Manmohan Desai, Hrishikesh Mukherjee,
David Dhawan, Subhash Ghai and more
recently, Rohit Shetty often pops up when
we discuss about few of the most
successful commercial directors of the Hindi
Film Industry. But seldom would we see
people mentioning Rakesh Roshan in the
bracket of the most successful Hindi Film
Director. Statistically, Rakesh Roshan has a
solid track-record as a director. Having
directed 13 films in his career, 8 of them
have proved to be extremely successful at
the Box-Office.
After a not so promising acting career,
Rakesh Roshan ventured into the technical
aspect of film-making with Khudgarz. His
directorial debut starring Shatrugun Sinha
and Jeetendra proved to be immensely
successful at the Box-Office and with the
film, Roshan made a statement that he is
here to stay as a director. As a follow up to
Khudgarz, Rakesh Roshan directed Khoon
Bhari Mang starring Rekha in lead. The film
was the official adaptation of Australian
Mini-Series, Return to Eden and was touted
as the comeback film for Rekha. While the
trade wasn't too excited about the film, it
surprised one and all as it did not just win
critical acclaim, but also proved to be a
commercial success at the ticket window.
Khudgarz to Karan Arjun to Krrish 3:
Decoding Rakesh Roshan's Success as a
Director at the Box-Office!
The success of the above-mentioned films
cemented Rakesh Roshan's space as a
director in the industry and from hereon, it
wasn't too difficult for him to approach the
big-stars for his films. Next after Khoon
Bhari Mang was Kaala Bazaar featuring two
of the biggest stars of that era, Anil Kapoor
and Jackie Shroff in lead. The trade was
excited about the film, given the fact that it
marked the teaming up for Anil Kapoor and
Jackie Shroff after the humongous success
of Ram Lakhan, however the film failed to
live onto the hype and tumbled after a
promising start at the box-office.
The director didn't lose his hopes after that
one failure and came back stronger with
Kishen Kanhaiya. The film starring Anil
Kapoor in a double role, which was the
official remake of Ram Aur Shyam, proved
to be a smash hit. However, after Kishen
Kanhaiya, Roshan delivered two
unsuccessful films in the form of Khel and
King Uncle. None the less, Roshan had seen
much bigger failure before in his acting
career, and he made a strong comeback
with Karan Arjun featuring two of the
biggest superstars of 90's, Shah Rukh Khan
and Salman Khan. The film marked the
teaming up of the gen-next superstars for
the first time in their career and the film
emerged one of the biggest blockbusters of
all time. After Karan Arjun, there was no
looking back for Rakesh Roshan. Yes, he did
face a minor hiccup in the form of Koyla in
1997, however apart from Koyla, all his films
post the release of Karan Arjun starred his
son, Hrithik Roshan in lead and proved to
be blockbusters of epic proportion.

Could Play Siblings Even Now, Aged
Siblings
Very few in the industry till date have
utilized the stardom and screen presence of
Hrithik Roshan in the right way, and Rakesh
Roshan is one of those rare directors who
has never failed to present his son in the
avatar audience like to see him in. Roshan
has directed Hrithik in four films i.e. Kaho
Na Pyaar Hai, Koi Mil Gaya, Krrish, Krrish 3
and all of them won over the audience. The
films didn't just act as a showreel glorifying
the stardom of Hrithik Roshan, but also had
ample of scope as far as performance is
concerned. While Kaho Na Pyaar Hai
established Hrithik as the boy next door, Koi
Mil Gaya saw a 360-degree transformation
of Hrithik Roshan as a specially abled child.
With Krrish and Krrish 3, Rakesh Roshan
made the first superhero film of India and
passed with flying colours.
The veteran director is currently busy with
the pre-production of Krrish 4, which is
expected to go on floors next year. As he
gears up for his 14th Directorial, here is a
glance at successful films directed by him:
Krrish 3: Blockbuster
Krrish: Blockbuster
Koi Mil Gaya: Super Hit
Kaho Na Pyaar Hai: Blockbuster
Karan Arjun: Blockbuster
Kishen Kanhaiya: Super Hit
Khoon Bhari Mang: Super Hit
Khudgarz: Hit
PS: While Koyla was an average grosser,
Rakesh Roshan's Karobaar was stuck in
production for over 8 years before it finally
released in 2000. The film eventually
flopped at the Box-Office. Objectively
speaking, if we exclude Karobaar, out of
the 12 films directed by Rakesh Roshan, 8
of them are clean hits, whereas one is an
average grosser. Merely, 3 films by the
veteran director have flopped at the ticket
window.
