Chapter 33:
"Stop!
Hamid was already dead when his voice entered inside his eardrum. Who would know that Bairam Khan himself will wait for them in the stable?
"H...Hu...Huzur... A trembling Hamid get down from his horse and bowed down in front of the Wazir-E-Ala. Bairam Khan scanned him from head to toe and frowned.
"Where did you go? He asked in a cold tone.
"H...H...his M..mm... Majesty had ordered me to... to accompany him to... to...
"Carry on... I am listening. There was no change in Bairam Khan's temper.
"O...uum...Actually... Hamid stammered badly. The emperor himself had ordered him to not to leak anything to anyone. But how he will convince Bairam Khan? Every one of the empire knows how much cruel this commander is; the previous chief bodyguard Abdul is carrying the sign of his wrath in his body forever, and his crime' was just as same as Hamid's. Now maybe Abdul has faced a great career uplift for the punishment, but he has lost a whole leg! Hamid does not want any type of promotion at the cost of his leg... But how can he disobey the emperor's order?
"Tell fast... Bairam Khan repeated.
"A...ac...actually...
"You can go Hamid. Do report at grand conference hall tomorrow noon. Good night.
Hamid got heaven in his hand with the assuring voice of the emperor from behind. He bowed down in gratitude and respect and almost ran away.
Bairam Khan turned. Jalal was behind him. He was keeping his horse at its special place, so Bairam Khan did not see him while talking with Hamid. Now he could see his face clearer when he came closer near to the torch. He was a bit shocked. Never did he see Jalal being so agonized, enraged and desperate together!
"Everything's alright, Jalal? He asked worriedly.
"How can you expect everything to be alright, Khan-E-Khana, when the Wazir-E-Ala himself is seen to spy on the emperor's each and every act and to interrogate and blackmail the personal bodyguard of the emperor to break emperor's order of securing confidentiality?
Though nowadays this particular tone of Jalal is not unknown to Bairam Khan anymore, still he got stunned. Jalal was looking straight at his eyes, his orbs glowing in a suppressed fire of rage.
"Have you forgotten how you should talk to your Khan Baba? Bairam Khan uttered with a little resentment. "What do you mean by breaking confidentiality? Telling me about your whereabouts is similar to breaking confidentiality to you?
"Well, when you have to get the news by poking a bodyguard instead of asking me; then always there is a scope of doubt. Jalal told without any touch of excitement in his voice. "You already know where I went, Khan Baba... You just wanted to verify through Hamid...
"Yes. Bairam Khan confessed. "I know that you had gone to Vrindavan; you had gone there to meet a certain Hindu woman who is believed as a saint by those idiots and all... I am surprised to see! How can you overlook your duties like this?
"I am very much aware of my duties, Khan Baba. Jalal told in an icy voice. "Things would be better if you were a little more caring about the bounds and limits of your duties. Fitting spies behind the emperor is certain not a duty coming under the scope of any responsible officer!
Bairam Khan's face distorted with the jolt of the hidden humiliation of his words. He took a long breath. "Why did you go Vrindavan? He asked.
"I had some private work. Jalal told in a stern voice.
"And may I know what that was? Bairam Khan questioned back.
"No. Jalal looked at him. "If I had to discuss about my private life and private works with everybody, I would not have gone in a disguise. I would rather call a meeting and declare about my trip in front of all!
Bairam Khan looked a bit worried. He never has seen Jalal being so insensibly rude. Certainly there is some reason behind his rage.
"Okay, go... He sighed. "We can talk later about it.
"If you want to hear something more kindly proceed! I have no interest in stretching such a bogus discussion till tomorrow only to satisfy your curiosity.
Bairam Khan could not control his patience anymore. "What do you mean by my curiosity? What I am doing is all for the good of my empire!
"If you think questioning the emperor about his private work at midnight in a stable is meant for the good for the empire then sorry, I do not agree. Anyways, continue!
"I am sorry to say that I am very unsure about your sense of good and bad in politics, Jalal. Bairam Khan gritted. "Do you have any idea what might be the reaction of your action in the religious community? Being a Muslim emperor, you are visiting a bloody temple and a bunch of fraud so-called saints; do you know how much great offence is this?
"I am not only a Muslim emperor, Khan Baba. I am the emperor of Hindustan. And my empire consists of those temples and saints and their countless number of devotees as well. Jalal told in a low yet strong voice. "Tell that religious community, Khan Baba, that I am very much aware of an emperor's duty and offences. They do not need to teach me.
It was indirectly a target to Bairam Khan only. He got irritated again. "What do you think Jalal, you understand everything? You are still an inexperienced boy, Jalal... you don't know...
"That's why I want to gather experience. Jalal's voice was dry. "I know how to develop myself.
"How much do you know about yourself? Bairam Khan blurted out impatiently. "I have gone through all the steps of your development; I have seen you to grow up and... Strangely, his voice trembled. "I just can't help myself to get attached with your every action that's all! After training you from your childhood, taking care of you and this empire I am completely attached with everything from the root! What to do!
"There is a difference between taking care and fitting spy, Khan Baba... Jalal's voice was softer this time. "Don't repeat such mean things again; please! This is my land, this is my palace. I can go anywhere I want whenever I want. By appointing a third person behind me you are proving it to that particular man that I am not the owner of my wish and that is like an insult to me!
Mean things! Insult!' Is Bairam Khan's ears are working well, or he has become deaf?
"What do you mean? Do you think I sent spies behind you in order to penetrate your privacy? He uttered in a resentful voice. "I just wanted to know if you are alright, safe and secured.
"I know how to keep myself safe Khan Baba.
"Maybe! Bairam Khan sighed in a strange despair. "But what to do! Still I cannot stop myself from being concerned about your safety. I cannot get asleep before I get to know you have returned safely. I cannot help from appointing someone who will take care of your safety. I cannot stop myself from roaming around the stable waiting for your coming back! His voice trembled again. "How I can be assured, tell me! I remember the last time you went secretly at that desert land and came back after hurting yourself badly. I know you love to play with danger; but who will be there to protect you if that danger starts defeating you? I will always be there... no matter you approve or not! No matter how much you think it a overdoing; no matter that I am nothing more than a responsible officer to the empire and the emperor... I will not stop being concerned about you!
Jalal could not tell anything for a moment. He suddenly felt Bairam Khan's words have given a slight jolt in the root of the emotions for his Khan Baba which had been buried under a lot of external adversities... The string of love and respect which was lost in the continuous conflicts and disagreements, became slight prominent in his heart for a while...
"Anyways... Good Night Jalal! Bairam Khan controlled himself at the same time. He proceeded to go back. Jalal stared at the shadow of the long and strong-built physic of the man getting mingled with the darkness. He first thought to call him back and say sorry for hurting him... How he can deny the strong pull of affection and protectiveness of this man who is more than his father to him? Is the load of crown heavier that the affection of a father?
But alas! He could not... The distance was too long.
Three days have passed. The temperature is not getting down!
The royal physician was checking the pulse of the patient from outside of the curtain. He was not looking much hopeful. It was third day when she is still unconscious in fever, sometimes dizzy, sometime delirious, but he is not able to detect the real reason behind this sudden illness. It is said that the sign of the decease is first reflected on the face; but his patient is a respected royal woman, and he cannot see her by rule. He has to rely on the half-hearted treatment from outside of the curtain and the information he is getting from the nurses. And based on that, he has not got any type of physical deterioration being the reason of the suffering. He sighed hiding his worry under the practicality of his experienced eyes.
"Did you ever try to understand what is she murmuring in delirium?
"She often says that she is a prisoner. And she tries to send someone back... and many things which we cannot fathom, Vaidya-Ji. A nurse told.
"What has happened to her, Vaidya-Ji? The queen asked humbly while caressing her daughter's hairs sitting beside her.
"It's tough to detect. The physician inferred in a professional voice. "I don't think it is anything related to her physical health.
"What do you mean, Vaidya-Ji?
"Mind is much more important than physical health, you know? The royal physician smiled slightly. "She is bearing a terrible stress on her mind and her nerves from a long time. So far I suppose that the reason of this high temperature is that stress only.
"How to cure her then, Vaidya Ji? The king of Amer uttered helplessly.
"I sincerely hope this medicine will work. The physician told while pasting some herbs in his mortar. "Though, weakness will be there. And if it does not then... He became awkwardly silent.
"Then what, Vaidya-Ji... King Bharmal became restless.
Vaidya-Ji sighed and smiled. "Try to reduce her mental stress. Before being a king, you are a father as well.
King Bharmal sighed deeply closing his eyes. Then he looked at the physician. "Can you tell me Vaidya-Ji, what can I do?
A curtain of silence was dropped in the room suddenly. After a while the physician got up and left. King Bharmal slowly removed the curtain and sat beside his daughter.
Suddenly Jodha stirred. A weak murmur came out of her lips.
"Why... why...why...
"What happened, my child? Her mother came closer. "What are you talking about?
Jodha withered on the pillow. Her face was red in fever. "Why! Why I will suffer! Why! She muttered in a suppressed anger. "Go... go... never come back... She is dead... she is dead... She blabbered incoherently.
"What will happen to my child, Raja-sa? The queen ranted helplessly.
Bharmal got up and stood near to the window. He was supposed to settle the future of his dear daughter. But he does not have any answer. Nasty rumours on Jodha's name which burns the heart after penetrating the ears are floating in the air of Rajputana excluding Amer today. Even in the royal family of Amer too Jodha's respect is drastically decreasing along with the increasing rumours and gossips. Jodha can never be married off into a good family. An unmarried woman of a royal clan is often believed to be ominous. Maybe other daughters of his family would face difficulties in the time of marriage because of this. The fear of uncertainty has enveloped the fate of Amer, and people indirectly blame Jodha for this. It has been barely 6 months and everything is changed drastically. And this same situation is going to be continued for years after years! The small king of Amer does not have the capacity to prevent the flow.
No doubt King Bharmal loves his daughter very much and can go to any extent for her one smile. But real life is much far than the emotional world. In the real life King Bharmal has to deal with people, with politics, with beliefs. When Jodha planned to visit the ashram in Vrindavan he was relieved. He was certain that Jodha would be able to find a life for her in the open air of the holy place. The king would send all the ingredients of a lavishing life for her there, and she could live peacefully there far from the air of Amer. After all peace is better than happiness! But his relief was short-lived, as Jodha came back 2 days later she had set out as she had not even spent a whole night there. Little her parents got time to ask her what was wrong, as she was already unconscious in fever. Though, it was heard from the stuffs that something had happened in that place which compelled the princess to come back. But none knows the actual reason. Maybe Moti knows, but she will not say a word until Jodha orders her to open up.
"Baapusa...
Bharmal came back to the real world when he heard the voice of his eldest son. Bhagwant Das was standing at the door.
"Bhagwant! Bharmal looked excited. "Any news...
"I cannot tell here. Bhagwant Das looked serious. "Come outside... He looked at the bed worriedly. "How is Jodha?
"No improvement!
"Here she is suffering, and there our so-called brother is... Bhagwant's face became red in anger which he controlled efficiently. "Anyways, come, Baapusa.
"What happened Bhagwant? What news did you get? Bharmal asked after coming out of Jodha's bedroom. Bhagwant Das looked a bit lost while answering... "Sujamal is definitely doing something against us, Baapusa.
"What? Bharmal said excitedly. But Bhagwant Das did not answer. He was thinking something.
"Tell me...
"I don't know exactly, Baapusa. But a plotting is going on against us. I will not spare so Sujamal so easily, Baapusa. I will see till the end! Bhagwant Das uttered.
"In this situation our own son is plotting against us! Such ungrateful! Bharmal uttered in pained rage. "Is he collaborating with our enemies?
"I don't know exactly. But there is a good news that the states of Rajputana are not ready to indulge into a war. Everyone has fear of Mughals and none wants to waste manpower this time.
"And what about the work you had gone to do? Bharmal asked.
"Still thinking about it. Will tell you after confirming... and I have got a good channel to know the news of Sujamal.
"Ok! Bharmal covered his face. "Everything is messed up... don't know what to do!
"Don't worry Baapusa! Bhagwant touched his father's shoulder and uttered in a determined tone. "I am here!
"How are you doing, my dear?
Leelavati was shocked when two strong arms had hugged her from back, but soon she recognized the known touch of her husband. "So now you remember your wife! After spending nights somewhere else? She frowned with fake anger.
"It's not done! I had told you Leela, that I was going somewhere with some crucial work! Sujamal said anxiously.
"And may I know what that great work was which compelled you to forget me temporarily? Leelavati picked a brow.
"I went to meet someone... a friend... Sujamal looked lost in thoughts when he answered.
"I am really worried about you. Leelavati sounded serious now. "I cannot understand what you are doing...
"Don't worry, Leela! Sujamal's voice was firm. "Whatever I will do, will be for you and our child.
"Who was that friend whom you went to meet? Leelavati asked suspiciously.
"As if you will recognize him by name? Leave that! Sujamal laughed and put his hand on her baby-bump. "What is my little one doing now?
"Perhaps he is sleeping. Because he is not jumping inside. Leelavati smiled.
"I see. And what is my little one's mother doing?
"She is writing letters.
Sujamal's face fell. "Again you are writing to Amer?
Leelavati tried to smile. "You people might have political differences. But that does not mean I should forget my duties as a daughter-in-law of Amer... Kakisaa would worry a lot if I don't write anything...
"Why do you forget that it is they who are not willing to keep any connection? Sujamal told with a bit disgust. "It is not the first time you are writing to them. Have you ever received any reply? I myself had sent mails to Kaka-sa. But he did not even bother to reply. Even the letter I wrote to Jodha last month has got no response. God knows how they are treating her! Even after all these you will keep on sending letters??
"Okay, I won't... Leelavati kept the quill aside. "But how long it will continue like this? How long are you going to stay here? Won't it be better if you mend everything and...
"Sujamal...
They were interrupted by the shadow fallen on the curtain of the entrance. "Jaswant! Come in! Sujamal got up and Leela put on her veil.
"Sorry for disturbing you, brother. Can you please give a little time? Jaswant asked in a hesitating voice.
"Of course... Why don't you come in? Sujamal smiled while walking towards him.
"No I won't, Sujamal. I cannot enter inside your bedroom... Come out for a while. Jaswant's voice was curt and dignified.
"Ask your friend, Kunwar-Sa... that is this Leelavati has become so bad and ugly that great warrior Jaswant Singh is not even ready to enter in the room where she is sitting? Leelavati giggled from under the veil. She, her brother and Jaswant have been brought up together, so there is no place of shying much. Jaswant too smiled and looked at Sujamal. "Tell your wife, I mean Her Highness, Sujamal... that this poor Jaswant Singh does not have the capacity to stand on the same floor where the future queen of Rajputana is standing... Let him acquire that eligibility first!
"You both don't start again. Sujamal laughed and came out... "Tell Jaswant...
"Where had you gone, Sujamal? Jaswant asked sternly. His voice was so stern that it sounded somewhat insulting to Sujamal.
"Why? Can't I go anywhere I want? Hence he responded being enraged.
"I didn't mean that of course... If you don't want to tell you might not. Jaswant said calmly. "But should I conclude from your response that you had gone somewhere which you want to hide purposefully from the authority of Sonargarh?
"I had gone to meet my friend...
"Your friend means Ujal... that leader of Kanjars?
"I know you don't like him Jaswant...
"It is not the fact of how much I like someone personally, Sujamal... Matter is how much the man, who is apparently your friend, is safe for us. Can you assure me Sujamal that the leader of Kanjars, who once had a great debt from the Majesty of Amer, is not harmful enough for you and us?
Before Sujamal could answer something, Sagarmal came in the place. "What is going on?
"It seems your commander-in-general does not believe me enough, Sagarmal. Sujamal smirked.
"Do I have the right to question your credibility, Sujamal? I only asked something as a responsible man of Sonargarh... Jaswant said in a mild and resentful tone. "Anyways, I am sorry for my behavior, Kunwar Sujamal. Forgive me... I am going...
He was about to go, but Sagarmal stopped him. "Don't create scene now, Jaswant... Calm down, I will talk to you about it. He whispered and Jaswant stood beside.
"I got a news, Sujamal. Sagarmal changed the topic without any further dilemma. "Bhagwant Das has been seen very close to Sonargarh. It is suspected that someone from our fort met him. Do you know anything about it?
"Bhagwant Bhaisa? Sujamal seemed clueless... "I don't know...
"Bhagwant Das is not a fool like his father. We need to be warned. Sagarmal frowned. "A man from Amer had recently came to join you. How much reliable is he?
"Hukum Singh? He is working with me for last five years. I don't disbelieve his loyalty. Other people of my force are also loyal and trustworthy...
"And Ujal? Your tribal friend whom you had gone to meet? Sagarmal frowned...
"He is not supposed to be involved... But... Sujamal looked offended. "You too suspecting me?
"No my friend! Sagarmal laughed. "You are my own; why to suspect you? Just warning you about the situation... However, let's talk about the states which are at the first page of our hit-list. He cleverly changed the topic. "I think now we are prepared enough to wedge a battle.
"Our first target will be Amer. And Bhangarh. Jaswant murmured.
Sujamal was silent for a while. Then after thinking something he looked up. "I don't think direct attack will be anything worthy. Rather a treaty of negotiation will be better...
"Negotiation with Amer? Jaswant frowned.
"Yes... Maybe Amer is weak; but it is not empty. Amer's soil possesses a lot of valiant warriors and a face-off will be tough. Sujamal said. "Better if we sit with Kaka-Sa and talk...
"You were telling something else before... Sagarmal said.
"Yes... I was angrier that time. But now I am telling after thinking a lot. Sujamal said.
Sagarmal gazed at him for a while. Then he smiled intensely. "Yes, you're right. We might need to think about a concrete strategy to decrease the loss. Let's sit together at evening then? You're looking tired, go and have some rest... It seems Leela is waiting for you.
"Sure...
After Sujamal left, Sagarmal came closer to Jaswant.
"What do you recon? Jaswant asked with a slide smirk.
"I still refuse to believe Sujamal will play a double-game. Sagarmal commented after thinking a little. "He cannot be a traitor.
"He is not. Jaswant said. "But he is emotional. And under the pressure of emotion he will easily refuse your offer of becoming the king of whole Rajputana. That's my fear.
"Still... Sagarmal looked thoughtful. "You said that Sujamal had gone to the tribal village to meet the tribal leader Ujal...
"He has been seen to go to the village of Kanjars. But what is the guarantee that he was there all the time? He can go out anytime. Another coincidence is the province of the Mughals is very close to that tribal village. Why Sujamal went to close to a Mughal province suddenly? Jaswant said. "Anyways, not coming into conclusion. Let's observe some more days. But someone has communicated with Bhagwant Das and that is confirmed. Who is that? Not necessarily Sujamal, but any man on him, maybe? He looked lost for a moment before he could comment. "I recommend something, Sagarmal... Let's send Sujamal's own force somewhere else for combat so that none of them can play double game. And we need to give more attention towards that Hukum Singh and the leader of the Kanjars.
"It's a good idea, Jaswant. Sagarmal smiled with appreciation. "Anyways, Sujamal's words are not to neglect. I still need to think some more time before announcing war. Maybe a negotiation is needed...
"But Sagarmal... after so many preparations... Jaswant looked anxious.
"Don't fret, my friend... Sagarmal patted on his back. "War is a big decision, and we should give a lot of thought against it. Why to shed blood if we get what we need by a scratch of pen on a document?
"Maybe you're right. Jaswant nodded. He was thinking deeply.
It is told that patience is one of the most essential attribute of a strong man. But this time, the theory is not applying on Jalal. As his calmness, sensibility and patience has come to an end as he is getting more and more restless day by day. After getting such a strong jolt from Purnima in the ashram of Vrindavan he has not slept. The pain of losing Purima under the circumstances was bearable. But the pain of being rejected by Purnima is inconsolable... as there is a sting of insult attached to it; the insult of his love, his honesty and his patience. And that sting will not let him to forget and move on. Jalal is not a man who accepts defeat so easily; even defeat itself cannot snatch the spirit of victory from him. He will not lose hope. One day he will find Purnima, will stand in front of her and ask her what was the reason of the incident in Vrindvan... And he knows, she will no more be able to deny his existence. Jalal does have that confidence on himself, on his love...
But how can he be calm when the process of searching Purnima is getting delayed for no reason? Each and every moment he is waiting for a simple information from his spy in Amer, but in vein! Is his spying system so inefficient that it cannot even give him a single information from an ant-like state in time? If it is the condition, how he will rule the empire?
Though, if Jalal was in his usual calm state, he would understand that the news is not taking longer than it is expected; it is him who has become irrationally impulsive.
In this morning too, Jalal was sitting in his room in wet, sweated body after his morning exercise session without caring for bath and refreshment, holding a glass of health-drink, eagerly waiting for the letter he is looking for. The delay again made him angry, and all his rage fell on the taste of the drink which he was sipping. "Damn it! An angry Jalal threw that glass on the floor with a bang. And just at the nick of time someone stood at the door.
"Oops... I mean... may I come in... Shahenshah? A familiar voice flowed in the air which temporarily wiped out the rage and restlessness from Jalal.
"Abdul!! A surprised Jalal spontaneously ran towards him. "You? What a pleasant surprise!
Abdul was looking slender and older than he usually seems to be. Maybe it is because of the crutches that he was bearing. The deficiency of a leg was very much visible in his body, though his bright smile and glace on face shows that he has adapted this fatal change and living a proper life despite becoming lame forever. The new responsibility and of course the money has given him a new glow of satisfaction and firmness in his face. It seemed he is happy. Jalal felt happy seeing Abdul happy.
"How can I be late, Majesty, When you yourself has called me at your service! Abdul smiled heartily after bowing down to show respect. "I set out just after receiving the letter from you.
"Good! Jalal chuckled. "From now on you will work from Agra headquarters. I need you closer to me.
"It is my fortune, My Lord! Abdul bent his head with a smile. "I too was not happy enough in Fort of Ratangarh away from you.
In extreme joy Jalal patted Abdul's shoulder. "Sit... and tell me how you enjoyed your responsibilities in Ratangarh?
"Yeah... Abdul nodded. "But before that I need to handover this to you. He took out a piece of paper from his kaftan. "It came from Amer today from a secret source, Majesty... The source said that it consists of crucial information which only the emperor knows.
"Abdul!
Abdul was somewhat shocked hearing Jalal's excited voice. His face was shining in extreme excitement.
"What, Majesty... He asked confusedly.
"Read that! Read that at once! Jalal almost shouted while rubbing his hands together. "What are you waiting for? Read!
A confused Abdul opened the fold and started reading.
"My Lord,
As per your instruction, I continued my search for the lady named Purnima both in and outside of the palace. It is very sorry to inform you that I have got no fruitful result even after giving my best. The biggest reason of the failure is Sadanand Vaidya, who was a lead to find the lady, is missing from Amer. Last time he had met the elder princess some months ago, and after that he has left the fort forever. I have got to know that he is living with the nomadic people of the desert, but having exhausted of resources and surrounded by various danger, it was not possible to search him out of the fort. It would be better if His Majesty himself allocate some other people to search Sadanand among the tribals and nomadics of desert.
As you instructed, I had also searched the temporary health-camp. It has been months, the camp is broken and scattered. The elder princess does not give time in these philanthropic works anymore, so these camp-records are not maintained. However, I have investigated a lot and got to meet some refugees. For the first time I heard Purnima's name from their mouth. According to them she was the leader of the rescuing team of the health camp. I heard only praises of that woman from various people but none could give me any lead about her current location. Everyone said that Purnima is the maid of the princess, but there is no record of Purnima in the palace directory, clearly stating her identity is wrong. I am searching for any official record of the rescuing team now, hoping that I would get to know something about the leader of the stuffs in that health camp.
Ambience of Amer is peaceful right now. But something is cooking under the cover of this peace. You wanted to know about Sujamal. Sujamal is right now in Sonargarh, the paternal house of his pregnant wife; he has taken all his forces with him. The king of Sonargarh is a friend of Sujamal Singh. No letters or news is coming from Sujamal to Amer. The members of Amer family seem especially disturbed with this fact. It is suspected that Sujamal has something hidden under his sleeves. It seems all the other states of Rajputana are afraid of wedging a war, hence Amer is not expecting a war right now. The king of Amer is a down-to-earth man, does not like war and all. Still Amer has a huge inventory of army. The army of Amer contains...
"Stop! Jalal roared suddenly and thrashed himself on the seat covering his face with palms. Abdul was reading with a flow, he got perplexed with this sudden order. He could not understand the reason of stopping him just at the most significant point of the letter.
"Are you alright, Your Majesty? He asked with a sting of hesitation looking at the vulnerable Majesty.
Jalal took another moment to be normal. When he picked up his face, the shadow of frustration was still outshining his natural glow. Still he tried to smile. "Yeah, I am alright... I should not have hoped anything actually. If someone wants to hide on her own choice, it is not so easy to find her.
Though Abdul could not understand a word, since cross-questioning the emperor goes against his ethics, he remained silent.
"The later part of the letter... Jalal continued. "I will listen after sometime. I need to understand the structure of Amer first to determine a strategy. I need to overpower Amer as soon as possible!
"May I ask you something, Majesty? Abdul could not help anymore.
"Yes please...
"Why you are so attentive and particular about Amer? If you want to win Amer, a single war will be enough to crush that small fort forever. But instead you are waiting and sending spies there to understand the internal structure...it seems you don't want to win Amer only...
"You know what Abdul, you are more intelligent than you think you are. Jalal smiled palely, but did not answer him. "Amer is very important to me, Abdul... I cannot be silly-sally about Amer. My own life depends on a single decision about that small state! He sighed and covered his face again.
"When you will reply the letter, Majesty? Abdul asked.
"Let me think first... Jalal said. Yes, he was thinking a lot. The more he was thinking, the more he was tangled. Purnima has definitely faked her identity. She does exist in the royal palace itself, is alive, safe and sound much to Jalal's relief, serves the princess like she used to be, but she is not known as Purnima. That's why her name is not in the directory of the palace. In the health-camp she has used her name Purnima, to him she introduced herself as Purnima... but what can be her real name? Why did she lie? Why did she refuse to recognize him in Vrindavan? She used to tell that she has own restrictions to go with Jalal... but what those restriction could be?
Another pattern Jalal has found while analyzing the situation. Somehow Purnima is very deeply related to the princess of Amer. She used to meet him as princess had gave him refuge; she used to be the leader of the camp maintained by the princess; she goes to the pilgrimage with the princess in order to serve her; she confidently says that the princess will save her anyways if she is in danger. Why the name of the princess comes so frequently when the topic of Purnima comes up? What is the relation? What is the mystery? Jalal does not like mystery and cannot sit silently before deriving a valid logic behind that, but his destiny now has made him stand in front of a weird mystery revolving around two women and watching the circus silently.
Jalal was clueless to deduce the relation now... but one thing he understood clearly. Both the princess and Purnima are connected with one single thread. He has to get access to the princess once if he wants to find Purnima. And for that he needs a complete possession in Amer in a proper way...
"...Excuse me, Your Majesty... May I come in...?
Jalal got back into the real time hearing the voice. "Jafar? This time?
"Majesty... Jafar looked very worried. "I have got to know something which is very important!
"About what?
"About Wazir-E-Ala Bairam Khan, Huzur!!
Jalal got a little shock. He had appointed Jafar behind Khan Baba some days back to clear his suspicions, but never expected that Jafar will really get any news. "What information? Tell me... He asked after a moment.
"A conspiracy is going on, Majesty! And Khan-E-Khana is a part of that.
Jalal could not blink for a while out of shock. "Do you know what are you telling, Jafar? He then uttered sternly.
"You might behead me if I give wrong information, My Lord... But I have listened myself. Jafar told excitedly. "Meetings go on in Khan-E-Khana's palace days after days. The suspended officers, the people of the system, who are against you, and some of the religious heads come regularly in the meetings. All the proposals those are made are against you, My Lord! The religious heads are hell bent to prove that you are a curse against Islam and hence completely ineligible to be a Mughal Emperor. They are even plotting to dethrone you and make your step-brother Mirza Hakim the next emperor.
Jalal tried to hide the shiver of his voice by giving extra pressure. "Wha... what was Khan-E-Khana's role in these meetings?
"I am sorry to say, His Majesty... Jafar uttered in a lower, hesitating voice. "Even though it is not heard that he is appreciating the idea of dethroning you, he agrees very much that your compassion is a threat to Islam and your reign will subsequently lead to the end of Mughals. After a small pause he again continued- "After learning about your secret trip in Vrindavan, they are even more angry and wants to take actions soonest possible.
Jalal stared speechlessly. The night he came back from Vrindavan and he had a conflict with Khan Baba, he had felt the long-lost warmth of concern in his eyes. He could not match that Khan Baba with the description of Jafar. Suddenly his heart felt with a bitterness of hatred. Face-to-face conflict is something else... but putting spies behind the back, conspiring secretly, these actions are cheap and unforgivable! And Khan Baba, the man who has literally created him, is doing such things? Why does a man stoop so low that he even forgets where does he belong to?
"Majesty?
"Yeah! Jalal forcefully broke his static and rub his face once to wipe out the cloud of gloom. "Jafar, do you have any direct proof of all these allegations?
"My Lord... Jafar spoke. "I have eavesdropped some of the conversations. There is no documented proof...
"Then gather proofs. Jalal told with a frown. "I want to know every details. Who are involved, how much are they involved and any strong evidence. Note that I cannot directly accuse the respected religious people of the empire if I do not have any strong evidence... Abdul... He looked at Abdul. "You take over this case and investigate. I want each and every name involved. Be warned, none should know about this.
"Sure, My Lord... Abdul nodded. "I will start working from now on. Now allow me to leave...
Jalal nodded while closing his eyes tiredly. Abdul paused for a while before leaving, and waited till Jafar leaves. Then he came closer. "Pardon me, Majesty... May I ask something?
"Ask.
"Why don't you directly talk to Khan-E-Khana? Abdul said. "I mean... if he is by any chance involved you can give him notice to...
"I know him better. Jalal said in a thoughtful tone. "He will never tell me the truth if I ask him directly. Rather it will hurt his self-ego which might not be good. Hence I want proof, so that I can catch the real mastermind red-handed...
Covering her face with a transparent scarf, Salima Begam was supervising the cleaning of Bairam Khan's study. Generally these types of works do not need any attention from the lady of the house, the head of the maids are enough. But Salima Begam keeps the responsibility of cleaning this particular room once in a month on her own. Bairam Khan is not an arranged person; the maids often displace his important documents while sweeping and she has to bear the wrath after that. Hence she has decided to supervise and to cross-check each and every simple piece of papers or things before sending that to garbage.
But today she was not paying much heed. A cloud of deep worry had covered her mind. Bairam Khan is a changed man now. His actions, way of talking, friend-cycle everything is changed. And Salima Begam is not able to tolerate that change. She fears.
Is he really changed? Or everything was buried under his sophisticated attitude these days, which is getting out in every moment with the growing time? Only difference is that till today his inner self was only open to Salima Begam, and now it is going to be opened in front of the rest of world. This revelation will be not good! It will leave them into dark.
Thrassshh!
The sudden sound returned Salima Begam to the real world. "What did you do? She looked at the maid with vexed eyes. The nincompoop girl had dropped a fat case of scrolls from her hand. "Sorry, My Lady! She uttered in a pale tone and started picking the scrolls up. The important documents were scattered and was fallen here and there of the floor. An annoyed Salima Begam casually picked some of them. Before keeping those back in the case suddenly her eyes fell on one of the scrolls. She became stunned.
The first phase of the document was a heading- Dethroning the Emperor.
For a second, Salima Begam's heartbeat was paused. Then regaining her sense fast, she went through the whole document. The document, which looked like a rough of a meeting proposal, was full of a lot of diagrams and flowcharts; some she could understand, some she could not. But the content took her heart out of her rib-cage. Especially the underlined part of the flowchart... assassination of the emperor...!
