Chapter 17 - The Bombshell
Later...
Seated between Veera and Chahat with both hands folded under his chin and elbows on the table, Preet watched Prem and Meher have a friendly debate on politics. Politics...now that was one topic Preet could care less about, but Prem loved it. He especially loved discussing how changes in the political scene of the nation affected large business corporations.
"Well, we can always agree to disagree," Meher was saying. "That's what's so great about living in a democracy, but you know what my Papa Ji always says Prem Ji?"
"What?" smiled Prem.
"That politicians and diapers should be changed often, both for the same reason," chuckled Meher.
"We can definitely agree on that point," Prem laughed out loud.
Wow! Thought Preet. First, she wins over Heer Bhabi and Bauji, and now she's got PB eating out of her hands. I picked a real winner this time.
"Heer, how about some dessert?" asked Prem.
"Coming right up," smiled Heer.
"I'll help," offered Meher. She was about to get up but Heer stopped her.
"Some other time Meher," said Heer. "Today, you're a guest in our house." She began serving the sweets she had prepared.
"Mmm...good," said Chahat, as she took a spoonful of kheer and put it in her mouth.
"Too good," agreed Prem.
"Prem loves dessert," chuckled Heer. "If nothing else, he'll eat a spoonful of sugar, but he has to have something sweet. Preet is the same way."
"Hey, it's not our fault. We get our sweet tooth from Ma," said Prem. "You remember her gulab jamun Preet?"
"The best in the world," nodded Preet. "She loved to make them...and she loved to eat them."
"Yeah...and you know what else she really loved?" added Prem.
"Mishti Dahi...," said Meher. "She used to get it all the time from the Bangali Sweet shop."
Prem looked at Meher in surprise.
"Uh...I may have mentioned that to her," explained Preet.
Prem smiled.
Veera meanwhile had been watching Preet very carefully. When she was sure no one was paying attention, she leaned over to him and whispered. "She's very pretty."
"Huhn? Who?" Preet asked innocently.
"Meher, who else," chuckled Veera. "You can't seem to take your eyes off her."
"I have no idea what you're talking about," lied Preet as he quickly averted his gaze.
"You can play it cool Bhaiya, but denying your feelings won't make them go away," said Veera. "Are you going to give her Ma's ring?"
"Will you please keep your voice down?" pleaded Preet.
"All I'm saying is...it's the first time you've invited a girl over to meet the family, and she's a keeper," whispered Veera. "I like her."
"Me too," Chahat quipped.
Me three, sighed Preet. Now if only she would give me the time of day too. He thought for a minute then leaned over and whispered something into Chahat's ear. She nodded, slid off her chair, and ran over to Meher's side.
"I want to show you my room," she said, tugging on Meher's arm.
"Chahat, will you please let our guest eat in peace?" frowned Heer.
"Please...pretty please," pleaded Chahat. "I want to show her the new dream house we got for my Barbie doll. Please."
"Chahat...," said Heer.
"No, it's okay," smiled Meher. "I'm done. And I'd love to see Chahat's room and her Barbie's new dream house."
"Well, I have a meeting with a new client I have to get ready for," said Maya, as she wiped her mouth with her napkin and proceeded to leave.
"Sam, would you like to see some of the wedding magazines I've gotten?" offered Veera. "I've narrowed my dress selection down to 10. I'd love to get your opinion."
"You call 10 narrowing it down?" laughed Sam. "You definitely need help. Let's go."
"Uh...I'll be up in my room if anyone needs me," said Preet as he excused himself. "Lunch was great Heer Bhabi."
As the servants began to clear the table, Prem came and stood next to Heer. "Preet was sure in a hurry to get to his room," he said. "He didn't even finish his dessert."
"I suppose the fact that his room is just down the hall from Chahat's is some incentive," chuckled Heer. "So...what did you think of Meher?"
"I like her," said Prem. "She's smart, sensible, witty, and..."
"And very pretty. Go ahead you can say it, I won't mind," laughed Heer. "She's also very easy to get along with. I like her too. She's just perfect for our Preet."
A short while later...
"Here you can have this one," said Chahat as she handed Meher a doll. "I have a lot of newer ones, but she's my favorite. Papa got her for me when I was sick with fever. She stood by my side when I needed her the most."
"That was very considerate of her," smiled Meher.
"You know what my mommy always says?" asked Chahat.
"What?" said Meher.
"A friend in need is a friend indeed," said Chahat.
"Your mother is a very wise woman," smiled Meher.
Chahat nodded in agreement.
"I think I like this doll the best, just like you," Meher smiled and tweaked the little girl's cheek. "And I love her dress."
"I have more dresses for her too," said Chahat. She ran to one corner of her room and brought back a large plastic box. She popped open the lid. The box was full of tiny Barbie sized outfits. "This is for when she wants to be a doctor, this is for when she wants to be an air hostess, and this is for when she wants to have a cook out. See, she has a blue apron just like mommy. But I like this red party dress the best. Can you help me change her?"
"Sure," smiled Meher.
Just then Preet knocked on the door. "Hey guys!" He said as he walked in and sat down next to Meher and Chahat. "Playing with Barbie, are we? Mind if I join you? I can be Ken."
"Chachu close your eyes!" cried Chahat. "Barbie doesn't have any clothes on! You'll see her shame shame!"
"Oops...sorry," said Preet. He quickly covered his eyes with his hands.
Meher couldn't help but laugh out loud. "Here you go Chahat," she said as she quickly finished dressing the doll. "Your Barbie is all dressed. Your Chahu can open his eyes now."
"Hey Chahat, I had a chocolate bar for you, but I left it in my room. You want to go get it?" asked Preet.
"Maybe later," said Chahat. She went back to playing with her doll.
Later! Can't this kid take a hint! Preet rolled his eyes. "Uh...how about if you go look for that chocolate now and I'll take you shopping for more Barbie outfits later?"
"Really Chachu? Thanks!" smiled Chahat. She gave Preet a hug then ran out of her room.
"Really Preet!" Meher stood up and frowned. "Bribing a child with chocolate, and when that doesn't work, doll outfits! I wonder what your Heer Bhabi would say if she found out."
"I had no choice," cried Preet. "I've been trying desperately to get 2 minutes alone with you."
"Why?" asked Meher.
"Because I want to talk to you," smiled Preet.
"Fine. Go ahead. I'm all ears," said Meher. She folded her arms in front of her. "Tell me what it is that you have to say."
"Um...uh...how did you like my house?" Preet asked shyly.
"It's very impressive," admitted Meher.
"And my family?" asked Preet.
"They are some of the nicest and most welcoming people I've ever met," Meher allowed herself to smile a little. "Even your Bauji."
"You think that now," frowned Preet. "Just give him a chance and he'll show you his true colors."
"I thought you said you wanted talk to me," said Meher. "I thought it would be something important, if not, I should find Sam because I think it's time we go."
"Meher wait," said Preet. He put his hands on her shoulders to stop her. "I was...uh...just getting warmed up. What I have to say is very important. So important that I've never said this to any other girl in my entire life."
Meher's heart jumped in her throat as Preet slid his hands down her arms and took her hands in his, then he looked at the floor and grinned. He was blushing, thought Meher. He was actually blushing.
Damn! Thought Preet. He took a deep breath and looked up into Meher's eyes. He wanted to tell her how he felt. That she had destroyed all his walls. That he had no more defenses against her. He wanted to tell her how much he cared for her, admired her and yes...loved her. He wanted her. He wanted to be married to her. He wanted to have her altogether, as his own, forever. He had rehearsed this so many times, but now that she was actually standing attentively before him, he was at a loss for words. "Meher...I uh...How should I put this? I guess, I'll just come right out and say it...I'm in love with..."
Before Preet could say anything further, Chahat came running back into the room.
"Preet Chachu come quick!" she cried. Taking him by the hand she tugged him towards the door.
"Woah, Chahat hold on!" said Preet. "Where's the fire?"
"Downstairs," said Chahat. "Mommy wants to see you right away. Come on!"
"Now?" asked Preet.
"Yes now, right away!" said Chahat. "Come on Chachu please!"
Preet reluctantly followed Chahat downstairs to the large main hall at the entrance of the house. Meher came down after them too. Heer and Prem were standing there with worried looks on their faces.
"Mommy! Mommy! I found Preet Chachu for you!" declared Chahat.
"Bhabi, what's wrong?" asked Preet. He hoped Chahat hadn't told Heer about him bribing her. His Bhabi wouldn't shy away from pulling his ears in front of Meher.
"You tell me,"" said Heer. She pointed towards the door where 2 women stood surveying the premises.
"Who's that?" asked Veera. She and Sam had just come from one of the living rooms down the hall. They came and stood next to Meher.
"Oh no!" frowned Sam. "What are they doing here?"
"You know them?" asked Veera.
"Oh I know them alright," whispered Sam. She glanced over at Meher, who was looking very pale.
"What's all the commotion?" cried Lalit. "Can't a man make a phone call in peace?"
"Ashlesha?" said Preet.
"Just look at his face Mom," cried Ashlesha. "I told you he'd be surprised. Hi Preet!" She ran over to him, gave him a quick peck on his cheek and hugged him tightly.
"Ash! What do you think you're doing?" Preet asked. Looking embarrassed, he removed her arms from around his neck and took a step back. He quickly glanced over at Meher but she had turned her face away and her eyes were fixed to the ground.
Ignoring Preet's remark, Ashlesha turned her attention towards Meher and Sam. "Fancy meeting you 2 here," she said.
"Preet! What the hell is going on here?" demanded Lalit.
"That's what I'd like to know too," muttered Heer.
"Mr. Lalit Juneja, I presume. I believe you were expecting us," Daljeet extended her hand and smiled. "I'm Daljeet Rampal. So very pleased to finally make your acquaintance. I hope you don't mind, but my husband is running a little late...business meeting...you know how it is. We would have come together, but Ashlesha just couldn't wait to see your son again. And I just can't say 'No' to her for anything."
"I...uh...understand completely," smiled Lalit. "You are most welcome to our home."
Preet's mouth fell open. Rather than declaring war, his father was welcoming the Rampals into their home. What in God's name was going on?
"Thank you Prah Ji," smiled Daljeet. "Ash, aren't you going to show respect to your future father-in-law?"
"What?!" cried Preet. His mind was racing. How could Bauji become Ashlesha's father-in-law? PB was already married and so was Herman Bhai. He threw questioning glances at Heer and Prem, but they were looking as as confused as he was. He looked at Meher again. She was still staring at her feet, and nervously wringing her dupatta with her hands.
"Oh of course!" Ashlesha cried as she flipped her hair back. "Where are my manners? P. P. Mr. Juneja, I mean...Bauji."
"P. P.?" frowned Lalit.
"P. P...you know like...Payri Pauna," chuckled Ashlesha.
"I don't understand," Heer whispered to Prem. "If she's the Rampal's daughter then who is Meher?"
"It's very convenient," Ashlesha continued with her explanation. "I mean, I couldn't really bend down and touch your feet with this mini-skirt on, now could I?"
"Ahem," Lalit cleared his throat. "Yes...well...Mrs. Rampal, I think you've met Herman and Maya already. They will be joining us shortly, but let me introduce you to the rest of my family. This is Prem, my eldest son and his wife Heer. And this is Veera, my youngest."
"So you're the one getting married," said Ashlesha.
"Yes," smiled Veera.
"You haven't finalized a dress, have you? Oh my God, I have so much input to offer," grinned Ashlesha. "We'll have so much fun together. Just then she felt someone tug on her skirt."
"Dadu, you forgot to tell her about me," said Chahat.
Ashlesha looked down and saw a little girl with traces of chocolate around her mouth smiling up at her. "Ugh!" she said with a look of disgust. "And who does this little urchin belong to?"
Chahat's smile disappeared, as did the rest of her family's.
"Beta, it's not polite to tug on people's clothing," Daljeet wagged a finger at Chahat. "You'll have to excuse Ashlesha. She's not very fond of children."
"She doesn't like children?" frowned Lalit. "Mrs. Rampal, Chahat is my granddaughter."
"Um...uh...I meant...she doesn't like other people's children," Daljeet said quickly.
"Especially when their grubby little hands are smudged with chocolate," Ashlesha said under her breath, but it was loud enough for Chahat to hear.
"You're a snob!" cried Chahat. "And I don't like you!" She stuck her tongue out at Ashlesha, and ran from the room.
"Chahat!" Heer called after her. She looked back at Daljeet and Ashlesha apologetically. "I'm sorry. I don't know what's gotten into that child. Uh...why don't we all adjourn to the study? I'll have the servants serve tea."
"Thank you, that would be lovely," smiled Daljeet. As she passed by Meher, she paused to address her. "Meher, how odd to find you here?"
"It's not odd at all mom," Ashlesha spoke up. "Preet and Meher are very good friends."
"Really?" Daljeet said with a raised eyebrow. "And does your mother know you're here, or did you run away again...like you always do to that farm of yours?"
"Ji...I...uh...came to Delhi with Sam...and...uh...," stammered Meher.
"You 2 know each other?" asked Heer.
"Yes. Meher is my sister Kuljeet's daughter. Not real daughter mind you, just a step one," Daljeet said, looking down on Meher. "Her father works as a manager in one of your hotels in Ludhiana. Preet was staying at her family's guesthouse. What a happy coincidence that Ash was visiting at the same time. That's how the 2 of them met."
Heer glanced from Preet to Meher. It suddenly dawned on her that they had made a terrible mistake. Meher was not the Rampal's daughter. But she was the girl Preet was in love with! Oh no! Poor Meher! Oh my God! Poor Preet!
"So many times I offered Kuljeet to set something up for your father at one of our factories, but your father always refused," remarked Daljeet. "So proud and stubborn he is. Meanwhile, my poor sister had to do without. I suppose things will get better for your family now that the hotel will be up and running again." She looked at Meher with narrowing eyes. "You young lady should be home helping out your mother, rather than running around with your friends in places you don't belong. I'm surprised my sister let you go, she usually keeps a tighter grip on your leash."
Leash! Fumed Sam. How dare she speak of Meher as if she were some animal!
Preet also was angered by Daljeet's remark. "Mrs. Rampal," He said through gritted teeth. "I have no clue why you've come to our house. But if it's to insult people I care about, you can very well leave."
"Mrs. Rampal is here because I invited her," Lalit spoke up. "It was supposed to be a surprise, but the cat is obviously out of the bag now. You'll be happy to know that we have agreed to you and Ashlesha getting married. Now all we need to do is iron out the details."
"What?!" cried Preet. "Me and Ash?! When was all of this decided?! Would someone please tell me what the hell is going on here?!"
"Mind your language Preet. I have no desire to discuss a private family matter in front of strangers," said Lalit. He nodded towards Meher and Sam. "I have a feeling your friends were about to leave. Please see them to the door."
"But...," tried Preet.
"I think Heer was right," Lalit interrupted him. "We should have some tea." He motioned to a servant standing nearby and gave him some instructions. "And be sure to show Mr. Rishap Rampal in as soon as he arrives. Mrs. Rampal, would you and Ashlesha please follow me into the study?"
"Certainly," said Daljeet. "But please...call me Daljeet."
"Prem, call Herman and Maya," said Lalit. "I want to see everyone in my study right now."
"Well this is a strange turn of events," mumbled Veera. "I never know what's going on in this house." She threw her hands in the air then headed for the study.
Prem threw both Preet and Meher an apologetic glance then reluctantly followed his sister.
Heer came up to Sam and Meher. "It was wonderful to meet you both," she said. "You're welcome to stay for tea if you'd like."
"Thanks Heer Didi," Meher gave her a weak smile. "But I think we've over-stayed our welcome."
"More than over stayed," Sam glared at Preet.
"Well, I hope I get to see you again," said Heer. She gave the girls a warm hug then left the room.
"Chalo (let's go) Sam," Meher said quietly.
"Meher wait," Preet said, as he stepped in front of her. "I won't let you go like this. I had no clue this was going to happen. Dharti Ma ki kasam. There is no connection between me and Ash. You have to believe me."
"I'd say the fact that your family is in the study planning your marriage to her is connection enough," Sam scoffed.
"There's obviously been some sort of a mistake," said Preet. "Please, let me explain..."
"You don't have to explain anything to me Preet," sighed Meher. "It's none of my business. Come on Sam, let's go."
"Meher wait, you don't understand," said Preet. He grabbed her hand to stop her. "I love..."
"Bas (enough) Preet!" Meher cried as she pulled her hand back. "You have to let me go."

Hello Fatima jiHello Etika 🤗
Thank you so much for writing another FF on Meet..
Just read the epilogue of Ishq Bulava.. Must say Quiet Interesting concept..This is my 3rd FF on Meet...and each time I try my best to be different 😛 I want this one to be more grown up and intense...let's see what happens 😆
The way you show Lalit is very different from show .. I think you like lalit as a arrogant kind of person who always boost how successful businessman he is..
No Gyatri Why??? Do you do that...
Well Lalit was very stubborn in the show. He was adamant about fulfilling his promise to Balraj, even if that meant marrying Prem off to Ash if Heer was dead. He never bothered to see what Prem wanted...his word to his friend was above everything. And when Prem went agains him, he threw him out and berated anyone who took Prem's side. Also, he had a very strained relationship with Preet, before the leap anyway. I used that angle in my story too.Gaytri is missing in action...but I think that adds another touch to the emotions in this story.
I just love your prem and heer and how much heer is concern about preet marriage is so typical of bhabhis to do that and prem is as usual the best brother for preet..
Maya , Harman and Veera I just kind of not like them how much good they are in story.. But I am sure they are not going to be so negative, useless and pig headed like in show respectively...
Premeer are gems and very supportive of Preet. They have literally brought him up since Gaytri died.Herman and Veera are not bad. Maya is gray.
Gaurav no FF is your complete without him being as Preet friend but its hard for me to imagine harshad here.. So everytime his scene comes I imagine a faceless Person... LOL
Well...you have to think about Harshad as Gaurav Sherma...the one who wouldn't give Lalit a CD of a ceremony honoring his late son just because he didn't have money o buy it. 😲 Except that my Gaurav is more decent 😆Preet love him so much and what can I say about him except that stop chasing stupid girls... You are only made for Meher...<3Preet is only meant for Meher...but they have yet to meet. These girls are not important to them...more like passtimes. Hope you like how Meet finaly meet. 😛
And yes that girl and pub scene cracked me ...
Okk I should stop ranting. You might be getting bored by now.
And yes I forget to tell you my name
Its Etika...
