all of a sudden?”

“I think I am also done with dodging the situation.”

“You weren’t so keen this morning”

“I was not so keen a few minutes back as well, but right now, we are already sitting here facing the situation, there is no point is escaping this talk. It was long coming. Also, I suddenly realized that it is better to face the demon rather than running away from it, it doesn’t seem to stop chasing me”

“Am I the demon?”

“Of course not. You know what is”

“You are not as naïve as you portrayed yourself all these days”

“I was not portraying myself as a naïve ablanaari” she said double quoting her hands “I am usually well aware on what is happening around me”

“So, you also figured out and acknowledged what was happening between us?”

“It was so obvious that others started to notice, why wouldn’t I be aware of?” she asked him “I was only trying to…” she paused

“Ignore?”

“May be, yes”

“Why?”

“Isn’t that also obvious? This is not right.”

“What is not right?”

“This crush between us”

“Crush?”

“I don’t know what else to call it… Infatuation perhaps”

Arnav chuckled shaking his head at her as if telling her she figured it out all wrong.

“Ok, why do you think it is wrong?”

“Don’t you start beating around the bush now” said Khushi “You know what’s wrong”

“Spell it out Khushi, what is your concern?”

“How about the fact that you are engaged to someone else?”

“Not true, I am not engaged to anyone”

“pch.. I meant to say that you are as good as engaged. You are getting engaged soon.”

“Not true either… I am not getting engaged to Sheetal, if you mean that”

“What do you mean, your Dadi announced your engagement with Sheetal a few days back”

“It was Dadi’s wish, not mine and I am not going to honor that.”

“That doesn’t change the fact that you are in a relationship with Sheetal right?”

“Wrong!” he replied calmly.

Khushi looked outrageous

“What do you mean?”

“I and Sheetal are not in a relationship anymore” Arnav told her calmly

Khushi opened her mouth to say something and then shut it again.

Khushi stared at Arnav as if in disbelief.

“Does she know that?” she asked finally

“Who? Dadi?”

“No, Sheetal”

Arnav almost laughed out loud at her sarcasm.

“of course!”

“and she is ok?”

“I think so”

“But you both are still in touch with each other… you call each other, you meet her often, you work on projects, you dine together…”

“yeah” Arnav told her as a matter of fact “I do all that with you as well”

“The other day, I saw you both...” she hesitated to complete the sentence.

“Kissing?” he asked her

“well yeah” she was looking anywhere but him

“that was the day we broke up and it was a good bye kiss”

“and I interrupted that?”

Arnav nodded at her scrunching his lips.

“I’m sorry” she whispered to him

“Don’t be” he told her without missing a beat.

They stared at each other for a few seconds as Khushi slowly realized the impact of his words and finally she heaved a sigh which later broke into a smile hearing Arnav chuckle at her reaction.

“What happened between you and Sheetal? I thought you were going strong”

“we were seeing each other briefly, but I don’t think I was ready for a serious relationship with her. I had an inkling that she was starting to consider it seriously, I had to put a stop to it before she could hurt herself.”

“Why? Don’t you believe in commitments and serious relationships?”

“You mean getting married?”

Khushi nodded. The fact that he had called off the relationship just because the girl was getting serious about the relationship, troubled her. Such relationships always left a bad taste in her mouth.

“I strongly believe in it” he told her “But I want to fall in love before that”

Khushi nodded understandingly

“How many girls were there before Sheetal?”

Arnav gauged this question carefully before answering it, hoping he won’t land in trouble by answering it truthfully.

“I should have at least been in a relationship with 5 or 6, casual dates should be more, I have lost count, to be honest with you.”

“and you have never ever fallen in love before- with any of them”

Arnav shook his head.

“Not romantically. But I am capable of loving people, I love my family”

Khushi chuckled.

“I know you love your family”

“Ok, enough about me, It’s your turn now”

“My turn?”

“hmm, tell me about you”

“Me, what is there to know about me?”

“The same thing you asked me. How many were there before me?”

“So obnoxious, you are not even there yet”

“We will decide that later, Now I am waiting for your answer”

Khushi bit her lips.

“Come on, I told you my story”

“That was your call and this is mine!”

“This is not fair Khushi”

“I have had just one heart break” she said hesitatingly.

“Should I be jealous?” asked Arnav

Khushi laughed.

“I don’t know”

“Who? Vikrant?”

“Chee, you know I hate him” she mimicked a punch at him.

“then it should be Happy Singh?”

“OMG! He is such a cute friend; he would never give me any heart break, what so ever”

“I would not give you one either, promise”

“Of course friends don’t give heartbreaks”

“Don’t even try that”

Khushi grinned

“Oh! I forgot- your brief affair with Payal... Now she is married and you are heart broken, it all fits”

Her grin turned into a frown

“Actually its ACP Abhimanyu”

Arnav rolled his eyes

“you are so busted; you don’t even know him”

“so confident, where did this confidence go when you lied to me that he is married”

“I didn’t lie. You assumed and I didn’t correct you.”

“Its the same difference anyway. Anyway I know he is not married, I looked up his FB account the other day.”

“Wow, that was smart of you. So you can now fix your heart break, may be I can help you with a quick fix?”

“Haha, very funny” Khushi said sarcastically.

“Jokes aside, I think I know”

“Really? Try then”

“It was Aman.”

Khushi looked into Arnav’s eyes, there was an anticipation in it, wanting more than anything to negate his statement or perhaps to affirm it, either way, she knew he will be relieved. Because she had mentioned her heartbreak in past tense, he knew that all she had to do was to reply and he wasn't really worried about her past.

Just then, someone else joined them at the table, cutting short their conversation.

It was Anjali.

Arnav was almost annoyed before he saw her face. One look at her face, they knew something was wrong.

“Kiddo what happened? You alright?”

Anjali nodded, but she was sweating profusely and was breathless.

“Anjali, why are you shivering like this?” Khushi asked reaching out for her hands which were ice cold.

“I am fine. I just want some water”

Arnav passed on a glass of water to her as he continued to question her

"Anjali, tell me whats wrong? You broke something?"

"no"

"You got scared of something?"

She quickly shook her head to mean no.

"Someone screamed at you?"

She again shook her head.

Arnav took her phone to check if she had received any recent calls

"Did anyone threaten you?"

She shook her head again, but turned slightly around.

Khushi saw Anjali turning around to look at some one walking away hurriedly

“Who is he?” she asked as Anjali panicked.

Their truth n dare game was fun at least they acknowledged that something exists between them and I hope the Aman mystery solves soon,I wonder why Anjali was so terrified n from whom plz update soon.
