Chapter 2
She also made the meanest cup of coffee of which he expected to smell when the main door opened to chaos. Normally, when he reached the home after his run the entire mansion smelled like a coffee shop and Rajan, the head of staff was waiting at the door with his protein and oats smoothie. All he saw right now was his staff waiting by the stairs as Rajan was shouting orders at kitchen staff to fetch oranges and make his protein shake. They were behind schedule, his wife was nowhere to be seen and no one has noticed him till now. This was not normal.
āRajan,ā he called out to his head of staff as Rajan turned, he asked in restrained anger, āWhat is going on here?ā
āSir...ummm,āRajan hesitated, āUmā¦Maāam was not here this morning,ā
āLet me remind you Rajan that this house managed to run without Mrs. Bajaj for 9 years before she came,āHe cut off his head of staff before he could come up with an excuse, āIf Mrs Bajaj did not come down today, that does not mean that nothing will get done in the house, I am sure she has a good reason for not being here.ā
āYes sir,ā Rajan replied, āI am sorry that we are a bit behind schedule but Maāam is not feeling well and we all are very worried, hence the commotion.ā
But the last words Rajan were said to an empty room because the minute he had said that Mrs Bajaj was not feeling well this mansion witnessed something that has never happened before. The man of the house ran up the stairs in a dead run.
āWhat is going on?ā Rishab asked Miss Rose when reached room and only saw her with SnehaāWhere is Prerna?āHe asked as his eyes searched for his wife.
āShe is in the bathroom,ā Miss Rose replied, āShe has been there for the past half an hour, wonāt even open the door and let me check on her,ā
āDoctor?ā Rishabh asked Miss Rose as he knocked on the door, āMrs Bajaj,ā he called out, āPlease open the door,ā There was no reply just sounds of his wife throwing up. Miss Rose informed him that the doctor will be another 30 minutes. He instructed her to take Sneha out of the room who was picking up on the tension in the room and getting agitated, then he knocked on the door again, āMrs. Bajaj, Please,ā he requested again. To say he was worried, it would be an understatement. Ruhi has had a difficult pregnancy and in the end he had lost her. Yes, they were not in love but Prerna was his responsibility until she could figure out that his method was a little twisted but it was for her benefit. To his surprise, he heard the door unlock, he quickly rushed inside. He saw his wife sitting on the floor over the toilet bowl. Tears streaking her face she looked up and asked feebly, āIs Sneha gone out of the room?ā
His heart softened a little bit hearing Prerna put his daughter first. āShe is fine, donāt worry about her right now. Miss Rose has her,ā Rishabh said sitting right behind her as another bout of nausea hits her. One hand held her head as other went around her waist to steady her, his body covered hers, engulfing her as if he wanted to protect her from any form of pain and harm.āI am right here,ā he murmured to comfort her. And somehow his words did comfort her which surprised her even when she was totally exhausted, thanks to morning sickness. Once she was done, he helped her stand up, wiped her tear streaked face with a cold cloth as he held her, āCan you stand by yourself?ā Prerna nodded in affirmation as she looked up to see that he was not wearing a shirt.
āFinish cleaning up, let me get you a change of clothes,ā Rishabh ordered and went outside, grabbed a simple dress for her, āChange into this and do not lock the door,ā he commanded again.
As Prerna was washing her face she could not figure out what had happened, sometimes her husbandās moods give her a whiplash. A minute ago he was holding her head over the toilet bowl assuring her and a second later he was angry. How did this manās brain work? Prerna wondered as she opened the door.
āAre you okay?ā Mr. Bajaj demanded again the minute the door opened but before she could reply, her feet gave out in weakness but Mr. Bajaj picked her up the minute she swayed a little. Her arms automatically went around his neck for support. He made his way to bed. His body heat radiating into her cold body was comforting. Those strong muscles held her tightly yet with a feather soft touch as if she would break. She had never felt more safe in her life, not even when her father was alive or when Anurag was with her. He smelled of sweat, spices and tobacco. She wrinkled her nose and asked as he laid her down on the bed, āI thought you had quit?ā
āWhat did you eat today?ā Rishabh demanded instead as if he had not heard a single word. He picked up the room phone, dialed the kitchen intercom and ordered Rajan for a glass of orange juice and crackers.
āI asked you something Mr. Bajaj,ā Prerna countered weakly as she rested her head on the pillow.
āHas your nausea been this extreme before Mrs. Bajaj?ā Rishabh asked as he laid a hand on her forehead to check if she had a fever and mentally sighed in relief that she had none but she was shivering so he took the duvet and covered her. āI am asking you something Mrs. Bajaj, has your morning sickness has always been this bad or today was the first time because morning sickness usually subsides in the fourth month,ā He inquired again covering her so that she would get warm.
āI also asked you a question Mr. Bajaj but you as usual ignored it.ā Prerna retorted with her eyes closed. She did not trust her eyes at this moment, they might betray her and she did not want to give her husband the satisfaction that his touch affected her at all. He was still holding those accusations from Switzerland against her. āYou seem to know a lot about pregnancy though? Anything I should know?ā
āRuhi had a difficult pregnancy, so I read up a lot to help her through it,ā Rishabh simply replied, āWhy did you not tell me Mrs. Bajaj that you were having tough mornings and why was I not informed today?ā He asked exparated. His wife had a very silent stubborn streak. He was worried and scared for her and she not giving him an inch.
Before Prerna could answer there was a knock on the door and then Rajan entered with orange juice, crackers, fruits for the mistress of the house and protein shake and coffee for his boss. Rishabh took the tray from him and practically closed the door on his face.
āOpen my closet,ā Prerna said opening her eyes. She was rather enjoying playing with her husband.
āExcuse me,ā Rishabh said with indignation as he turned with the food tray.
āI said open my closed Mr. Bajaj and there is a white gift bag in there. Sneha had bought you a t-shirt as present. Please wear it.ā Prerna explained.
There was a twinkle in his wifeās eyes and that was very dangerous but since he could not keep on walking around her shirtless, he put the food tray on the other side of the bed and did as instructed. Prerna watched her husbandās every move as he took the t-shirt out of the bag. After the initial look of horror, he threw his head back and gave a full bodied laugh. She had never heard more enchanting sound.
āNice colour, right Mr. Bajaj?ā Prerna asked.
āMy daughter has excellent taste.ā Rishabh said he put on the t-shirt. It was neon pink.
It always surprised her that as a person Mr. Bajaj was very particular but with Sneha he was game for everything.
āSo will you answer my questions now Mrs. Bajaj,ā He asked handing her the crackers and juice as he sat on the other side of the bed.
āWill you answer mine?ā She retorted
āI already did answer one of yours,ā he said watching her like a hawk.āSlowly, Mrs. Bajajā he urged and was next to her in an instant as she choked on the juice. āSmall sips, give your system time to adjust.ā
Prerna looked straight into his eyes, held his gaze and asked, āWhat would you have done if you had known Mr. Bajaj? Hire another assistant to talk to me? You do not want anything to do with me other than being the mistress of the house and be Snehaās mother.ā
āI would have been there for you Mrs. Bajaj just as I was today.ā Rishabh replied biting back his anger. His wife was not well, āYou accused me of ill-intentions Mrs Bajaj. I was just maintaining my distance and giving you space. Yes, I wanted a mistress for the house and a mother for Sneha but that does not mean that I have given you any indication that you and the child in your womb are not important to me. I never wanted you to overdo. If you had any complaints about my behaviour you should have come to me but as usual your solution was to punish yourself. You did not even think about the life growing inside of you.ā Rishabh retorted, ā Now I am going to ask to one last time was today an exception or your morning sickness has been this bad all the time,ā
āToday was just an exception, I think it was the chaat me and Sneha had last nightā Prerena said quietly.ā
He could not believe what he was hearing, āYou. Had. Chaat. For. Dinner?ā Rishabh said spacing out each word. āOut of all the irresponsible things Mrs Bajaj,ā he roared but stopped short when his wife took both his hands in hers sitting up across him.
āDo you mean it?ā Prerna asked, āWhen you say that this child even though its Anuragās is important you, do you mean it?ā
Where had this fear in her come from, he wondered but replied, āYes, Mrs Bajaj I mean it. This child is as important as Sneha. It does not matter who his biological father is, he will be born as a Bajaj and his fatherās name will be Rishabh Bajaj if that is what you want.ā He reassured her. He was not the only one scared in this room he realized, āI had not quit smoking, I just do not smoke in the house. It's harmful to the baby.ā He answered her question finally. āBut looks like I am the only one worried about this unbornās health, Chaat, really,ā he asked again.
āI am fine Mr Bajaj, do not worry. I am not Ruhi.ā She eased his fears just as he had hers. āOur child will have only one father and his name is Rishabh Bajaj,ā She answered his unasked question, āYou hurt me by manipulating me into marriage and I hurt you with my accusation. We will be welcoming our second child in five months. How do you propose that we raise two kids, living under the same roof if you would not even talk to me?ā
Her question rang in his ears and in the mansion. For the first time in years, the man of the mansion has no answer. How could he, after what he had planned for this childās biological father?
Okay, I know this update is just one big scene and a lot of rambling. I started it as something else but then ended up here. Now I am lost as I think this is whole bunch of rambling. So here goes nothing. I am ready for chappals
