Chapter 40 - Secrets
Music played as Veera and her girlfriends took to the center of the ballroom and continued to dance to different Bollywood songs at the sangeet ceremony.
Gaurav, Viren, and Nihal had stepped over to one side to watch.
"That was fun," said Gaurav.
"You would say that, you traitor," laughed Nihal. "I can't believe you abandoned me for the bride's side. We've been friends for how long now? Ten years."
"I know yaar, but Veera's been like a sister to me for twice that long," smiled Gaurav. "You better take good care of her or else Preet and I will be knocking on your door, and it won't be pretty." He raised a closed fist and showed it to Nihal.
"Okay okay," laughed Nihal. "Speaking of Preet, he was just here being the life of the party...where did he go?"
"I know one place where he's not," grumbled Viren. "...next to his own fiance."
"What's that supposed to mean?" said Gaurav.
"As if you don't know," scoffed Viren.
"No, I don't know," Gaurav said getting angry.
"Hey guys chill, there's a party going on right?" said Nihal. He placed a hand on each of their shoulders. "I'm sure Preet will be back shortly with another something up his sleeve to tease me with."
"Look, can we talk about something other than Preet?" asked Viren. "Where are you and Veera planning to go on your honeymoon?"
"Paris," said Nihal.
"Oo La La, the city of love," grinned Viren.
"And shopping," chuckled Nihal. "Veera's favorite hobby."
"Just becareful she doesn't empty your wallet though," said Viren. "But then I guess money is no object for you guys."
Gaurav rolled his eyes.
"Uh...so Viren, is your sister in town visiting?" asked Nihal.
"I don't have a sister," said Viren. "I'm an only child."
"Oh...well then it must have been another relative or friend," remarked Nihal. "I saw you with her at the mall the other day. There was a little boy with you guys too. You seemed to be carrying several shopping bags for her. I was going to come up to you and say Hi', but by the time I checked out with my purchases, you were gone."
"I...uh...I have no idea what you're talking about Nihal," said Viren. He tugged at the collar of his shirt as if it suddenly seemed too tight for him.
"It was just 2 days ago man," said Nihal. "Around lunch time at the mall...and then yesterday again. All I'm saying is that if a relative was visiting, you could have brought her with you tonight. She seemed to be our age. She would have enjoyed herself."
"And I said I don't know what you're talking about! It must have been someone else," insisted Viren, as he began to walk away. "Excuse me, I'm going to go get something to drink."
"What's up with him all of a sudden?" Nihal wondered out loud.
"I don't know," said Gaurav. "Uh...Nihal...do you mind telling me some more about the girl you saw him with?"
A short while later...
Sam walked up to Gaurav. He was waiting for her outside the ballroom of the Juneja mansion. "What happened Gaurav?" asked Sam. "You called and said it was urgent."
"It is," said Gaurav, as he took her hand and started walking. "Guess what I just learned about our friend Viren Chadda?"
"What?" asked Sam.
"Nihal spotted him at the mall with someone," Gaurav related the information to her excitedly. "They had a kid with them too."
"You're making me miss out on the sangeet for this?" Sam rolled her eyes.
"Didn't you hear what I said?" asked Gaurav. "Viren was with another woman."
"So?" asked Sam. "Maybe it was his sister...or a friend."
"I don't think so," Gaurav shook his head. "Nihal said Viren was shopping with her. They even argued at one point."
"So?" asked Sam.
"So...what if Viren is in a relationship with someone else, and he's using Meher?" suggested Gaurav. "I wouldn't put it past him. He always touts himself as being self-made, but he's certainly not above taking favors from anyone."
"Or doing something for...let's say...the Rampals in return for a favor." Sam's eyes grew wide as the thought struck her. "Wait a minute Gaurav. Let's not get ahead of ourselves," she cautioned. "You could just be jumping to conclusions, and wind up with egg on your face. Did either you or Nihal ask Viren about this?"
"Nihal did. You should have seen the color drain from old Chaddi's face," smiled Gaurav. "He denied being at the mall altogether. He kept insisting that Nihal had made a mistake, then he hightailed it out of there before anyone could ask him anything more about it. The guy is hiding something, I'm a 100% sure of that. Preet was right, he's not as clean as he appears to be on the surface. Speaking of Preet, I have to go find him right away. This is just the kind of information he was looking for to break Viren and Meher up."
"I'm as eager as you are to get rid of Viren," said Sam. "But we shouldn't do anything just based on this information, especially like tell Preet. If there is even the slightest chance that Nihal was wrong...what I'm trying to say is that we don't want to get his hopes up and then set him up for a fall."
"Then what should we do?" asked Gaurav. "We can't just let this drop."
"Oh we're not going to let anything drop," smiled Sam. "We're going to go back inside and grill Nihal again as if his life depended on it. Then you and I are going to do a little snooping around and find out just who Viren Chadda's mystery woman is."
Meanwhile...
Preet headed back to the banquet hall. He had already lost all interest in the party. His only concern now was to find his brothers and tell them what he had learned about the Rampals' plans. That tender the company had submitted...there had to be some way to stop it from going ahead.
Just then, Meher walked out of the banquet room. She forced herself to give a polite smile to guests heading back inside into the sangeet program. She however, was anything but happy. How dare Viren pull her to one side in front of everyone? She was engaged to him yes...but that didn't mean she was his possession! What had she been doing except dancing? She was sick and tired of being pushed around by everyone. She looked up and saw Preet heading in her direction. Great! She rolled her eyes. Just what I needed! I suppose he's going to see me here alone and try to take advantage of the situation. Let him try! Sab ka gussa iss pe nikal doon gi (I'll let him have it). To her surprise, however, he walked right past her as if she wasn't even there.
Meher's mouth fell open. "What on earth?!
Two days later...
Sam was sitting on her bed going through some photos when Meher knocked on the door.
"Hi Sam," Meher smiled as she walked through the door.
"Hi! You're here...," smiled Sam. She got up and gave her friend a hug, then made her sit on the bed with her. "I'm so glad you decided to spend the day with me."
"Yeah well...I had nothing better to do," sighed Meher.
"Ouch," Sam made a pouty face.
"I'm sorry Sam," winced Meher. "...that came out all wrong. I meant that, I didn't have any plans for today, that way we can spend as much time together as possible, before I go back home."
"Still trying to run away, eh?" chuckled Sam. "When are you planning to leave?"
"Tomorrow or the day after, I guess," Meher shrugged her shoulders.
"So soon?" said Sam.
"My bag is all packed," explained Meher. "I just have to check the train schedules."
"I suppose Daljeet Rampal must be feeling relieved hearing the news of your imminent departure," said Sam.
"Yeah," nodded Meher. "She's been counting the days from the time I moved in."
"I bet she has," grumbled Sam.
"It's okay. I understand," said Meher. "Taking responsibility for someone else's daughter in a big city like Delhi, can be a point of stress. I only stayed because everyone insisted I stick around for Veera's wedding, else I would have left long ago."
"And I suppose it helps that along with you goes her daughter's main competition," Sam pointed out.
"Sam, let's not start that up again," sighed Meher.
"Okay okay I won't," Sam raised her hands defensively. "But you know you're welcome to stay at my house for as long as you like."
"Thanks," smiled Meher. "I really do need to get back home, but until then I'm all yours."
"Great!" said Sam. "I was thinking we'd go out and take in some of the sights, have some lunch, catch a movie and then come back here for dinner. In between, we'll chat up a storm. Just give me like 10 minutes to get ready."
"Sounds good," smiled Meher. She waited until Sam walked over to her closet to select an outfit, then casually glanced over to the photos spread out on the bed. She picked one up. "Are these from Veera's wedding?"
"Yeah, Gaurav brought them over last night," smiled Sam. "Aren't they great?"
"Yes, they are," agreed Meher. She put the photo down and picked up another one. "Veera made for a beautiful bride. I'm really going to miss her."
"Me too," nodded Sam. "It's amazing how quickly we all bonded and became such good friends."
"Mmm-Hmm, Meher said absent-mindedly. She picked up another photo and observed it closely. This one had Preet and her in it. They were both tossing flower petals at the bride and groom as they took their pheras. But there was something about the expression Preet wore that bothered her.
"You can keep that one if you like," Sam teased Meher as she came from behind and looked over her shoulder.
"What? Oh...no," blushed Meher. "I was just..."
"Come on Meher," said Sam. "You don't have to pretend in front of me. I know how you feel about Preet. You're welcome to have that photo."
"Sam," frowned Meher. "I'm engaged to be married to someone else. Why would I want to hang onto Preet's photo?"
"Suit yourself," Sam shrugged her shoulders.
"I was just wondering...uh..." Meher chose her words carefully. "...did you notice something off about Preet?"
"What do you mean?" asked Sam.
"He was behaving quite oddly at the sangeet, said Meher. "like...unusually serious...he...he was the same the next day at the wedding."
"Maybe the realization just hit him that his baby sister was getting married," suggested Sam. "He and Veera are very close. He can't possibly be happy about her leaving."
"No...it was something more than that," Meher shook her head. "He seemed...preoccupied...you know he hasn't even called me once for the past 2 days."
"Oh! I see," chuckled Sam. "So that's what's really bothering you."
"No...I...uh...that's not what I meant," blushed Meher. "I mean...it's just so out of character for Preet. He was so determined to..."
"...have you?" Sam completed her sentence. "Well, maybe he got tired and gave up."
"You think so?" frowned Meher.
"It's a possibility, said Sam. "I mean...a guy can only take so much rejection. But...that's what you wanted...isn't it?"
"No...I mean yes...," Meher said in a deflated tone of voice. "I mean...I guess so. I'm just worried about him."
Sam sat down next to her and put her arm around her shoulders. "You know...you can always call him."
Meher thought for a minute. Sam was right. She could call Preet. As a concerned friend of course...nothing more. If he on the other hand misconstrued things and took her phone call as encouragement...that would open an entirely new can of worms. She was debating what to do when her phone suddenly rang. It was Viren. "Hello Viren," She answered flatly. She was still miffed at him for having pulled her to one side in front of everyone at the sangeet.
"Hi Meher," smiled Viren. "How's my girl?"
"I'm fine," said Meher. "Did you need something?"
"You mean other than you?" chuckled Viren.
Meher rolled her eyes.
"Uh...I was actually hoping we could meet today," said Viren.
"I'm sorry Viren, but I already have plans," said Meher. "I promised Sam I'd spend the day with her."
"Okay...tomorrow then," insisted Viren. "You can come over to my place. Mom and dad will be here too. We need to finalize a date for our wedding."
"I was hoping to leave for Ludhiana tomorrow Viren," sighed Meher. "Besides, I already told you, I would have to discuss things with my family before I can give you an answer."
"Well then you're in luck," chuckled Viren. "My parents have invited your parents over too...and they've accepted."
"Papa-Ji and Kuljeet-Ma are coming here?" said Meher. She and Sam exchanged surprised looks.
"Surprised you didn't I?" laughed Viren. "They're as excited as I am. Well...I have to get back to work, so I'll see you later."
"My parents are coming to Delhi...to finalize a date for my wedding," Meher told Sam. She felt like she was in a daze.
"Seems a bit rushed doesn't it?" said Sam. "I mean, I know when we were at the farmhouse, Viren was talking end of the month and all...but still..."
"I know...," muttered Meher. "What am I going to do?"
I don't know about you Meher, thought Sam. But Gaurav and I had better dig up something on Viren...fast!
Meanwhile...
Nihal looked around then checked his watch. "What is this Gaurav?" he sighed. "I just got married. I should be spending time with Veera. Instead, I'm sitting in the food court of a shopping mall...sipping on my 3rd cup of coffee...looking out for some random girl...for the second day in a row!"
"Don't worry about it," Gaurav reassured him. "You guys will have plenty of time to spend together in Paris."
"If we ever get there," said Nihal. "Do you know how upset Veera's going to be, if I don't get back and help her pack? Our flight leaves tonight."
"Look Nihal...do you want to help Preet or not?" said Gaurav.
"Of course I do," said Nihal.
"Good," said Gaurav. "Then keep your eyes peeled for our mystery girl. And just remember...if we don't find that girl, and Preet and Meher get married to the wrong people...they'll be miserable for the rest of their lives. Need I remind you how close Preet and Veera are? If she finds out you had a chance to do something about it and didn't...she'll make you miserable for the rest of your life."
"But what if I was wrong?" sighed Nihal. "What if I really did mistake Viren for someone else? What if...?" He stopped midsentence. "Well I'll be monkey's uncle...it's her. It's really her."
Gaurav turned to look in the direction Nihal was staring in. A young woman had just walked into the salon nearby. She stopped by the reception desk, and chatted momentarily with the girl behind the desk, before collecting her work supplies and heading inside.
"That's her," said Nihal. "That's the girl I saw Viren with."
"Come on," said Gaurav, as he and Nihal quickly made their way over to the salon.
"Hello gentlemen, how may I help you?" smiled the receptionist. "Facial, pedicure, manicure? Do you have an appointment or shall I make one for you?"
"Uh...actually miss...we just wanted to ask you about the girl that was speaking to you a few minutes ago," said Gaurav. "Can you tell us who she is?"
"Why do you want to know?" frowned the receptionist. "Who are you people?"
Nihal looked at Gaurav worriedly.
Gaurav cleared his throat. "Uh...actually miss, my fiance's birthday is tomorrow, and I wanted to surprise her with a full beauty treatment."
"That's right," agreed Nihal. "My wife has come here before and recommended that we book an appointment with...uh...uh...Nidhi. That girl just matched her description so we were just wondering..."
"Hmm...," said the receptionist. "We we don't have anyone by the name of Nidhi working here."
"You don't?" said Gaurav. "Well then we must have come to the wrong place. Let's go Nihal."
"Wait!" said the girl. "I'm sure Sneha is just as good as this Nidhi person. Plus we're running a special on ayurvedic massage. It's the perfect way to detoxify the mind, body and spirit. Your fiance will walk out of here a new woman. I guarantee it."
"Well...if you really think Sneha is that good," Gaurav said slyly.
"Oh she is, she is," insisted the girl. "Uh...your girlfriend's name?"
"Simran," smiled Gaurav. "Simran Singh."
The next day...
Meher was getting ready when her phone rang. She picked up the phone excitedly when she saw that the caller was Preet. She was about to answer then put the phone down again. Hmph! Why should I be so quick to answer? It's not like I was dying to hear from him. Waise bhi...itne dino baad isko meri yaad ayi hai (Besides, he thought of me only now, after so many days), let him wait. The phone grew silent. Oh no! Meher thought as she picked up the little device disappointedly. Call me back! Or should I call him? Oh God! Come on Preet, please please call me back. As if in answer to her prayers, her phone rang again. This time she answered it on the first ring. "Hello?!" she cried. Uff! Stop sounding so desperate! "Uh...hello Preet," she answered more calmly.
"Hey Meher," said Preet. "Still in town? I thought you would have left right after the wedding."
"I am...I mean...I'll be leaving tomorrow hopefully," said Meher. "My parents are coming to pick me up."
"Oh," sighed Preet.
"And what about you Preet?" asked Meher. "How have you been?"
"I'm okay. Of course I'd feel a lot better if you weren't going to be leaving so soon," said Preet. "But other than that, I'm fine. Why do you ask?"
"You seemed a little upset when were we at Veera's wedding," said Meher. "No...in fact I noticed a change in your mood the night before at the Sangeet too. So, I was just wondering if everything was okay?"
Preet smiled to himself. Meher knew him so well. "It's nothing for you to worry about Meher. Just business. I'll sort it out."
"Then why didn't you call me for so many days?" complained Meher. She winced as soon as the words left her mouth.
"What? You mean you wanted me to call you?" chuckled Preet. "Someone pinch me. I think I'm dreaming."
"That's not what I meant," insisted Meher.
"Uhn-huhn," teased Preet.
"It's not," lied Meher.
"I just wanted to give you some space Meher," said Preet. "At least everyone keeps telling me to do so. But since you are going to back to Ludhiana for sure this time...how about if we meet up for dinner tonight?"
"Are you sure your fiance will be okay with you asking me out Preet Juneja?" smiled Meher. "I recall last time you were caught flirting with me, she threatened to cut you up into little pieces."
"Well...maybe we won't tell her," chuckled Preet. "Please Meher...I'd just like to see you before you go."
"I...uh...I can't," sighed Meher.
"Oh come on Meher, sighed Preet. "Don't tell me you're duty bound by doing what's right all the time. If it eases your conscience, I'll tell you again for the umpteenth time. I'm not going to marry Ash."
"Preet...," sighed Meher.
"Or would you rather I ditch my responsibilities at work and follow you to Ludhiana?" asked Preet.
"You wouldn't!" cried Meher.
"You know very well I will," said Preet. "You're not going to get rid of me that easily Meher. So how about it? Dinner tomorrow or I show up on your doorstep."
"I...I can't," said Meher. "I have other plans."
"What other plans?" asked Preet.
"I'd rather not say," said Meher.
"Are you putting me on?" asked Preet.
"No," said Meher. "I mean it Preet. I do have other plans."
"With who?" Preet asked again.
"Uh...my parents...they're coming to Delhi today," said Meher. "We have plans together."
"Oh...," said Preet. "Okay then, how about lunch tomorrow? Even coffee will do Meher. I just want to see you...please."
"Okay fine...," said Meher. "We'll meet. I'll...uh...I'll have to see what my parents' plans are for returning home, but I'll see you before I go."
"Promise?" asked Preet.
"I promise," said Meher. "I'll call you and let you know when."
"Great!" said Preet.
Meanwhile...
Heer had just got done with her check-up and went over to the receptionist's desk to make an appointment for next month.
"Ah! Mrs. Juneja, how was your check up?" asked the receptionist.
"Good Lisa. Thanks for asking," smiled Heer. "I have to make an appointment for my next one."
"Okay," said Lisa. "If you don't mind, please have a seat. I have another patient on the line I need to take care of first. I'll be with you in just a few minutes."
"No problem," smiled Heer. She sat down and picked up a magazine to flip through when she noticed a familiar face walk into the office. She got up and walked over to the girl waiting at the receptionist desk. "Ashlehsa? Is that you?"
"Heer Bhabi!" Ashlesha gasped in surprise. "Wha...what are you doing here?"
"I was here for a routine pre-natal check-up," said Heer. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm here for a check up too," said Ashlesha. Heer raised an eyebrow in surprise. "I mean...my friend...my friend is here for a check up. I...uh...it's her first time...so...I...uh...came to give her some company."
"But I don't see anyone with you," said Heer.
"Huhn?" said Ashlesha. She looked around her. "Oh God! Where did she go? Abhi toh mere saat thi (she was just with me)." Just then her phone rang. "Hello! Where did you go? No no...stay there, I'm coming. Uh...that was my friend. She forgot her phone in the car and went back to get it. She's not sure where to go, so I have to go get her. It was nice seeing you."
"Nice seeing you too," said Heer, as Ashlesha made a hasty exit from the office. Something about the way Ashlesha was behaving didn't sit well with her...but what?
"Mrs. Juneja," the receptionist called out. "Let's make that appointment for your next check-up now."
"Hmm," said Heer. "Um...Lisa...that girl that was just here. Do you happen to know her?"
"No," the girl shrugged her shoulders. "I've never seen her before."
Later that evening...
"Hey Preet," said Gaurav, as he walked into the game-room of the Juneja mansion.
"Hey Gaurav...perfect timing," smiled Preet. He was arranging the balls on the billiard table. "Up for a game?"
"Sure," said Gaurav. He walked over to the rack holding the cue sticks and carefully chose one that felt comfortable in his hand then joined Preet at the table.
"So...how have you been?" asked Preet. As he took aim and made his shot. "I haven't seen you since the wedding."
"Yeah man, sorry about that," said Gaurav. "I've been busy."
"Did your dad put you in charge of a new project?" asked Preet.
"Uh...no...this is one of my own," said Gaurav. "But it's equally important."
"Anything I can help you with?" asked Preet.
"I'll let you know when the time is right," said Gaurav. "What about you? What did Prem and Herman have to say about what you overheard the Rampals saying?"
"They were troubled to say the least," sighed Preet. "Herman Bhai filed all the necessary paperwork to rescind our bid. We're still waiting for the final word though. Let's just keep our fingers crossed for everything to work out."
"Hmm," nodded Gaurav.
"Speaking of working out," smiled Preet. "Guess who I have a date with tomorrow?"
"Meher," smiled Gaurav.
"How did you know?" asked Preet.
"How else do you think?" chuckled Gaurav. "Sam."
"Man! Do these girls always tell each other everything?" Preet shook his head.
"Always," laughed Gaurav.
"I had hoped to see her tonight but she had plans with her parents," explained Preet.
"Yeah," sighed Gaurav. "Poor girl. Sam said it was clear she's not ready to set a date, but they're over at Viren's place doing just that."
"What?!" exclaimed Preet.
Gaurav passed his hand over his face. When was he going to learn to keep his mouth shut? He winced as Preet came and stood before him.
"Gaurav, what the hell is going on?" demanded Preet. "Tell me everything. And I mean everything!"
A short while later...
Meher was seated next to her parents in Mr. and Mrs. Chadda's home. Her parents were busy exchanging pleasantries with the Chaddas, when her phone rang. Who would be calling her? She wondered as she took her phone out of her purse and looked at it. Preet? Oh God! Why was he calling her now of all times? Didn't she tell him they'd meet tomorrow? Her phone grew silent. She exhaled a sigh of relief when suddenly her phone began to ring again. It was Preet again. Meher gave her father a weak smile, and clasped her phone tightly. Preet definitely earned full marks for being persistant, but his timing left something to be desired.
Balraj watched Meher reject the call and put her phone on silent mode. "Aren't you going to answer that beta?" he asked.
"Well...I...uh...it's not important," stammered Meher. Just then the phone began to vibrate in her hand.
"Well it must be important if they're calling again and again," smiled Balraj. "Go ahead and take the call. Don't worry we won't make any final decisions without you."
Meher nodded and excused herself. She stepped into the next room then answered her phone which had started to vibrate again. "What is wrong with you Preet?!"
"Well hello Miss Maan." Preet's smooth voice could be heard from the other end of the line. "Is everything alright? I was starting to get worried."
"Why?" asked Meher. "And why are you calling me again and again?"
"I wouldn't have to call you repeatedly if you answered the first time, would I?" Preet said sarcastically.
"Okay," Meher exhaled to calm herself down. "What do you want?"
"I couldn't remember what time we were meeting tomorrow," said Preet. "Was it lunch at noon or coffee around 4?"
"That's why you've been calling me non-stop?! Preet...," Meher began warningly. "I swear if I could reach through this phone and strangle you I would. You know I'm with my parents."
"Oh...that's right...you had an evening planned with your parents," said Preet. "Oops! I completely forgot. Just like you forgot to tell me that you're at Viren's place!"
"Huhn? How did you find out?" Meher asked in surprise.
"I have my sources," said Preet.
"And I bet I know who your sources are," muttered Meher.
"So...how's it going? Set a date for your wedding yet?" Preet asked through gritted teeth.
"Look, can we not get into this right now?" Meher asked trying to deflect his question.
"You didn't answer my question," said Preet.
"Oh God Preet! We just got here 10 minutes ago," said Meher. "Pandit Ji hasn't even arrived yet. I'm stressed out over this as it is, without you adding to my worries."
"Then don't stress," said Preet. "I mean...I don't see why you're rushing things all of a sudden?"
"I'm not the one rushing," sighed Meher.
"But you're not doing anything to stop it either," complained Preet. "All I asked was for you to wait a couple of months until I sort things out with the Rampals."
"Not everything is in my control Preet," said Meher. "I...I have to respect the decisions my parents take on my behalf...and you should do the same. I've told you a thousand time before, we are not meant to be."
"Yes we are!" insisted Preet. "I love you Meher!"
"Stop saying that," cried Meher.
"But it's true," said Preet.
"Then stop loving me," argued Meher.
"I can't!" said Preet.
"Uff!" cried Meher. "I don't know why I even bother trying to have a sane conversation with someone as stubborn as you!"
"Ha! You think I'm being stubborn?!" said Preet.
Just then Kuljeet popped her head into the room. "Meher my dear, hurry up! Mrs. Chadda is serving up some snacks. Would you believe it...Viren made them with his own hands!"
"I'll be right there Kuljeet Ma," said Meher.
"So, Chaddi was too cheap to take you out was he?" Preet snorted disdainfully.
"You're behaving like a 2 year old Preet," said Meher.
"I was just hoping for once you'd listen to your heart Meher," said Preet. "But hey...maybe I'm playing the fool. Perhaps I've read you all wrong. Maybe you do find old Chaddi interesting, and if that's the case then...more power to you. I also know a nice box of rocks you can cuddle up to."
Meher's mouth fell open. "Well...maybe I do find Viren interesting."
"Really?" chuckled Preet. "Then why are you standing there talking to me instead of being with him?""
"You know that can easily be fixed," cried Meher. She hung up the phone. Uff! That Preet Juneja! She didn't want to argue with him, but he could be so immature and stubborn sometimes! She shook her head and turned to go, when she jumped back startled. Viren was standing there wearing a frown on his face. "Uh...Viren...I was...uh...I was just coming to join you guys."
Viren walked over to her and took the phone from her hands. He checked the name of the last caller, then looked up angrily at Meher.
Meanwhile...
Preet tossed his cell phone angrily across the pool table. He paced back and forth furiously before picking up a dart, taking aim and throwing it at the dartboard.
Gaurav walked up to him and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Calm down Preet. Everything will be alright." He glanced at the dartboard onto which Preet had taped Viren's picture. Three darts jutted out prominently from his forehead.
Preet shrugged his friend's hand aside and went to retrieve his darts. "Can you believe it? They're waiting for the pundit to arrive! She's actually going through with it!"
"I don't think she really has much of a choice," sighed Gaurav.
"Stop defending her!" cried Preet. He ran his hand through his hair in frustration. "You know, he cooked something for her! Ha! Like she's going to fall for that...How immature!"
"Hey...I like to cook for Sam," said Gaurav. "Girls like that sort of thing."
"You're not helping Gaurav!" cried Preet.
"Come on yaar, just take a deep breath and let it go," said Gaurav.
"I can't man!" Preet frowned at his friend's response. "She's over at his place! What if the mauhrat is sooner rather than later? What if I can't crack this Rampal thing in time? What if she really likes him?" He picked up the darts and suddenly rapid fired all 3 of them.
They landed in a line next to each other across the picture of Viren's face.
"Not bad," sighed Gaurav. "Perhaps this is a good time to discuss your anger management issues."
