Yes! Eventually!
You know, one thing I love about FFs etc is that, unlike serials, here we know that the essence of the character would be maintained and there won't be any character assassination. Plus, the sad part doesn't last long. XP

Thank you for so many beautiful write ups! 🤗

Chapter 57 - Adding Insult to Injury

"I see you've brought the entire clan," a stern faced Maya walked up to the Maans.

"Na...Namaste Maya Bhabi," Meher gave her sister-in-law a cautious smile.

"Oh my Rabs...this is the Bhabi?" cried Kuljeet. In an instant, she was at Maya's side. "So young and beautiful, surely there must me something in the water in this house."

Maya ignored Kuljeet and addressed Meher directly. "We were already having a lousy start to our day, then you showed up. You know what? I'm genuinely surprised you had the nerve to do so even after everything that's happened because of you."

"Because of me?" Meher was confused. "I don't know what you're talking about Maya Bhabi. I just came see if everything was okay. Uh...what I mean is...I left my phone behind in Preet's car. We haven't been in touch so..."

"So you have no idea about the mess you've created?" asked Maya.

"Mess?" Meher shook her head. "Preet hasn't called me. Is Prem Bhaiya okay?"

"That is none of your business," Maya glared at her. "You don't belong here Meher, so take your little brood and leave."

"Leave? Oh my Rabs! Why should she leave?" cried Kuljeet. "This is her home now."

"Her home?" scoffed Maya. "And just how did you arrive at that conclusion?" She turned back to Meher with narrowing eyes. "No one wants you here, and the sooner you leave the better. Even Preet had the good sense to dump you. But did you take the hint? No!"

"Dump me? No," Meher shook her head. "I think there's been some sort of a misunderstanding..."

"It's you who doesn't understand Meher," said Maya. She was interrupted by the sounds of little girls squealing in delight.

"Meher Chachee, I missed you!" grinned Chahat as she and Tanu ran into the foyer and hugged Meher.

"Me too!" added Tanu.

Meher glanced worriedly at Maya. Something was terribly wrong. Why was Maya behaving so rudely with her and her family? She shook her head to clear her thoughts, then bent down to return the children's hug. "Girls, how are you?" she smiled.

"We're good Mamee," said Tanu.

"Ahem," Kuljeet cleared her throat. "Meher aren't you going to introduce us to little Chuchu here."

"It's Chahat," Tanu corrected her. "And I'm her cousin Tanu."

"Girls, where did you run off to? I...Meher?" Kulraj joined the others. "What a wonderful surprise!" She gave Meher a warm hug. "How are you?"

"I'm fine Kulraj Didi," Meher gave her a small smile.

"You're more than fine, you're absolutely glowing. Married life must really agree with you," grinned Kulraj. "But really Meher, running off and getting married like that. Not fair."

"Woh...it just sort of happened," blushed Meher.

"Hmm, and I'm sure it was all Preet's idea." Kulraj raised her hand. "Na-huh, don't try to defend him. Just wait until he gets back, I'll be sure to twist his ears. I mean, he was the last of the Junejas to get married...koi party sharty to banti hai boss (there should have been a grand celebration).

"I couldn't agree with you more my dear," smiled Kuljeet.

"Uh...Kulraj Didi," said Meher as she motioned to towards Balraj and Kuljeet. "These are my parents.:

"Ooo and look what I have in my bag, chocolates!" smiled Kuljeet. She handed the bars to Chahat and Tanu.

"Thank you," the girls smiled politely.

"Do you have any more?" asked Tanu. "I have 2 brothers, you know."

"Tanu! Really? Where are your manners?" cried Kulraj. "Maya, why haven't you invited Meher and her family in?"

"Kulraj Didi, I don't think that's a good idea...," tried Maya.

"Ah yes! I completely agree," nodded Kulraj. "I'm sorry Meher, we can't let you into the house. Not without doing your griha pravesh first. Just give me a second."

Maya slapped her forehead in frustration, as Kulraj walked off to get a pooja thal. Leave it to Kulraj Didi to turn everything into a daily soap. Wait until Bauji finds out. This Kabhi Khushi will turn in to Kabhi Gham really fast.

Moments later...

Balraj and Kuljeet smiled at each other as Kulraj performed aarti and applied a tilak to Meher's forehead. Meher then tipped the small kalash (pot) with her foot and entered the Juneja mansion again.

"I'm sorry the entire family isn't here to welcome you," Kulraj gave Meher a warm hug. "But the girls and I will have to do for now."

"Kulraj Didi...Bauji...," said Maya.

"Yes yes, I'll let Bauji know they're here," Kulraj interrupted her. She motioned towards a servant and asked him to prepare tea for their guests. Then she and the girls led the Maans to a nearby living room.

"Don't say I didn't warn you?" Maya mumbled under her breath as she shook her head and followed them.

A short while later...

"Meher Chachee? I like calling you Meher Chachee," grinned Chahat.

"And I like hearing you call me that," Meher smiled and tweaked the little girl's cheeks.

"Have you finally come to live with us?" asked Chahat. "Preet Chachu said you'd come later."

"It is later silly," reasoned Tanu. "So of course she's come to live here."

"But she doesn't have her suitcase," argued Chahat.

"Maybe Mamu will buy her new clothes," suggested Tanu. "Come on, we'll take you to Mamu's room."

"It's a mess, but you can clean it later," giggled Chahat. "You have to play Barbie with us first."

"Uff-ho girls!" cried Kulraj. "You're going to drive your aunt away on her first day here."

"Oh not at all," smiled Kuljeet. "Meher loves children, don't you Meher?"

"Maya!" Lalit's voice suddenly roared behind her. "What the hell is going on here?! A servant just told me..." His eyes met Meher's as he walked into the room. "Who?! Who let these people into my house?!"

"I...uh...I asked them to leave," explained Maya. "But Kulraj Didi decided to serve up some tea."

"Uh...Bauji...," Kulraj was surprised at her father's behavior. "Perhaps the servant didn't give you the correct message. It's not just anybody...it's Meher. She's come home. Did Preet call you? In any case, isn't it a nice surprise?" Her father glared at her in silence. "Uh...we were just having some tea. Shall I make you a cup?"

"Heh-heh, namaste Prahji," Kuljeet put on her best smile. She took Balraj by the hand and hurried towards Lalit. "Myself Mrs. Kuljeet Maan. This is Balraj. We're your samdhis (in-laws). Uh...Meher's parents ji. Uh...Meher...Preet's wife."

Lalit ignored her and walked up to Meher.

"Namaste Papa...Bau...s-s-sir," stammered Meher.

"Don't bother," Lalit waved her away, as she stood up and tried to touch his feet. "Tum yahan kyun ayi ho, ye main jan-na nahin chahta (I'm not interested in knowing why you've come here). What I do want to make sure is that you leave. Main tumhara manhoos saya bhi is parivaar pe padne nahin dena chahta (I won't allow you to cast your unlucky shadow on this family)!"

"Bauji?! Is this anyway to talk?" cried Kulraj.

"I've told you before Kulraj!" said Lalit. "This is my house, and I'll speak as I please! If you don't like it, you can go to your room!"

"Mommy, why is Nanu so angry with Meher Maami?" Tanu whispered into her mother's ear.

"I don't know sweetie," Kulraj whispered back. "But I want you to do me a favor and take Chahat upstairs."

"But mommy...," tried Tanu.

"Tanu please," sighed Kulraj. "Go upstairs, and don't come down until I tell you." Her daughter nodded, took Chahat by the hand and led her away.

"Excuse me sir," Balraj spoke up. "With all due respect, has my daughter done anything wrong?"

"Wrong? Really!" cried Lalit. "You little people show your real selves every time...parasites."

"Parasites? Did you hear that Balraj?" exclaimed Kuljeet. "He called us parasites!"

"Well, isn't that what you are?" said Maya. "You people were always looking for an excuse to squeeze into our family. You finally managed to do so, but sucked the life blood out of us in the process."

"What are you talking about Maya?" cried Kulraj.

"Maya beta, you're mistaken," tried Balraj. "Our Meher never...Preet wanted to marry Meher. He promised me he would take care of her...keep her happy."

"Hmph! And you believed him?" scoffed Lalit. "Rishta barabar ke logon main hota hai (relationships are established between equals). Tum mere ek mamooli hotel ke ek mamooli se manager ho (you're simply the manager of one of my little hotels). Mere ghar ke naukar sabzi kharednai tumhari gadi se behtar gadi mein jate hain (my servants shop for groceries in a car better than the one you drive). You and I belong to two different worlds. Tumhari beti kis tarah meri bahu ban sakti hai (how can your daughter become my daughter-in-law)? And you..." He glared angrily at Meher. "Even after everything I said to you, you still went ahead and married my son? But then again why should I have expected any different. You were only doing your parents bidding weren't you?"

"Excuse me?" Meher looked up in surprise as Lalit addressed her father again.

"You purposely asked my son to stay in your house," stated Lalit. "It was all part of your larger plan to trap him and be seduced by your daughter."

"No no sir, I never...," tried Balraj.

"Fathers normally bend over backwards for their children," continued Lalit. He poked a finger accusingly into Balraj's chest. "But you...you used your daughter as a stepping stone to get ahead...to get into our family. Shame on you Balraj! Shame on you!"

"Mr. Juneja!" cried Meher.

"Awaz neeche (Keep your voice down)! exclaimed Lalit. "You people destroyed everything I worked so hard to build all these years. You're lucky I don't have you thrown in jail!"

"What are you talking about Bauji?" cried Kulraj.

"Breaking news Kulraj Didi! Juneja Enterprises is filing for bankruptcy!" Maya waved her hands in the air dramatically. "And it's all her fault." She pointed at Meher. "She knew Preet was going to marry Ash, but she snared him anyway. The Rampals pulled out their support in retaliation, and so have 80% of all our other investors. We going to lose everything. The jokes on you Meher! Your "prince charming" turned out to be a pauper."

"I knew it!" cried Kuljeet. "I knew it was too good to be true. We should have believed Daljeet when she showed us the pregnancy report and the pictures of Preet and Ash together in London." She pulled out some papers and photos from her purse and shoved them in Lalit's hands. "Really Prah-ji, this is not done! Your son used our daughter, then tossed her away like a rag. It is we who should file a complaint against you!"

Lalit looked at the pictures before handing them to Maya. She and Kulraj looked through them anxiously. "So, I was right." Meher fought back tears as Lalit smiled smugly at her. "You were nothing but a mere distraction for my son. I suppose you people are looking for some sort of compensation now. Fine." He took out his checkbook and looked at Meher. "How much, you gold digger?"

"Mr. Juneja!" cried Balraj. "You've insulted us quite enough! And I will not have you insult my daughter like that! My daughter is my pride and joy."

"Well then, take your pride and joy and get the hell out of my house!" replied Lalit.

"Bauji please!" cried Kulraj.

"What do you think we're running here...some shelter for wayfair girls?" continued Lalit. "Get lost! Leave, before I have the guards sent and throw you out!"

Later...

Herman walked into the living room holding a file in his hand. He found his wife sipping tea while Kulraj sat holding her head in her hands. "Hey, was that Meher I just saw leaving?"

"Ah! Herman, where have you been? You missed one hell of a show," chuckled Maya.

"Show? What show?" asked Herman.

"Herman, something terrible happened," sighed Kulraj. "Poor Meher. Poor Preet. God knows how he'll react when he finds out." Herman's face grew pale as she told him everything that had just transpired. "I've never seen Bauji so upset before."

"Upset? Now that's an understatement," said Maya.

"You think this is funny?" frowned Herman.

"Well isn't it?" asked Maya. "Those people got exactly what was coming to them. We're in a hole because Preet married Meher instead of Ash, and now Ash is pregnant with his baby."

"What?!" cried Herman. Preet had mentioned that Ashlesha was in London, but she was pregnant...with his child? That was a detail he seemed to have left out. "Wait a minute Maya, who told you this?"

"Mrs. Maan," said Maya. "She had photos and pregnancy reports. Apparently Daljeet Rampal gave them to her."

"I still can't believe Preet would do something so awful to Meher," Kulraj shook her head.

"He didn't," said Herman. He was about to say something else, when he saw his father passing by in the hall outside the room. "Bauji," he called out. Maya and Kulraj followed after him. "Bauji, we need to talk."

"Not now Herman," Lalit said gruffly. "I've heard enough bad news from you for one day."

"Bauji aap ne Meher ke saat acha nahin kiya (You've wronged Meher), said Herman.

"Oh, toh ab tum uska case lado ge (Oh, so now you've decided to take up her case)?" frowned Lalit. "Well, I'm not interested. I have to get in touch with the Rampals. Unwittingly the Maans let drop the fact that Ashlesha is pregnant, and she's with Preet in London. Preet may be an idiot, but he may have finally done something right. His marriage to Ashlesha can finally get back on track. Rishap will have to agree considering there is a baby on the way. We can save our company."

"No Bauji, it's all a set up," said Herman. "The Rampals are trying to make a fool out of us again, like they've been doing for so long."

"What are you talking about?" demanded Lalit.

"It all started with Preet noticing how closely they were outbidding us for contracts, sometimes by just a few rupees," explained Herman. Lalit, Kulraj and Maya's eyes grew wide as they listened to Herman lay out the extent of the Rampals' fraud, including their planting an inside man in Juneja Enterprises, and the ponzi scheme they had been fooling their investors with for so long.

"Unbelievable! And they wanted to take over our company!" cried Lalit. "They should be charged at once!"

"Yes," nodded Herman. "I'll be leaving for the court house shortly to file a case against them. Preet is going to do the same in London where they're headquartered, first thing in the morning over there."

"This is awful," Maya bit her lower lip nervously. "To think, that woman conned me into bringing a proposal for Preet into this house."

"And that's why I warned you not to get involved with her, when you were on the phone with her this morning," said Herman.

"You were on the phone with Daljeet?" asked Kulraj. "Why?"

"Uh...she...uh...tried to feed me the same garbage about Preet and Ash's marriage...but I made it clear to her that...it's...uh...not happening," stammered Maya.

"Oh God, poor Meher. I feel terrible about how she was treated. Herman, do you have her phone number by any chance?" asked Kulraj. "We should call the Maans and apologize. Quick, before Preet finds out and all hell breaks loose."

"Right," agreed Herman.

"No one will do any apologizing," said Lalit.

"But Bauji," said Kulraj. "You heard what Herman just said. It was the Rampals that were trying to hurt us..."

"And who are the Maans?" countered Lalit. "Mrs. Maan is Daljeet's very own sister."

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking Bauji?" asked Maya. "Both families were working together to conspire against us!"

"Exactly!" agreed Lalit.

"Bauji please, I don't think...," tried Herman. Before he could complete his sentence, a sudden commotion erupted. The family raced to the entrance of their house and were surprised to find their servants trying to hold off a small hoard of press reporters."

"What the hell is going on here?! roared Lalit. "Who let these people in?"

Upon seeing the family, the group of reporters pushed ahead and forced their way in. The Junejas were suddenly surrounded by flashing camera lights, mikes being thrust in front of their faces, and a bombardment of questions.

"Sir, we have credible information that Prem Juneja has been in a near fatal accident in London. Can you provide us with an update on his condition?"

"Sir, we heard he's on life support."

"Sir, word has it that you were trying to conceal this fact from your investors. Is this true? Do you expect your stocks to take another big hit?"

"Sir, will the lack of Prem Junejas leadership at this crucial stage be the end of Juneja Enterprises?"

"Sir, is Juneja Enterprises headed for bankruptcy? Sir..."

"Enough!" roared Lalit. "Get out! Get out all of you! Herman, get me the police commissioner. I'll have all of you arrested for trespassing on private property!" He glared at the reporters as additional guards rushed in and pushed the reporters out the door.

"Sir, you can't treat the press this way," argued the reporters. "Sir, the public has the right to know..."

A short while later...

Herman watched his father pace the living room, while Maya and Kulraj sat worriedly on the sofa. He had to think fast. There had to be some way to turn this mess around.

"This was the last thing we needed," sighed Maya. "If the investors get word of Prem Jiju's accident..."

"I...I can't believe this," stammered Kuljeet. "That reporter said Prem was on life support."

"He was lying Kulraj Didi," Herman reassured her. "I spoke to Preet earlier. He said Prem Bhaiya was fine. They'll be home by the end of the week, you'll see."

"What are you doing?" asked Lalit, as he watched Herman take out his phone.

"Trying to see if we can turn the tables a bit." Herman turned his attention to his call. "Yes. Hi, Junaid? This is Herman. Herman Juneja. A bunch of reporters showed up on our door, and some of them were from your paper. Listen yaar, my family could really use a break right now. No yaar, it's all lies. Prem Bhaiya and Preet are in London, but it's on business. Yes, there was a minor accident, but nothing to make headlines about. If you really want a headline, I'll give you one. We have evidence that the owners of Rampal Industries were running a ponzi scheme. Yes, exactly. My brothers are in London to file charges against them, and I'm on my way to the court house right now to do the same thing. If you want to meet me there in an hour, I'll be happy to give you all the details. You'll have the real scoop before everyone else. Great! Wait...what? Really? Are you sure? Yeah, they were all probably in it together. Okay yaar...I'll see you..." Herman's face grew pale as he ended his call.

"What's wrong?" asked Maya. "What did Junaid say?"

Herman took a deep breath before continuing. "He said the person who tipped them off about Prem Bhaiya's accident was Kuljeet Maan."

The next day...

Meher sat quietly on a chair in her parents' living room staring into space. Balraj folded his paper and looked over at his daughter. She had barely spoken 2 words since their return from Delhi. She hadn't eaten anything either. He couldn't bare to see her like this. How he wished he could do something to make things right for her. Anything at all. Preet. He had faith in his son-in-law. He was sure if he could some how make contact with him, he would set things right.

"Ahem," Balraj cleared his throat, but Meher didn't move. "Uh...Kuljeet, are you going to serve breakfast this morning or not?"

"I will if that damned milkman shows up today," complained Kuljeet She burst into the dining area holding a tray of breakfast items and placed it on the table. "Oh my Rabs! It seems like I've been confined to that kitchen for ever." She looked at Meher and frowned. "Oh maharani (queen)! Aaj ungli uttha ne ka faisla kareingi ya nahin (will you bother to lift a finger today or not)?"

"Kuljeet, leave her alone for God's sake," sighed Balraj.

"Why, huhn? Why?" demanded Kuljeet. "If she's going to sit on our heads then she better do her share of the work round here." Just then the doorbell rang. "Ack! It must be the milkman. Just wait until I give him a piece of my mind!" She walked to the front door and opened it, and was surprised to find Sam and Guarav standing here.

"Good morning Auntie Ji," smiled Sam. "I hope you don't mind us showing up unannounced. Gaurav and I were passing through town on our way back home and thought we'd stop by and say hello. Uh...how is Meher? I've been trying to reach her on her phone, but she isn't answering. Have you heard from her?"

Kuljeet threw the door wide open. "Hmph! Why don't you ask her yourself?"

Sam and Gaurav entered the home, and were surprised to find Meher there.

"Meher?" said Sam, as she walked over to her. "What a wonderful surprise! Now this is why I say we're soul-sisters. We not only got married on the same day, we both came back from our honeymoon on the same day too."

"Oh Sam," whispered Meher. She hugged her best friend tightly and burst out in tears.

"Um...is everything alright?" Gaurav asked worriedly as he looked around the room. "Where's Preet?"

"Meher will you please tell me what's wrong?" asked Sam.

"Apne moon pe kalik mal ke ayi hai aur saat saat hamare bhi (she's disgraced herself and us)!" cried Kuljeet.

"Kuljeet please!" pleaded Balraj. "Bas karo (it's enough)."

"Well it's the truth!" cried Kuljjet. She went on to detail everything that Daljeet had told them, and what had subsequently transpired between them and Lalit Juneja. "Oh my Rabs Sam! It was the most God awful thing I've ever been through in my entire life! You should have heard them. The things they were saying."

Sam rolled her eyes. Leave it to the wicked witch to make everything about herself.

"Meher...old Hitler Juneja can be pretty crass at time," sighed Gaurav. "I've known Preet since we were in diapers, and I've very rarely heard him say a kind word to him, or me even. That's just the way he's always been and he's become worse ever since Mrs. Juneja died. You have to shrug it off."

"What I can't believe is that you actually believed anything that Daljeet Rampal told you," said Sam.

"But Sam, she had pictures and a pregnancy report," Kuljeet pointed out.

"All fake," said Sam. "Ash's boyfriend Sameer is the father of that baby."

"Boyfriend? How do you know that?" Meher asked in surprise.

"Remember when we were at the wedding venue and I went to the pharmacy to get some ointment for your hand?" said Sam. "Preet and Ash had gotten into a car accident and were at the hospital near by. I was there when the doctor told us Ash was pregnant. Preet was as surprised to hear about it as I was. We confronted Ash about it and she told us everything."

"So you knew about it all this time," muttered Meher. "Why didn't Preet tell me?"

"He sort of made a deal with Ash," said Sam. "He wouldn't say anything about her pregnancy and she would tell him about her parents' real motive behind their marriage arrangement."

"But I'm his wife!" cried Meher. "And...and...he lied to me about his father approving our marriage!"

"Meher you were about to marry Viren," Gaurav reminded her. "At that point, we were all desperately doing whatever it took to stop you."

"And now he's dumped her," said Kuljeet. "Used her and dumped her."

"Kuljeet!"" cried Balraj.

"Mrs. Maan, with all due respect, said Gaurav. "Preet loves Meher. He would never do anything to hurt her."

"You would say that, wouldn't you?" scoffed Kuljeet. "After all, you're his best friend. I'm telling you Sam...you better stay on your guard. You never know when this one will turn around and do the same to you."

"What?!" cried Sam.

"You made the same mistake Meher did and got married at the spur of the moment. That too to Preet's best friend," Kuljeet shook her head disapprovingly at Gaurav. "These young men are birds of a feather. They can't be trusted!"

"Enough Kuljeet!" cried Balraj. He rubbed his hand over the left side of his chest. "Don't project our problems onto Sam and Gaurav."

"Why huhn? Why enough?!" Kuljeet shot back. "We were wronged by those awful Junejas. I'll not rest until the entire world knows what they are really like."

"For God's sake Kuljeet," pleaded Balraj. "Think of Meher."

"I am thinking of Meher," said Kuljeet. "I'm thinking how we'll have to support her for the rest of our lives!"

"My daughter is not a burden for me," replied Balraj.

"Oh really!" cried Kuljeet. "I'll see how you feel about her once everyone finds out how her husband dumped her on our doorstep like a used rag."

"Kuljeet!" cried Balraj. Beads of perspiration began to form on his forehead. Just then the doorbell rang. Balraj took a deep breath and headed for the door. Outside stood a courier with an envelope in his hand. Balraj signed for the letter.

Meher noticed the color drain from his face as he quietly read the letter. "What is it Papa-ji?" she asked.

"It's...it's a termination letter from Juneja enterprises," stammered Balraj.

"What?" cried Kuljeet.

"We have to vacate the premises immediately to make way for the new manager to take up residence here," muttered Balraj, as the letter slipped from his hand and fell to the floor.

"Oh my Rabs!" cried Kuljeet. "As if humiliating us wasn't enough, they've gone and snatched the very morsel from our mouths. Where will we go? What will we do? You know this is all your fault Balraj. It's your fault for trusting Preet Juneja. It's your fault for letting your daughter get married to him. It's your fault that you couldn't save your family's dignity and stand up to Lalit Juneja. You're a weak man Balraj! A weak weak man!"

Balraj was about to say something but instead he clutched his chest and let out a painful grunt. Red faced, he collapsed on the floor.

"Papa-ji!" cried Meher, as she rushed to her father's side. Kuljeet looked on stunned as she picked up his head and laid it in her lap, took his hand in hers and began to rub it. "Papa-ji?! Please...someone call the doctor!"

Whoa!
So many things happened at once!!

I was really angry at Lalit Juneja and those who ganged up against Meher.
The interaction between Meher, Chahat, Tanu and Kulraj was really really adorable!
(I guess, there's a typo in their conversation, Kulraj and Kuljeet k beech mein)

I'm eagarea waiting for Preet!!!!

Also, I'm glad that Meher has Sam!

P.S. - Reserved, coz I'll type more but this is the brief version!
Thank you for the update!!!!!!
