Bollywood debut with Raja Ki Ayegi Baraat,
where she played the role of a rape victim.
Since then, the actor has played strong
characters on the big screen and has been
applauded for the same throughout her 20-
year career.
During an interaction with HT Brunch, Rani
revealed that until Saathiya which released
in 2002, the actor did not take the
responsibility of her career. She also said
that her mother Krishna Mukherjee chose
roles for her. From Saathiya, the actor
started going through her scripts and that
was kind of a turning point for Rani. The
talented actor stated, "I became aware of
the fact that I have an affinity towards
characters with a strong emotional tug. Only
when I could connect with a character on
an emotional level could I make it so
believable on-screen that the audience
would also connect with it. Also, I wanted to
portray the modern, contemporary Indian
woman who is relatable and talks about real
issues. So I started picking up those kinds of
roles."
Since then, Rani's choice of films were Chalte
Chalte (2003), Yuva (2004), Hum Tum (2004),
Veer-Zaara (2004), Black (2005), Bunty Aur
Babli (2005), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006),
No One Killed Jessica (2011) and Mardaani
(2014). Rani further spoke about her two
special films - Black and Hichki, where she
played differently abled characters. Rani
said, "Hichki and Black are very special to
me. In both the films, I play differently abled
characters, something I am not. Most of the
characters I have played are different from
one another and each had its own
challenges. But at the end of the day, I was
just playing a woman with moods and
emotions I could relate to. When I play a
differently abled person, I have no personal
reference points. I have not lived that life or
faced their problems."
She further said, "First, I had to make them
look convincing, and second, I had to
represent them in the right spirit so that
when you see the character on screen and
then meet people like that in real life, you
don't feel pity, but respect. I wanted the
audience to look up to these characters.
They live life with a lot of dignity and it is
attached to their well-being."
