Chapter 32
The future is written.
Author's note:- There are a few mistakes that in my inexperience and zeal I have committed here. My dear readers though I have made a conscious effort not to make a mockery of any system or process be it medical, police, judiciary, or business management. I have tried to do research before putting any information here so as to keep things in logical perspective, but yet please take it with a bit salt if it appears wrong. In my zeal, I have actually gone and used some very real names like Ford America, Tata cancer research center and hospital, The Leela and Jamavar and maybe a few more. It was not an intentional mistake and to stay very much in fictional zone These name will from now on be:-
Tata Cancer Research Center and Hospital--- Vardhan cancer research Center of India
Ford America... Scord Motors Ltd.
Anika along with two other research associates was standing in the corridors of the The National cancer research institute at the desk that was set up as a reception to guide the guests and corporate representatives to the conference room. Every guest was handed a meticulously laid out research report for reference just in case if they forgot to bring the copy they had been provided more than two months back. Dressed up in gray suit she looked as somber as the environment of this hospital usually is. Her heart paced unusually slow today, she looked at the clock on the front wall facing the corridor. There was yet 45 minutes for the conference to start.
"Kabhi kabhi samay kaatey nahi katata.
"Dr Anika aap itna serious kyoun le rahi hai yeh sab. aapne apna 100 percent diya is research ko. That should be all that matters. One of her colleagues tried to reason with her. She just nodded, not bothering to answer back as there was nothing to say. Just then she felt a weird feeling of familiarity creep into her entire body. As if something calmed her stressed nerves, the anticipation and tension in the air were suddenly sucked out and replaced with a freshness that belonged to valleys and mountains. In Delhi their college was close to the cemetery and whenever Anika felt uneasy or stressed she used to visit that. The burning pyres always reminded her that nothing was permanent and somehow she felt at ease. It was strange that a place and occurrence that filled people with despair, grief and fear, instilled her with hope. There was this huge Plumeria tree there, people said that tree was the farewell tree. Whenever she stood under it, she felt the white flowers with their mild fragrance bid adieu to her fears and she instantly experienced hope. Taking a deep breath to recall the fragrance of those plumeria flowers, Anika looked up to see Tej uncle standing with his unwanted nephew. She wanted to smack her head with something solid. Just now she had breathed in some semblance of relief and his very gray glare robbed her of that breath. She looked at Rohit a fellow research associate for help and he gladly obliged. Who did not know Shivay singh Oberoi? Some actually believed that a few minutes in close proximity of this young business prodigy could, maybe enhance their intellect. Rohit was no different like a child in front of candy store started stuttering and stammering and trying to make sense. Shivay the graceful one, indulged the young lad probably just a few years his junior like the benevolent master, thereby winning himself an admirer for life. Anika was busy talking to Tej but she could sense Shivay's invisible anger and irritation dart towards her even though he did not care to look at her anymore. Suddenly everything started looking even grayer. Shivay swallowed hard to curb his rising anger and then left for the conference room with Tej. That girl did not even care to acknowledge acquaintance to him. Shivay was never ignored by anyone, never, and he pledged in that moment that he will make Anika acknowledge him every conscious and unconscious second of her life henceforth, for her entire life. How dare that girl to have the audacity to look beyond him?
Anika followed Tej and Shivay as it was only 15 minutes to the conference and she had to see to it that all the Invitees were duly seated. There were a few guests who had accompanied the invites. All the places were pre-marked with the name of the representative and their company. The doctors were not notified earlier that Shivay would be joining them hence there was no place marked in his name. She entered the conference before him and took a place card to write his name and make a place for him on the left of the founder of this research center Mr. Jayant Vardhan, Chairman Emeritus of the Vardhan Conglomerate a 110-year-old business house. Jayant Vardhan was revered as a living legend, a philanthropist, an astute businessman. Vardhan group was actually the foundation of India's story of success. Tej's seat was next to Shivay.
"I hope aap yahan comfortable honge Mr. Oberoi."
She said making a place for a chair and subsequently looking for a pen to write Shivay's name. In this digital era, pens were swiftly becoming extinct. Shivay gave her his pen. She looked at him and asked him to spell Shivay for her. Just then Dr. Dhawan entered with Mr. Jayant Vardhan. He moved for a round of personal introduction with everyone. She became nervous and Shivay took the place card from her to write his name himself. He was royally pissed now though intrinsically super pleased to sit next to The Jayant Vardhan. He rarely met with people he was actually a recluse. Dr. Dhawan chose that moment to approach Anika,
"Anika you have double checked the projector and we have one as stand by.
Shivay's mind probably got connected with Dr. Dhawan for a second and instead of writing Shivay Singh Oberoi he wrote Anika Shivay Singh Oberoi that too with the pen that belonged to his dadu. The pen with which he had signed all his contracts till date and none of them had ever been a source of loss. Probably he signed a contract with destiny today; only, he did not do it consciously this time.

Chapter 33
When reality strikes it hurts.
"Hallo Tej, Shivay, Wasn't expecting you here Shivay. Never thought you would be interested in medical research. Youngsters like you are more interested in instant profits and end results than in the process.
Mr. Vardhan held Shivay's gaze for a few seconds, Shivay's was dumbfounded. For the first time, he experienced the same anticipation and excitement that sometimes his juniors felt for him. He knew first-hand today how difficult it is to look into the eyes of someone you had respected and idolized all your life, and he literally discards you, because that is exactly what had happened.
"It is not so sir while I will agree I am not into the field medical research but technology is still something I have invested my self in personally and professionally.
Shivay did try to make a comeback.
"I know that is why I said instant, technology gives instant throwbacks whereas research in life sciences is not that lucrative or thrilling, and far less profitable.
"Touche' but I am here now, even though I will have to accept I was literally coerced into it by badey papa.
Shivay retreated, after all he was talking to one of the greatest personality of current times. It was as if his presence had charged the air around and he felt priviledged to be breathing the same air he breathed.
"I am glad you are here. I hope we will see some input from you. People like you can bring about change.
Samar and Raghav approached them before Shivay could respond to him.
"Sir we are ready to start when you are, Raghav said.
"Lets not waste time then.
Mr Vardhan said passing the Oberois an acknowledging nod and a smile before moving to his allotted seat. The opening comments to the conference were given by Mr. Vardhan where he talked about how encouraging it was to see and experience young India right in front of him in that room. More than three-fourths of the room was occupied by executives under 45. He said he was pleased to see the baton being passed to the younger generation, which had vision, courage, and desire to bring about a change. Shivay noticed that he looked straight towards him when he said the word change. For a second he felt inadequate to bear such burden of expectation. He had never done anything without a thought of profit. His version of good Karma did not go beyond his family. He had never actually given a thought to the importance of Business and industry to the Indian society in general. For the first time, he felt dwarfed.
Once Ragahv took over the presentation it became absolutely, a talk about figure and actual expectation from the research. Shivay had suddenly taken keen interest in every single number that was thrown at him. He suddenly was the one to ask most questions about where they thought the research would be in next ten years. He was shocked to know that in the event of no cure achieved they were looking at a very bleak 5 year extension to life of the patient with this most aggressive kind of cancer.
"Five years is not even a decade. It means nothing He spoke as a mater of fact.
"To a patient who has more or less 24 months that too most of it, with aggressively deteriorating life quality five years is a life time. Samar replied trying to keep his tone from shaking.
"The life quality?
"Much better than what it is projected now answered Dr, Dhawan.
"How many more researches are going on on this subject and what are their predictions? This was Daksh Khurana CEO of Curtz pharmaceuticals. This corporation was the distributor of many cancer medicines in India in collaboration with foreign firms. Daksh was a ruthlessly profit oriented business man his world had thrived on this disease called cancer. Shivay looked straight at him and in that moment he noticed Daksh was looking at someone in a very peculiar way. When Shivay followed his gaze it ended at Anika sitting next to a laptop changing slides for the presentation and oblivious of the world around her. Her face clearly showed the hopelessness that she was feeling at this moment. Shivay felt something cracking within, he could not put his finger whether it was on seeing a nearly defeated Anika or on seeing a person like Daksha lusting after her that too when she was vulnerable.
Daksh was notorious for his crooked ways with every thing that crossed his path especially women. Once this question was answered he had few others but Shivay noticed his gaze was still stuck at a very morose Anika.
"So we do have a competition in the form of this research going on in Germany. The relevance of this research will rest on the fact that it preceeds German research, that too by atleast 7-10 years for any investor to recover the cost, that is if we stay in your projected cost of trial.
He sounded like he was already trashing the idea and his words were going to definitely influence others here. Afterall he was a pharma Giant in India. Anika opened her mouth to inhale and then exhaled. Shivay could feel her trepidation and anxiety at a very personal level he wanted to console her.
"The German reaserch is far behind clinical trial phase so if all goes well we will be atleast ahead by 4-6 years from them. Said Raghav
"That does not allow us the time to recover the millions needed to be invested. This is the problem with cancer research it becomes obsolete very quickly. Daksh Reiterated.
"The figures that I see here don't conform to your statement. The current primary chemo medicine used is Temozolomide which has been around since 2000 so nearly for twodecades. The only other two medicines that showed some promise have failed to add any survival benefits to the patient. So I do not see that extra short life of cancer drugs you mentioned here Daksh.
This was Shivay and Daksh was forced to avert his gaze towards those steely freezing ones. Shivay had grabbed Anika's attention. She could not believe that this Kanji Ankh was tilting in favor of this research. She knew if Oberoi could come aboard then with Vardhan's and Oberoi's this research would see it's a safe conclusion. She had studied enough about Oberois to be sure.
"We are talking about medicines here, not cars or petrol Mr. Oberoi.
A slight curve on her lips was suddenly ripped away by Daksha's fake tone. Shivay suddenly felt like the room became darker. He had suddenly hoped to see her smile. Suddenly to him her appreciation mattered. Suddenly to him her face so gloomy spelt gloom every where. He wanted to change it all.
"I know what we are talking about.
Shivay said to Daksh in a tone telling him to mess only if he wanted to endure his fury. The animosity between the two was now out in open not that it had ever been hidden. Yes they had been sworn enemies for quite some time now. Shivay averted his gaze from Anika to Daksha when he felt a hand rest on his palm and looked in that direction. It was Mr. Vardhan who gestured him not to turn this conference in yours versus mine. Shivay took a step back immediately; he was one who was brought up to respect elders. In the core of the art of business management rested some principles one being to understand one's boundaries. Shivay not only understood and acknowledged them but also never transgressed them, though Anika was an exception to his rule of respecting boundaries. Somehow with her he feels compelled to break them.
The conference ended with a short video which contained the biography of the doctors who had dared to take lead in this research and trial which they knew had little future. While Shivay had expected Dr Dhawan, Samar and a few others to be on the video he was beyond stunned to see her name come right at the end of the Video. He learned that she had coordinated, and supervised and documented the trials in National Medical Center Delhi. Every doctor had recorded a phrase that they believed in; most of them had done that either in their offices or in the hospital with their patients. She chose to stand under the plumeria tree in a Ghat with a burning funeral pyre in the background. Shivay was struck at many levels by what he saw. The video was raw as if a phone footage and it did press some raw nerve in him, the conference ended with her words.
"This is the inevitable end, for some it comes far too soon. Kash hum isse badal patey.

Chapter 34
The aftermath
There was refreshment arranged for the Research associates, doctors and the corporate representatives. Everyone started to move towards the refreshment room. When Shivay heard Mr. Vardhan call his name,
As Shivay was about to walk out he happened to glance at the place card and-and before his mind could comprehend his hand acted and he shoved that damned thing into his pocket. He looked all around to see if any one happened to watch him. He was red with fury, desire, or embarrassment only he could tell, but if you ask me I think it was a mix of all three.
Anika was walking up to Mr. Vardhan as she had yet not met him in person today.
"How are you, Anika?
"I am good sir.
"Oh, you are under appraising your self. You are not good you are excellent. Dr. Dhawan has requested for you to join here if we manage to continue with this research but I told him research or not you will be joining here.
Shivay was once again surprised to see that she was at personal terms with Mr. Vardhan. What happened next pulled the ground from not only under his feet but Anika's too.
"Any which way this would suit you best as you will be living in Mumbai in future.
Jayant saw Tej approaching towards them so he addressed him.
"Tej I now know what brought Shivay here today, I hope you will not forget to invite this old man to their wedding pretty soon. Your nephew appears to be so smitten by her that he had the place card with her name, very unlike you Shivay.
It appeared as if on Shivay red color had been liberally sprinkled. This was super embarrassing, he felt as if the world was coming to an end. Tej looked at Shivay bewildered and curious and then at Anika who's was looking not only shocked but was unable to breathe. She suddenly found the grout in between the floor tiles excessively interesting.
"Kuch bolo moorti ban ke kya khadi ho. Shivay tried to be inaudible.
"A...abb...maine place cards lagaye they sir ...it...it was just a mistake...I didn't mean any thing...ais a kuch ...kuch bhi nahi hai jo aap soch rahey hain.
She tried to make some sense.
"She is absolutely right. They are not seeing each other, though you must expect an invitation for his wedding very soon but to Tia Kapoor if you know. We have still not announced their relationship but we will soon formally announce it.
The name Tia Kapoor being associated with his name kind of suffocated Shivay and he looked at Anika who had very generously taken the blame of this carelessness on herself. Had someone else noticed it, she would have become a laughing stock. Both Tej and Vardhan moved towards the lobby for refreshments.
"Agar yehi galti maine ki hoti to meri upbringing ki dhajjiyan uda rahey hotey. Itne khidkitod industrialist hain aap aur itni careless blunder mistake Shivay felt his hair stand at attention because of her grossly wrong english.
"Shhh...It's not careless blunder mistake, say either blunder or careless mistake.
He tried to correct her.
"Aap theek hain? Pata nahi kisne kisne yeh dekha hoga kal ko sab damru baja baja ke mera Mazak udaiyenge, aur aapko meri angrezi se michmichi ho rahi hai? Aap insaan hain ya pajama wo bhi khaddar ka nahi wo Mahatma Gandhi ka banaya hua hai aap pajama hai chaddar ka?
"Stop it , bolna shuru karti ho to jet speed mein, jheltey kaisey hain tumko patients. Tumhari vajah se hi unka dimag kharab ho jaye. kissi ne nahi dekha hai aur mera naam tumhare saath juda na to tumhari izzat char aur chaand lag jayeinge. Phir haath pe latka ken ahi ghoomne pareinge yeh chaand. Mazak udega udega nahi tum khud Mazak ho. Tumhe yaad dila doon main Shivay singh Oberoi hoon, koi sadak pe khada street side Romeo nahi samjhi.
He had tried to keep his tone low but by the end of his verbal assault he became pretty loud though for their benefit only Shivay and Anika were left in that room.
"Thank you but no thanks aapke naam or chand dono ke liye. Main apne haath pe tange chand se bahut happy hoon, santusht, satisfied hoon. Nahi chahiye aur chand. In teen dino mein aapki vajah se meri life mein uthal puthal mach gayi hai. Jeena mushkil ho gaya hai jeena to chodo chalna tak mushkil ho gaya hai.
"Arrey giri tum apni vajah se main tumhe hospital leke gaya meri bechari ma tumhari chinta mein mari ja rahi hai. Subah se 6 mssgs kar chuki hain ki tumk o yaad dila doon ki is pair ki dressing honi hai aur tum itni ungrateful ho ki instead thanking me you are blaming that injury on me.
"Mujhey pata hai ki aapne hi us din mere kamre ki light band ki hogi. Aap khud ko wo cake samajhtey hain jo pastry ki dukaan mein show case mein rakha hota hai aur mujhey wo makkhi jo uspe bhinbhinati hai. Issiliye aapko mujhey dekhtey hi michmichi aati hai. Aur mujhey pata nahi itne acche ghar mein aap jaisa sadu kaise paida ho gaya aapki mummy such a sweet lady ek aap hai Sadu Singh Oberoi.
"Tum jaise log can only talk and do theatrics like speaking infront of a funeral pyre. Did you even know the name of the person who was reduced to ashes there? You and your gimmics, I am warning you Anika...
The look on Anika's face was grave enough to tell Shivay that she knew the person well and he bit his tongue but it was too late as Anika had grabbed the water bottle on the table and splashed him with water again. Shivay in a state of uncontrolled fury pulled her by her right hand and twisted it behind her. In an attempt to balance her self she held onto his coat lapel with her free hand. Both glared into each other's eyes undeterred and unafraid, their breathing ragged with fury, they gasped in anger. Shivay twisted her hand further trying to cause pain and scare her but she being Anika who never gave into bullying continued to look into his eye un-flinched and unfazed. She dug her nails into his neck drawing blood. If he would have twisted her arm any further she was sure to have a couple bones in pieces and if she continued with her assault he would be a fountain spouting his own blood. This all happened in a blink and Samar was the witness and to him it was unbelievable. He rushed to Anika's defense.
"Shivay! Have you lost your mind! The pyre belonged to my class fellow one who was working on this research with us and his father figure. He was Dr. Dhawan's nephew and only thirty three years old. He passed away twenty days back and that was not a theatric, she had actually said that to one of our friends who had by chance recorded it. That is why it looked unprofessional and raw. Samar who came looking for Anika saw them involved not only in a verbal spat but a physical one too.
"Anika tumhe sir bula rahey hain jao yahan se Samar said trying to take them away from each other.
"Wo place card mujhey de dijiye Mr. Oberoi varna mujhse bura koinahi hoga Instead of answering he left the room to find his uncle and leave this place and Anika's company. He hated himself every time he came near her for she managed to bring out the ogre in him.
"Mujhey wo place card card chahiye Samar sir.
"Kya ho gaya hai tumko Anika? Pagal ho gayi ho kya? Kya kya boley jaa raho thi? Ho kya jaata hai tumko Shivay ko dekhtey hi? You behave like a teenager whose hormones are haywire."
Samar dragged her away for some refreshments. She was seething with rage. She despised Shivay to the core that man could really bring out the fiend in her.

Chapter 35
When tempers flare
On his way to office, he broke his car's rearview mirror and on being reprimanded by Tej he did not care to respond. It was getting very difficult for Tej to control his laughter. No one had ever been able to get under the Great Shivay Singh Oberoi the way Anika had.
"Shivay I have known Anika for quite some time now. She is not that silly that she would write her name with yours on a place card. I think it was some one's mischief. Shivay could clearly see his badey papa hide his smirk in that Rana Pratap type mustache. He was beyond irritated now. Shivay stormed into Om's office, on the executive floor of Oberoi headquarters but only after breaking the mirror in the lift and vase in the gallery and his personal assistant Sanvi's organizer wiping out the smile that she held with a huge amount of courage on her face. Poor thing was just trying to brush him up on the details of meetings he had to attend. She stood there trying to understand her boss's mood swings and to pick up the pieces of her broken organizer. These past three days had been especially difficult not that others had been easy. Working with Shivay had his perks but it had more penalties. Sanvi was actually very young hardly 22 she was still doing CS and this was her way to pay off for her education and her fashion. When she had taken this job as an associate personal assistant after being selected from 100s of candidates, she felt like the chosen one. When in good mood Shivay was always soft and courteous towards her, he would also let her go home early, but such days were few and far in between. Shivay when in his neutral mindset and more focused on work, was nothing short of a robot. He never smiled, only ordered for things that needed to be done, not that he screamed but his tone was mostly very flat and unflattering. He nitpicked every job done by her, the harder she was trying, worse her mistakes were getting. If not for Om and Rudra she would not have lasted an hour with Shivay. Shivay when seething with rage like today was any one's nightmare and unfortunately Sanvi never got premonitions about his mood like other employees did and intelligently refrained from crossing paths him, she inadvertently always had to fall in the line of fire.
"I am going to personally strangulate that girl, I am telling you, Om.
Shivay entered Om's office bellowing in anger.
"What has that poor girl done? She has been quietly filing away all the morning. Let her live bro.
"Filing away? Exactly what was she filing away? She is so uncivilized, uncouth and absolutely disgusting.
"Shivay what has she done?
"She once again splashed water at me.
He so wanted to show those hurtful nail marks that he was sure were now gracing his neck but were hidden under his coat collar or so he hoped. They were burning and he was desperately in need of some ice.
"Sanvi splashed water on your face!
"Kya ho gaya O' looks like hurricane visited us.
Rudra entered trying not to step at the broken shards of glass and a tray and a pen stand now lying scattered in Om's office. As soon as Shivay picked up the heavy paper weight and was about to smash their window with it, Rudra and Om intervened and stopped him.
"Arrey Bahiya Bas, Stop, kya ho gaya hai?
Om briskly took away the paper weight and Rudra held on to a raging Shivay. Tej had heard all the commotion from outside. He knew he was not needed there as three of them together could manage each other very well. He went to Sanvi who had also heard all the accusations about being uncouth and uncivilized.
"Sir I have not done anything. She was nearly in tears.
"He is not talking about you. Tej no longer bothered to control his laghter and left for his own office.
"Saanvi nahi Anika! Sanvi kahan se aagayi beech mein?
Shivay roared once again and Sanvi slumped into her chair breaking down into tears.
"Oh to tu Anika ke bare mein bol raha tha?
Om now looked at Rudra.
"What is wrong with you bhaiya why do enter into a brawl with her? I mean she is just a girl let her be. Aap to peeche hi par gaye hai Anika di ke.
Shivay looked at Rudra as if suddenly he had grown two horns on his head.
"Main kyoun peeche paroonga uske she is not my class. Mujhey aur koi kaam nahi hai kya? She is such a classless girl. Wo kabhi municipality ke taps par ladies chikti chillati hain na wo vaise baat karti hai. Her voice makes me feel like when you hear your nail scratching the wall. Oh God give some cold water Rudy. Shivay slumped into the couch there tired and exhausted.
