Yes!
Casting aspersions on her character , that too, in the presence of the palace staff.
I made him too much back than I had supposed to! 😆
Kudos to Jodha for standing up to him - speaking up for herself and her subjects.
⭐️
Jalal is still tormented by what happened between them in the hut the previous night.
He is an emperor ; yet so helpless.
Really! 😔
Moti's love for Jodha and her well-being is so touching. She knows marriage to Suryabaan would mean the end of happiness for Jodha.
She is her best friend and she understands her the most! 😃
OMG! Jodha has come to meet Jalal again.
Really superb, Stuti!
😉
Thank you for giving us this gripping story.
Thank you so much for this beautiful comment DI! 😳

Chapter 20:
Jalal was still thinking that he is in dream. This cannot be possible. She cannot come. In this beautiful night, when the whole world in floating in the river of moonlight, when the nature is playing with all its children by touching the wand of hangover and passion in their heart, her sudden presence is nothing but a dream! A beautiful, impossible dream only... But when she touched his hand, her warm soft touch filled Jalal's heart and he could feel her presence inside his heart, and his heart skipped beating... She is here! She is here!
"Where are you going Chandra? Purnima asked again, in a very low voice.
"I'm going back! Jalal told in still a hallucinating voice. "Back to my land... my own place...
"You are leaving forever! She uttered quite normally, but Jalal felt the pain hiding under the coat of courtesy in her voice... She tried to smile, but her smile did not look natural. "Good! She said... "I think that will be good for... for you... for me... for both of us...
For one moment Jalal felt so desperate that he wanted to hug her tightly and then to run away with her. But he controlled... he cannot forget that he is Jalaluddin Mohammad, he is not Chandrajeet Rathore.
"You... tonight... I didn't expect you... He told in a pale voice instead...
"I also did never think that I will come here ever again! She said, as if she was talking to her own. "But... everything is changing around me so fast! I am unable to understand where I am actually going! I don't know how I... she sighed and swallowed the rest of her words. "Moti, my friend, wanted me to come here! She herself forced me to come...She paused for a moment and smiled. "For the last time...
"Sit... Jalal offered her seat at the door of hut and sat beside her. She sat, and stared silently at the moon. Her eyes were dreamy, as if she was seeking her most wanted desire from the deity of moon- that is peace! Jalal kept on sitting silently staring at own toe, his mind floating in the sea of different emotions... With increasing time, the load of pain was burdening on his heart! A good-bye moment is always sad, but he did not ever experience that the pin-drop silence in the moment of farewell can bear so much pain and tears inside!
"Where you will go from here? Purnima suddenly asked, perhaps to break this awkward silence...
"Don't know! Maybe in the nearby places of Amer for some days, and then back to my family, again... Jalal smiled.
"Good! Someone is waiting for you there! Purnima smiled...
"I don't think so! Jalal sighed with a touchy smile. "There is a strange pain of happiness in waiting for someone... It hurts, but still it saturates the heart with an uncanny contentment. Yearning for someone is much more blissful than gaining, and it is not felt by everyone! He looked unmindful. "Neither my wife waits for me like this, nor do I... Waiting for someone is something more intense, more priceless, more divine... Perhaps I would never understand this if... he smile. "If someone hadn't come to me every night with food and water!
She smiled heartily this time, her smile mixed a little teary touch. "You know what Chandrajeet, she told in a deep voice then, "No matter how much I try, but the truth is I will always wait for you, I will always yearn for you... I know that this will be in vain, I know you will never come, I know maybe it is not ethical in society, might be a great sin... but still I... I will never forget you, Chandra! Never!
Jalal rested his back against the wall and looked at the moon... "If I could take you along with me Purnima! But if I do so, I have to bind our relation in some dry, bald conditions... I am not able to love you unconditionally; which I think, I believe is an insult to you... to our relation... to our love... If I could...
"I don't want to hear these... She stopped him. "There is many constraints from my part too. I cannot forget everything and completely surrender myself to you to leave the world with you! There are my own restrictions; and I don't misunderstand you! Rather... she too looked at the moon, like Jalal was seeing, and told in a clam voice. "I think I have left that phase much behind... I cannot misunderstand you, I cannot mistrust you even if I want!
Jalal looked at her eyes... His heart ached in a strange pain...
"Even two days before I was skeptical about you. I could not believe what you told me about you... I always felt you are a mystery, and you are deliberately keeping everything in mystery. I always wondered how you are able to keep such a mysterious aura around you, I used to suspect you; I wanted to discover you, I wanted to know you... Her eyes lost in the stream of moonbeams, "And in that trial I myself could not understand when I have imprisoned myself in that web of mysterious aura... Now I don't feel you are stranger anymore... I have passed the phase of that doubt, that curiosity... I feel if you were never a stranger; as if you were always there, somewhere in my heart, somewhere in my dreams...
"Purnima...
Purnima, alias Jodha had to stop, as Jalal suddenly had clasped her hands in utter passion... Jodha did not take her hands back, and closed her eyes... Two drops of tears fell from her eyes and wet Jalal's hands.
"I knew from first, from the first night when we met near that lake, that you are the woman of my dream... whom I desire from my deepest of heart... The moment your fiery eyes met my eyes, I had recognized you; you are mine! I craved for your one glance, I could not believe that our meeting was only for some moments, I craved to get you forever... And after all these, when you appeared in front of me becoming my savior, when you came to me in your own loving form, when you tended me with your caring touch, when you showed the priceless treasures of your womanhood after showing your valor, and I saw how much complete you are in yourself, I understood what love actually is, by loving you! He smiled dreamily... "Before that I only knew how to achieve and how to gain, Purnima; it is you who taught me how to crave for someone, how the yearning can become the language of love... I tasted the sweetest charm of waiting for someone special, I got the joy of love, the pain of love... You saturated my life Purnima! Wherever I may go, may be far away from you, but this heart will always be saturated with contentment of the moments shared with you... forever!
"I am fortunate that I met you... I don't need anything else from this life... Jodha uttered in an intense voice.
The sweet beams of the moon was splashing over the rooftop, they were bathed by the soothing moonlight. Both of them had relaxed their head against the wall of the hut now, drinking the beauty of the silvery glow of the sky... "You know Purnima, Jalal said. "My logical mind knows everything, it understands the situations, it understands the constraints and all, but... he sighed, "Why does the heart does not find the answer of the question... that why we cannot be together! Why we have to be apart? Why we have to spend our rest of life in wait of each other despite knowing that wait will never end?
"Perhaps... because... Jodha said, a slight smile curling in her lips glowing in the moon, "We are complete by our love itself, and we do not need to be together to complement each other, to love each other!
Jalal looked at her, his sad smile slowly glowed as brighter, and she smiled back, and again started gazing at the moon. The whole nature was diffusing peace now...
Hours past this way, sitting by each other together, feeling the presence of each other from the deepest of the heart for the last time... after long time, Jodha looked at him... "So, you are really going! Only some hours left...
"Only some hours left before morning. Jalal smiled. "I had decided to leave at night as it is difficult to walk in a dessert on sun. But... the night changed every calculation!
"I was wondering if it will be okay for you to set out for a long journey by feet now. She told in a concerned voice. "Your feet are not completely healed and you are still laming a little.
"Nothing will happen. Jalal told. "A warrior can bear that small pain. Besides, he smiled sadly. "I have many more burden of pain to deal with in my heart, that little physical pain will be negligible...
"I feel there's something uncannily saturating in that pain of heart Chandra, a man enjoys this melancholic pain of heart in his solitude. But physical agony does not completes, rather it distracts... Jodha told in a light and hearty voice. "If it is okay for you, please wait for the day. I promise I will send you a horse or a camel to set out in dessert land!
Jalal was staring mesmerized at her. He got back in his senses. "It is so kind of you, Purnima... He said.
Purnima chuckled in a light way and then sighed. The silver beam of moon was now carrying a gloomy mist in its flow. The moment had come.
Jalal turned to her. "So, we are going away from each other forever! Is there any chance that I can have a small glimpse of yours in my life?
"Probably not! Jodha smiled. She was lost suddenly. If ever the chance comes she will not be able to utilize it. She will be the crown queen of Bhangadh then; the chains of responsibilities and burdens of relationships will imprison her forever!
Both of them became silent for a while. Then Jalal spoke, it seemed he had to won over his certain dilemmas for that.
"Purnima... he called.
"Hmm?
"I know I should not say that... it... it somehow may... may sound offensive, or you may find it as your dishonor but I do not mean that... Jalal hesitated... "I only... If I ask you for a permission will you grant it?
"Permission? What permission?
Jalal sat closer, in a shy and hesitating face he spoke in a low tone... "May I touch your lips Purnima, for once?
Jodha stared at him amazed.
"What happened between us yesterday or day before yesterday was sudden, unexpected, there was no opportunity of asking you anything or giving a thought to everything what happened. But today I want to listen to your mind. I have always stopped myself from desiring you passionately, thinking that it will cross the limit of dignity. But now nothing has any bound in my heart as I know I love you. I do not have any avidity towards your body, I do not lust you. But in the name of my love, my unfinished love-story, if I want to immortal this moment in my heart by drawing a signature of my love by touching your lips, will you give me that permission?
Jodha still did not say anything. The corner of her eyes eventually filled with tears...
"Purnima...
She quietly gazed at his eyes, her lips trembled but she did not tell anything. Slowly she held his hands and placed his fingers on her petal-like lips. Jalal's fingers swept through the curl of her upper lip, drinking the beauty of her eyes passionately. Jodha's heart skipped beating as she felt a strange excitement inside her heart, never felt before. Voluntarily her hand went through his arms and she touched his cheeks gently, she was lost in his deep eyes. Her breathing increased as they came closer, and automatically Jodha's hands embraced Jalal's body... Jalal, while gazing her lips in memorization, pulled her face closer by holding her neck passionately, and his warm breath swept over Jodha's heart, bathing her in the shower of passion and desire. For the first time in her life Jodha knew how it feels when a man touches with love, she knew the meaning of desire, and she felt the woman inside her is being purified, being complete with every touch of Chandrajeet...
"You're so beautiful Purnima... You're so complete... Jalal whispered in a content yet sad tone... "The man who will get you will be the luckiest man of this world!
"I am yours, Chandrajeet... None else can get me The woman inside Jodha spoke out in utmost passion... "I am all yours. I was yours in my previous birth, I will be yours in my future lives; I have surrendered everything to you and purified myself in the essence of love! Nothing can take me away from you anymore... Her voice shivered in emotion as she took her lips closer to his lips and completely surrendered herself in his arms... "Come Chandrajeet, complete me... Rejuvenate my womanhood with your touch, let my life to be content in itself... Chandrajeet, today you win your Purnima completely! I urge to you!
"It is not a victory Purnima... It is a defeat... Jalal's passionate breath brushed through Jodha's face... "Today I accept my defeat in front of your flaming glow and your charm, I surrender in front of you today with all my masculinity, my vigour and my valour... I am fortunate that I met that woman in my life who made me bow my head in front of her in the charm of love... I am fortunate that you defeated me, I am fortunate that you completed and saturated my life. I...
He left his words incomplete as a passionate blow from inside had pushed him closer to Jodha, and he closed his eyes and instantly bit her beautiful lips with his lips... Jodha felt an electric shock inside her spine, and she embraced himself with all her strength, her lips being captured in the cage of his lips. Their lips parted together, and clasped into one another. His hand rested below her ear, his thumb caressing her cheek as their breaths mingled. She ran her fingers down his spine, pulling him closer until there was no space left between them and she could feel the beating of his heart against her chest. The world fell apart and the moon kept on showing the drizzle of love through its silvery glow...
And long hours past... The gray night seemed to be slowly overpowered by the soft orange ray of dawn from the east sky... And they came back into reality from the land of dreams... Both stared at each other and then readily broke the embracement.
"Purnima... Jalal called vacantly. Jodha stared at him, without understanding what her heart is trying to tell her. She had been filled up with an uncanny content happiness. But at the same time a string of pain is pinching inside heart. A strange sensation of guilt and fear overpowering the mind... Perhaps it is too tough to break the barriers set by sociality!
"Good Bye Chandrajeet... She uttered slowly before setting feet from the hut. Jalal kept on staring at her, his content heart overpowered by dejection and grief... She walked through the path and he kept on staring at her. After some moments she turned back, there were tears in her eyes, Jalal kept on staring, he felt his eyes getting blurred but he could not wipe the tears. Neither his, not hers...
As these drops of tears will be the treasures for both of them for the rest of life.
...
At day, Sujamal sought Jodha in her room.
Jodha did not come out of her room from morning. Neither she bathed, nor she went to the temple for daily Puja or sword-practice. She was only sitting vacant in front of the little idol of Radha-Krishna in her room, staring at the smiling face of Radha, her mind was fighting with a never-ending storm. But from outside she was calm... like a sea...
"You both loved each other to the eternity... She told in her mind, her eyes gazing at the smiling face of Radha-Krishna. "And you never need any social name for your relationships. Your love for each-other, the complete devotion is immortalized, is worshipped through the ages. When my God has teaches me that love is the most pure thing of the world, why the sociality names it as impure? Love is not a sin... complete devotion to someone, getting mingled with someone's existence is not a sin. I have not done any sin!
Her thought was interrupted, as Sujamal peeped in. "Jodha, my sister?
"Bhaisa? Jodha got up and came towards him. "You, now?
"Why, do I need to get invitation from you to come here? Sujamal smiled endearingly. "Just wondering what me dear sister is doing alone in room. I did not see you in the practice-ground, neither you were in garden or temple or library... So...
"Come Bhaisa... Jodha smiled. "Sit, and say...
"It seems Jodha Devi's mood is off today? Sujamal chuckled. "Tell me, what happened?
Josha smiled sadly, did not answer. Neither did she try to hide the fact that she is sad. "Leave it Bhaisa... she said. "Tell me, what about the raids going on in the state...
"Yeah, going well. Samar Singh is leading the team. He is sincere, will work well. However... Sujamal waved the topic aside. "Jodha, I am free today. Why don't we spend some time together?
"I am not in mood Bhaisa. Jodha told with a courtesy smile.
"I know how to make you happy. Sujamal pulled her by hands. "Come, let's go to practice-field. I will teach you some new skills today.
"No Bhaisa... what's the use! A sigh came out from Jodha's heart.
Sujamal's heart ached. He had been the witness of Jodha's humiliations and heartbreak by her in-laws these days. He can feel how the stream of happiness in Jodha's heart is drying up. Sometimes he feels angry, he wants to kick the Bhangarh clan out of Amer at once. But he can't. No matter how much the males of Amer love their daughter Jodha, they cannot sacrifice the political interest behind this alliance due to Jodha's happiness. And Sujamal is also not an exception.
So he tried to pacify Jodha. "Jodha, Sword-fighting is your passion. Don't sacrifice that for sake of your marriage.
Jodha smiled sarcastically. "What to do Bhaisa! I am the daughter of Amer royal family Bhaisa. I know it is necessary to negotiate, to compromise to be happy. However... Okay if you insist I am coming. Give me two minutes to get ready.
Sujamal stayed stunned as he felt the pinch of Jodha in his heart. After some time Jodha came back from dressing room with his white practice dress and went with Sujamal.
...
"And then, and then where did she go?
"I don't know Kunwarsa!
"Shit!
Suryabaan banged his head with palm. His spy is too innocent to understand anything it seems. Yesterday after the conflict with Jodha his doubt even increased. So he planned to use one of the maids of Jodha's palace to spy her. He got a small girl named Panna, who was stupid enough to understand anything hence he was safe, but now it seems she is not at all eligible for the job. Yesterday she delivered his letter to the princess but was unable to read her expression after reading that- whether she was sad or happy or angry or anything else; and then at night she pointed out that princess was not in her bed, but did not care to think where she is. Total useless!
"Go now! I am not going to give you a penny for this! he yelled at vain at the girl before paying her. After the girl left unsatisfied, he sighed with disgust. Pity him, he is going to get such a beautiful wife whom he has started liking, but just before that marriage that girl is showing so many dramas that are too much to tolerate in a royal family. Even as a reply of his apology letter she wrote such an arrogant one which he cannot imagine a woman can write. He is a dignified prince so he cannot question a dignified princess for her attitude before marriage; he has nothing to do without counting days. Let the marriage happen, he will show her who is he!
With the sound of footsteps on the corridor Suryabaan looked back and was shocked to see Jodha in her warrior suit accompanying prince Suryabaan to the practice ground most probably! Grand! So brother-sister is now going to play swords! It seems all the brothers have spoilt Jodha Bai together, and none has bothered to teach her etiquettes.
Suryabaan went to them out of courtesy. "Good morning Kunwar Sujamal. He greeted.
Both Sujamal and Jodha were talking to each-other, they looked at Suryabaan. "Yes, good morning to you too, Suryabaan Singh!
Suryabaan stole a glimpse of Jodha meanwhile. She was looking too calm that expectation today. The blazing eyes are dull today. Those eyes met his eyes for once, she nodded in courtesy and took back her glare; who will say this girl is meeting with her to-be-husband in broad daylight! No sign of shyness at all!
However... "Going to sword-fight, it seems? Suryabaan asked Sujamal.
"Yes. It has been a long time since practicing together. Sujamal smiled. "My sister is an excellent sword-fighter. Did you know?
"Yeah Yeah! She told me. Suryabaan said. "Though, never had been lucky enough to see her fighting.
"Why don't you join us? Sujamal told at once; perhaps he thought Jodha will impress him with her skill and thus will secure the permission from her husband to continue her sword-fight practices after marriage. Jodha sighed to hide her disgust. What can she tell now!
"Well why not? Suryabaan said with smile. "It will be good to see her playing with sword. I am coming.
Three of them came in the practice ground near the arsenal, took special practicing swords in hand. "Okay, first let's have a warm up session Sujamal Ji? What about a duel? Then we can see Kunwari Sa's skills...
Jodha smiled. Maybe Kunwarsa has guessed that she is not eligible enough for warming up with a duel along with a trained warrior prince! "As you wish, Kunwarsa... She told and stood aside. "You two fight, I am practicing myself!
Both the prince took their position and was about to start the duel, one soldier came suddenly.
"Excuse me Kunwarsa! You have to come. It is urgent. He informed while panting.
"Why what happened?
"Kunwarsa, a horse has been found in the market while raiding. The horse has the mark of Mughal dynasty on its forehead. And also there are some other belongings which is generally used by Mughals of higher ranks!
"What?? Three of them shouted together. "Mughals?? The name of Mughals was more fearful than volcano or cyclone in the regions of Hindu kingdoms.
"I... I am going... Sujamal told in hurry. "You both practice, I will join later. And he went out like a storm. "Bhaisa wait for me!! Jodha ran behind him in worry. Suryabaan stared at her blank for a while, then followed her.
...
"IF YOU LOVE YOUR LIFE THEN TELL THE TRUTH!!! Vijay shouted in rage while strangling the trembling frightened slender man hanging in the wall of prison with chains. The man had been tortured beyond limit, still he is not ready to change his statement. Now his first statement seems to be true to Vijay. And the man himself does not look like anything better than a horse-thief anyway.
"TELL ME! Still Vijay tried for last.
"I... I am t..tt...telling truth... b..b..believe me... The slender man again started crying. "I...I stole the horse... I... I... don't know anything... about... about that mark... or... that sword... or those...
"From where did you get the horse? TELL OR I WILL BEHEAD YOU AT ONCE!
"I... I swear... I found that fastened near the broken temple with a rope. It was grazing and none was near... I... I thought it is a good horse and I will get good price. And also I found the belongings with the horse costly... so... The man sobbed. "Due to the fire the state of the market was not good so I did not try to sell that then. Today only I took that to market but...
"When did you find that?
"The day of Dashera... That night only the fire broke out...
"ARE YOU SURE YOU ARE TELLING TRUTH??
"Yes... yes...
Vijay stood steel for some moments. He was able to find a connection. A very thin, almost invisible connection, but when he made the connection it blew up his heart!
"Samar you take the charge. He shouted to his colleague. "I need to meet Kunwar Sujamal now!!
...
Sujamal stormed inside the stable where the horse was kept. Behind him was Jodha, her heart shivering in unknown worry. Sujamal examined the horse carefully, scrutinized the mark of forehead and the saddle seats properly. His frown grew deeper and deeper.
"And what other belongings did you get from its owner?
"Here are they Kunwarsa! One soldier came with something in his hands. There was a chain of valuable pearl, two priceless rings, a pouch of Mughal gold coins, a designed and embellished cover of a dagger, and... and a sword.
A sword which is very much known to Jodha!
Jodha's heart skipped beating again. She became pale in an unknown fright!
"Look Jodha! Sujamal found Jodha nearby to share his thoughts and started speaking. "Look at the design of the cover of this dagger. One can easily tell that the user of this one belongs to a highly esteemed Mughal family! And look at these rings! Look at these coins!! Jodha! Some Mughal spy is here in our Amer!
Jodha felt the whole sky has fallen on her head! She could not overlook the worst possibility which was coming in her mind.
"Kunwarsa! Just now it has been known that the man whom we arrested was only a thief. He had found the horse tied near of the abandoned temple outside the fort and hence stole it. He has no relation with this horse. The spy is still here!
Jodha felt she will faint now. But she still had to keep her calm, to act as if nothing has happened!
"My horse has been stolen...And my sword was on the back of the horse.
Controlling herself with difficulty, she went to the horse. Yes, she can remember the horse she had seen that night when she had a duel with Chandra! In darkness she could not see the mark of the horse, but she had recognized the type. And this horse looks exactly the same!
She took a vivid look in the sword. It is too tough to deny that the sword does not belong to him.
Then she took the cover of the dagger in her hand. She remembers the rusted dagger of Chandrajeet which he demanded to get as a gift from the emperor. That dagger would be an exact fit to this cover. The hilt of that one has a perfect match with this!
And the rings, the pearl chain, and the pouch of coins- so many gold Asarfis... And he told that he was here for finding a better workplace...
He lied! He lied from first to last! He lied! He is not a poor vagabond Chandrajeet Rathore! He is enemy... he is enemy... he is enemy!!
"Jodha! Jodha!
"Haah?? Jodha forcefully came back in reality to respond Sujamal.
"Where are you lost? What did you recon? Sujamal asked. "I am horrified! A Mughal spy is so close of Amer, maybe he is still nearby at Amer?
Jodha told nothing, tiredly she kept everything on the saddle of the horse.
He cheated! He cheated Jodha! Chandrajeet Rathore cheated his Purnima!
"Kunwarsa! Some guard came up. "Vijay Singh wants a meeting in hurry. He has got to know something.
"I am coming! Sujamal turned at Jodha. "Jodha, you stay here and look after this horse, I will get back to you.
They left, leaving Jodha alone... with the horse, with all the belongings of that mysterious man!
Mysterious he was! Logically Jodha could never believe him-if only, if only she would ponder over her doubts! If only she would not believe him!
How foolish she had been!
Jodha felt for once she will break down in crying to free the burden of heart. But it was too tough!
She took one moment to decide. Then slowly she got onto the horse and loosed the rope with which it was fastened. The free horse neighed in happiness and started to run. Jodha directed it outside the fort, to the abandoned temple.
Everything is going to finish, but before that she needs clarification!
