{Ch 16}

{Love}

"Congratulations on your brother's wedding, Anju!"

"Excuse me? My brother's wedding?" Anjali asked, exchanging her empty glass with a filled one, not wanting to look at Lavanya to see the change of expressions on her face.

"Yeah. That beautiful girl in red who danced with him?" Another one from the group gushed, looking sideways at Khushi, who was right next to Arnav while he met one of his clients.

"She's not his wife," Lavanya gritted her teeth and the glass in her hand shook in fear of breaking.

"Oh, when are they getting married?" The first one asked excitedly, and Anjali pulled Lavanya with herself to avoid any scene.

"What the hell! This gossiping habit of theirs is going to get their heads smashed!" Lavanya muttered angrily as soon as Anjali pulled her to a secluded area.

"Relax, Lav. Let's ignore them. People in this world are judgemental fools!" Anjali commented, her eyes looking for Varun. Locating him with Mish, she excused herself from Lavanya.

Lavanya stared at Khushi who seemed to be laughing at Arnav's joke, and her blood boiled.

*

"Thank you Mr. Mehta," Arnav shook hands with another guest, smiling courteously at his wife as they exited the front gate after the dinner.

Arnav looked over to Khushi, who stood in a corner, looking in his direction. He sighed in relief. It definitely was not a bad idea to get Khushi along with him to the party. Even though Anjali seemed too engrossed in her own self all through the party, he knew her opinion was about Khushi was bound to change as soon as she met her.

"Ouch," he heard a scream from the stairs that the front door let to the parking area and he moved out of the house to check. A lady who supposedly got entangled in her sari and tripped, was being helped by her husband and another guard. Arnav nodded at guard and after assuring that she was fine, he went back into the mansion.

He walked absent-mindedly towards the spot where Khushi stood previously, but as soon as he actually looked around, he couldn't trace Khushi. His eyes roamed around the whole hall, stopping at the group of ladies surrounding his sister. He could not find Lavanya as well.

His jaw clenched, realising the possibility of the situation. He strode towards his sister, trying to keep his calm, "Di, where's Lavanya?"

"Lav?" Anjali looked around and then shrugged her shoulders, "She must be around here somewhere."

Arnav nodded and started walking towards Anjali's room, thinking it to be the favorite place for Lavanya to hang out. Just as he passed through the corridor, his lateral vision flashed with something blue and red. He turned to his side and saw Lavanya gripping someone by her shoulders. Khushi.

Anjali's eyes had followed Arnav's movement ever since he asked her about Lavanya. She saw him running to her room, then suddenly changing direction towards the backyard.

She excused herself from her friends and followed him.

*

"You stop it! Women like you should be executed! Trapping men for money, you bloody gold-digger-"

He heard Lavanya scream in her shrill voice, just followed by a loud slapping sound. He saw Lavanya tremble because of the sudden force, before she fell down on the ground, her hair covering her face. He looked over to Khushi and saw her trembling with anger, her face red and her cheeks covered with streaks of tears.

Lavanya looked up to find Arnav standing in front of her and closed her eyes in frustration.

"You b*tch-" Lavanya stood up and caught hold of Khushi's wrist, who was standing behind Arnav, "How dare you hit me?"

She felt her upper arm being grabbed roughly by Arnav and immediately, her hold over Khushi loosened.

"Stop," he said with gritted teeth, his eyes stern, "Stop before I do something that I regret later on."

Lavanya lowered down her eyes, her heart starting to beat faster with fear. She had planned to be quick and leave quietly; that she would be successful to break Khushi down and Arnav wouldn't even come to know about anything, but Khushi's courage amazed her. She expected her to be an emotional shit, but she was something beyond that. And then Arnav had to make his entry!

"Arnav," Khushi softly looked at him, wiping her tears with the back of her palms. She then turned to face Lavanya. Looking straight into her eyes, she calmly started, "I am not doing this for money or for living a life of luxury."

"Khushi, you don't need to explain anything to her!"

"Please?" She asked, her eyes welling up again. Arnav left Lavanya's arm and stepped back, glancing over at Anjali who just entered the backyard.

"I did not get any money paid when a man forced himself on me," Khushi's voice grew hoarse, "Nor when another man helped me to get out of that hell. I get paid when I work. If me living under the same roof with Arnav bothers you, it's your problem. I am going to pay him every penny he has spent on me in these two months."

She breathed deeply and closed her eyes, wiping her tears once again.

"You don't have any right to comment upon my life when you don't know the back-story!" She stated and again took a deep breath.

Arnav looked at Lavanya and mentally clapped for Khushi. Her face was stern and she avoided an eye-contact with Khushi. On a contrast, Anjali, who was still standing near the entrance of the backyard, was staring at Khushi.

"Anju," Arnav did not know when and how Lavanya noticed Anjali and ran towards her, while he himself took Khushi's hand and gave it a gentle tug to ask her to move with him.

"Arnav, wait!" Anjali called out loudly, making them stop and turn around to look at her.

"Di, if it's about this woman," he pointed his finger coldly at Lavanya, "then we're leaving."

When Anjali did not speak for another minute, Arnav turned and walked out to the main hall, pulling Khushi along with him, two of them followed by Anjali and Lavanya.

"Arnav, listen to me! She is not right for you, Arnav!" Anjali shouted from behind, "She is trained to act innocent!"

"Enough!" Arnav shouted louder than her, feeling Khushi shiver in his hold.

He turned around and found his sister crying, "She will leave you, chhote!"

"Don't call me that!" He retorted, a disgusted expression coming over his face. He glanced at Khushi by his side and then back to his sister, "I love her and she is going to stay with me, forever!"

And with that, he tightened his hold over Khushi's hand and turned to leave the place.

"Don't come to me when she leaves you, then!" Anjali screamed from behind, wanting to run and hold him back; but she was stopped. She looked back and found Varun holding her hand. He stared down at her, shaking his head in denial.

The whole journey from Raizada Mansion to the farmhouse went in utter silence. A storm had passed through both of them just a few minutes ago that succeeded in shaking their inner forms. What Lavanya failed in doing, Arnav's and Anjali's conversation did. Khushi was completely shaken by Arnav's confession, more than anything.

As soon as they reached the farmhouse, Khushi, without waiting for Arnav, opened the door of the car and ran inside. Arnav swallowed the painful lump in his throat and sprinted behind her.

"Khushi, listen!" He requested, reaching just behind her.

She turned back violently, hot tears flowing out of her red eyes, making her already flushed cheeks burn.

"Is this why you were helping me, Arnav?" She asked in a low voice, looking straight into his eyes, "You know what? You are no different than Shyamji!"

She stepped back and ran to her room. Deafening silence filled the room as Arnav was left wide-eyed staring at her retreating back.

Pretty much an 'in-action' chapter. What do you think about this chapter?

Okay, so there is a need of an A/N today.

I do not write for compliments. I write for feedback. For people who have themselves in my PM account, check the PM and like and comment even without reading the chapter, I love you guys, but I'm not here today to talk about those people. I want to talk to those who silently read each update and choose to remain silent. In my opinion, if you spend 10 minutes reading one complete chapter, it takes just one minute to write a line about what you loved or what you hated or what you wanted Arnav to do or what you wanted Khushi to not do. You don't want to disclose your identity here, it's fine with me! Come, I am there through PMs and scraps. Come, talk to me. Tell me how is it going. Trust me, every positive review makes me happy and every constructively criticised one makes me happier! I want feedback. Comment, scrap, PM anything.

And all those who do take out time to post such beautiful comments, I love you dil se 🤗 I reply to all the comments, so do check out my replies as well!

And don't forget to let me know your views about this chapter!
