If sources close to Sanjay Dutt are to be believed the actor, who is enjoying his new found freedom, will be campaigning for the Congress party in the second phase of the Assembly elections in Gujarat, which will begin on December 16.
Sanjay's elder sister Priya is already a Congress MP and therefore Sanjay's support for the party seems almost natural.
Although no official announcement has been made, a source close to the actor has confirmed that Dutt met with party officials yesterday (Monday) to discuss the idea. "Sanjay recently flew to New Delhi for some personal work. But he also took time out to meet the All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi," says the source.
The meeting is believed to have lasted for over 50 minutes at Gandhi's residence in 10 Janpath. Another source also confirmed the news to us.
"Sanjay made it clear that he was more than happy to campaign for the party in north and central Gujarat – primarily a region with a strong BJP hold – because he has a strong fan following in the region. But no decision has been made yet. Soniaji will announce her decision soon," says the source.
The only thing that is possibly holding back the Congress is that the BJP won't take Dutt's campaigning lying down and the party might use his current legal case against him. However, some within the Congress believe that since the actor has not been convicted under TADA and the court has not branded him a terrorist the BJP just might have less incriminating fodder against Sanjay.
