Ranveer looked into Priyanka's direction. She had pretended not to notice. Instead she was quickly processing what she had just heard. For a moment there, she was offended, realizing she was the thing he had referred to. But she brushed that off quite easily. One of the advantages that came along with all the stake outs she had been on with her ACP, was the fact she had grown more resilient and was able to keep her focus on the bigger picture. With a doubt, she had broken out of her shell.
Priyanka had tried to follow his phone conversation and fill in the blanks. She had quickly filtered out keywords such as beautiful, party, tonight.
Why can't he speak to me like that? In that sweet tone of voice of his? Am I not beautiful to him? Why is that girl even calling him? Does she not know the man has work to do?! God Prinku, why are you even so possessive over this man.. This gorgeous, dashing man.. With an incredible trained lean body...' Priyanka gulped at these thoughts. She was thirsty.. Thirsty for water as much as for his love and attention..
She reprimanded herself, to focus again on the here and now of the events. What celebration? What party was Nisha referring to? Tonight.. Today it's Friday, the 13th.. Ahaa.. Fright Nights Events.. Oh that is so fun! I love horror..'
Her phone rang. It was a message from Annika.
"Hi Priyanka, what time are you coming home? I can't keep helping you sneak in and out the house! Oh and Dadi asked to come home early tomorrow. She is afraid you might have forgotten all about Lohri. Preparations are in full progress. Bonfire will start around 6 p.m. There will be party sharty, so come home early!"
OMG... I totally forgot.. Lohri.. Obviously, he stopped celebrating after his sister...'
The drive home had been a rather silent one. She must be so tired.' he thought. Ranveer had dropped Priyanka off at the mansion. Before he left he asked her: "Listen, do you have plans for tomorrow?"
If Priyanka did not know better, she would have thought he was asking her out. Silly goose' she thought. These mixed signals she was experiencing were confusing her.
"Yes.. Festivities at home with the family.."
"Whole night?" Ranveer asked persistently.
"Yes.. No.. Yes.. I mean yes, I have plans but not the whole night. Why? You are welcome to come join us too?"
Ranveer had been looking forward to spend the evening with Priyanka alone. Away from everyone else, the work, the car and the stake outs. But he accepted the invitation, hoping he could eventually convince her to spend some time alone together.
"I will come by in the evening then. Perhaps we can hang out afterwards. If you would like to."
OMG.. Is he actually trying to ask me out? Well.. Finally! It was about time! If I would like to? I would love to!'

Time had finally started to heal his wounds. What started out as a nightmare he could not awake from turned into an intense longing to stay and experience the moments together with her. Something he thought which could never be possible, but the contrary had happened. He had fallen for her, deeply and rapidly.
He rested a bit before he would get ready for the night. He laid down on the couch, listening to his voice mail messages. He opened, one of his precious possessions which he had saved carefully. It was a video message his sister had sent him. Two years ago to be precise. A sweet message to congratulate him on his birthday. He replayed it several times, before he dozed off into a light sleep.

"Sorry to disturb you at this hour Miss Oberoi. I know, it's quite a short notice but I hope you will be able to join the surprise party. It will be a small gathering at my place. Nothing really fancy. We just want ACP Randhawa to enjoy himself. And.. I believe he will be pleased if you could make it."
Priyanka hung up the phone as she entered the hallway to her house. Initially, she had been very surprised by Sushant Shinde calling her, and that too at this hour. Surprise was soon replaced by shock. She had spent several hours with Ranveer in the car. He did not even mention anything about his birthday.
Annika was pacing back and forth, waiting for Priyanka. "Finally! I thought you would never come home. Any progress in that case? Did the ACP catch those horrible men? Priyanka..? Anything the matter? You look puzzled."
"Annika, I need to arrange a surprise birthday party.. For tomorrow! And I need you to help me out..."

Priyanka laid in bed very late, after working out all details with Annika. Priyanka knew, Annika would for sure help her convince the family to change tomorrow's plans, for her pleasure. Her happiness. Shinde had been contacted to inform everyone that the venue had changed. She would wake up very early to get everything started.
As she closed her heavy eyes, she could see the vivid memories of Ranveer so far. The animosity changed into friendship. A friendship which had slowly but steadily evolved to something stronger. Something more intense.
It had been almost a month since the Christmas party. A lot had changed since then. But then again, a lot had remained the same as well. They had both felt a strong attraction towards each other.
At least, their common interest had helped them grow closer to each other and combine forces to trap and arrest a vicious gang who was involved with abduction of infants. Young Sahil had told her what had happened to him months ago, and with help of Ranveer, the ball started rolling. And they had continued to catch another gang. It had been a victory for them. But more so for Priyanka, as this was a big step towards the young more confident adult that had shown glimpses of herself so far. She would be forever thankful to Ranveer, who was responsible for this beautiful gift to her.
It reminded her.. "A gift for Ranveer?" She would worry about that tomorrow.

"Sir, ACP Randhawa just entered the gate."
"Thanks.." Shivaay hung up the phone and spoke in a loud voice to the group of party people. "ACP Randhawa has arrived! Assume your positions."
"Quick! Everyone hide.. And remember, when I give the signal, Rudi bhaiya will turn all lights on and we all yell surprise ok?"
Priyanka was excited to see Ranveer's reaction. Would he like the party? Would he like her present? Her cheeks had a beautiful warm pinkish glow. "Come on, quickly hide.." She said once more.

"Hi Priyanka.."
"Oh.. Hi Ranveer.. You are early.."
Priyanka was nervous but somehow managed to speak calmly to him. The only thing which could give her away was her twitching and fiddling with her dupatta.
"Early? Party would start at 6 p.m. right? I thought I saw some cars outside.. But.. Nobody is here yet??"
"NO.. I mean no.. Nobody is here yet. It's just you.. And me. All alone.. Nobody around.. Yup.. Not a soul.."
Ranveer wondered why she was acting so strangely. Why is she pointing out so clearly that we are all alone here? Unless.. She is waiting for me to say it first.."
"These are for you.. Flowers.."
"Thank you.."
"Priyanka, you look beautiful.."
"Thank you.."
"Annika didi.. What to do? She is not giving the signal!" Rudra whispered confused.
"Om.. What's going on here? Why is he giving her flowers? It's his birthday. And why is she so damn polite thanking him, giggling at him?"
"Shivaay.. Their conversation seems short and polite. Awkward maybe. But their eyes have said already what was never meant for our ears in the first place."
"Billu Ji, just relax. It's all part of our surprise."
Ranveer moved closer towards Priyanka. She had forgotten all about The Plan' as she had lost herself in his gaze. An invisible magnetic field was tangible.
Annika felt it was time to step in and intervene. "Rudra..! On the count of 3, you will turn on the lights before your brother goes insane and kills me!"
"One.. Two.. THREE!"
SURPRISE!!!!
Rudra and Annika were the first ones to run forward and to congratulate Ranveer and got the party started.

The party had been a great success and had ended only because people were just too drunk or too tired to dance, eat and drink more.
Priyanka walked with Ranveer to his car. Their driver would arrange to bring him home safely.
"The party was really too good.. Really cool."
"Thank you. Everyone helped out. Especially Annika, Nisha and Sushant."
"Nisha and Shinde... Our dates, remember? They are dating now.. But it's a secret.. Very hush hush.."
He placed his index finger on his lips, signaling to not speak about it. They both smiled.
"You know.. I didn't buy you a very huge expensive gift.. I thought to give you something special.. Something personal.. Just unwrap it at home.."
She ran inside the mansion with her poor restless heart pounding, trying to escape her body. It felt scared and vulnerable. She felt scared and vulnerable. Just like that, although feeling what she felt, she had stepped up her game and taken control of her destiny. It was his move now...

A Gift from the Heart
He neatly unwrapped the thin shiny blue paper which had protected and covered a beautiful gift.
It was a stylish silver photo frame, in which a collage of their photos were to be found. Photos of the Christmas Party. He had forgotten about it.. She had been dancing all night long and taken pictures. Selfies. In the middle, there was a letter or a poem maybe, printed with another one of their pictures on the background.

It had been the best day, the best birthday so far. He grinned and smiled, not able to sleep. Thinking of something creative, worthy of her style. What to say and what to do? Unexpectedly, she had taken the first step. The ball was now at his court and tomorrow he would make his move.
He stared at their pictures and before he finally fell into a good deep sleep, he mumbled: "Goodnight my brave princess."
