Chapter 17

Stay with me

If someone had told him in the coming days he was going to hang out with his college mate, share an odd chemistry with his sister who was poles apart from him in every possible way, save the same girl from the goons chasing her, jump from a moving train into water, get lost in a jungle on his way back home, Omkara Singh Oberoi would have admitted that person in the best mental hospital available or better strangled him.

But the situation he was in, was not funny at all.

The water still burned his eyes, as he rubbed them. For a moment his mind was blank and then the first coherent thought he had was of her.

"Gauri!" He uttered in alarm and his eyes swept the empty river bank. She was nowhere to be seen. A cold fear clawed at his heart. The girl had trusted him, he had seen it in her espresso color eyes, clutched his hand like a kid as they jumped and now she was nowhere. Did the current take her away? God, what was he going to do now? "GAURI!!!" No reply, he ran a shaking hand through his wet mane. Where was she?

"Take this," she had thrust the document in his hand. "It's mom's last will, Kali had been concealing for Ragav. She had disposed everything to Di and me, Ragav gets nothing, even if we are to die, the property goes to a trust. Keep it safe, I need to send it to my lawyer in Delhi - please Omkara, it must not go back to Ragav."

He recalled her words, and dug into the inner pocket of his jacket, where the paper remained, safe from water. But he had to find her. "Gauri!"

Then he saw a flicker of blue, at the far end of his vision. Before Omkara knew it, he was running, his throat dry and heart beating warily. It was her, curled into a ball of soaked clothes and mattered hair. Her face too pale and body numb, her lips trembling with cold.

"Gauri!" He turned her over, with a shaking hand. "N - no!" She was bleeding, a dark crimson patch blooming on the navy blue fabric of her blouse. She had a hand clutched over it, blood trickling through her white fingers. He had heard that bullet, the moment they jumped, but he never knew it had reached her. "Ri! Talk to me, Ri!" He tapped her cheek gently, she was cold, so cold. Omkara felt his breath hitch. Her eyes blinked blearily, and turned to hold his gaze.

"That document - do you have it?" Her voice was too weak. "Please, send it to Delhi - Omkara."

"Stay awake Ri," he tried to keep his voice from breaking, but his throat suddenly felt too tight to form any words. She reached out to grip his hand. "Ragav shouldn't get anything that is not his, promise me."

Okay, okay," he said, pulling her shivering figure into his embrace. "You're going to be alright, hmm, just keep talking."

She laughed bitterly, a sound that was so pitiful like a cough.

"You'd think I'm greedy huh? Do you hate me Omkara?"

"No, no I don't hate you."

"Good...Don't hate me please."

"Stop begging," he sounded angry. "Gauri Kumari Sharma never begs, remember? Don't talk like something's wrong.."

"Something is wrong silly," she laughed again. "I'm shot."

"I'm not going to let you die!" He said stubbornly. Holding her closer, rubbing her palms. "You're not going to leave me again, no, I'm not letting you go!"

"I always wanted to go." Her tone was dreamy. "Everyone is already there, my family."

"You're wrong," he suddenly found himself telling her. "Do you know that? You're not alone. Your sister is alive."

"Wh - What?" her eyes opened again and their gazes locked.

"And you'll be seeing her soon. I promise."

"Lier!" She said bitterly. "That was rude Mr. Oberoi."

Omkara sighed.

"I'm not lying. Annika is alive, I know her personally, she is my sister in law."

"Annika -" she sounded thoughtful. "You knew her name - that day, back at home, you came there -"

"Looking for any hints on her past - yes. She is alive, do you believe me now?"

"Did you tell her about me? Does she remember me?"

"No," he said and her eyes blinked once.

"Don't tell her. Promise me Omkara, you won't tell her anything!"

He said nothing. Her loyalty towards her family was irking him now. She was dying, and all she thought about was how her sister would be hurt? What he was going through meant nothing to her? Damn it; this was the girl he had to fall in love with?

"Who's there?" A new voice broke his trance, there were footsteps approaching, and a woman wrapped in a shawl and dressed in a loose kurta emerged from the thicket of trees. For a moment they stood looking at each other, their faces blank.

"Tum?" They both said at once.

"Omkara," the woman's lips twisted into something he couldn't distinguish whether was a grin or a grimace.

"Ishana," he replied curtly.

He was not sure he liked surprises after all.
