The thing about Time is when you want something to happen, Time seems to stand still, making it feel like your wait was an endless one. On the other hand, if you are dreading something and wish it never happened, Time hurtles past you, drawing you to that dreaded moment with the speed of lightning.
Anika felt the truth of this statement as she glanced at the clock that showed it was six in the evening. How the day had flown by! Wasn't it only a little while ago that she was having lunch with Daadi? The Oberois had turned a portion of the West wing of the mansion into a set of rooms to be used as a work space and Billuji mostly stayed there during the day. She had seen him leave the house in a rush at times to attend meetings and what-nots and there was no knowing when he would return from them. In fact, she hadn't seen him all day and held a hope that he must have had some very urgent work come up that would force him to cancel their dinner plan.
Anika knew the SSO wasn't someone who forgave easily and her rudeness to him the other day sat heavy on her conscience. Despite his words, it was difficult to believe that he was actually sorry for anything that he had done or said to her. Initially she had been ecstatic on hearing him say those three long awaited words but then he had gone and pulled that trick on her. Inviting her for dinner to make up for everything!?! Yeah right! Shivay Singh Oberoi had always proved to be a sneaky customer and she well remembered the way he had gone about dismantling the very foundations of the life she had so painstakingly built simply to prove a stupid point. He definitely had something awful planned for her and would stop at nothing till he had humiliated and insulted her to his full satisfaction.
She tapped her pen against the desk, anger rising slowly as she thought back to the horrible things he had done and said. The sheer arrogance with which he had thrust that blank cheque at her! Or the cold fury with which he had accused her of having designs on Om! Designs on Omkara of all people! Really! That Bagad Billa! Well, she had faced much worse than this Billuji! Whatever stupid plan he had up his sleeve, she would be a match for him. If he thought that he'll pull one over her, he had another think coming!
--------------------------------------
Shivay glanced at his watch as the presentation showed no signs of drawing to a close. It was almost 8 o'clock and this meeting appeared to be a never-ending one. He fidgeted with his pen impatiently. If he got home any later than 8:30, he doubted if he would find that Anika waiting for him. He had gone through enough trouble just to get to this point when she would willingly spend time with him. If he cancelled on this dinner, he suspected such an opportunity wouldn't present itself again anytime soon.
With a sigh, Shivay ran his hand through his hair and stood up. The girl making the presentation stopped with a start. He looked around at the upturned faces and said, "Something very urgent has come up. I must leave right away. Nishant,my PA. will be here observing the proceedings. Do carry on."
Then he turned to his PA and nodded before leaving the room. Everyone looked at each other in utter shock as the door swung shut behind him. For the first time in the history of the company,Shivay Singh Oberoi had walked out midway through a meeting.
------------------------------------
Sounds of laughter greeted him as he entered the house.
"Sahil said they were the best paanipuris he had ever tasted."
"Anikadi, we must have a paanipuri party one of these days!"
"Haan, bas aloo thoda kam hona chahiye nahi toh I'll miss out on the fun!"
"Uff! Crybaby, phir se shuru ho gaya with your complaints!"
"Sumo, if you think by keeping me away, you'll get more paanipuris--"
"Arrey! You two! Trust me, you guys are getting as bad as Anika and -- "
Anika sat on one of the sofas in the drawing room with Rudra, Soumya, Priyanka and Om seated around her. They appeared to be in the middle of an animated discussion.
"Bhaiya!" Priyanka spotting him, called out in delight.
"Shivay, you're back early." Om looked at him with a smile on his face.
"But Bhaiya, Chote Papa had just come in to tell us you'll be delayed because of some meeting."
"Arrey, Crybaby, Bade Bhaiya is taking Anikadi out to dinner!"
Rudra and Om had been clueless about this recent development and both stared at Shivay in amazement.
Finally Rudra's face broke into a delighted grin.
"Bhaiya! Smooth!" he exclaimed.
Before this escalated into cause for further embarrassment, Shivay turned to Anika and said, "So, are we doing this?"
Throughout everything Anika was yet to say a word and her silence unnerved him.
She turned to Priyanka and his sister gave a slight nod before turning to him with a wide grin. "Bhaiya, actually as you can see we are all quite free this evening."
"Haan, Bhaiya.. let's have an outing together. We haven't done this in a while!" It was now Rudra's turn to look at him with glee.
This was hardly how he had wanted it to happen, but so be it. Shivay smiled at them, catching sight of Om with his look of surprised amusement.
Before he could speak a word however, Anika had stood up and was now excitedly inviting everyone to join them.
"Haan! Hum sab chalenge toh maazaa ayega!"
Shivay looked at her with eyebrows raised. So the lady can speak.
"I'll just call to make changes to the reservation." He had spoken the words looking straight at her and for some reason Anika suddenly felt flustered.
From then on it was a rush of people trying to get ready, occasionally coming up with queries on where they were going, what the plan for the evening was, whether they were taking too much time and so on. As general chaos ensued, Shivay settled down on a couch. He had not planned any of this but he found himself smiling at the excitement and flutter this sudden plan had caused. Amidst all this he noticed Om sitting beside Anika on the couch opposite. They were talking softly with their heads bent towards each other. Om was saying something that evidently pleased the woman a great deal. She smiled widely before catching Shivay's eyes. Her smile disappeared but she continued her conversation.
Shivay found himself getting up and drawing close to that pair.
"Haan, mein sketches kar leti hoon.. magar kabhi aisa socha nahi," she was saying.
"Kya baat ho raha hai, Om?" Shivay looked at his brother questioningly.
"I was just telling Anika that she should try having her cartoons published. You know Ayan, right? He was just telling me the other day that they are looking for a cartoonist for their paper." Om's face showed a glow of excitement.
Shivay recalled the examples of Anika's sketching capabilities that he had laid his eyes on. He couldn't believe his own brother would do this to him. Praise an attempt to mock him! This was sheer betrayal! Before he could say anything however, Rudra bounded up to them.
"Chalein, Bhaiya!"
Shivay turned to see Priyanka and Soumya, waiting, all geared up for the evening.
He felt Om place a hand on his shoulder.
"Chalo", he said.
