Chapter 122

"What do you think Manik?"

He turned to her to say something, but stopped to study her wind-kissed face. Eyes closed, arms spread wide, chin slightly tilted up and the wind blowing her long careless tresses away from her serene face, drawing random shapes in the air. He had almost lost himself in the tranquil smile on her face when he decided , to ask her instead, if she liked this matchbox of a flat in a rather non-descript locality.

"What do you think Nandini?"

"Me?" her face lit up at once, as she continued inhaling the breeze with closed eyes. "Manik, I absolutely love it. Couldn't have gotten a better house."

He knew she had liked it. It was written all over her face. Thank God, her eyes were closed, or else she would have seen his brows twisted in a frown. But how could she like it, how could any sane person, like, this dusty little flat covered in cobwebs. Tiny didn't even begin to describe it, it was like the Tata Nano, forcefully marketed as a car when in reality , it was at best an auto with doors.

He could barely swallow. She liked it...she liked that betel stained staircase?!!!? and that tiny little landing area on each floor where all the doors to all the flats opened at once like a sabzi mandi. And those doors..how tacky were they, pale blue with large patches of brown, where the paint had chipped off, exposing the underlying plywood. As if this wasn't enough, they had to guard it with a grill, which made the most irritating screeching sound when the kids tugged at them, pulling and pushing as if they were toys. The lift was a nightmare, less than 50 sq. feet wide, it was scary and despicably cramped. The biggest joke however, was the amount, the broker was charging as rent, 20 k? 20 freaking k?

"Don't you like it?" she asked, sensing his silence.

He didn't know what to tell her. They just had 3 lakhs worth of cash and her salary of 30k. How could he tell her that this place gave him a headache, the musty smell inside the long abandoned flat almost made him want to puke. How could he tell her, he hadn't pictured them like this, here, and that's precisely why he had wanted her to wait till he could afford what they deserved. But without a penny in his pocket, and no job yet, he couldn't possibly ask her to go see a flat in upscale juhu or bandra or even lokhandwala. Manik felt small, pitiful and utterly helpless.

An uncomfortable silence fell over them as Manik couldn't bring himself to speak his mind.

Nandini took a deep breath and finally opened her eyes. How time changes people! Had it been just a couple of days ago, Manik would not have wasted a single minute checking out this apartment. Its shabby exterior would have been enough to piss him off. And had she still dragged him inside, he would have cursed her left, right and center. He would have argued with her saying "Are you kidding me Nandini..who lives in a place like this? Agar yeh joke tha to I didn't like it, abhi chalo yahan se."

But today he barely uttered a word. She knew he wasn't happy, she knew he was keeping his true feelings from her, struggling alone to come to terms with reality. And it scared her, because that's how people slip back into darkness. First they grow silent, and then they slowly trace their steps back and lock themselves up in the parallel universe they have created in their heads. She could live with anything, except watch him grow into a stranger once again, inch by inch, one day at a time.

The more time changed him, the more she had to change as well. The quieter he grew, the harder she had to strain her ears to understand. And it wasn't just today. Since that evening at his home, he had been mostly quiet, inwardly drawn and thoughtful. His silence, sometimes it made sense to her, sometimes it didn't. Like now, it could mean a hundred things, he could be feeling helpless, or incompetent or may be his male ego was hurting, how would she know which one was it. How could she continue to be the same vivacious Nandini, blabbering gibberish to her Manik, without the fear of being judged, when she had to weigh every word she spoke now, blunt their edges, for who knew which one could potentially pierce through his heart.

But this phase was also teaching her a worthy lesson. No relationship is ever constant, the dynamics keep changing with time and circumstances. You can never raise your hands up and say "Ok now I understand him fully". You can never slack back in your chair and claim that you have done all that there was to be done. What holds good today might be redundant tomorrow. People might have to start from scratch, over and over again. And the only thing that doesn't and shouldn't change in this transient world is the love & compassion one has for the other.

Years ago, she had promised to shine for him, and though she had done it from time to time, it wasn't until now that she fully understood, the weight of her promise. Protecting someone from his own darkness is much harder than protecting him from the world and to do that, one sometimes has to forget and forego one's own existence.

She picked her bearings "Acha batao what is the best thing about living in Mumbai?"

"You" he replied without batting an eyelid and her lips curved into a shy smile. Just the assurance she needed now.

"Uff no... the best thing about Mumbai is wo jo yahan se dikhta hai" She took his hand and pointed it towards the vast expanse of sea lying ahead of them. "Pata hai Mumbai mein rehkar yeh view milna kitna mushkil hai? Tumhe isse bade, isse behtar ghar mil jayenge, par yeh view nahi milega"

"But Nandini, didn't u want a 4000 sq feet penthouse with a balcony with enough space for our friends and your family? You told me once. And from that 4000 to this... this 450 sq feet pigeon nest, what a downgrade!!!" He looked away, lost.

"Manik, I know you are not used to this..this kind of dwelling.. I can understand..."

"No Nandini, its not my false vanity. Yes, I have always stayed at expensive 5 - 7 star places, I am used to that kind of a life style, but that doesn't mean I can't adjust. But when it comes to you, I want to have the best for you...and.." He couldn't finish.

"Main to isi mein khush hun Manik, you know there is a saying 'Home is not where you are from, it is where you belong. Some of us travel the whole world to find it. Others find it in a person'. Haan abhi thora dirty hai, but don't worry we will make it all sparkling. Aur yeh jo locality hai na, middle class locality, wo khule huye doors, wo bahar latakte huye bacche, gossiping aunties, to trust me, this is another flavour of life, no showing off, no pretentions you get what you see. Pehle pehle thora sa odd lagega, but with time yeh life bhi achi lagne lagegi, jaise now you like auto se travel karna.. Aur apni yeh choti si balcony, yahan hum baith to nahi sakte, but cuddle karke ek sath sunset to dekh sakte hain. You know Manik, chote ghar ka sabse bara advantage kya hota hai?"

He looked questioningly at her.

"You have to bump into each other even when you don't want to. To socho ki we have just had a nasty fight, which we invariably will, to I cant lock myself inside a room and cry for two hours. I would have to give in to your manaofying, to your tasteless filter coffees and random dances. And tumhare liye to double good hai, you don't have to run after me all the time, I would always be right infront of your eyes, within an arm's distance from you. Manik can you believe hamari shaadi ho rahi hai...God main itni excited hoon, hume fir chup chup ke nahi milna parega, I wont have to crave for your hugs, I will see u before I fall asleep and I will see when I open my eyes. And us khushi ke age nothing matters, falt ka size and shape and square foot to bilkul bhi nahi."

He grinned, looking down and then nodded as the grin slowly widened into a smile.

"How do you do it, kaise kar leti ho? How do you manage to find something good in every circumstance?"

"Wo to I was born talented, uska to abhi kuch nahi kar sakte hain."

"Is that why you saw someone worth loving in me..warna main to...almost got written off as a human being" He suddenly asked, looking into her eyes.

His question, all of a sudden and out the blue, threw her off guard for a while. Gathering herself, she thought for a while and then replied " who knows manik, kisne kisko search kiya..whether we found each other or our stars conspired to bring us back together. Because mujhe nahi lagta ki its just been a few years..I have known u for ages, for centuries.. Tumhe dhundna was not like kisi buri cheez mein achhai ko dhundna.. Nopes..it was like home coming..jaise kanhi my heart always knew that you were the one, you were always the one, and heart se bhi pehle, the fireflies knew, before I had even seen you."

"Acha meri maa, I got it. Ok so going by your choice and mind it, strictly by you choice, we will finalize this apartment. But I still hate this place ok?"

"As you say sir" She got up to leave when manik called her.

"Nandini I have to tell you something."

"yea say na.."

"I might try modelling" he spoke slowly, cautiously observing the colour on her face change. "You know that's the only thing open for me right now...without a degree or experience, no one would give me a chance" he began explaining.

"Manik" She looked into his eyes, and took his hand in hers "You don't need to explain ok? Tumhe jo sahi lage..do it. I will support you no matter what. Remember I am your partner in good and bad, your struggle is mine, your journey is our journey."

"Nandini...don't you have anything to say..i mean"

They both had the same thing going on in their minds and but neither addressed it directly until Nandini decided to, "Manik... tum life mein kuch bhi karo, I know you will be the best. Because you are that kind of a person, who can't ever be second best. I don't care if its modelling or managing a company. You will rock either and both. The only thing I wanna tell you is, don't forget your music. Not just music but YOUR MUSIC, because it flows in your blood, when your heart beats, it makes music. When you had no one else in your life, music gave you solace and you must stay loyal to it even when you have everything. Its ok if it doesn't become your profession, but let it always remain your passion."

"Thank you Nandini" She didn't ask why all of a sudden he was thanking her for she knew precisely why.

"I have my selfish reasons too.. Music brought us together Manik..Music binds us like a musical tie, we wither exist together or we don't."

Eventually they did finalize the apartment and got busy in cleaning it up. Their love was unique, different from the rest of the world, how could their marriage be any different? They weren't shopping or getting pampered by their families like most fortunate people do a day and a half before their marriage. Instead, they were covered up in dust and sweat, giving shape to their love nest. Love has no definite shape, no perfect definition and no fixed address. Different people find it in different people. Some seek it in candle lit dinners, some seek it in a walk on the beach and some like Manik and Nandini seek it in each other. One dims and the other shines..

Update :)

What I'm feeling is that right now...Nandini is burning her comforts and Illuminating Manik's life. Primarily both of them have layers.. which not all are permitted to explore...but once you dive deep...you find out that its simple - All they signify is - Love above all.

If its true love.. it would rise against all odds..what if Nandini couldn't reach out to him in Switzerland. Her sacrificing nature shows the amount of love she would have showered on him before. but yes fate has the exclusive authority to design destiny.

So now they are ready...ready with four walls which they can deem as home. Love would compensate for the penthouse and a lavish garden.

Manik should now mend himself and of course Nandini promises to be his tool.

Loved the update..waiting for the next part.
