Part 16

Khushi made her way to her room after wishing and feigning a warm smile at her mother-in-law who had opened the door for her. She couldn't exchange pleasantries in a moment where her self-control was threatened, she decided.

"Khushi?" trailed Shyam's surprised voice as he looked at a flustered Khushi racing to the bed as she shut the door.

He rose from his study room and walked up to her as he wondered what could have caused Khushi's agony, once again after years. She was not the one to take professional things to heart and lament about it.

Khushi felt the bed by her side dip down as Shyam draped his arm around her shoulders as he questioned, "What happened? Why do you look so upset?"

Her training had taught her to never bottle up one's emotions, be it of anger or of pain and who could possibly be a better person to share her woes than the person who saved her from it in the first place.

" He came. To my cabin, seeking therapy."

Shyam looked taken aback by Khushi's answer. It was not a rocket science to decipher who was being mentioned by Khushi as a reason of her distress. His grip automatically loosened momentarily before getting tightened with his concern for her.

" You are okay right? He didn't hurt you or-"

Khushi cut him in between."He didn't. He had a panic attack when I told him that I was married to you and he fainted in my arms, confessing his love. Why did he come back, Shyam? He came back as a person suffering from depression for being guilty, for being guilty of forcibly marrying me. Why does he torment me? Always?"

Shyam was unable to answer to Khushi's question as he was shocked with the revelation that was dropped on his head. Arnav Singh Raizada, the man whom he loathed for meddling with Khushi's life, had such a strong sense of remorse that he had gone into depression, was nothing less than a made-up story which he would never want to believe in, but unfortunately it had hit him in a way where he was forced to gulp it down.

"I will ask someone else to look into this case, Khushi. You don't have to do this," he said while Khushi looked straight at the wall without letting the upper lashes kiss the lower ones.

Khushi sighed deeply." What good will it bring, Shyam?" she questioned, surprising him by her question, which only increased as she continued, " Seeing him like that has caused me enough damage. There couldn't be anything worse I could face than Arnav Singh Raizada having a panic attack listening about our marriage and confessing his love for me in moments of subconsciousness. He couldn't fake it, which means that he loved me all this while. If he loved me so much, why did he hurt me so much that it broke me?"

Shyam felt the vulnerable and fragile Khushi he had meticulously changed into the strong Maya Chaturvedi resurfacing and anger gushed through his heart at the man who was responsible for the change.

"Forget everything of this, love. We will talk about this tomorrow but now you need rest. Do you know how tired you look? Go and sleep! I promise that I will talk to you tomorrow about this and we will find a solution to this. Also you have an appointment with Neerja tomorrow right? You could speak to her too. Everything will be fine, don't worry," he assured her as she looked at him with tears filming her hazel orbs which had turned dull and lifeless.

"Really?"

Her broken tone only resulted in further anguish in the concerned man in front of her. How was it that the man who hurt her the most had managed to have this effect on her after eight years?

Shyam sighed deeply to compose himself. "Yes, Khushi. It will be. Now sleep."

Khushi nodded weakly at him before lying down on the bed, not bothering to freshen up or change the clothing of the day. Shyam restrained his anger as he saw one more effect of him on her. The Khushi who never went to the bed without freshening up had not even bothered trying. She was inching closer to her former self, her shadow of the present, and there was no doubt about it in Shyam's temper clouded mind.

Shyam pulled a blanket over her and turned around to leave when Khushi's grip on his hand made him pause.

" Stay back. I think...I think, they will come back tonight. Please? For this one night?" Her begging tone and pleading eyes had left him no other option but to comply with her ardent request.

Without uttering a word, Shyam slid into the bed alongside Khushi as she smiled weakly at him in an appreciative and thankful manner while he returned her gesture warmly while slightly patting and caressing her warm head alternatively, lulling her into sleep with his affectionate gesture.

Noticing her slow and shallow breaths, Shyam realized that she had dozed off into peaceful slumber and wondered when the depressed woman beside him would get her much required closure from Arnav Singh Raizada.

------------------------------------------

" Khushi..." A whisper left Arnav's lips, alerting the nurse who was on duty for him. The nurse immediately called the doctor to be consulted and alerted her about the latest development in her case.

" Mr.Raizada? Can you hear me?" The nurse asked as she grabbed some water for him and made her way towards him.

Arnav, who was supporting his heavy head with his arms which were no longer strong as before, nodded at her feebly.

"Drink some water, Mr.Raizada. Dr. Singhal would be here any moment to diagnose you," she said while holding the glass out to Arnav, who took it weakly as the nurse adjusted the pillows so that he could sit properly.

"What had happened to me? Why am I here?" asked Arnav with a frown etching itself on his forehead.

" You had a panic attack, during your session with Dr.Chaturvedi, Mr.Raizada. She had managed to calm you down but you had lost your consciousness. She had put you on sedatives so that you could rest better and hence you are here," she explained while Arnav couldn't help but cringe at the mention of his Khushi as 'Dr.Chaturvedi'.

The mention of her had also brought an undying desire to see her once again, to seek answers to his questions and offer explanations to the unvoiced questions of her.

"Where is she?" he asked firmly.

" I am sorry, but who?" asked the nurse in surprise.

" Khu.." he stuttered and hesitantly corrected himself, "Dr.Chaturvedi. Where is she?"

The nurse looked surprised at his question. She had certainly not expected the question as the question made it seem like he knew her personally.

"She left for the day, Mr.Raizada. Dr.Singhal would be arriving here soon."

It had pulled unknown strings of his heart to know that she left him despite of knowing that he had a panic attack but he knew that he was hoping for something too high. She had done everything she could to ensure his wellbeing and had entrusted him to another doctor, whom he knew, would be prolific one too. But he couldn't just let her leave him. What if she would never meet him again? He couldn't let go of the opportunity which was presented to him as it seemed to be the only fool-proof way to make her meet him once again.

" I will not take her treatment. I want only Dr.Chaturvedi to check on me or no one. I am ready to wait till tomorrow but no one other than her will check on me. I am sure I am not in a condition so fragile that lack of supervision and diagnosis would fatally harm me."

Nurse appeared shocked at Arnav's words. " But Mr.Raizada," she tried to object, but she was cut off in middle by Arnav:

" I want to hear nothing. My sincere apologies to sound rude but understand that this is important to me. I will stay back here but only Dr.Chaturvedi will treat me. Please."

The pleading look in his eyes and the determination in his voice had made the nurse forget her duty. It almost seemed like he was ready to do anything to meet her and his condition was stable. It was better to not give him any stress by letting him meet Dr.Chaturvedi rather than forcing him to take Dr.Singhal's treatment and get worse. She didn't know the reason behind his desperateness to meet her but she could surely make out after working so many years in a psychiatric clinic that his reasons were genuine and so were his actions.

"So be it, Mr.Raizada,"
she said while a look of relief appeared on his face much to the nurse;s relief as she continued, "But please take adequate rest and don't stress yourself. Would you like to have something? Dr.Chaturvedi has not placed any restrictions on your diet so you would be able to eat anything you prefer. However, we only have snacks at this part of the night. Sorry for the inconvenience."

"Thank you so much. And no problem. Anything light is fine. Thanks again," he said while the nurse smiled at him warmly before moving out to get some snacks for him, leaving him to his thoughts.

As solitude closed upon him, Arnav Singh Raizada wondered if he could actually get Khushi to talk to him or he would remain in the darkness-filled vortex of guilt, haunting his thoughts and destroying his peace.

------------

Needless to say, I am disappointed.
All the things Arnav has done from the beginning just randomly vanish and he comes the poor one and Khushi's torment is not even considered. Would you think about someone who forcibly married you and almost forced himself on you, had you been in Khushi's place? It might be a fiction but I cannot write something so immoral and out of the place. Shyam and Khushi are married but if you read this chapter carefully you would know what I had planned. I clearly left some hints in the chapter.

Like you all, even I like happy endings but not unreal endings. Arnav does all sorts of bad things to her, sudden realization to him and he apologizes and she forgives. That would never happen in my fictions, sorry. We all make mistakes and we will have to make up for them and so will Arnav. Period
