CHAPTER 26. THE CLIMAX
Arnav strode into Shantivan head held high. His strides long, his anger at its peak, Arnav Singh Raizada looked like bat out of hell. The servants took one look at him and scrambled away.
"Marry Prem she says!", Arnav growled as he threw himself on the sofa, "Go ahead! Marry him! I don't give a damn! Marry Prem or not is not my concern she says!", He sat up straight, "Ha! It is definitely not my concern! Let her marry anybody she wants. Marry Prem for all I care! Marry him! But I bet you will be unhappy with him!"
Arnav stood up and started to pace, "I bet you Khushi! I bet you that you will be never happy with him! Never happy I say! Because he will never challenge you the way I do! He will never fight with you the way I do! Marry Prem she says! Go ahead! Go ahead Khushi, I bet you will come back to me in a year. Yes Khushi! In a year! You will come back. Begging. Sobbing. Asking me to help you. But gaah! I won't help you! Do what you want! Beg, plead, grovel, I don't care!" He threw himself back on the sofa and glared at a distance.
Just then Arnav's eyes fell on the TV remote kept on the coffee table with a paper attached to it. He snatched the paper and frowned at what was written on it. The message was from Aakash, "Bhai! I am going to meet Di. Leaving you with some food for thought. Check it out! Ciao!"
Arnav was still frowning when he switched on the TV. He took in a sharp breath as Khushi's face loomed on the screen. Arnav's eyes widened. It must be the video recordings of Khushi's trainings! Bah! I don't want to see her! He raised the remote to shut the TV but found that he couldn't. Just then Khushi giggled on the screen and Arnav couldn't look away. Aakash seemed to be teasing Khushi and Khushi was laughing. Involuntarily Arnav smiled. Her happiness was contagious. His hand dropped down and he kept the remote on the table as he watched Khushi wear the heels. He felt his heart beat quicken as he saw her long legs. His mind went back to the bathroom incident. Two spots of red formed on his cheeks as the memory evoked strong emotions out of him. Next was about Khushi arguing with him about Chandu Ke Chacha and She sells Seashells! He let out a loud laugh at her words. Oh Khushi! Only you!
"Oh Khushi! I will miss you! I will miss you so much!", Arnav didn't even realise that he was speaking loudly. He smiled as on the screen Khushi danced with Arnav. He remembered the almost kiss and slowly his mind turned to all those moments he spent with Khushi. "I will miss that girl!", Arnav again started to speak out loud without realising it, "I will miss her gaalis, her prancing around, her habit of crooning songs", his mind turned to the time when he saw her dance on the bed, "I will miss her dancing on the bed too. I will miss her cooking, her retorts, her laughter, her giggling." He stood up in surprise, "Its been barely a day and I already miss her totally. I am used to seeing her face in early morning, used to having her hover around to make sure I ate, I have gotten used to her face, her voice, her presence. I was independent before her. But now I am totally dependent on her." Arnav continued to be in shock as he carded his fingers through his hair in confusion, "I cannot breathe without her. I cannot survive without her."
Arnav sat down with his head in his hands, "What am I to do without you Khushi? What am I to do?" Just then Arnav felt a hand gently land on his shoulder. He looked up in duress only for his eyes to widen, "Khushi!", he whispered.
Khushi smiled at him.
Arnav couldn't believe she was here, "But... how? You...? Weren't you...? I mean... You had left me!", Arnav gasped out. Khushi smiled softly, "I came to get my things while others were out!", she pointed to the bag lying by her feet, "But then I heard what you said and I just couldn't leave!" Arnav's eyes widened and he realised this was his chance. His chance to have Khushi back in his life.
Khushi could only look in shock as Arnav suddenly went down on his knees, grabbed her hands in both of his and started to plead with her, "Please Khushi! Don't leave me! I cannot survive without you. I can survive without my business, my fame, my life, but not you! Please Khushi! Please don't leave me!"
A tear trickled from Khushi's eyes and down her cheek at Arnav's sweet words. He was changing! She could see it. The man who never bowed down in front of anybody was today on his knees in front of her. He had left behind his ego for their love. What else did she want? Khushi felt hope bloom in her heart. If he can let go of his ego just for her, he will respect her and her opinions too, right? With a wide grin on her face, Khushi replied, "Yes Arnav! I won't leave you!" Arnav's pleading expression turned into happiness as he stood up and hugged Khushi tightly. Khushi also hugged him back just as tight.
"I love you Khushi", Arnav whispered and Khushi pulled back to look at him in shock. Arnav gave her a soft smile, "Haan Khushi! I love you!" She let out a laugh and pulled him back into her arms, "I love you too Arnav!", her soft voice echoed in the room. Arnav felt his heart skip a beat and he pulled Khushi closer. For few minutes, both remained in each other's arms and then Arnav slowly pulled away and cupped Khushi's face in his hands. He placed a kiss on her forehead and Khushi looked at him with nothing but pure love in her eyes.
Suddenly Arnav was filled with excitement. He grabbed her hand and started to drag her with him, "Chalo!"
"Where?", Khushi asked as she laughed at Arnav's enthusiasm. Arnav dragged her towards the door, "Naaniji ke paas!", Arnav huffed.
Khushi couldn't stop herself from teasing him, "English Arnav!", her voice held a mischievous tilt.
Arnav did not reply. He simply threw her a glare and continued to drag her away. Khushi dug her heels and Arnav was jerked back. He turned around and saw Khushi refusing to move.
"Khushi! Lets go!", Arnav whined.
Khushi frowned, "No! Unless and until you tell me why we are going I am not moving!", there was amusement in her voice.
Arnav closed his eyes trying to calm himself down and then he turned to her with a wide smile on his face, "We are going to meet Naaniji so that she can get us married ASAP!"
Khushi's eyes widened and she chuckled, "Oh ho! You seemed to be in so much hurry!"
Arnav huffed, "Of course I am in hurry. Come on! Lets go! I want to get married next month! I have a meeting out of country next month and I want to take you with me."
He continued to drag her. Khushi was surprised at his answer and allowed him to drag her for few seconds before she dug her heels again. She looked at Arnav in shock. He is serious. He is not kidding. He does want to get married next month!
"Arnav! You have yet to propose to me you know!", Khushi commented.
Arnav rolled his eyes, "Arre! Whats the need for proposal? I love you! You love me! Matter ends!"
Khushi was now alarmed but Arnav simply ignored her and continued to talk, "I have decided Khushi! We will have a simple wedding. I hate the frivolities, you see. We will go to honeymoon in Mauritius. I heard it is best for couples. And then...", Arnav continued to speak.
Khushi could only watch with jaw dropped open as Arnav continued to plan their whole future. She stumbled back a little. He had still not changed. He may have kept his ego aside to plead her not to leave him but he still didn't respect her! He was making decisions without consulting her. He even forgot her dreams in process. She took a deep breath as she made a shocking decision.
Arnav was still rambling about their future together when Khushi suddenly wrenched her hand away from Arnav's grip. Arnav looked at her with confusion but Khushi had a blank expression on her face. She came to stand in front of him and spoke, "I was wrong. I thought if you kept your ego aside to plead in front of me, you thought of me as your equal. I thought from now on you will respect me. But I was wrong. I am still a waitress for you. I am sorry Arnav but this relationship won't work!"
Arnav simply blinked, "Khushi...", he whispered suddenly feeling as if he was thrown right into the middle of the sea.
Khushi smiled knowingly, "You don't care about my dreams Arnav. And I am not sure you ever will. You don't understand me. You fell for me, but never thought about what I want. I am sorry Arnav. But such a relationship has no future. Without mutual respect, a relationship will turn bitter. Love is not enough Arnav."
Khushi turned to walk away just as Arnav came out of his stupor. He grabbed her hand and turned her around roughly. Khushi spun around in surprise. Arnav grabbed her by her arms and pulled her close, his eyes glaring at her.
"What rubbish are you talking about? How dare you think of leaving me!", he hissed.
Khushi lost her cool. She pushed him away and before he knew it, she was shouting at him, "Enough Arnav enough! Enough about you!" She threw her hands into the air, "Why is everything for you, about you Arnav?"
Arnav looked baffled so Khushi began to explain, "You love me, so obviously you should marry me. Who cares whether I love you or not! You want to marry next month so we will get married next month. Who cares if I want to get married so soon or not! Who cares Arnav!" She looked at him with accusation in her eyes, "I have dreams too Arnav! But you didn't take a single second to think about how you will help me fulfil it despite me having repeatedly tell you what my dreams are! You! You! Its always you to you! And why is that?"
Khushi shook her head, "You never behave like this with Naaniji, Aakash or Anjaliji! You listen to their thoughts, their opinions, their decisions, but when it comes to me you take me for granted. Why Arnav? Just because I am a middle class girl? I am sorry Arnav! But I cannot be in a relationship with a person who doesn't even consider me worth asking opinions!" Khushi starting shaking her head as tears fell down her cheeks.
"What are you trying to say Khushi?", Arnav's voice was harsh whisper as he looked at her aghast.
Khushi wiped her tears and looked at him with determination, "Arnav! What I am trying to say is that you can give me love, but as long as you think of me as a waitress you can never give me happiness! I will be left with nothing but tears and I am not a doormat who would accept it. I am sorry Arnav! But when it comes down to my dignity and your love, I chose my dignity!"
Khushi raised her head high and looked at Arnav with pride, "Between me and you, I chose me!" With that, she turned around and walked away from the house and away from Arnav's life forever.
Arnav stood there for almost 10 minutes before his legs buckled and he fell down on his knees.
Did you expect that end? In the movie, the girl comes back quietly and the guy continues to show attitude to her. So of course, I didn't like that ending. I had to change it. But don't worry. AK will be back together. Just check the next update!
Thank you, take care and have fun,
Kalpana
