4. EYES BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES
"May I come in, Sir?" asked Arnav knocking on the door.
"Oh yes, come in Mr. Arnav!" Arnav heard a gentle voice, full of enthusiasm and excitement.
Arnav entered the glass cabin letting the door close behind him. The moment the door closed, Arnav noticed that all the outside sounds disappeared indicating that it was a sound-proof room. All the glasses were crystal clear with not a single mark or a speck of dust on them. Arnav walked ahead observing keenly everything around him.
"Have a seat young man!" he heard Shashi say.
Arnav nodded with a smile as he sat on the chair against Mr. Shashi Gupta who himself was interviewing the candidates. A man in his late fifties, Shashi seemed a very jolly person. Arnav was amazed to see Shashi fresh and smiling even after conducting all those interviews since morning. He was a fair plump man with a bulged tummy, a round face with a round nose. His neatly combed brown hair caught Arnav's attention. Getting up from his chair, Shashi walked a few steps and suddenly stopped. He pulled up his pants almost up to his chest and looked at Arnav who was staring at him.
"I will just be back! Hihihi" said Shashi.
Arnav just nodded as Shashi walked towards the door. But instead of pushing the door, he tried pushing the glass beside the door by mistake and banged his face into the glass.
"Aoww!!!" he cried in pain holding his nose with both the hands. And then he suddenly realised his pants were slipping down. He held his pants with one hand, and holding his nose with the other, he moved side-ways to push open the door with his shoulder and walked out leaving Arnav amused.
Before the door closed, Arnav heard Shashi calling out to Lavanya and scolding her as to why the glasses were so clean.
"What a funny man he is!" thought Arnav shaking his head.
Arnav sat in his place and just looked around the room and outside, observing things, till Shashi returned, this time rightly opening the door.
Arnav turned as he heard Shashi walk in.
"Do it fast!" Shashi said as he hastened in.
Arnav was confused. "What is he telling me to do?" wondered Arnav. Arnav stood up as he saw Shashi approaching him angrily. "Sorry Sir, I didn't get yo..." Arnav began speaking but stopped as he saw a worried Lavanya rush in behind Shashi with a cylindrical container in her hand.
Now Arnav realised that Shashi's order was for Lavanya and not for him. He sighed and silently watched what was going on. Shashi ordered Lavanya to spray the coloured solution from the container on all the glass sections except the door.
"But Sir..." Lavanya tried to speak.
"Shut up! Just do as I say!" said Shashi still rubbing his nose. Looking at Arnav, he said, "Be seated... Ignore her"
Arnav just glanced at Lavanya who was busy following her boss's order. Controlling his laughter, Arnav sat down. He saw Shashi pulling up his pants and then letting his weight fall into the chair. Lavanya turned at the sudden noise thinking that something, or rather someone, fell down. But it was just Shashi sitting in his chair.
"Oh God!" thought Lavanya and continued her work.
"So..." began Shashi, "Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada, right?" he said checking the register.
"Right, Sir!" replied Arnav proudly.
"I like your confidence" complimented Shashi. "So tell me, why have you applied for this job?"
"I have always dreamt to be a detective and I am sure I will be a good one!"
"And how can you say that?"
Arnav was very excited to speak. "Sir, I have grown up watching James Bond movies and reading Sherlock Holmes" his eyes were sparkling as he spoke. "I absolutely love suspense, Sir!" Arnav got up from his chair in excitement and walked around as he spoke with all actions and expressions. "Sir, I can guess the culprit in most of the suspense movies by watching just the first halves. I can't wait to begin solving real cases Sir!" he said hugging Shashi in excitement. "What an adventurous life it would be! Gosh!" Arnav was lost into his imagination. He was acting as if he was already a detective. He spoke in a mysterious voice. "Clues... Evidence... Mystery... Suspense... and then... finally... I will catch the culprit! Ha!!" saying so Arnav placed a couple of his fingers on Shashi's temple as if it was a gun.
Shashi gulped in fear, his eyes wide and his forehead sweaty.
"See, I am really good at it!" said Arnav blowing over his fingers in style and sitting back in his place.
Before Shashi could say anything, Lavanya came there saying "Done, Sir!!" She was smiling, expecting Shashi to praise her for her work.
"When will you stop interrupting when two people are speaking!" scolded Shashi.
Lavanya's smile vanished at once. "Sorry Sir" she said in a low voice hanging her head sadly.
"Have you finished marking all the glass sections except both the doors?" asked Shashi.
Both the doors? Arnav quickly looked around and realised that he had failed to notice the second door.
"Yes Sir!" answered Lavanya walking to one of the sections. "See Sir, I have carefully put such dots on the sections so that their cleanliness is not spoilt" she said expecting Shashi to praise her intelligence.
Arnav smiled at Lavanya and raised his eyebrows to say "Good job!"
Lavanya smiled.
Shashi looked at the section almost squinting. "Where?!" he asked unable to see the dot.
"Right here, Sir!" answered Lavanya pointing to the coloured dot she had marked.
"I don't see any..." said Shashi. "Make it larger... I should be able to see it clearly sitting right here, understand?"
Lavanya frowned. "Okay Sir!" she said and got back to work.
Arnav felt bad for Lavanya though he tried his best to stop giggling. "It's gonna be so much fun to work here" he thought.
Shashi got back to the interview, saying, "So you think you have the qualities to become a good detective?"
"Yes Sir! I am sure of it! I have all the qualities..." replied Arnav leaning back in his chair.
"Like?" asked Shashi entwining his fingers as he rested his hands on the table.
"Like... Good observation?"
"So you think you are a god observer... Can you prove it?" asked Shashi.
"Sure, I can!"
"Go ahead!"
"Okay..." began Arnav, "Starting with this office, it seems a new one constructed only for this new Detective Agency of yours which is not yet registered if I am not wrong. I couldn't see any registration certificate hung on the wall at the reception." Shashi was surprised at Arnav's observation and study. Arnav continued, "You being an industrialist, I wonder why you had to start this Detective Agency. No complaints though. I am looking forward to be a part of it." Shashi just listened with a dropped jaw as Arnav spoke on. "I am sure you had not expected so many candidates to turn up for this job. I can understand, you are new in this profession having no past experience. Also I had expected more assistants here, but I can see only one, that is Lavanya." Shashi glanced at Lavanya who was busy making bigger marks on the glass sections. Arnav went on. "About this cabin of yours... It is sound proof with two doors. The other door being a secret one I think, as it is sort of hidden behind the cabinet. But you let out this secret while instructing Lavanya a few minutes ago." Arnav winked as Shashi forced a smile. Arnav patted on Shashi's hands saying, "Don't worry Sir, I won't tell anyone!" Shashi gave out a fake laugh thinking he shouldn't have revealed about the other door. "And this room of glass..." continued Arnav, "I am sure you planned it so that you can keep an eye of whatever is going around, outside this room as well. I could see CCTV cameras all over the place except this room. Ofcourse, you would not require any here as this is your cabin." Shashi nodded slightly in agreement. Arnav further said, "Now let me tell something about you..." Shashi missed a beat. He became nervous as he waited for Arnav to speak on. "Sir, you have short-sightedness and also you need glasses while reading. I can see that your glasses lying on the table are progressive." Shashi glanced at his glasses in surprise. "I can assume that you have forgotten to wear your belt today" said Arnav naughtily. Shashi stared at his bulging tummy and then back at Arnav. "You are suffering from Asthma" said Arnav glancing at the Asthma pump lying beside the AC remote. Shashi was amazed by Arnav's observation. Arnav went on, "I suppose you are a left-handed person as the pen is placed towards the left of the register seeing from your side. You seem to be a little lazy or careless, pardon me, but that calendar hanging behind you is last year's. I am surprised that not even Miss Lavanya noticed it." Shashi turned to see the old calendar and realised he needed to get a new one.
"There's one more secret I know about you..." said Arnav cheekily.
Shashi missed another beat. What does he know?
Arnav leaned forward and gestured Shashi to lean closer. Shashi's heart was beating faster as he leaned across the table.
"I know you wear a wig" Arnav whispered in Shashi's ear.
Shashi stood up in shock looking around making sure no one heard it. "Relax Sir, hold on to your pants... Don't worry, I won't tell anyone!"
Shashi quickly pulled up his pants and stared at Arnav in disbelief. Lavanya informed Shashi that she was done with her work and went away. Shashi was still staring at Arnav.
Arnav said, "I believe that eyes believe in themselves while ears believe in what others say. So, as a detective, we should never overlook what is obvious!"
"I am impressed!" said Shashi smiling ear to ear. "Have you any past experience?" he asked.
"Well, I would like to tell you about my latest experience... That was yesterday..." said Arnav taking out his mobile from his pocket. "I took these photographss of the case report secretly at the police station" he said showing the pictures of the report which stated his efforts in getting the thief, Gagan, caught.
Shashi was impressed. He saw Khushi's name too in the report. "Who is this Khushi?" he asked.
"Argh! Why is he asking about that crazy girl! Isn't this interview about me?!" thought Arnav. But then he calmed down and said, "Yes, she too helped the police" he said reluctantly.
"Okay..." said Shashi. "It was great meeting you! Wait outside... Results will be announced later. All the best!"
Arnav shook hands with Shashi thanking him and turned to leave. But he stopped for some reason. He smiled to himself. Turning towards Shashi, he said, "Sir, that girl... Khushi... She too is here, waiting outside for her turn to be interviewed."
"Oh is it? Great!" said Shashi.
Arnav nodded and left the cabin feeling glad after mentioning about Khushi. She is not that bad after all!
Khushi saw Arnav coming into the waiting room after his interview. Her heart was racing. Why? Was it because she was afraid thinking what if Arnav got selected? But on the other hand she wanted him to do well. Was she excited to know how his interview went? She was just waiting to talk to him.
As Arnav came and sat in his place beside Khushi, Khushi turned to him and waited impatiently for him to speak.
Arnav stared at Khushi. "What?!" he asked curtly, though he knew what she was waiting for.
"Need I ask or you already know?" said Khushi.
Arnav and Khushi both laughed.
"Okay, tell me now..." urged Khushi. "Tell me fast before my turn comes!"
"Okay okay!" said Arnav smiling at Khushi's hurry.
He told her what questions were asked and before he could tell the details of what all happened, Khushi's name was called out for the interview.
Khushi got up from the chair nervously. Arnav could sense that Khushi was tensed.
"Don't worry, Khushi... You will do great!" he said to make Khushi feel better and confident.
Khushi was surprised. And Arnav too was surprised at his own behaviour. I don't want her to get the job. And yet I want her to do well? What's happening to me?
Arnav remembered something. He smiled and said, "I want to give you a tip!"
Khushi frowned. "I don't need any tip from you!" she said and turned to leave towards Shashi's cabin.
"Keep good control over your laughter!" said Arnav staring at her back.
Khushi turned back and looked at him in confusion. "What?!" she asked. "Control over my laughter?"
"Remember my tip!" said Arnav with a wink.
Khushi just ignored him and walked away.
