A Certain Happiness
Genre: Angst/Family
Characters: ACP Ranveer Singh Randhawa, Shinde
Summary: Reasons why ACP Randhawa refuses to celebrate his birthday.
ACP Ranveer Singh Randhawa was not keen on celebrating his birthday.
He justified said actions (or rather, his lack thereof) with reasons that were absolutely legitimate.
For one, who celebrated a day closer to their death?
Essentially, that's all that a birthday was to him - one step closer to the inevitable.
Ranveer felt that it would be almost hypocritical to be happy on such a day, when he liked to spend most of his time cursing God for inventing the bottomless pit that was death. He hated death.
Death was black.
It couldn't be redeemed.
No one could say that someone's death was for the best - he would like to see someone try.
Even in all the years that he had dealt with criminals, one more notorious than the other, he maintained that no one deserved to die. Not because they were particularly priceless, or treasured, but because of the line of dead souls that they left in their wake. The people that leave, go flightless and free, while the people that stay are the ones that are tortured, the ones in pain, the ones dying every day.
They are innocent, and yet, they are the ones being punished.
He knew that feeling really well. Nisha had gotten off easy enough, hadn't she?
Now, it was only he that had to suffer alone.
And the other reason?
Well, Ranveer liked to say that he simply didn't have the time.
It reminded him of something that smarmy Shivaay Singh Oberoi would say; in a deep, booming voice as he looked at his Rolex, and did that stupid thing with his hair.
Oh, but I just don't have the time.
This was the only part of the lavish lifestyle that he liked to indulge himself in, really. Time was so very important for a busy man, and silly, insignificant nonsense like celebrating your birthday was almost laughable.
He turned a blind eye to the fact that even India's criminals took a break from time to time. It wasn't like he always had a case on hand, or constantly had to remain on duty - but maybe that was easier to say than acknowledge the truth.
A small reason that liked to annoy him on days such as this one, was that he didn't have any one to celebrate his birthday with.
He had friends, heaps of them.
The vendor who sold him cheap corn on Tuesday, Shinde and his lackeys, and even the homeless man who lived on the corner of his street.
Okay, so maybe he wasn't Mr. Popular.
Not that he really cared.
But even so, memories of a childhood filled with mirth and friendship drifted through his senses. His beaming younger sister, Nisha, who liked to be the first to wish him, at exactly 12am. His parents, teary-eyed, wrapping him in their arms as they told stories of his younger days. The kids from the neighbouring suburbs, all with bags and boxes filled with gifts, who came to visit.
The candles, the mess of chocolate fudge cake in his mouth.
Happiness.
If only...

The day is going painfully slowly, and Ranveer finds himself counting down hours til its over. He decides that even though he doesn't have a shift today, he'll let his officers have the night off, and work himself.
So he does just that, and all thoughts of a certain event are conveniently shelved away as he sorts through the stack of paperwork on his desk, and occasionally pins photos and evidence on the display board.
It's nearly 11pm at night, when Shinde bursts into the police station, a box in hand.
Ranveer is already on his feet, and as the familiar rush of excitement fills his veins, he edges towards the box cautiously.
"It's a bomb, isn't it?"
The assuredness in his voice temporarily stuns Shinde, but as his boss fixes him with his customary glare, the man replies, voice almost choked.
"Sir, please don't fire me but - "
"Why the heck would I fire you? Unless you're the one who planted the bomb!" Ranveer's eyes widened comically, as his hand involuntarily reached towards his holster.
He didn't really need to, because the criminal himself had all but collapsed on the floor, his hands raised upwards in surrender.
"Please don't shoot, sir. It's not what - "
"Aah, what guilt can do to someone!" Ranveer smirked as he reached over to his desk to grab his favourite pair of handcuffs. So, he did have a bit of a soft spot for Shinde, but if the man was a terrorist, then he wouldn't hesitate to arrest him.
The ACP grabbed Shinde's arms down into a lock, so he could fasten the cuffs around his wrists but something the man was muttering caught his attention.
"This is why Ma always tells me not to be so nice - I wanted to celebrate his birthday, but he's hellbent on arresting me!"
Ranveer froze.
His grip slackened, and Shinde took that instant to get up from the floor, and scramble away from me.
"Did you just say that you wanted to celebrate - "
"Your birthday, Sir!" Shinde exclaimed, relieved that he was no longer being deemed a terrorist. He opened the box on the table, and showed his boss the contents.
A slightly squished chocolate fudge cake.
"How did you know?" Ranveer asked, voice choked and eyes burning.
"Oh, DCP Anand had me sort out personal detail files, and yours was open, so..." Shinde replied, tentatively. He had been expecting his boss to yell at him, or worse, fire him, but the man before him wore an almost childlike happiness as he offered him a piece of birthday cake.
That night, Ranveer celebrates his birthday after seven years.
Between pieces of chocolate cake, and memories of his childhood, he finds a certain happiness that he had long forgotten.

Happy Birthday, Ayush!
Sorry if this wasn't up to scratch everyone, and too angsty for a birthday shot. Please be kind!
