Unspoken Love

Chapter 51

Is he Karan? This was the first thought that came to Khushi's mind after seeing a young man lying motionless on the bed. There were medical instruments all around, the saline drip and a nurse to take care of this gentleman.

Khushi's doubt was cleared when Arnav and Aman wished him as "Happy Birthday Karan!!" They both were very happy.

Everything was ready for a celebration. There was a birthday cake with candles, there were beautiful bouquets placed by the side of the bed. Karan's mother had prepared Karan's favourite food items. The cake was placed on a stool beside the bed. Arnav held Karan's hand in his and cut the cake while everyone sang "Happy Birthday" song to Karan. Khushi was surprised to see all this. They all were talking to Karan normally, as if he was absolutely fine. They knew he could hear, and see. They knew he could understand. All this amazed Khushi. The cake was cut into pieces and was served to everyone. Arnav sat beside Karan on the bed eating the cake while others sat around the bed.

"Wow! The cake is very tasty!" said Arnav, "It's your favourite pineapple flavour!"

Everyone smiled. Khushi was silently observing everything. This was normal for everyone else, but for Khushi it was something she had never seen before. They all were talking of their childhood days and Khushi silently enjoyed their conversation.

There was silence for a moment. Arnav broke the silence. "You remember Karan? Your birthday marked the beginning of a series of get-togethers for our group!" Karan's mother and Aman laughed remembering it. Arnav continued, "First it was your birthday. And then four days later, Pratik's birthday! Oh, I always hated that boy!! Haha, but his birthday party used to be fun!!" Everyone laughed again. "And then... a week later..." Arnav paused, "it used to be Maa's birthday! Wasn't celebrated for long though..." Arnav's eyes were wet. Smiles from everyone's face vanished.

"And then came your birthday!!" said Aman to change the mood. "It used to be so much fun!!" he added.

Arnav smiled remembering it. "I wish we never grew older!" said Arnav with a sigh. Everyone agreed and was lost into own thoughts.

Arnav suddenly changed his mood and said with great enthusiasm, "Karan, tell me, what gift do you want from me?" Everyone smiled but their smiles were short lived as Arnav spoke further. "You haven't asked for anything from me since years... Tell me what you want... whatever you want!! You want me to take you for a movie? I will!! You want me to treat you at McD? I will..!! You want me to buy your favourite book for you? I will...!! I miss your demands so much... Why did you stop asking for these things? Look at me, I am the same Arnav!! But why have you changed? Tell me what you want damn it!!!"

Arnav was breathing heavily. Khushi was shocked. Karan's mother and Aman knew very well how attached Arnav was to Karan. Aman placed his hand on Arnav's shoulder as if to calm him down. Arnav looked at Aman. "Tell him to speak yaar!!!" Arnav said in frustration and left the room.

Khushi's gaze followed Arnav as he walked out. Karan's mother couldn't hold back her tears. Aman took her into his embrace trying to console her.

Khushi saw tears in Karan's eyes. She wanted to do something for everyone, but what? She looked at Aman. He signalled her to go and talk to Arnav. Khushi nodded and came out of the room. Her eyes were wet too.

Khushi looked around for Arnav but didn't find him. "Arnav Sir?" she called out for him but there was no reply. She saw a shadow in the balcony and went there. She saw Arnav standing there, tears rolling down his cheeks. As he sensed someone was there, he quickly wiped his tears.

"It's okay, you can cry in front of me... I have already seen you cry..!" said Khushi with a wink. Arnav chuckled.

Both were silent for a moment before Arnav began speaking. "Karan was my best friend, Khushi..." said Arnav. And then he began to tell her the story behind Karan's condition. Though Khushi knew it already, she listened to Arnav as if she was hearing it for the first time. She remembered she had promised Aman that she would not let Arnav know that Aman had told her about it.

"... I will never forgive Sheetal!! She ruined Karan's life..." said Arnav in anger. "And she didn't even come to see if Karan was alive!!! She left him when he needed her the most!! How could she?! Tell me Khushi, were you in her place, would you have done the same?" Arnav looked at Khushi waiting for her answer.

"Sir, sometimes things can't be explained. Whatever Sheetal did, there must be some strong reason behind it... May be she was..."

"I don't believe this!! You are taking Sheetal's side?!! You don't even know Karan... You don't know how humble a person he is..."

"Exactly my point! We don't know what happened before or during the accident. None of you was present there to witness it"

"I only know that Sheetal ruined Karan's life!! His love ruined his life!!"

"And that's the reason you don't believe in love..."

"That's the reason I didn't believe in love..." Arnav corrected her.

"Didn't?" thought Khushi. "And now? Do you believe in love?" she asked.

Arnav looked into her eyes. "I guess so..." he whispered.

Khushi wanted to look away but she was lost into his eyes. Her heart was pounding. They were standing so close to each other that they could feel each other's breath.

"Have you ever loved anyone?" asked Khushi in a whisper without breaking the eyelock.

"I think I have..." Arnav replied. Khushi could hear her heart in her ears. "And I think she loves me too..." he whispered again, "I hope she'll be with me... always! Whatever may happen..."

"Don't worry, she will..." whispered Khushi.

Arnav was about to say something when Aman came there searching for both of them. Khushi quickly moved away from Arnav.

"Arnav, are you alright?" asked Aman. Arnav nodded in 'yes'.

Everyone walked into the hall. Arnav hugged Karan's mother telling her that everything would be fine. She blessed Arnav, Aman and Khushi before they left after meeting Karan. Aman left for his home. And Arnav and Khushi drove to Khushi's home.

Arnav and Khushi were silent all the way. They just stole glances at each other from time to time. They reached Khushi's home. Both got down from the car. Arnav got out Khushi's bags. Shashi, Garima and Dadi watched them stand in front of each other. Arnav and Khushi didn't know what to say. Both knew what they felt for each other and both of them were extremely happy.

"Thank you Sir!" said Khushi breaking the silence.

"For what?" asked Arnav.

"For everything!" she said.

Arnav remembered something. "Khushi, when you were calling out to me that night, you said 'Arnav' and not 'Arnav Sir'..."

"Is it? Oh, I.. I am sorry... I didn't realise... I was very scared and..."

"Shhh... Actually I liked it! 'Arnav' is better... Don't call me 'Sir'..."

"But Sir..."

"Again 'Sir'? No more 'Sir'.. okay? Call me 'Arnav'. It feels better. Lagta hai jaise koi apna..."

And Arnav's phone began ringing. He picked up the call. "What?!!!" he exclaimed in horror. Khushi looked at him, worried. "Which hospital?!!" he asked, "Okay! I will be there right away!!"
