Heyy!
I'm half done the update! Basically it is the length of one of my normal posts, but since I've delayed it for so long, I'm just working on it to make a SUUPER long part 😆

And thank you so much!! It did go really well 😳
In fact I ended off the semester on a pretty high note, so hopes are up to receive similar grades :)

And also thank you for being so patient and kind and understanding
And this applies to everyoneee
You guys are the best

NOTE:
Wow, it's been so many months since I have last done this 😔 I know I say it all the time, but I'm realllyy sorry about the delay. Even after exams, I felt stuck in a writer's block. I wrote so many things but wasn't convinced enough, therefore the process of writing this chapter felt gruesome.
But I hope I was able to maintain the flow of the FF with this chapter considering that was something I do not want to risk at all.

As my way of apologizing to you, this part is SUPER long. A little more than 2,500 words actually. So I hope the wait is made at least somewhat worth it!

I hope you enjoy it!! Please don't forget to let me know your thoughts/feedback in the comments 😳
And once again, thank you for being so patient and kind with me. I really appreciate it
🤗

PS. A bit of self-advertising, but if you guys are really enjoying this FF and think there's a great potential, please do share it with your friends! The readers of this FF on IF seem to be declining. Though I don't mind, but I'd love more input on here as well!
So please don't hesitate to do so if you think this story is good enough for that :)

Lots of love,
Hinal 😳

PART THIRTY TWO - TODAY'S SPECIAL

"Don't do this to me Randhir. Don't give me hope," I said dejectedly.

"Maybe I want to?" he said coolly before leaving me there, breathless.

--

I followed behind him, still grasping the reality of his words. He held the main door for me and we were soon walking towards Vidushi's apartment.

The silence, this time, felt comfortable, though it really just ended up encouraging my questions to surface, loud and clear.

What did he mean by that? Did he really see a future for us? Together? The last thought made me smile. There couldn't be anything else that could make me happier, or so I thought at that moment any way. Only to be proven wrong at the very next instance though.

The sight in front of me melted my heart: Randhir patting Riaan's head, their hands clasped together as he led Riaan towards me.

"Look who's here!!" he chimed. "Mommy!!" Riaan exclaimed and hugged me. I lifted him up in my arms, "How are you baby??"

--

--

He flashed a semi-toothless grin to his mother. I turned around and smiled. Farzi as a mother was everything I had imagined and beyond.

Walking into the kitchen, I could feel myself grabbing the attention of the couple of the hour. Vidushi raised her eyebrow at first, but as Sanyukta walked into the kitchen behind me, she smirked. I initially bit my tongue to wipe that smile off my face, but then I gave up. Why did I have to pretend I was unhappy? In fact, I hadn't felt this much in sync with my feelings in years, nor with myself either. An arm snaked around my waist, and even though I knew it wasn't her, just an image of that crossing my mind brought with it a new surge of ecstasy through my body.

"What's up Shekhawat? Someone has been smiling quite the bit tonight," Vidushi smirked. I pulled her into a headlock, "Why bother asking when you already know the answer?" I rolled my eyes, not without adding another smile though.

--

--

Parth offered to drop Riaan and myself home again, and I of course accepted. But before leaving, I went to see Randhir who was standing in the balcony. "Randhir..." I trailed off, not knowing whether it was appropriate to ask him or not.

"Yes?" he looked at me as I stopped beside him.

"Are we okay now? I mean, not like together, but like..." I was incessantly rambling on, but he smiled, "I think we are!"

I smiled in response, mainly to myself though. I turned around to look at Riaan, who was fast asleep on the couch, and then looked back at Randhir, recalling just how well they had gotten along earlier on. The recollection sparked a warm feeling to engulf my body, involuntarily leading me to smile.

"I really missed you Farzi," he spoke with his eyes fixated on the view. "Even when things were going well, I never really felt happy. It always felt as if a piece of me was missing. As if it was this gaping hole that was just getting larger with every passing moment!"

I looked at him, and he must have realized so because then he clarified, "I'm not trying to make you feel guilty, but just," he sighed. "I don't know. I guess that's what made me realize that I couldn't really be happy without you. And I don't know where this is going, nor do I know if we can ever go back to what we were, but I do know that I want you to a part of my life, at least as a friend!"

I took a deep breath, "I lost everything in those few years Randhir. You have no idea how much coming back here means to me. And that too coming back to all of you guys. Knowing those people who mean the world to me are once again a part of my life is something I had almost given up hoping for!"

Shifting myself closer to him, I kissed his cheek. "Thank you!" I said truthfully, and he nodded in response, his nod accompanied with a slight smile.

Only as I was about to leave did he speak up, "Join the main branch from Monday Sanyukta. You're back on the original project!"

--

--

We were almost near my apartment now, and while Parth and I were comfortably talking, I couldn't help but feel a slight bit of anxiety taking over. I sighed, contemplating whether sharing my worries with him right now would be taking advantage of the situation. But I began before I could consciously stop; "Parth, I won't lose Riaan right?"

--

Her one question had etched into it millions of worries. I stopped the car on the side of the road, "We're all with you Sanyu! Don't worry okay? We won't let Sameer take away your child!"

"You know Parth," I turned to face him now that he wasn't driving, "I wouldn't have had a problem with mutual custody if he was doing this just to get time with his son, but he's just doing this to get back at me. I never stopped Sameer from seeing Riaan, nor did I put any conditions. But he just sent me a legal notice through his lawyer, asking me to give up custody amicably or he will prove in court that I am incapable of providing for him."

I didn't cry, because I had honestly done enough of that until now, but I felt a strange fear taking over my mind. "All these what ifs are killing me," I admitted, throwing my head back on the seat. "Anyway, thanks for dropping us Parth!"

"One more time you say thanks, I swear I won't ever take the trouble of dropping you!" he scoffed. I hugged Parth from the side and then lifted Riaan in my arms. "Goodnight, see you soon! And we'll figure something out okay? Get some rest tonight!" he said, placing a kiss on Riaan's head.

--

As soon as I got to my apartment, I put Riaan down to bed and sat on the floor by the window with one cup of black coffee. The rest of the night was spent sitting at the same spot, just with more cups of coffee progressively as the hours passed. My thoughts were all over the place, likewise my emotions too. While I was excited for not needing to avoid Randhir anymore, I was also feeling restless. What if being with him leads me to being hopeful? What if I start hoping that we end up together again? Is that not unfair? I put my head in my palms, wanting to get rid of this ambiguity that was creeping its way through my otherwise joyous thoughts.

That in itself was an issue, but what was unknown to me was an even larger issue at hand. Another issue I kept pushing to the back of my mind until I received a text from Saurabh which read, "The hearing got advanced to next week, so we will need to hold an emergency meeting sometime this week!"

I sighed and put the phone away, choosing not to reply right now. I grabbed a blanket and just went to sleep on the couch; I'll deal with this tomorrow.

--

--

I sat on the reclining chair by the kitchen with a cup of black coffee. Recalling the moments that just passed, and reminiscing those that seemed to have occurred in some other lifetime. But for once, I felt myself bridging that gap.

Looking at the clock, I questioned if it would be alright to disturb her at this time; 12:30am it read. I dialled the number and waited for it to ring two to three times, but then I hung up, assuming she must have fallen asleep. I turned my phone off and closed my eyes.

But in the span of the next minute, I heard my telephone ring.

--

"Are you okay?" her worried and breathless voice echoed through the phone as soon as I picked up. I smiled at her worry, "I'm okay Maa!"

"Then why did you call at this time Randhir? I got so worried when you wouldn't pick up your cell phone!"

"I just turned it off actually, And sorry to disturb you! Go back to bed, I'll call tomorrow."

But she was my mother after all, I mean I didn't just randomly get my stubbornness from nowhere; "Call me in 10 minutes and we'll talk. No arguments okay?"

I smiled again, "Okay fine, I'll call you in 10. Bye!"

"Bye," she replied before hanging up.

--

I made myself another cup of coffee before calling her again, this time making it a video call.

"Hi!" she smiled warmly, a cup of Oolong tea in her hand if I was guessing her habits right. "So, what's going on with you?"

I sat there hesitant to go back to the past, but I really needed advice. From someone who has also experienced something similar. "What would you do if dad came back and apologized for everything? What if he has changed? Would you be able to forgive him and give him another chance?" I voiced out all at once after a tremendous amount of hesitation.

Sipping her tea, she took a while to respond, "Randhir, him and I were never on the same page in our relationship. Even if he does feel apologetic, that doesn't change the fact that he and I just don't get along! But why are you asking me this now?"

I sighed, "Do you remember Sanyukta?"

She pursed her lips, "Your girlfriend from FITE?"

"Ex-girlfriend!" I quickly added, a little too reflexively though.

"Oh yes I remember her, sweet girl. But you guys broke up right?"

I nodded, "Well, she's back."

"And you aren't sure what to do?" I shook my head in response.

"Honey, the relationship you two shared was entirely different than the one your father and I shared. Not only were you two in love with one another, but you were willing to sacrifice for each other! To compare my relationship with yours is unfair, don't you think?"

"I guess. But what if your situation was like mine? What would you do as me?"

She took a seemingly long pause before telling me to give her a moment. "What are you doing?" I asked her, to which she said, "Taking you back to the past."

--

--

"Harsh have you entirely lost it?" I screamed out. Blaming me for ignoring Randhir was one thing, but accusing me of staying at work to "flirt" with other men? That was pushing it way past the boundary; even for him this was crossing the limits.

Randhir was seething in anger for having been invited to yet-another-planned-dinner-turning-into-an-unplanned-dinner-fiasco. "I don't even know why you two bother inviting me over. I'd rather happily pretend I have no family. It's better than this crap!"

In frustration, he pushed away his plate and left without so much as even a goodbye.

"See what you did?" I lowered my head into my hands, angry at the turn of events. While our marriage had never been smooth, it had only gotten worse with Harsh's progressive alcoholism.

He pounded the table and snarled, "You bitch! Can't you see you're the one destroying this family? This whole idea of a divorce is just for you to make me look bad in front of my own child."

While I am not the one to hold back, I had had enough now. I walked away from the table and slammed the door shut to my bedroom. Sitting on my bed, I began contemplating whether I could go on with this lifestyle for any longer. And it was just then that I received a phone call from an unknown number.

"Hello? Mrs. Renuka Shekhawat?"

"It's Ms. Renuka Sanyal, and may I know who's speaking?"

"Umm, sorry. Ms. Renuka Sanyal, this is Sanyukta Agarwal from FITE!"

--

"Wait what? Why did Sanyu..kta call you? When did she call you?"

"It was probably just a while after you left. She was there to talk about something important with you, and so she had heard everything."

I wonder if she was there to...

But I didn't get much chance to ponder on that thought as she continued the story; "She actually asked if she could come in because she wanted to talk to me, and thinking it was about the scholarship she got from our company, I agreed to see her, but not in the house."

--

"Thanks for seeing me on such a short notice!"

"It's fine!" I said as we were seated on a table in the courtyard of the restaurant.

"Ms. Sanyal, I'm here to talk to you about Randhir!"

"Excuse me?" I was seemingly shocked.

"I don't want to be rude and intrude, but as someone who cares a lot about your son and his wellbeing, I'm here to ask you to leave him out of your mess. I'm not taking sides in your family dispute, nor do I have the right to, but I do know that you both have hurt Randhir enough and that I can no longer see him in so much pain because of your divorce!"

I was appalled at her audacity to speak to me in that manner, feeling insulted at the least.

"How dare you Ms. Agarwal? I do not feel the need to entertain your unnecessary comments or opinions on this matter. You may leave!"

But she sat rooted to the chair, not an ounce of fear in her eyes despite the vehemence with which I addressed her. "Fine, I'll leave myself then."

I was just about to storm off when she voiced out one last statement; "Be the mother you've always wanted to be Ms. Sanyal. Protect Randhir from this mess that is only going to hurt him more. I know you care about him as much as I do, and perhaps Mr. Shekhawat does as well, but what you may not realize is how dysfunctional your relationships with him have become. Do something about it before you lose him forever!"

--

"So that's why you didn't want me to testify against dad in the court after that day?"

"I was angry and insulted and hurt by what she implied through her words. But I couldn't deny them either. We had hurt you a lot Randhir, and I don't know about Harsh, but I was very well aware of it. And so I thought about it some more and that's how it all began. I prioritized trying to understand you over trying to get you to understand me, and see where we've reached?"

A touch of endearment was laced in her eyes.

I breathed in deeply, "But why are you telling me now?"

"Because son, if that woman tells you that she is in love with you even now, then I have no doubts about it that she had never stopped loving you."

Perhaps that's all I needed; a little bit of reassurance. She smiled again, picking up on my emotions right away.

"Thanks Maa!"

"Love you beta, take care!"

And for the first time in ages, I went to bed content rather than dreading yet another sleepless night.

Rashii! Thank you so much babe! 🤗
I know I always say this, but you are such a sweetheart 😳
I'm really glad you are enjoying the FF still, and not giving up on it (or me)

I also really thought there was so much potential with the equation between Randhir and his parents, but whatever. I'm glad you are enjoying that in this :)

Since this is my last semester of undergrad, I really can't promise when I will update, but it will come sooner or later 😳

Thank you once again love! Take care ❤️
