Chapter 45 - An Ugly Confrontation
Recap (because it's been so long 🤔 ): Preet drops Meher off at Sam's house. A short while later Lalit and Daljeet show up. Meher thinks it's Preet, who had been returning again and again to tease her. She opens the door and playfully throws a glass of water out, only to find Lalit Juneja not Preet standing there.
Lalit Juneja passed a hand over his wet face and glared back angrily at Meher. A surprised Daljeet Rampal stood beside him. "Meher! You crazy girl! Have you gone mad?!" she cried.
"Oh my God!" cried Meher. "Bauji...I mean...Lalit Sir...I mean...Mr. Juneja...I'm so sorry!" She took the towel she was holding in her hand and began to wipe Lalit's clothes with it.
"Give me that!" cried Lalit as he snatched the towel from her hand and used it to wipe his face.
"I'm so sorry," whispered Meher. "I had no idea it was you...I thought it was..." She paused mid sentence and bit her lower lip.
"Hmph! You absolutely will be sorry," said Daljeet, as she walked through the door and looked around. "Where are your parents?"
"They're not here...I mean...they've gone out for dinner," stammered Meher.
"Oh have they?" cried Daljeet. "Just wait until I get a hold of my sister. The ungrateful wretch. I come home and learn from the servants that your entire family has packed up and left the Rampal mansion. She didn't even have the decency to tell me, after all I've done for her...for you!" A feeling of dread washed over Meher as Daljeet glared at her with narrowing eyes. "I suppose you know why I'm here?" she continued without waiting for a reply. "Viren called. He told me you called off your engagement for no good reason. What the hell is going on Meher?!"
"He's lying. Woh...main...uh...you see...," stammered Meher. "We got into an argument and..."
"And so you called off the engagement?" scoffed Daljeet. "Ha! People have disagreements all the time, but that doesn't mean we cut off ties with them!"
"This was different," said Meher.
"How so?" demanded Daljeet.
Viren had hit on her, but she was too embarrassed to say this in front of Preet's father. Meher looked from Lalit to Daljeet, then stared at the floor. "I'd rather not say."
"Well you're going to have to say something young lady, because I am not going to leave here without an explanation for your actions," Daljeet insisted. "Do you have any idea what kind of an opportunity you walked out on? You and Viren could be settled in America. Do you have any idea how many people would kill for such a chance?"
"And do you know that Viren has a child with another woman?" asked Meher.
"Hmm...Viren did mention that. But...so? So what?" Daljeet shrugged her shoulders. "Your own father was a widower with a child and my sister still married him."
"That was different," said Meher. "My father had been married. He owned up to his responsibilities not hid from them."
"Oh come on Meher," sighed Daljeet. "That was then, this is now. It's not uncommon these day for young men to have played the field before marriage. Maybe even sowed a few oats. You'll have to get over it. As for the child, it's not like anyone expects you to be a mother to him. Viren assured me, once you two are settled in the U.S., you won't even know the boy exists."
Meher took a deep breath. "With all due respect Mrs. Rampal," she began. "I have no interest in depriving Rahul of his father. I have no interest in settling abroad. Nor do I don't think Viren and I are right for one another."
"Then who is?" Lalit spoke up.
"Ji?" whispered Meher.
"Who exactly do you think is right for you?" replied Lalit. "It wouldn't be Preet by any chance would it?"
Meher looked up at Lalit in surprise.
"Preet!" cried Ashlesha, as she rushed into the house that very moment and looked around. "Preet! Where are you?" She looked at Meher. "Where is he? Where is Preet? I know he's here, so there is no use hiding him."
Meher thanked her lucky stars that Preet had left. "You're wrong Ashlesha," she shook her head. "There is no one here but me."
"But Preet was with you earlier today wasn't he?" demanded Ashelsha. She turned to Lalit and Daljeet. "I saw the 2 of them together. I swear I did."
"Of course you did sweetheart," Daljeet tried to soothe her daughter by passing her hand over her head, but Ashlesha pushed it away.
"Preet and I had dinner together," Meher tried to explain. "Sam and Gaurav were there too. We were just hanging out."
"Hanging out, or celebrating your new found freedom?" Ashlesha asked pointedly. "You got rid of your fiance. How convenient that mine was available to wine and dine you in his place. No wonder he doesn't have time for me, he's always by your side. And we were so in love..."
What a liar! thought Meher.
"No matter how much Mom warned me to keep my distance from you, I always considered you a friend," continued Ashlesha. "In fact, I always defended you. Meher is my friend, I would say. Meher is a good girl. Meher is engaged to Viren. Meher doesn't know the first thing about playing games or being deceptive. But all this time you were cozying up to Preet behind my back. That was your game plan, wasn't it Meher? Play the part of the innocent friend, then use your charms to work your way into my fiance's heart. How could you Meher? You betrayed me. Iss bholi bhali surat ke peeche ek aasteen ka saap chupa hua tha (Behind this mask of innocence was a wolf in sheep's clothing)!"
"Bas karo (enough) Ashelsha!" Meher blurted out. "Main yahan chup khadi hoon, iska matlab yeh nahin ke soche samjhe beghair, jo moon main aa raha hai bolti jao (My standing here quietly doesn't give you the right to say whatever comes into your mouth). You know very well Preet doesn't love you?"
"Yes he does...," replied Ashlesha.
Meher looked at her with a raised brow.
"Um...uh...and even if he doesn't...so what?" stammered Ashlesha. "Were you in love with Viren? No, right? If you could agree to marry him, because it made your parents happy or gave you a secure future, why can't I? I admit Preet and my marriage is a business arrangement. It happens all the time in rich families. We could have made it work." She brought her hands up to her face and began to cry.
"What do you mean could have?" Daljeet patted her shoulder and tried to calm her down. "Of course you 2 will make it work."
"But mom...," sobbed Ashlesha. "...what if Meher..."
"Meher is of little consequence to us," Daljeet reassured her. "Preet will do as his father wills." She threw an angry look at Meher. "You insolent ungrateful girl! How dare you upset my little princess?! I ought to wring your neck!"
"Daljeet...calm yourself," sighed Lalit. He had been standing quietly on the side all this time. "Why don't you and Ashlehsa go get some fresh air, while I have a word with Ms. Maan?" he suggested.
"Whatever! I'd rather not share any breathing space with little Miss 2-timing Meher anyway," Ashlesha threw Meher a disgusted look and stormed out of the house.
"Daljeet?" Lalit motioned towards the door.
"Don't mind Prah-ji, but I'm not going anywhere," Daljeet said adamantly. "My daughter's future is at stake here. I believe I have the right to know what you're going to say."
"Suit yourself," sighed Lalit. He turned and faced Meher. With eyes narrowing as if honing in on a prey, he studied her carefully for a minute "Time is money young lady, so I'll get straight to the point. Preet didn't come home last night. He was with you wasn't he?"
"What?!" cried Daljeet as Meher's face turned red.
"He called home this morning and asked for a replacement vehicle because his car had broken down," explained Lalit. "The driver that brought his car back informed me that a young lady of your description was with him, so don't bother denying it."
Meher didn't know what to say.
"Hmph! Her silence is guilt enough, don't you think?" said Daljeet.
"Guilt? I don't know what you're implying," said Meher. "I was stuck without a ride. Preet was just trying to help..."
"Correction Meher...you were trying to help yourself to my son," Lalit interrupted her. "I know what you're thinking. I don't even know you, so how can I judge you? Oh but I know very well what young women like you are all about. I have 3 sons. There have always been young women with ulterior motives running around after them. We have had to be very careful who we allowed and disallowed into our family. My youngest son unfortunately, has never been wise enough to be able to discern what is good or bad for him. He is also too trusting of people. Tum uski yehi masoomiyat ka faidah utha rahi ho (You're trying to use this to your advantage)." Meher opened her mouth as if to say something, but he raised a hand and stopped her. "Tumhe kya laga, Preet Ashlesha jaisi khandani ladki ka haath chod ke tumhara haath thamna chahe ga aur main chup chap tamasha dekhoon ga (What did you think, Preet would choose you over a girl from an elite family like Ashlesha and I'd stand on the sidelines and do nothing)? Who are you? Kya tum hamare khandan ki bahu bane ke laik ho (Are you worthy enough to become my daughter in law)? What is your family's status? Koi match hai tumhara aur humara (Do we even match)? No! You're not good enough for my son. You're just a cheap imitation of what he could have if he set his aims higher. Preet maybe a fool and fall for your charms, but know this young lady...his father is very much alive! And I will not allow you to take advantage of him or ruin his future or the future of this family!"
Meher tried to blink back the tears forming in her eyes. How could Mr. Juneja think so low of her? I'm not going to cry in front of him, she tried to steel her nerves. He may be Preet's father, but he didn't deserve to see how his words had cut into her. "Mr. Juneja, she said calmly. "I would never do anything to hurt Preet or your family." She bit her lip before proceeding. She had promised Preet she wouldn't tell anyone about his investigation into the Rampals, but if there was ever a time to let his father know about it, it was now. "In fact, it is the Rampals that are taking you for a ride."
"What?" Cried Daljeet. "What on earth are you talking about young lady?"
"I don't know all the details," said Meher. "But I know Preet and his brothers have been investigating them for some time now. In fact, Preet just cancelled a deal that would have hurt your business. The Rampals were behind it."
"Are you by any chance referring to the recent tender we submitted?" asked Lalit. "Do you think think Preet managed to cancel that deal on his own? Not at all. It was actually Rishap Rampal that alerted me to the fact that we were dealing with a dummy corporation."
Daljeet gave Meher a smug smile.
Flashback:
{At Veera's sangeet party}
Preet had just overheard Rishap and Daljeet talking about the Junejas investing in their dummy corporation. If they won the bid, they would lose their investment and surely be sued by their investors for fraud.
"He's gone," said Daljeet, as she peeked into the hallway after Preet left.
"Are you sure he heard us?" asked Rishap.
"He better have. We were talking loud enough," scoffed Daljeet. "I bet he thinks he's nailed us and went straight away to tell his brothers. Investigate us will he? The fool! We'll twist things around so fast he won't know what hit him."
"Meanwhile, Lalit will be so grateful we've pulled him out of a mess, he won't hesitate to set a date for Ashlesha's wedding," chuckled Rishap.
{End of Flashback}
Meher's mouth fell open in surprise. "But Preet said..."
"The dummy corporation belongs to Rampal Industries," admitted Daljeet. "It helps us to move capital around, take out our competitors, and for...uh...tax purposes."
More like tax evasion, thought Meher.
"I'm sure you have no knowledge of these things, but lots of companies have them," said Daljeet. "Of course when Rishap found out that the Junejas have submitted a tender to the company, not only did we inform Lalit Prah-ji right away, we also ordered the tender to be cancelled. Preet's meeting with our business associate was arranged. His easily pulling out of the contract...everything was arranged...by us. Really Meher. Our daughter's future is tied to the welfare of the Junejas. Why would we do anything at all to harm them?"
Meher was at a loss for words. Preet was wrong. He had no evidence against the Rampals. His father was not going to cancel his marriage to Ashlesha. And he was never going to accept her into their family. She was a fool to have let Preet convince her otherwise.
"You should be ashamed of yourself Meher for trying to lure away my daughter's fiance," Daljeet scolded her. "In fact, you should pack your bags and never show your face in Delhi again!"
"What good would that do?" said Lalit. "My son is a fool. He would only follow her."
"Well then what should we do?" Daljeet asked worriedly.
Lalit pulled out a checkbook and pen from his coat pocket. "Name your price," he told Meher.
"What?" Meher said in surprise.
"You heard me. Name your price," said Lalit. "I'll never let you have Preet, so what will it be instead? 1 lac, 5 lacs, 10 lacs? Do you even know how many zeroes are in a lac?"
"I don't need your money Mr. Juneja," said Meher.
"Oh...so you want me to think you truly love my son eh?" scoffed Lalit. He slipped his checkbook back into his pocket. "Fine. You said you would never do anything to hurt my son. If you are sincere, then prove it. Go away...do anything you have to...but get out of his life for good!"
Later...
Gaurav walked Sam to her door.
"I can't believe you ordered 2 desserts and still ate half of mine," complained Sam.
"Sorry about that, but when my sweet tooth acts up there is no stopping me," chuckled Gaurav.
"That's okay," said Sam. "But I hate the fact that you can eat everything in sight and not gain a single ounce." She poked him in the ribs. "Just look at that...you're skin and bones."
"Ow!" whined Gaurav.
"Hmm, that's funny," Sam remarked looking at the house. "Preet and Meher went home a while ago, but all the lights are off."
"Maybe Meher turned in early," suggested Gaurav. "Or maybe they decided to go somewhere and lost track of time. And if that is the case, then perhaps I can come in for a bit." He leaned towards Sam, but she pushed him away playfully.
"Ha Ha, very funny," she giggled. "My mom will be home anytime now from her kitty party. If she catches us being even remotely naughty, we'll be sitting in a mandap tomorrow."
"Really?" Gaurav smiled. He slid his arms around her waist and pulled her close. "Then I'm definitely ready to be caught."
"Gaurav!" cried Sam.
"I mean it Sam," sighed Gaurav. "All this waiting until you graduate is driving me nuts. I just want to be with you all the time."
"Me too, but you know what daddy said," said Sam
"I know, I know," sighed Gaurav. "You don't come from a large family. And you'll be the first one to graduate from college. So just a little longer...but I don't see why you can't continue studying after getting married."
Sam threw her arms around his neck. "I'll tell you what," she smiled. "My father will be back in town tomorrow night. I'll try to talk to him about this again. Deal?"
"Deal," smiled Gaurav. He leaned forward to give her a kiss, and in doing so made her lean back slightly against the door. It pushed open.
"What on earth?" Sam said in surprise. "Meher didn't even bother to lock the door. I wonder if everything is alright."
"We got rid of Viren, what could possibly go wrong after that?" asked Gaurav.
"I don't know, but it just isn't like Meher to be that careless," Sam said worriedly.
"Sam...you worry too much," said Gaurav. "She's had a terrific day and an even better evening. She's probably on cloud 9...and forgot to shut the door properly. Now...enough about Meher." He slid his arms around her waist, pulled her close again, and grinned. "Where were we?"
"Um...Gaurav...I'm sorry, I just can't focus right now," Sam said, as she pulled away from him. "I have to make sure Meher is alright."
"Sam wait...," Gaurav threw his hands up in the air.
"I'll make it up to you tomorrow, okay?" said Sam, as she headed inside the house. "You can come by for breakfast."
Moments later...
Sam ran up to Meher's room calling out for her friend. "Meher? Where are you?" She found the door slightly ajar but the lights turned off. "Meher?" Sam saw movement by the foot of the bed and turned the lights on. Meher was sitting on the floor, head down with her knees pulled up to her chest. Sam sat down next to her and put a reassuring hand on her arm. "Meher?"
Meher looked up at her best friend with red eyes and a tear streaked face. She immediately threw her arms around her neck and began to sob. Sam slowly stroked her back in an effort to calm her, but was growing nervous herself. "Meher, you're scaring me. The front door was unlocked. Are you alright?"
"Yes," Meher pulled away from Sam, gave her a weak smile and nodded. "I'm fine."
"Then why are you crying?" Sam asked with concern.
"I'm not," sniffled Meher.
"Yes you are," frowned Sam. "Did you and Preet have an argument? I tell you guys these days...one minute they're all lovey-dovey and the next minute..."
"No," Meher shook her head. "Preet and I did not have an argument."
"Then why are you so upset?" Sam asked again.
"I...uh...I don't know...I guess I'm just overwhelmed by everything that happened today," lied Meher.
"Oh, I get it," smiled Sam. "These are happy tears." She hugged her friend. "I'm so glad Gaurav and I could help you and Preet. And it just goes to show, good things happen to good people."
"Sam, if you don't mind, I'm suddenly feeling very tired," sighed Meher. "Can we talk in the morning?"
"Yeah sure," smiled Sam. She got up to leave. "Sweet dreams."
"Phutti kismet waloon ko sapne nahin dekhne chahiye (Ill-fated people like me shouldn't dare to dream)," muttered Meher.
Meanwhile...
"Heer Bhabi!" cried Preet as he walked into the Juneja Mansion. "I'm home! Heer Bhabi!"
"Preet Baba," a servant approached him. "Shall I put dinner on the table for you?"
"No, I already ate," said Preet. "Where's HB?"
"She went upstairs a short while ago," replied the servant.
"Thanks," said Preet. He promptly headed up stairs. "Heer Bhabi! Heer Bhabi!"
"Shhh!!" Heer hissed as she peered out of Chahat's room. "What are you trying to do wake up the dead? Do you have any idea how difficult it is to put Chahat to bed when Prem is away?"
"Oops...sorry Bhabi," whispered Preet. "Um...Can we talk?"
Heer nodded. She quietly stepped outside and closed the door behind her. "If this is about Bauji, I don't know where he went. But I am relieved that you got home before he did."
"What am I a teenager on a curfew?" Preet rolled his eyes.
"I told you na, Daljeet and Ashlesha stopped by," sighed Heer. "I don't know what they said to him, but Bauji wasn't the same after they left."
"Yeah well I can't do anything about that," said Preet. "But I do need to talk to you."
"Right," said Heer. She motioned across the hall. "We can go to my room."
"No Bhabi, not your room," Preet led her to a door at the very end of the hall and tapped on the door.
"Ma's room?" Heer asked in surprise. "Are you sure? You haven't been inside this room since you came back from Canada."
"Yes, I'm sure," nodded Preet.
"Okay," Heer shrugged her shoulders. She took out a bunch of keys, found the right one, and opened the door. "Here you go."
Preet walked into the room followed by Heer. Both looked around. Various pieces of furniture had been carefully covered by white sheets, but other than that everything looked clean and well maintained. Preet headed straight to a wall where a portrait of his mother hung, and placed his hands on the base of the frame. "Aaj main bauhat khush hoon (I'm very happy today) Bhabi. Ma isn't with us, but here in this room, I know I can be close to her. She would have been so happy when I told her the news."
"What news? asked Heer. "Mujhe bhi toh kuch batao (Tell me as well).
"She's free Bhabi," smiled Preet. "She's finally free."
"Who's free?" asked Heer.
"Meher," explained Preet. "She broke off her engagement with Viren. We're finally free to be with each other." He went on to give Heer all the details Gaurav and Sam had uncovered about Viren, as well as the fact that Meher had admitted to being in love with him. He looked over at her concerned filled face. "What's the matter Bhabi? I thought you'd be happy for me."
"I am...but Preet...Meher's broken engagement doesn't change the fact that you're still engaged to Ashesha," Heer cautioned him. "And what about Bauji? He thinks..."
"I know what he thinks, and it's not going to happen," said Preet. "There is no way I'm going to marry Ash. And once Prem Bhaiya comes back from his trip, I won't have to."
"What do you mean?" asked Heer.
"PB, Herman Bhai, and I have been investigating the Rampal's for fraud," explained Preet. "We lost so many contracts to them in such a short span of time that it seemed unlikely to be just a coincidence. We traced some of their activity to a dummy corporation they set up in London. Prem Bhaiya went to investigate and bring back evidence. The Rampals are no friends of ours Bhabi. And once we have evidence to support that, Bauji himself will call off this arranged marriage."
"So that's what Prem had been working on all those late nights," said Heer.
"Yes, Preet nodded. "I'm sorry we didn't tell you sooner Bhabi. It was my idea to keep as few people in the loop as possible. The last thing I needed was for you or Maya Bhabi to have a slip of the tongue moment in front of Bauji, and then he in turn tipping the Rampals off."
"Hmph! I would't have done that," Heer said sounding a bit miffed.
Preet laughed out loud and tweeked her cheeks. "Aw! Meri cute si bhabi (my cute little bhabi). Don't be upset. It's not good for the baby."
"I'm not upset...I'm just saying you could have trusted me," Heer said with a pout.
"I do trust you," smiled Preet. "And so did Ma. Speaking of whom...Bhabi...I'd like to have her ring."
"You mean the ring?" Heer asked, as her eyes grew wide in delight.
Preet nodded and smiled shyly. "I want to propose to Meher. I know I've done so already several times, but this time I want to make it special. Ma meant the world to me. I want to show Meher how much she means to me too. I want her to know, she's the girl I want to see wearing my mother's ring for the rest of my life."
"I never thought I'd see the day you'd ask me for that ring until I met Meher," smiled Heer. "I've said it before, and I'll say it again, that girl is a keeper. I'm so happy for you Preet." She ruffled his hair playfully. "I'll go get the ring, right away."
The next morning...
Preet and Gaurav ran into each other outside Sam's gate.
"Hey Preet, what are you doing here?" asked Gaurav.
"The love of my life lives here, remember?" Preet reminded him.
"Mine too," sighed Gaurav. He looked his friend over. He was smiling way too much. "What do you have up your sleeve Preet?"
"What are you talking about?" Preet asked innocently as they started walking up the driveway to the house.
"I mean, it's way too early for you to be this happy," said Gaurav.
Preet paused, took a deep breath, and then pulled out a small ring box from his pant pocket. He opened the box and showed Gaurav what was inside.
"Wow!" whistled Gaurav. "That's a beauty."
"It belonged to Ma," smiled Preet.
"And now you're going to give it to Meher...not bad," said Gaurav. He pretended to give Preet an annoyed look and poked him with his finger. "No wonder my girl is more interested in your love life than ours."
"What?" chuckled Preet.
"Last night...when I dropped Sam off," explained Gaurav. "She was in such a rush to talk to Meher, forget about giving me a kiss...she slammed the door on my face. And when she sees that ring...forget it! I just can't compete. You're bad news for my love life bro."
"Aww...so you want me to kiss you goodnight?" Preet jokingly tugged at his collar. "Chal aa (come)...
"Ha Ha! Very funny," said Gaurav, as he pushed Preet away.
"So...uh...why did Sam want to talk to Meher?" asked Preet. "They were talking non-stop at dinner."
"You know how it is with girls...especially if they're best friends," replied Gaurav. "Besides, when we came home the front door was unlocked and..."
"Wait...the door was unlocked?" Preet grew concerned. "Was Meher okay?"
"Yeah, I guess," Gaurav shrugged his shoulders. "I mean, to be honest I was a little upset and left. But if anything was wrong Sam would definitely have called me back."
"Yeah, I suppose you're right," nodded Preet.
"Anyway, I'm going to make her pay and demand a full on lavish breakfast," smiled Gaurav. "Eggs, pancakes, waffles, fresh squeezed juice...parathe...the works." They reached the front door and he rang the bell.
Sam opened the door almost immediately. "Gaurav!" she said. "What are you doing here? And you brought Preet with you."
"You told me to come over for breakfast, remember?" said Gaurav.
"I did?" said Sam. "Heh-Heh...funny I don't remember having done so."
"And Preet came to see Meher," continued Gaurav. "We can all have breakfast together. The more the merrier, right?" Sam only gave him a weak smile in reply. "Aren't you going to let us in?"
"Yeah, I can't wait to see Meher," said Preet. He reached inside his pant pocket, felt the little jewelry box with his mother's ring and smiled to himself.
"No...not a good idea...in fact it's a bad idea," Sam shook her head at Preet. "I mean...you don't want to see Meher. D-d-didn't you 2 already spend so much time together yesterday and the night before? Over kill is not good, you know. Space...you need to give each other some space before you grow tired of each other, right Gaurav?" She began to make strange eye signals at Gaurav.
"What on earth are you talking about Sam?" said Preet.
"Yeah, what are you talking about Sam?" Gaurav asked. "And what is wrong with your eyes?"
"Uff Gaurav! You can be so dense sometimes," muttered Sam.
"Well how do you expect a guy to think on an empty stomach?" frowned Gaurav. "Now let me in."
"No Gaurav, I'm telling you it's not a good idea," insisted Sam. She maintained her stance blocking the boys from entering.
Just then her mother came up behind her. "Simran, who is at the door?" she asked. "Oh! Gaurav...Preet Ji, how nice to see you again."
"Namaste Mrs. Singh," smiled Preet.
"Namaste namaste," smiled Mrs. Singh. "You're just in time for breakfast. Simran...don't stand there like an idiot, let the boys in."
"But mom...," sighed Sam.
"Yeah, let us in," said Gaurav. He pushed the door wide open and walked past Sam, followed closely behind by Preet.
"Uh...Mrs. Singh, is Meher up by any chance?" Preet asked hopefully.
"Why yes, she's been up for quite some time now," smiled Mrs. Singh. "She had a visitor earlier this morning. In fact, she and her parents are in the living room with him right now."
"Him?" Preet said in surprise. He leaned over to Sam. "Do you know who it is?"
Before Sam could say anything, the living room doors flew open. Meher, her parents and their visitor walked out. Gaurav's mouth fell open in surprise.
"Viren?!" frowned Preet.
