Chapter 10
Falling apart
It was no longer about winning or losing, nor a battle to begin with. It was simply a cluster of stubborn flames caught in a gust of wind; trying to set the wind ablaze and roaring in anger as it failed, dancing sensuously as the breeze stroked the fire, eventually merging together to create a sizzling warmth. His hair curtained them from light, falling in soft waves around them, she blinked up at his smoldering dark gaze. They broke apart, gasping for a shared breath, and his lips tugged upwards forming a haughty, faint smile that made her heart skip. The trance that bound them was still in place and Ri found herself rooted on the spot. Her skin broke into goosebumps as his rough hand caressed her cheek, sliding down her throat, skimming underneath that loose shirt to linger at her shoulder. His lips sought hers out once more, and she found herself yearning for the warmth of his mouth as it traced the sharp line of her jaw and leisurely wondered down the column of her neck.
Ri drowned the entire glass in one go, her mind back to reflect on that moment. She should have known that Omkara Singh Oberoi was injurious to her mental health. Alas; she did not, and was drawn to him like a moth to an innocently flickering flame. He was innocent only in the exterior, inside he was as addictive as any of those drugs, a fire that she would not be able to contain. Ri sighed, and buried her head in her hands, her fingertips messing with her henna colored curls. She could not afford to fall for him, no, Gauri Kumari Sharma would not lose her heart like this.
But isn't it too late? A small voice suggested in the back of her head. Was not she hopelessly fallen for that imperfect, judgmental, freak of an artist?
"Gosh!" She exhaled loudly and raised her head, her weary eyes shifting around the dimly lit club, the crowd pressing against each other senselessly and the occasional neon flashes of flickering lights, before she tapped on the polished bar counter.
"One more Johnny," she groaned, flashing a grimace at the friendly bartender. He nodded at her, eyes travelling over her face.
"Bad day Ri?" He suggested mixing her third drink.
"She doesn't have bad days Johnny, instead she spoils others' day." Someone said joining them, a voice she only knew too well. Ri looked up, her eyes burning.
"Amit!" She said curtly trying to get up. Amit held her elbow, pulling her back to a seating position. "Let go of me!"
"Why? You didn't mind earlier, let me get a good look at you sweetie," his tone was slurry and eyes hooded.
"Creep," muttered Ri. "Dude what were you drinking?" Amit ignored her, his hand still running up and down her arm. Ri folded her arms, her disgust clearly mirrored in her features. "Why are you trying to create a scene Amit?"
**
She watched him approach through the rim of the wineglass she had raised to her eyes, imitating a mock toast. Omkara ignored her and sat in a stool as far away from her as possible. Svetlana could have laughed at him, but she did not, instead she slithered across the bar counter and leaned against his arm.
"You know full well how to make someone jealous," she cooed, tracing a finger down his arm. "Such a naughty way to welcome your finacee..."
"Why did you call me here?" he snapped at her, still looking straight ahead.
""If I was not here, would I have known, the games you're playing?" Her tone was playful much to his irritation.
"Get to the point will you?"
"Can't a woman miss her would - be - husband?"
At this he turned to look at her, his cold gaze swept over her face once.
"You and I both know we do not share that kind of a bond Svetlana." His tone was finite and bitter at the same time.
"But we are going to end up together, for lifetime..." she laughed in his ear, still running a seductive hand down his arm. "So get used to seeing me often Omkara."
"Take your hand off me!"
"Ouch," she took her hand off as if burnt and waved it in the air. "Such attitude. I wonder why? Tell me Omkara - have you fallen in love?"
The words gave life to images. Two espresso colored eyes blinking up close, lit up from within with passion and something more; shaking his head he closed his eyes. This was not a part of the plan.
"Poor you," Svetlana continued to coo. "The moment you decided to listen to your brain, dil paraya hogaya kya? However," she leaned closer, her lips almost brushing his earlobe. "Get this in your head, it won't take me long to return to your father - who we both know will have me back with open arms. If you don't want that - keep you toes inside the line. I'm watching Omkara - don't play games with me!"
"What do you want?"
She fished a folder, placing it delicately on the polished surface in front of him
"Security," her smile was venomous. "You see, I don't trust anyone other than myself, at times I don't even trust myself." A mock laugh, to break the sentence. "So I need to make sure you won't pull a "sanam bewafa" on me right? This is out prenuptial agreement, sign it."
Omkara raised his eyebrows.
"And if I don't?"
"You know," she said casually, a cocky grin twisting her lips. "Mere paas option T bhi hai..."
**
"Fished an Oberoi have you?"
Ri raised her eyebrows, slapping his fingers away. Amit laughed bluntly, his featured screwed with intoxication.
"I've always known you had a thing for riches, now that a real blue blood is interested why would you waste your time with me?"
"Right I wouldn't." She stood up, her temper flaring. "Now if you'd excuse me..."
He grabbed her elbow once more.
"Get your hands off!"
"Waise maan na padenga, he's turned you into a sati savitri!" He towered over her, trying to bore into her eyes. "What does he know, it would only last - what - a month? Then you'd be back to your siren ways!"
"You know what you sound like Amit? You sound desperate." Ri shrugged, the drinks she had consumed earlier firing up her frustration. "Suits your pathetic self! I'm really surprised that I picked you at all. Now since you haven't worked it up yet, let me explain without putting more pressure on your thick skull. I was using you, okay? Get it? Ragav was trying to get me hitched so I wanted to pretend I was dating someone, someone he approved. Sadly, you were the only candidate available at that time. Then you went all crazy and brought your parents and a possible marriage proposal into the mix and I had to end things. Now we got that out of the way, you should know that I was never interested in you, and I will never be!"
"Are you doing the same thing with him?" His tone was bitter and his fingers dug into the skin of her wrist. Ri winced and pulled her hand off his grip harshly.
"What is it to you if I am?" The moment those words left her mouth, she knew something was wrong. Amit gave her a lopsided smile, titling his head a bit. Ri turned slowly, her eyes widening as things started to make sense.
Omkara stood there, his jaw tense and hands fisted. She winced as their gazes met, his dark eyes were on fire. Something, bitterer than disgust crossed his features. Her eyes swept over him to the woman by his side; her arm swathed around his and plump lips forming a twisty grin was Svetlana.
He held out his hand for her.
"Papers?" He said shortly. Svetlana sneered again, handing him the folder with a pen. His eyes remained fixed on Ri's as he signed gritting his teeth and thrust the folder back to Svetlana.
"Thank you darling, " the latter hugged his arm, blinking her dark eyes up at him seductively. Without a word, Omkara removed her hand and left, not sparing a glance at her. Ri took a moment to gather herself, her eyes shifting from Amit to Svetlana, before taking off after him. He did not stop and she could hardly match up to his speed. Cursing his long legs and everything from Amit to Svetlana Ri called after him.
"Omkara! Listen to me! Omkara, it's not what you think!"
He paused, and the ticking of her heels on the polished floor followed. The music of the nightclub beneath thumped ghostly against them. He turned to look at her and his cold gaze swept her once; from head to toe and back up; until he stopped at her large espresso colored eyes. She shivered Involuntarily, knowing what he noted with that gaze; the blue highlights in her hair, the black ink on her shoulder, the piercing on her nose and that thigh length black dress that fitted like a glove.
"I can never harbor any feelings for a girl like you." That word was directed at everything she knew he saw, and nothing she knew he felt.
"Well, nobody asked you to love me," She shrugged her shoulders, her tone of indifference never faltering. He would never hear the sound of her heart breaking, or the swish of her last hope vanishing. He would not see that extra shine in her eyes as she blinked a tear away.
Gauri Kumari Sharma never begged. Not even from the man who had taken the possession of her heart, even against her better judgement. So she went, brushing past him, her head held high and hair flying with her steps.
She raced the corridor until she was out of his sight and picked up the call that was vibrating for so long.
"Yes Uncle. I'm ready to get married; to whomever you want me to." She sighed listening to the other side and added.
"Let's go to Baraily."
