CHAPTER 4. HOSTEL LIFE PART II

The days passed and Khushi settled in very easily at her College. At hostel front, Dhruva and Rati became her best friends and even Shweta was slowly melting in regards to her. Nandini found a kindred soul in Khushi who was traditional in many ways that Nandini approved of her. Months passed and Khushi started taking part in sports and debates and all kinds of college activities thanks to Tanya who encouraged her. Tanya was, of course, instructed indirectly through her brother by Arnav.

Soon December came and went and as the time went, Khushi started to slowly forget about Dilli and her life there. The activities and programs and lectures had her so busy that she didn't even have time to think about her old life. She never noticed that Aakash's photo on her side table had fallen face down.

Khushi did think about Aakash though. It is not as if she fully stopped doing it. But her friends were always interrupting her about something or other, so she rarely got think of him for more than few seconds. And at hostel, with Dhruva and Rati around, she had no chance of thinking about Aakash, Arnav or Naaniji. The only one she spoke to was her father every Sunday. And while she used to ask about Aakash a lot in the start, now she mentioned his name only once in a while, too excited and lost in her new world to wonder what he was doing.

One odd thing that happened was that some random guys of her college asked Khushi out on a date. Poor girl! Didn't know what date meant when she was asked the first time in front of her friends. Her friends were the one who explained the meaning. And once explained, Khushi refused. The reason behind her refusal was not just Aakash though. It was also because she had no time for it. Her college life was so hectic that she didn't even have time to breathe.

Soon New Year 's Eve came and went. Khushi attended a party that Tanya threw and which ended up as a sleepover for all four girls. They had fun partying till late morning and Khushi woke up feeling groggy, tired but happy.

Next thing she knew it was Valentine's Day. That was the day she missed Aakash a lot. She saw nothing but couples all around her. Dhruva, Rati, even the girls from her college including Tanya, Kanika and Siddhi had boyfriends to spend the day with. This broke Khushi's heart and she wanted nothing but Aakash to be around. She saw the girls being gifted roses and chocolates and Khushi wished someone did the same for her. The whole day passed with Khushi moping around the college and then at the hostel. Khushi was about to hit the bed when Matron called for her. She told Khushi that in the evening, someone left Khushi a gift and Matron remembered at that moment about it. She handed over the gift and Khushi eagerly opened it once she reached her home. In it was the cutest teddy bear that Khushi ever saw.

Khushi checked the note that came with it. It read I know you are sad. So I sent something to cheer you up!' Khushi grinned. Must be her friends who did it. Tanya had noticed her sadness and had asked Khushi many times if she was ok. This must be Tanya's doing.

Meanwhile, at Raizada Mansion, Arnav Singh Raizada smirked. Tanya had informed him through her brother that Khushi was sad because it was Valentine. So Arnav ordered a gift for Khushi online. He knew by now it must have reached Khushi. He hoped the teddy made her happy.

Months passed and soon it was the end of the second year. But Khushi had no plans to go home for vacations. Her third year would be brutal, she had been warned. So when she came to know that Tanya was going to join some coaching classes for it, Khushi also joined. She got herself a part time job as a waitress to pay for it and before she knew it, it was time for college to start again. The college started and with it, her being proposed by random guys also began. After saying no for a while, Khushi got tired of explaining about how she wanted to focus on her studies. So she simply started saying she liked someone else. But for once, Aakash did not come to her mind when she lied. Infact, now Aakash's photo was relegated to her drawer as other photos of her friends found their place on it. She had gone on picnics, parties, clubs and long trips with them and many of the photos taken during the trips found their place on her side table.

One remarkable incident happened in the first two months into her new college year. She had come to the hostel tired and exhausted after her evening shift only to see girls giggling around some magazine, seated on Dhruva's bed. What was Dhruva and Rati going crazy about? It surprised Khushi more when she found Shweta too looking at the thing the other two were looking at.

"What's going on?, Khushi asked as she neared them.

All three looked at her and then giggled.

Rati explained, "Oh! Look at this hottie! She thrust a magazine under Khushi's nose.

Khushi grabbed it and looked at it carefully. It was Arnav's photo on the cover page of the magazine.

Khushi shrugged, "Oh! It's a photo!

"It's a photo!, gasped out Shweta surprisingly. The other two looked at Khushi with horror.

"This is not just random photo. This is ASR!, Shweta squealed.

Khushi looked at her confusedly, "Yes! I know! What's the big deal?

Khushi genuinely didn't understand what got her friends so excited. It was Arnav, dressed in his usual 3 piece suit, glaring. So? Why are everyone going crazy over it?

"What's the big deal? Girls! Did you hear what she said?, Shweta asked the other girls and the other girls nodded.

Shweta dragged Khushi and made her sit beside her. Rati and Dhruva crowded around them.

Shweta started, "Look how handsome he is!

Rati continued, "Isn't he hot?

Dhruva sighed dreamily, "Oh the things I could do with him!

Khushi just frowned confusedly, "What hot? What handsome? He intimidates me! He is so scary! I still remember the time he glared at me just because I entered his study without knocking!

"Wait!, Shweta's eyes widened, "Does that mean you know him? As in personally know him?

Khushi shrugged, "Haan! He is my dad's boss! And we live in the outhouse of his estate. Infact, I used to see him almost everyday!

Rati's eyes turned huge too, "Girl! You got to see ASR daily?

Rati and Dhruva shouted simultaneously, "How lucky!

Khushi huffed, "What lucky? He scares me! I would rather avoid him if I can! That walk of his, whenever it comes towards me, all I can feel is that my doom is walking towards me. And his glare, oh dear, so scary! I think it could burn a hole on a wall if he glares enough! And...

"We get it!, Shweta cut her off, annoyed at her badmouthing one of the top bosses of business world. Shweta was inspired by him and didn't like it when anybody didn't appreciate him. It didn't help that she had a bit of crush on him too. Khushi shrugged and walked off to her cupboard to get her night clothes. The other three girls continued.

Dhruva shook her head, "What a girl! You get to be near ASR, and you don't appreciate it at all!

"I know right?, Rati shook her head too, "You don't know what you are missing! Look at his jaw line!

"And his smouldering eyes..., muttered Dhruva.

"And his broad shoulders..., sighed Shweta.

"I wonder if he has six pack abs underneath that shirt and vest!, Rati mused.

"He has!, Khushi spoke up, as she searched for her night dress, "Saw it once when he was exercising shirtless!

Khushi found her dress and walked off to the bathroom to change. The other three girls stared at her stunned and then sighed.

"Does she even know how lucky she is?, Shweta asked.

The other two shook their head. Shweta walked away and the other two looked in Khushi's direction puzzled.

"If she has ASR, why is she drooling after the other guy?, asked Rati puzzled.

Dhruva shrugged, "God knows!

Khushi came out of the bathroom and headed to her bed. She frowned as Dhruva and Rati continued to drool over ASR's photo. Khushi was confused. Why were they so gaga over him? Looks are not everything, are they? Charming personality is also important, right? Like my Aakash! Khushi smiled dreamily. Yes! Looks are of no use when you have rubbish personality. I mean ASR is so intimidating and boring and serious! Nope I like Aakash better, charming, sweet and easy going!

Another month passed and another incident happened that changed Khushi's perspective towards life. A girl from their hostel fell sick. She was a young single girl of Khushi's age and her falling sick had all the girls gossiping in the hostel. Khushi didn't know what was the case. But she was so busy with her studies that she forgot to ask about it. Then one day she came to know that the girl's parents had come to take her away. That's when Khushi asked Rati what was wrong. Khushi, Rati and Dhruva were watching from their floor's window as the girl was led away by her mom into their car as the father hauled the girl's bags to put them in the car's trunk. The girl's friends were helping him out.

"Oh! The poor girl was pregnant! Her parents took her home!, Rati answered.

"What will happen now to her?, Dhruva asked.

It was Nandini who replied, "What will happen? Abortion! She was looking at the girl with solemn look. She shook her head and walked away to their room.

Dhruva and Rati turned to walk to their room and Khushi followed.

Rati spoke to Nandini, "But isn't abortion illegal?

Nandini gave Rati a harsh look, "Legal or illegal? Does it matter? Her life is ruined by this incident! And once the child is born, our society will eat her alive. Better to abort than ruin her life even more!

Dhruva sat on her bed feeling sad, "This is wrong. What is the fault of the child that he was born to an unwed mother?

Nandini was not impressed, "The girl should have thought of that before being so careless.

Warning: the views mentioned above are not mine. Please don't flame me. This is how the characters think!)

Nandini stalked out of the room with her things. It was time to get to work for her.

Behind her Dhruva and Rati sat there thinking about the poor girl and the situation she was facing.

And that's when Khushi asked her question, "But how can she be pregnant? She is not married, right? And one can get pregnant only after marriage, right?

Dhruva and Rati whipped their head around and stared at Khushi with wide eyes.

"Oh no!, Rati moaned, "Nobody told her about birds and bees?

"Apparently, no!, retorted Dhruva.

"Now what?, asked Rati.

"We cannot do it!, Dhruva looked wide eyed at Rati.

Of course not!, Rati gasped out.

"Then who?, Dhruva wondered.

"Nandini?, suggested Rati.

"No way! Dhruva shook her head, "God knows what rubbish she will fill in Khushi's head! The poor girl would be traumatised!

"Matron?, suggested Rati but then both girls cringed, "NO!

Finally Dhruva gave the answer, "Shweta would be the best!

In the evening, when Shweta arrived from work, she was accosted by two young girls who begged her to tell Khushi about birds and bees. Shweta turned pale after hearing the idea but when the girls explained why and also how Khushi had no female in her life other than them to explain it, Shweta agreed. That night Khushi got the knowledge of something, that normally her mother would have given her if she was alive. Next day was spent by Khushi remaining pink faced and not looking into anyone in their eyes. It took a while to get normal and yet still she maintained her childlike innocence. She still believed that Aakash took the girls to the greenhouse to just talk to them and find if the girl was right for him. Poor Khushi! She still didn't make the connection!

The months passed and it was the Valentine's Day. But unlike last year, Khushi was not sad. She was chirpy, happy and eager to celebrate the day with her friends. It also helped that Tanya was single along with Dhruva and all three decided to go on shopping splurge and give Khushi a makeover. Khushi's simple salwar kameezes were replaced with stylish ones. Her long choti was exchanged for a sexy cut. Her friends even made her buy some western outfits like dresses and skirts. She was taught some natural make up looks and how to pair her clothes with accessories. This did not mean Khushi had changed. She was still the same girl, who dressed in a simple manner and was nave. But she was not anymore the sheltered girl of Shantivan's outhouse. This was the girl who had seen the modern world and could embrace it. Her naivety and innocence remained but along with it came grace, style and maturity. She was no more the 18 year old simpleton of Dilli. She was now the mature girl of 20 year old on the cusp of womanhood.

Something else happened that Valentine's Day. Khushi was proposed by Rahul, her friend. This shocked her and confused her. She didn't know the boy had hots for her. Khushi managed to reject him gently by letting him know she didn't feel the same way about him. Rahul was ok with it but the whole year he tried his level best to impress her hoping she would change her mind. Even though Rahul was sweet and at some point she did wonder how it would be to date such a sweet guy, fact remained that she was from Dilli, her father was in Dilli and she didn't want to stay away from him while staying in Mumbai just for dating or date someone for few weeks and then leave for her hometown. So she kept on saying no to him. But that didn't stop Rahul and both had some fun times. Many times Khushi wished Rahul was from Dilli so that they could actually have a relationship. The boy was so sweet and fun that Khushi badly wanted to try.

Khushi didn't even notice when Aakash's photo got transferred from the drawer of her bed side table to the bottom of her suitcase along with some old dresses of hers that she had stopped wearing anymore.

And with that, another chapter comes to end!

Next chapter, back to Dilli with Aakash and Arnav meeting the new Khushi!

What will happen next? Will either of them recognise Khushi?

Will Khushi ignore Aakash, now that she is over her crush?

Will Arnav fall for Khushi the moment he sees her?

Will Khushi go gaga over Arnav the way her friends went over his pic?

So many questions but no answers till the next month!

See you next month!

Thanks, take care and have fun,

Kalpana
