It was so so well done. It established that he'd studied her well, but that in the end he wanted to at least make her a little more comforted by giving her control over what she could pick and choose.
2) This is such an important nuance. He is an incredibly effective communicator. On so many occasions he says - it may not be necessary but I'm going out for xyz, I'm doing xyz, he always always tells her what he's up to and where he is going. He knows that she may not care, but it's his duty to inform regardless.
